Hunter Sports take on Erindale College in huge Peter Mulholland Cup showdown

Erindale College and Hunter Sports are looking for three wins in as many weeks as they round out their Peter Mulholland Cup pool matches on Wednesday. The two sides have been the standouts in Pool C and Erindale coach Ashley Barnes, for one, can’t wait for what is shaping as one of the matches of the season.

“We’re excited to play against a really good side,” he said. “The two of us are set to make finals, so I think it’ll be a high quality match. “I was really pleased with the scrap and the fight they showed against Hills. We just now probably need to go back and readjust a couple of things.

Still very foggy at Seiffert Oval. Hunter kick off, we are underway.

Jonah Anderson a late inclusion at halfback for Erindale, pushes Troy Codey to the bench.

48th min FORCED LINE DROP OUT conceded by Erindale. That was dangerous, thrown about desperately on the last and then kicked to the corner.

But Hunter make an early error and there’s a penalty to Erindale for a high shot on Tyler Buchanan. He has to leave the field, walks off, presumably for an HIA.

MATCH REPORT: Erindale College dominate in clash with Hunter Sports

What promised to be one of the most competitive fixtures of the Peter Mulholland Cup turned into the opposite after an Erindale College masterclass. Both they and Hunter Sports High came into their clash at Seiffert Oval with perfect 2-0 records, but it was the home side that kept their flawless season intact on the back of a 34-6 victory.

Hunter Sports had their chances to strike first and get on the board in the second half, but Erindale put the result beyond doubt in the 41st minute with another Anderson gem, kicking behind the line and an unfavourable bounce for the defence turned into a perfect one for a chasing Geordan Amaiu. The lead was extended beyond 30 the very next set with Jacob Mau-Pohiva carrying multiple defenders over the line in an incredible show of strength.

He's developing his game well. Both he and Cowling were good. I guess he'll be SG Ball next year, and that'll be another good test.

Holy Cross Ryde and Patrician Brothers Blacktown and Fairfield were strong league schools even when I was at school many years ago. I remember watching Matthew Johns play Holy Cross in a semi final. Andrew was too young then.

Yeah, Patrician Brothers Blacktown would probably be the slight favourites. They are stacked with top rated juniors and dominated their group (as did Erindale).

Seems like maybe the changed the format this year and the losers of the qualifying finals will get a second chance.

The livestream for Erindale vs Patrician Brothers Blacktown is on Kommunity TV from 12:40pm Wednesday.

Erindale College face Patrician Brothers Blacktown in Peter Mulholland Cup quarterfinals

Erindale College have put themselves in the best possible position to take out the 2024 Peter Mulholland Cup. After finishing top of their pool undefeated, the Canberra-based college has earned a double shot at the title. That means defeat on Wednesday won’t spell the end of their campaign - not that coach Ashley Barnes is thinking down those lines.

“We’re not going in there thinking about losing and playing the week after,” Barnes said. “We’re preparing to play our best football, play to our potential and put in a really good performance.”
