Former Magpie makes new nest in Tumut Blues

Stemming the tide of players leaving the Tumut Blues ahead of season 2024 is hard-working Canberra Raiders Cup forward Kyle Danilczak.The former Yass Magpie joins the Blues after leaving his junior club to find a new opportunity in the strong Group 9 competition.

The versatile forward should be a good pick-up for the Group 9 premiers, with Danilczak a former Canberra Raiders junior with a big motor.

Congratulations to the Monaro Colts, beating the Northern Rivers Titans, 12-8, in the semi final of the Men's Open Country Championships. They progress to the Grand Final against either the Northern Tigers or Newcastle Rebels. Todd Carney was playing five eighth for the Northern Rivers.

Northern Rivers took a 4-0 lead to the half time break, but a try early in the second half to Gideon Afemui gave the Colts a two point lead at the 50 minute mark. The Titans took back the lead with a try to their winger, off a Todd Carney cross field kick. However, the easy conversion attempt was missed. Monaro took back the lead after Jesse Dent crashed through for a try with four minutes remaining. Sam Williams converted, and that proved to be enough for the Colts.

Country Championships final: Former NRL star Sam Williams to lead charge for Monaro Colts

Before this season, Sam Williams hadn’t pulled on a Monaro jumper for close to 20 years, going way back to when a skinny teenager from Cooma with a bucket load of potential lined up for the Colts’ junior rep sides. But this Sunday – with a decade-long, 143-game professional career sandwiched in between – the now 33-year-old will line up in the white and red again as Monaro prepares to take on Newcastle in the final of the NSW rugby league country championships at Cessnock Sportsground.

“It’s brilliant, I can’t wait,” said Williams. “I haven’t had the chance to wear the Monaro jersey since I was about 14 or so. It’s been a long time between drinks.

Sam Williams says Monaro Colts excited by the challenge in Country Championships Grand Final

Monaro's Men's Country Championships side are excited for the opportunity and won't shy away from the challenge that this Sunday's Grand Final matchup possesses. They face the reigning champions of the competition, the Newcastle Rebels, who are coming off a 52-0 semi-final win against the Northern Tigers last week. Captain and co-coach of Monaro and former Canberra Raider Sam Williams says the team is excited for the opportunity.

"I know for some of the boys in our side, to play against the quality that Newcastle have, it’s a really good opportunity for them," said Williams. "It’s not going to be easy, there’s no doubt that they’re the pinnacle at the moment, but we go out there and give ourselves every opportunity by being there".

MATCH REPORT: Anderson stars as Rebels run riot again





Newcastle Rebels fullback Cameron Anderson put his stamp once again on the Men’s Country Championships Grand Final helping his side to a 20-4 victory over the Monaro Colts at Cessnock Sportsground today. Anderson scored the last of the Rebels four tries – the only points of the second half – after also scoring a try in Newcastle’s triumph last year over the Riverina Bulls.

For his efforts this year Anderson earned the Player of the Match as his teammates celebrated back-to-back Country Championships titles for 2023-2024.

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 1 Preview



The Canberra Raiders Cup returns. There are four big games this Saturday in the opening round, headlined by the clash between two of the 2023 finalists, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Belconnen Sharks.

Belconnen Sharks v Queanbeyan Kangaroos

This contest is a re-match of the 2023 Preliminary Final, decisively won by the Kangaroos at Kippax.

Last season was a triumph for halfback Sam Williams, delivering a premiership in his first full year as captain-coach of the Kangaroos ... and awarded the 2023 McIntyre Medal. Best player in the league. The Queanbeyan outfit was the No. 1 team in both attack and defence, by a large margin. The Roos lost just twice - to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers. But the men in maroon and white had the last laugh, defeating the Bushrangers, 34-6, in the Grand Final.

Williams will again be at the helm of the Roos in 2024, but the Queanbeyan side has lost a number of players. Outside backs Harry Quinlan and Steven Numambo have headed to the Queensland Cup, while Sia Soliola has moved to Newcastle for family reasons. Forwards Jayden Thomas and Steve Dunn and centre Josh Davis are also players from the Kangaroos' Grand Final team who are on the list of losses.

