NRL mulls shock plan to buy Super League after record $700m year
NRL powerbrokers are reportedly considering a bold move to buy the English Super League in what is shaping to be a historic investment. That is according to The Daily Telegraph who are reporting the NRL have begun investigating the ‘financial viability’ of taking over the rival competition.
Should the NRL be successful in its takeover, players could potentially move between competitions and countries within a single season.

Re: Rugby League 2024
Vlad looking for another sports betting revenue stream no doubt.
Agree there could be some interesting opportunities though, especially if they go back to winter.

Re: Rugby League 2024
I’m not sure why the NRL would want to do it. Is it really a big money maker?
Re: Rugby League 2024
Not when it would be in direct competition with the EPL if they moved it to winter

Are there other benefits?
I can't see Super League been a cash cow but there might be something there for the game
They should also look at doing more for local clubs and juniors.

Re: Rugby League 2024
Seems a strange investment to make... have to think they've got plans to make it more viable commerically if they go through with it

Player pool, if they run polar seasons then clubs will align and send each other playersLimeGreenMachine wrote:Are there other benefits?

Re: Rugby League 2024
Year round content would be a big one. I am sure most of us would've watched if Chevy or Strange were plying their trade there over the summer. Its not a big money spinner but it breaks even already and you'd think operational costs would go down so its probably not a huge risk if well managed.
I guarantee if there was any truth to it then it's a long term play about gaming revenue. It's a 100 billion global industry growing at 10% a year with the NRL's own recent revenue growth mostly coming from gaming deals.

Re: Rugby League 2024
OK, the gaming revenue makes sense. The broadcast revenue is probably way under what it could be too.

Re: Rugby League 2024
Issue is with seasons running back to back is that the players are crying about how many games they play now.
How can they then go spend time in the opposite hemisphere playing more

Could probably just buy Rugby Australia now for 50 cents and achieve a lot of the same goals.

I don’t think they could force players to go, it would just be ones that want more cash or opportunity. Probably wouldn’t play full seasons either.LimeGreenMachine wrote: ↑February 23, 2024, 10:33 pm Issue is with seasons running back to back is that the players are crying about how many games they play now.

Players like Mal, Kenny and Sterlo did it back in the day.

Re: Rugby League 2024
Yeah and clubs aren’t going to want to send their top tier players over and risk getting hurt.
It’s an interesting idea. I could see clubs aligning with NRL clubs and turning it into another feeder comp. Haven’t figured out if that’s a good idea or not.

Re: Rugby League 2024
Yeah, would probably prefer a draft both ways than a sister club set up, because you know it's going to end up being Roosters with Wigan and St Helens with Brisbane etc.

Re: Rugby League 2024
It's not about forcing them . There is a CBA which enforces players to have a minimum break from playing the game. 6 or 8 weeks , can't remember.NoMan wrote: ↑February 24, 2024, 4:14 amI don’t think they could force players to go, it would just be ones that want more cash or opportunity. They need to protect players from themselves , there will be those that chase more money and it won't be just the minimum wage players.
Would clubs allow the players to return to training after Xmas , they do now for the international players but I can't imagine clubs been a fan more players did it.
Re: Rugby League 2024
I get what you're saying. You'd probably need a mid season draft and shrink the Superleague season to more like 20 rounds. That would allow players to go over to start in November and be back a month before kick off. I think the winter comps there used to run September to April but that was 30+ rounds.
Not sure there's much beyond Matty Johns day dreaming to the proposal though.

Yeah you are more than likely right. I was just curious how they could make it work around the CBA.

The Sunday Telegraph is reporting the Warriors and Panthers are pencilled in for Vegas in 2025.
Warriors Vegas call
New Zealand Warriors are tipped to be one of the four NRL clubs playing here in Las Vegas next year, alongside Penrith and two others. Having New Zealand fans to add to the Aussies and UK supporters in Sin City would enhance the spectacle and no doubt sell more seats. Owner Mark Robinson says a final decision will be left to coach Andrew Webster.

Noah Martin was playing Round 1 Flegg too. I’m assuming he’d served the ban in a Flegg trial, maybe?
UPDATE… I now see a sensible explanation in another thread. JWH already served his ban last week.
I’m still not sure when Noah served his. Can only have been in the Flegg trial.

Re: Rugby League 2024
I think that's a stretch. Roosters played last weekend in Round 1. They've just exploited them playing a weekend before they would normally have played.greeneyed wrote:Noah Martin was playing Round 1 Flegg too. I’m assuming he’d served the ban in a Flegg trial, maybe?

You’ve got to keep a close eye on the Roosters.
I get this feeling they’re up to no good.

What’s our opinions on the NRLs non sanction/punishment on foul mouthed Trell ?
It seems to me he’s bigger than the game.

I knew it would absurd, and sure enough that’s how it’s playing out.yeh raiders wrote: ↑February 15, 2024, 12:14 pmWhy the **** are they making it less risky to do short drop outs.Shiv wrote: ↑February 14, 2024, 9:15 pm 2024 NRL Rule change and interpretations clarification: https://www.nrl.com/news/2024/02/14/202 ... ification/
Worth a watch - its circa 35mins
Only rule change is around short dropouts. No longer a penalty if it doesn't go the 10. Instead its a play the ball 10meters in from the sideline.
intended to make it less risky to do short drop outs.
If anything, they should be harsher on short drop outs and making the drop-out a minimum of 20 metres.
You force a repeat set from playing good footy. There's no way the opposition should get a 50/50 dice roll to redeem themselves. Utterly ridiculous.
