Re: NFL Thread
Very odd move in that if you were so close to sacking the HC that a 2-3 start gets him canned (and almost certainly a 3-2 start doesnt) then why bother going into a new season with him?
Nick Sirianni is a bit in the same boat... if the eagles come out of the bye and end up 2-4 or something, i could see that going the same way
At which point, you should have just pulled the Band-Aid off in the off season
Also sacking Saleh but keeping Hackett... that has Rodgers fingerprints all over it.

Re: NFL Thread
Case of performance vs expectation. Team was widely tipped to win the division and they look a long way from that despite the record.
More likely it was Rodgers threw out a "him or me" ultimatum to the owner.

Re: NFL Thread
Still dem boys i see.
Eagles arent much better. Limped home against a very bad Browns team... Nick Sirianni on the hottest of hot seats
Can not imagine this team fixing it's issues this year and saving his job

Hey at least they beat the Browns. Imagine being the Browns. Sold the farm to get Watson who was meant to take them to the next level. All they got was regression back to same old Browns.

Re: NFL Thread
Makes it tough losing so many starters on D. No excuse for the offense stinking it up like they are.

I know Watson has been bad, but really following that game play to play really accentuated how bad he is.Northern Raider wrote: ↑October 14, 2024, 4:56 pmHey at least they beat the Browns. I think the Browns might have won the game with Winston
I follow eagles games in much the same way i do Raiders games, with existential dread that they will blow these games in horrific fashion and i'll be left mad, angry and frustrated
And to my credit both those teams do that regularly enough to justify it... this was a one score game all game long and i never got beyond 5/10 on the panic metre because i just could not talk myself into Watson sustaining drives enough to beat them and the Eagles werent good today, but Watson was DREADFUL. I dont know how Stefanski can keep playing him, if the management and owner are forcing that call, he needs to come out and say so to protect his own reputation. They're going to sack him all the same, might as well go out on his sheild.
Re Eagles:
the offence looks largely the same as last year with a few minor wrinkles, Jordan Mailata and Dallas went down with what looks like a serious injuries, Nick Sirianni is jawing with players and fans alike and showing up to press conferences saying he overuled play callers both on offence and alarmingly, defence, in key spots, and calls that did not work and it's real "Nick, what would you say you do here?" sort of deal
I think there is some bright spots. Jalen Carter really has some moments where you watch him and think he could be the best defensive player in the league.
Both rookie DB's look like fantastic picks.
AJ Brown, Smithy are stunningly good and Hurts finally kept a clean sheet with turnovers and after a slow start (0-5 passing) finished with 16/20 for 2tds and a few nice runs on the ground too.
But this is a middling team, 9-8... maybe 10-11 wins if things break right, by 7-9 isnt out of the question either if things break poorly and even if they get to 11 and win the division, they're not winning play off game let alone the SB.
I've already reached the "well at least Dallas got blown out and they're clearly not winning a SB this year either" part of the season which says it all.

Re: NFL Thread
Browns parted with 3 x 1st round picks and a bag of 3rd/4th rounders plus gave Watson $230m fully guaranteed. That's the only reason he's still playing. The earliest they can get out of his contract with a bearable cap hit is 2026.

Re: NFL Thread
Of course but then Stefanski should pointedly say thatNorthern Raider wrote: ↑October 14, 2024, 8:26 pm Browns parted with 3 x 1st round picks and a bag of 3rd/4th rounders plus gave Watson $230m fully guaranteed. Next time he's asked if they're considering a change at QB, he should say "No, DeShaun Watson has a guaranteed contract through the next few years. Ownership and management have made the decision to continue to try and build this around DeShaun and me and the staff will continue to do our best to do that"
It'll piss off the owner and GM but who gives a ****. As i said, they'll sack at the end of this year regardless of whether he's liked or not.
Stefanski is a good coach, at this point he needs to put his name on the right side of history so he can place himself in position to get his next HC opportunity

Lions chasing Crosby to replace Hutchinson. That would be huge
Re: NFL Thread
Eagles sleepwalk to a win over the Giants
Not very convincing or impressive, but Saquon and AJ are going to win you a lot of games against bad teams. Offensively there is not a lot else going on here. And Hurts is holding on to the ball and running into too many sacks. At least it was another clean game turn over wise. Nick Sirianni won't survive the season if this continues on offence.
Tyler Steen and Fred Johnson played OK for back ups, really is a a credit to Jeff Stoutland and Howie Roseman that the eagles prioritise that position and in a league where most teams dont have competent starts, the Eagles consistently get play from back ups that at least allows the offence to operate.
A few positives defensively though
I think Mitchell is going to be a star at CB. He might be a top 10-15 CB right now and he'll only get better. The way the eagles are using DeJean is really interesting and gives them a swiss army knife weapon. He's good in coverage and has a real knack for getting home on the blitz
The DL finally got going a bit, albeit against a disastrous Giants OL but the Georgia Dawgs ate today... Carter had 2 sacks, Nakobe had 2 sacks and a bunch of tackles, Nolan Smith got home for a sack
FA bust Bryce Huff is starting to turn the corner, half sack last week, got home for a sack today and had a couple of other really good rushes which go pressure and forced the QB up (which resulted in one of the Carter sacks)
This eagles team isnt great but this giants team is complete ass.