However, veteran forwards Josh Ayers and Troy Whiley will return to the club in 2024. Ayers and Whiley have recently been playing with the Young Cherrypickers. In addition, fullback Damien Hayden will be back from injury. He joined the Roos last year from the Bushrangers, but played only one game before being ruled out for the season.

"We've obviously lost a couple of blokes," Williams said.

"It's awesome to see people like Harry Quinlan debut for the Townsville Blackhawks on the weekend. Steve Numambo is at the Redcliffe Dolphins as well. So we lost our two centres, but they're going in the right direction and that's what it's all about. As much as winning competitions, we want to give people an opportunity."

"We've lost a couple of our senior forwards, but I think we're in a good place. Last year, it was the local boys who were the heart and soul of it, so it wasn't about changing too much. It was just trying to fill a couple of spots and get on with the job."

Former Raider, Zac Patch will again be the captain coach of the Sharks in 2024. However, Jake Hawkins - who has assisted in coaching at the Sharks - has decided to head to the south coast. He has taken over the first grade coaching reins at the Batemans Bay Tigers.

The Sharks made the finals last season for the first time in many a year. And the arrival of Patch and Hawkins in the middle of 2022 was the catalyst for the revival of the club's forturnes. The Belconnen outfit has retained a host of players, including Monaro representatives, five eighth Matthew Woolnough and forward Sonny Tupuola. The Sharks have also been active in recruitment, picking up players like former Raiders junior back Deakin Bright, rugby union forward Tommy Watego, Jermaine Pangai, the brother of Tevita Pangai Jnr, and Tristan Eldridge, who has been playing with the Gundagai Tigers.

"Last year was awesome, we had a really successful year," Patch said.

"We're looking to build on that again. We're really excited, we've recruited really well and we're starting to bond really well as a team. We've got Tommy Watego, Deakin Bright, Jermaine Pangai. There's a couple of good signings there, that we're excited to see play some good footy in Sharks colours."

Team news: Zac Patch and Matt Woolnough will steer the Sharks around the park from the halves in Round 1, with Tristan Eldridge at fullback. Deakin Bright joins Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai in the centres, while Tupuola and Watego form the second row partnership. Pangai will start at prop for the Sharks. The 2023 Grand Final winning spine of Ingram, Williams, Sheffield and Pagura will line up for the Roos this week, with Ayers named the second row and Whiley on the bench.

My tip: I'll go with the 2023 Premiers to start with a win.

Woden Rams v West Belconnen Warriors

The West Belconnen Warriors and Woden Rams finished the 2022 season as the top two teams in the competition. The Warriors were minor premiers and when it was all over on Grand Final day, they celebrated with a drink from the Canberra Raiders Cup. They beat the Rams in the finals on the way to the premiership title, while the Rams finished the year with three straight losses.

Both of these teams went backwards in season 2023. The Warriors ended in third place on the ladder. But they couldn't quite put things together as they had in 2022. They were knocked out of the finals in Week 1, losing to the Sharks by two points. The Rams, meanwhile, dropped out of the top four in 2023, finishing sixth.

This year, Ash Barnes returns as the head coach of the Rams, the team he coached to the 2018 premiership. It was the Rams' first title in 22 years, and their extraordinary Grand Final victory was their 13th win in a row that year. Woden will be hoping that Barnes - who has been successfully coaching in the Raiders' junior grades - can again spin some magic.

The Rams have done well in terms of retention. Four of this year's team - Jesse Martin, Brad Prior, Jeff Morgan and Gideon Afemui - represented the Monaro Colts in the recent Country Championships. Australian Gladiator Grand Finalist, Daine Spencer, is also back, with more muscles than ever. The Rams have also picked up a big signing in Goulburn Bulldogs forward Ron Leapai, along with Daniel Shaw and Brendan Jiminez from rugby union.



Woden will be happy with their preseason, taking out the annual West Wyalong Knockout in February - beating the Young Cherrypickers in the final. The Rams' home ground, Phillip Oval, is about to undergo some refurbishment, but at this stage, the first three home fixtures of the season will be played there - before Boomanulla Oval at Narrabundah becomes the club's temporary home.

The West Belconnen Warriors have been very low key in the off season, but they have some good young talent. Brandon Withers and Thomas Bethke represented Monaro in the Country Championships this year, while Warriors coach Ryan McQueen would have been in the squad but for injury.

