Just checked out the website. He is 7 hours in and has a long, long way to go. What an event.
Jim Walmsley out in front. He features in the Rise of the Ultra Runners book. Notorious for attacking the course, leading and then blowing up. Won it last year though.

I think I'll sit down and contemplate Coastal's life choices for him, I'm not confident he's making his own after this

Website doesn't seem to be updating??? Or maybe he's found an exhausted and sympathetic ear at the 51km mark. He's telling a Spanish runner all about Ricky's attacking structures.Dr Zaius wrote:Just checked out the website. He is 7 hours in and has a long, long way to go. What an event.

3 hours to do a 10k section. Looks like another brutal uphill stretch in the dark of the early morning. Sun coming up now so hopefully he gets a chance to stretch out on a nice downhill. So long as his legs have anything left.

I just went out for a 20 to support him. But checking back in he is still pushing on. 21 hours and around the 100k. He's probably got about 3 more hours of daylight, dusk running/hiking and then a long night. I think the worst climbs are on the first half of the course but after that long on the course any climb is tough.bonehead wrote:how's our lad tracking Gerg?gerg wrote:3 hours to do a 10k section. Man what a beast.
The first checkpoint he's coming 2335th position and I'm sure inspired by Ricky himself, Coastal is showing some grit your teeth toughness, bleeding green and getting into the grind. He has been consistently climbing the standings, gaining in 13 out of 18 segments. He is up to 1460th position now at the last huge climb. Bring it home buddy. A nice stretch of about 10k of downhill now. Nine more segments to tick off.

In support of Coastal, I did a 7 stop Bar Hop through Sydney on crutches. I hope that brings him inspiration. It has bought me sore hands and a sore head.

He is now at the 146k point, 33 hours. He has 3 (comparatively) smallish climbs left. It's just before 4am. This last sunrise should be awesome as long as he's not hallucinating too much.

They cut away from the finish line a minute or two before he finished.
He must have finished nearly 30 minutes ago. I can't believe he hasn't drafted up his race report for us. Pretty slack effort.

Back on the bike yesterday after a bit of a lay-off due to lack of time (Boneyjr bought himself another car that needs some setup) so just a quick sprint up the hill and back was a nice 58min 19km 200m climb loop top 3'da heap of segments

Re: Health and fitness
Thanks for sharing coastal, was a good listen. Roughly what does the week in chamonix cost? I'm tempted by this race but probably more tempted by the location. I think I'd prefer to fastpack it over 5 or 6 days. Some of the tour groups I looked at were 3500 euro and that's a little too much for my tastes.
In the podcast you hinted at not quite being done with the longer distances, so which races are you plotting in the back of your head? Western States?

Re: Health and fitness
I’d say race week would comfortably be the most expensive week of the year in Chamonix, a huge percentage of their annual revenue is generated by that race now. Slightly off peak I don’t think it would be ridiculous, I got a decent rate at a good hotel for around 2,500-3,000 Aud for race week so I could concretely say off peak you could do somewhere small or cheap for near half that. It can be tricky finding reasonable places to eat - everything is fantastic but $30+ eu bowls of pasta for example are pretty common - we found some really nice baguette places for very cheap so not every meal was a blowout. Dont know what the refuges on the loop charge though, that where it may get expensive as you only have so many options.gerg wrote: ↑September 16, 2024, 9:36 pm Thanks for sharing coastal, was a good listen. As for what’s next; I think I need a bit of a break from super heavy training so will take a while to make a call on the next monster challenge. States is a maybe but a long term play, really hard to get into. I also think I’m better at the hard slog stuff than outright pace so things like hardrock may be up my alley. And I got a familiar shiver down the spine watching Tor de Geants last week, and I fell in love with Italy after Chamonix….
Re: Health and fitness
I walked today for the first time in 12 weeks. It's more of a hobble really. Fairly limited how much I'm allowed to do and still largely dependant on crutches. A mate did the Surf Coast Century today. Watched his progress. Seems a world away.

We're all set to fly to Jeju Island an Wednesday night, overnighter. Race is Saturday morning. I haven't been able to sleep on planes even for long haul flights overnight for a long time. I also really hate sleeping pills so don't really want to do that. 2330 departure 0630 seoul transit then 1030 arrival at Jeju.
Any tips? I'm setting myself up to be tired for raceday whatever I do.
My training has been all over the place. First month was okay at 213k, but then crook for about 5 or 6 weeks. I racked up 67k and 165k in July and August. September was good and I think it was close to the biggest month I've ever done at 336k. From late August I had good weeks - 73, 82, 89, 92, and then taper 50, 44. So I had a decent block in there. I went a bit further than normal because of there being no elevation here to train on.
Weather looks perfect at Jeju. According to the app it's 18 to 22 degrees every day there for the week. Not too much wind. Perfect running conditions. Really excited to go through an ordeal like this with my wife though I'm not sure I'll be able to keep up (PI). She takes this **** a bit too seriously for my liking. She did the whole training program. It'll really hurt to keep up with her

As for sleep I’ve never slept well on a plane in my life, I’m well over 6 foot so it’s always been a challenge. I just try my best to be calm about it… have a good neck pillow, eye mask and headphones - even if you can’t sleep put on some music or a pod and wind down as much as possible. I also read an interesting article somewhere recently about how the airline’s timing of cabin lights and meals is designed to assist in adapting the body to the destination, so just go with the flow as much as possible. Sounds like landing times is actually great to get boots on the ground for the day and stay up until a decent hour for a solid first nights sleep, I find that’s key.
Keep us up to date, really keen to see how you both go!
