Stacey Jones coached side. No discipline, handling errors, missed tackles…

14th min TRY PAPUA NEW GUINEA to Rhyse Martin! That's an incredible try! The Kiwis let the ball bounce, Robert Derby regathers and sets it in motion! But the bunker says NO TRY! The Kumuls off side at the kick! The Kiwis have to switch back on. This is not going to be a cake walk.

The two teams are back for the second half. Very small crowd still in attendance now. The Kumuls kick off to get us back underway. Casey McLean puts his foot over the sideline and catches the kick off.

PENALTY NEW ZEALAND on half way.

76th min TRY NEW ZEALAND to Jamayne Isaako. Good offload Hiku to set it up and he runs 40 metres to score in the corner. It has degenerated into a training run. They're giving Johnson another kick... this one on the sideline. And it misses. Hits the upright.

New Zealand Kiwis 54
Papua New Guinea Kumuls 12

FULL TIME

The Kiwis maintain their place in the Pacific Cup.

MATCH REPORT: Teen debutant stars as Kiwis secure Pacific Cup safety

New Zealand have closed the curtain on a disappointing 2024 Pacific Cup campaign by avoiding relegation to the tournament's second-tier with a 54-12 victory over Papua New Guinea, while unearthing a future star in teenage debutant Casey McLean.

Having lost the chance to defend the title they won last season by falling to Tonga in Week 2, the Kiwis faced being replaced by the Kumuls in the Cup for 2025 if they were unable to muster a result at CommBank Stadium in the promotion-relegation clash.

And that is the last game of the 2024 rugby league season. Thanks to everyone who have followed along with our game day coverage this year. And thanks for all of your contributions. We've updated over 100 Canberra Raiders matches this year... plus big events like the Origin series, the NRL Grand Final Day and the Pacific Championships. Not to forget the Canberra Raiders Cup. Sadly it is over, but we will be back in February to do it all again.

Crowds, ratings highlight passion for international game

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga believes international rugby league has rarely been stronger as crowds, TV ratings and jersey sales confirm the Pacific Championships is the fastest growing area of the game.

“The passion is huge. The Pacific Championships had 34,000 at Brisbane, a sell-out at Christchurch, nearly a sell-out in Auckland and a sell-out in Sydney, so we don’t really need any more evidence than that.”

Meninga’s view is backed up by crowds, TV ratings and sales of the iconic Kangaroos jersey, with:

The 2024 Pacific Championships delivering record-breaking attendance and viewership, with a total audience of 6.2 million, marking a significant 40 per cent increase;

The Pacific Cup final between Australia and Tonga drawing 1m viewers – a 79 per cent increase on the 2023 decider between the Kangaroos and Kiwis;

The Kangaroos vs Kiwis Test in Christchurch attracting 545,000 viewers on FTA and nearly 1 million views across all platforms, surpassing last year’s corresponding match by 22 per cent and exceeding both Bledisloe Cup fixtures earlier this year, which attracted 477,000 and 283,000 FTA viewers respectively.