Wilson back as starter for Steelers and their offense is spluttering. Crowd calling for Fields at start of 2nd qtr.

Re: NFL Thread
I don't think Fields is good to be clear, i think he's a bottom 5-10 NFL QBNorthern Raider wrote: ↑October 21, 2024, 11:05 am Wilson back as starter for Steelers and their offense is spluttering. Crowd calling for Fields at start of 2nd qtr.
But I don't get the move to Wilson, they're both similar qbs in that neither will attack the middle of the field, both are going to hold on the ball and take sacks and go big game hunting on the outside of hashes in the pass game.
Where the difference is for me is that Fields can create plays with his legs, Wilson cant. And Field still could conceivably improve (probably not much if it all, but it's possible) where as Russ is clearly at the end of his career and his trajectory can only go down
Strange decision imo. But i suppose trading out the 26th best QB in the league for the 33rd... it's probably not a huge deal either way

Russ delivered in the end while Rodgers still underwhelms at Jets. Davante Adams reunion not as productive as they were hoping. Early days there so room to improve.

Yeah i guess the doubters like me have to stfu for at least a week. Game 1 looked pretty good and a decent upgrade on Fields. Re: the jets, they'll get better because they wont be playing the PIT defence every week and Rodgers and Adams will im sure get on the same page... that's not really going to help the fact their defence isnt special anymore. So i think this is ultimately going to be a fruitless jets season

Very strong eagles win over a bengals team I think is much better than their record indicates
Maybe this team does have a shot to make a little more noise than I thought
And by that I mean they could win a play off game rather than 1 and done
Not willing to commit to that yet, few big games to come but an encouraging performance for sure

Re: NFL Thread
Going to be a little bit of a homer for a second, just re-watching the Eagles game on Gamepass and i really like what the two young DB's are giving the Eagles
Quinyon Mitchell is, imo, already a top 10-15ish CB. He's already really good and should only get better. Impressively he learns from his mistakes so quickly.
Cooper DeJean is exactly what you thought you were getting, slot guy who is really comfortable playing in space but is also physical enough to come on blitzs and step into the box and fit the run.
Eagles might have hit those two picks out of the park. Jordan Davis pick however... hmmm starting to worry

Re: NFL Thread
I think Cowboys have back to back Rd1 duds. Mazi Smith is a fraud, the old "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane", springs to mind.
Guyton is outta his depth. I can't decide if he's just not ready, or if hes no good. Clearly strong enough. Will have a few good plays, then a disaster.
There are bright spots on this team, but so so many holes.

Agreed it's too early to write of Guyton, he looked really good in pre season but his in season performance is more in line with what i expected, he's a bit of a project and is going to take time. Mims for the Bengals is a bit the sameNorthern Raider wrote: ↑October 29, 2024, 4:54 pmOL is increasingly becoming a position that requires time to develop. Good traits but they'll need time, problem is the Cowboys have a good recent history of bringing in rookie OLmen and them being pretty much lights out from day 1 and they really actually need Guyton to be good straight away... but it's just not happening this time around
Mazi Smith however is, i think a bust. Im not thrilled with Jordan Davis because he's not contributing much as a pass rusher but he's still a really good run stuffer... and 2 down run stuffers are useful players but not for the #13 overall pick, so im going to need him to sort it the **** out... but Mazi Smith gets moved in the run game. He's really struggled. DT's are also pretty famous for being slow burns, most of the elite DT's take 2-3 seasons to find their feet.
Suh, McCoy, Donald and my guy Jalen Carter dont come around often.

Time to pack the season in.
Defense has been out too long.
OL doesn't like short yardage. Would prefer to get a penalty for long.
CD has a shoulder issue.
Daks pulled a hammy. His hand is swollen too.
Argh

Apparently the Prescott injury is more severe than first thought
Likely to be a few weeks and sounds like he’s no chance for the eagles game
Given the ewlfes next four weeks for the eagles is @Cowboys, VsCommies, @Rams and @Ravens
Losing to cooper rush isn’t it if the eagles want to be a play off team
2-2 over those weeks would be fine, and you hope the two are the division games.
Lamar doesn’t lose to nfc teams, they’re too hard to prepare for nfc teams who only see them every 4 years so that’s almost certainly a loss
3-1 would set the eagles up for a potential run at the 2 seed

I don’t really subscribe to the notion that sport games are rigged.
But two flags should have been thrown on CIN’s 2pt attempt tonight. And I think if that’s Mahomes, they get thrown. Shocking stuff by the zebras.
