Kaeo's future

Post by Bluesbrother »

Ricky keeps speaking about Kaeo as though he is a long term proposition for us. With Strange at 6, Sanders at 7 and Stewart at 1. Where does that leave Kaeo? I'm starting to think he'll be tried as a 9 very soon. I wouldn't be opposed to it. Thoughts?

There is not a name you can throw out that i would push back against for a trial at 9.

Kaeo? Sure, give it a shot
Puru? he's getting some run in Cup and im here for it
Timoko? Not sure his shoulder is up for the defensive workload but why not
Horsburgh? Why the **** not, he can't possibly be worse than Danny Levi

I think Stuart's commentary is more than likley with the understanding that for the next 12-18 months he'll be a player he's relying on as a half/fullback back up and wants to make the player knows he's got the coaches confidence.

There's no guarantee Sanders or Stewart will excel in first grade. The likes of Kaeo and even Cook are needed as a bridge. If they turn out to be better than just a bridge, it's a good problem to have

Not sure about him at 9

Kaeo is probably our best fullback, still not sold on Chevy. We need to re-sign Weekes now! Perfect player to have in the squad.

Depends what his service is like from dummy half , left to right passing. I know it couldn't be any worse than Levi's.
Didnt he already play some games there for Manly?

Not sure what the plan is for Chevy , is it another year of blooding into first grade. If it is then Weekes will be needed for fullback , I'm liking what he is doing so far and will build on his game.

Agree good squad player (at a minimum). Will be interesting to see how Ponga goes off the bench for Qld. That's exactly something Weekes could do

Yes, but I think weekes is a bit more than that for us, currently he’s a point of difference, will be exciting to see him running off Fogarty next week. #ReSignWeekes

I'd guess Fullback for the rest of the year, then Mr Fix It, maybe starting on the wing next year until there's a few injuries. If there was a big turn around this year and they made a run for the 8, maybe he holds the fullback spot to start next year.

He would be a great 14, but I can't see Ricky ever getting past the two hooker thing. Can't see him getting a run at 9 unless Ricky's views about the position change as well or without a full preseason there.

I like him at fullback.
Can’t really see him defending in the middle as a 9.
I’m also not a huge fan of manufactured 9s either eg Josh McCrone.
Generally doesn’t work.
I have him ahead of Chevy as our best fullback. Maybe in the future that won’t be the case but only time will tell.

Shades of Hingano, Stick seems to be a competent man manager, great culture builder but an absolutely hopeless tactician with zero vision for todays game, Weekes would be a great 14-17 and back up 1, 6 or 7 but no 9, until Stick realises that without a marquis 9 we are in for more of the same dross over the next few seasons

If we ended up with Strange in the centres and Kaeo at #6 for a year or two, I could live with that.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

That's a good option.

I like the idea of him at 14. He could play a stint at 9, best thing to happen is he develops into a Damien Cook sort of 9.
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Can get on board with Puru and Kaeo but I hope you are having a lend with Timoko ??

He is a world class centre who’s career is being hampered by a coaching staff that either don’t realise how good he is or don’t know how to put a game plan together to let him shine. It’s both frustrating and infuriating at the same time.

If any of the tracksuit wearers at Braddon read this please go and watch the tape of first half v Dragons last year and take some notes.

Cheers ✌️

Whatever the club’s plan is for Kaeo- I hope it’s being communicated to him and he’s been given a plan for his personal development into a consistent first grade player (or better). That probably comes with committing to a preferred position for him and nurturing his skills in it.

His best present position is fullback, shouldn’t be playing halves. He might actually be best suited on the wing. In a team that doesn’t expect them to be prop forwards.

You’ve been here for 10 years and you don’t know what a dubby is? You don’t need to be a member of the cool kids clique, you just need to be able to detect sarcasm, such as GE suggesting Guler play hooker and realise he’s not serious

Shifting Strange to centre just so we can get Weekes into the 17 at 6 is a terrible idea imo. You will never see the Dolphins shifting the Hammer to centre just to get Trai Fuller in the team whilst Bennett is their coach... a good coach would never do this. Titans tried this with Brimson and he has confirmed recently that Hasler told him he won't be wasting his talent in the centres ever again.

Weekes covers 1 and 6. He will get plenty of opportunities with injury and suspension. He will likely continue on as our fullback whilst Stewart is developing. If he has the ability to play 9 then he could be considered on the bench but otherwise he's an excellent back up to have in the squad.

I don't see why he couldn't be a pretty effective centre. Hamiso has shown a good blueprint for a smaller body with good speed to excel in the centres. Croker made a career at centre out of being a great kick chaser.

KW doesn't strike me as a winger but if he's not going to be our fullback in the future then I think he could be a good centre who can burn his opposite with speed and set up the guy outside of him, as well as focusing on chasing every kick like his life depends on it. If Kris doesn't pull his finger out and show some form then maybe that's Kaeo's path to first grade.

I swear I see a serious new suggestion every week about why x, y or z should just be a hooker instead - completely overlooking that hooker is a specialist spine position etc etc

He would need to learn how to defend at centre and probably needs to bulk up a little to play there, but I definitely prefer this idea over shifting Strange to the centres.