Team news: Ryan McQueen has named Bethke as the first grade captain of the Warriors, while McQueen takes over the No.7 jersey. Brandon Withers will start at fullback. The Rams have selected new recruit Brendan Jimenez at half, with Sean Maloney at five eighth and Diane Spencer at fullback. It’s a strong forward pack, with Ron Leapai in the second row and Kosta Pozantzis at hooker.

My tip: The Rams should definitely be stronger in 2024. We'll tip them for a first up victory.

Queanbeyan Blues v Gungahlin Bulls

Both the Blues and Bulls had seasons they'd rather forget in 2023. They avoided the wooden spoon, but not by a lot.

It was the season from hell for coach Simon Woolford, really. The departure of coach Terry Campese was accompanied by a significant player drain. The Blues did not have enough players to field a reserve grade team. They had to forfeit one first grade match - against the Sharks - as they were unable to to field a full side. Woolford has now moved on, joining the Picton Magpies, while Jeremy Braun takes over as first grade coach of the Blues. Braun was a Blues junior - and he coached the Blues Under 19s coach last year. He also won a Canberra Raiders Cup premiership with Goulburn as a player and has previously coached at the Warriors.

Hooker Charlie Woolford and forward Ranapiri Baker have decide to head to the Magpies. But Braun has been active in recruiting. He's added Raiders juniors Kalani Skipps and Josh Pokoney, Bushrangers Jayden McLachlan and Blake Murray, and a couple of players from the Hunter - prop Loto Suli and lock Daetyn Tanuvasa.

The Bulls have put a troika in charge at Gungahlin Oval. Ben Flynn has been appointed first grade coach, while Tre Holten-Williams and Bobby Roberts have both been given the title of captain-coaches. The Bulls have re-signed players like Jesse Croker and Raiders junior Jayden Ford. Rugby union junior representative Ryan Grocott has also joined the club, along with former Raiders junior back Michael Cullen.

Team news: As expected, Holten-Williams and Roberts form the Round 1 halves partnership for the Bulls, while Grocott will start on the wing. The Blues have named Dylan and Jayden McLachlan in the halves, while Connor Williams takes the No. 1 jersey. Raiders juniors Josh Pokoney and Josh Billing respectively line up at centre and second row. The brother of Josh Papalii, John, lines up at prop for the Blues.

My tip: It will be interesting to see how these two teams come together. Given this one is at Seiffert, I'll go with the Blues.

Yass Magpies v Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers were the only team that could beat the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in 2023. They did it twice - winning by a point in Round 15 at Greenway, and then again in Week 1 of the finals. It was a five point victory in the major semi final at Freebody. But they were overwhelmed by the Roos on Grand Final day, losing 34-6 at Seiffert.

It remains to be seen, however, if the Bushies can be a contender again in 2024. They have lost quite a few players. Zac Saddler has headed to Sydney for an opportunity with the Roosters NSW Cup outfit, while fullback Jack Heyman, half Jayden McLachlan and centre Deakin Bright are on the list of losses. Darby Medlyn and Noah Saddler are also reportedly out with knee injuries. Jayden Thomas (Queanbeyan Kangaroos) is the only announced new signing. It presents a big challenge for coach Jason Kelly.

The Yass Magpies "won" the wooden spoon for a second year in a row in 2023. Coach Adam Kyle had worked hard to strengthen the squad last year and they showed some early promise on field. But they could not hang onto the likes of five eighth Tremayne Chatfield - who took a mid season opportunity in Queensland. Kyle has again looked far and wide for recruits for 2024. He's brought in Pacey McGregor, a centre/backrower from the Redcliffe Dolphins and Melbourne Storm systems, as well as New Zealander Desmond Toofohe. Hooker Charlie Woolford and forward Ranapiri Baker have switched from the Queanbeyan Blues.

Team news: Woolford will start at No. 7 in Round 1 for the Magpies, with Toofohe named at lock. Raiders recruit from the Hunter, Caleb Garvie has been included on the Yass bench. The Bushrangers will start a Raiders recruit from Goondiwindi, Trae Bennetto, at half, alongside Wez Alexander-McCarthy. The experienced Liam Oakley will lead the team from dummy half, while Jack Davison will be at the back.

