Re: 2024 NRL Fans' Choice Player of the Year
Joe Tapine takes out the 2024 Canberra Raiders Fans' Choice Player of the Year
Joe Tapine is the 2024 Canberra Raiders Fans' Choice Player of the Year. It is the second time the prop has taken out the award, also winning previously in 2022. Half and fullback Kaeo Weekes and second rower Hudson Young rounded out the top three. Tapine has also been named the Best Forward of the Year, while Weekes takes the title as Best Back.
Tapine, described last week by Raiders coach Ricky Stuart as "the best prop in the world", was the player of the match in five games and polled votes in 10 matches.
In 2024, Tapine ranked second among NRL props for running metres gained (142 per game), behind the Warriors' Addin Fonua-Blake. Over 40 per cent of his run metres were post contact metres. He ranked sixth among props for tackle breaks (55) and third for offloads (29). He produced four try assists and eight line break assists, more than any prop. He made 29 tackles per game, among the top 10 props. With Josh Papalii, he's been a tower of strength for the team in the middle of the park.
With Elliott Whitehead missing his last match with the Raiders, due to suspension, Tapine took the captaincy in the Round 27 clash with the Dragons. He's been the captain in waiting for some time - and would richly deserve the honour of being named the club's on field leader for 2025.
Kaeo Weekes finished second on the leaderboard - and has the title of Best Back as a result. He was named player of the match three times, and received points in eight matches. The speedy 22 year old was recruited from the Sea Eagles late last year. He had only 12 NRL games to his name when he arrived at the club, but made 17 first grade appearances in 2024. Known best as a fullback, he spent the off season training at five eighth. Ethan Strange won the battle for the No. 6 jersey in Round 1, but with Jamal Fogarty suffering a long term injury, he stepped up. He played eight games at halfback, and did very well. When Fogarty returned, he was switched to fullback - and probably was even better in that role.
Weekes scored eight tries, ranking third at the Raiders, behind Xavier Savage (15) and Hudson Young (10). He was equal second for try involvements (18, with Savage) - with only Jamal Fogarty in front of him (23). He's evasive and made plenty of tackle breaks (55). He averaged over 100 running metres per game. He was an able back up kicker, averaging 181 kicking metres per game. It was some debut season in green.
The Canberra Raiders Fans' Choice Player of the Year has been awarded since 2004, with the inaugural winner being Ruben Wiki. Josh Papalii holds the record for most trophies - four. Other winners have included Alan Tongue, Terry Campese, Shaun Fensom, Jarrod Croker, Josh Hodgson, Jordan Rapana and Elliott Whitehead. The award, sponsored by The Greenhouse Canberra Raiders supporters site, is voted on by Raiders fans on line, who give 3-2-1 points to the best players each week. The Player of the Year receives a crystal trophy from The Greenhouse.