My tip: There is a fair degree of uncertainty about these two outfits, given the changes in personnel. I might go with the "upset", and tip the Magpies at home at Walker Park.

Converts and rising stars: The Canberra Raiders Cup's players to watch

Union convert Brendan Jimenez will be pulling the strings for the Woden Valley Rams in the Canberra Raiders Cup in 2024 - and it's not just his speed and footwork you should be watching. He is being thrust into Woden's No.7 jersey for their season opener against the West Belconnen Warriors at Phillip Oval on Saturday.

"This year we've got a new coach, new players so it's going to be a totally different year for us and I think we'll improve a lot," Rams five-eighth Sean Maloney said.

Wet weather chaos: Canberra Raiders Cup Round 1 postponed due heavy rains



The opening rounds of Canberra's top sporting competitions are falling like dominoes with officials postponing games in the midst of a severe weather warning. The Round 1 Canberra Raiders Cup and Katrina Fanning Shield rugby league games have all been postponed.

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 2 Preview



It is the opening weekend of the 2024 Canberra Raiders Cup... Take 2. Round 1 was washed out, after the heavens opened on Friday and Saturday. So Round 2, Derby Round, will be the first on field action we shall see. The feature match will be the Queanbeyan derby, with the Blues hosting the 2023 premiers, the Kangaroos at Seiffert Oval. The washed out Round 1 has been rescheduled for July 27.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Woden Rams

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers were the only team that could beat the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in 2023. They did it twice. But when it came to Grand Final day, they were overwhelmed by the Roos, losing 34-6 at Seiffert. It remains to be seen if they can again be a contender in 2024. They have lost Zac Saddler, Jack Heyman, Jayden McLachlan and Deakin Bright. Darby Medlyn and Noah Saddler are out long term due to injury. They have picked up prop Jayden Thomas from the Roos, and they have some talent in the spine.



The Woden Rams should be stronger in 2024. They missed the finals last year - with the Bushrangers putting the final nail in the coffin in the last round of the regular season. They beat the Rams, 40-38, at Phillip, consigning them to a sixth placed finish on the ladder. This year, Ash Barnes returns as the Woden head coach after spending five years successfully working in the Raiders' junior system. Barnes was the architect of the Rams' 2018 premiership. The Rams have done well in terms of retention, while they have secured a big name signing in second rower Ron Leapai.

Team news: The Bushrangers have named a new Raiders recruit from Goondiwindi, Trae Bennetto at half. Wez Alexander-McCarthy will line up at five eighth and Jack Davison at fullback. Former Raiders juniors Brigham Moeakiola and Temple Rupapera form the centre partnership. Liam Oakley will help steer the Bushies from dummy half. The Rams have named rugby union player Brendan Jimenez at halfback, with Sean Maloney at five eighth. Australian Gladiator Daine Spencer will line up at fullback, while Ron Leapai takes the No. 11 jersey.

My tip: The Rams to win the battle of south Canberra.

Gungahlin Bulls v Belconnen Sharks

The Bulls had a season they'd prefer to forget in 2023. They have appointed Ben Flynn as first grade coach for 2024, and he'll share power with two captain-coaches - halves Tre Holten-Williams and Bobby Roberts. They have recruited rugby union junior representative Ryan Grocott - who will turn out on the wing. But this could be another tough season for Gungahlin.



It looks like the Sharks have continued to build in the off season. They made the finals last season for the first time in many a year - with the arrival of captain-coach Zac Patch a key reason for the revival of the club's fortunes. The Belconnen outfit has lost Jake Hawkins, who was also assistant coach last year. He's taking over the coaching reins at the Batemans Bay Tigers. But the Sharks have retained most of their talent - and added centre Deakin Bright, fullback Tristan Eldridge, rugby union forward Tommy Watego and the brother of Tevita Pangai Jnr, Jermaine.

With Gungahlin Oval closed following the downpour of last weekend, this match has been shifted to Jamison Oval at Macquarie.

Team news: Raiders junior foward Lachlan Lewis has been named on the bench for the Bulls. He's on the comeback from a long injury layoff. Zac Patch will wear the No. 7 jersey for the Sharks, partnering Matt Woolnough in the halves. Tommy Watego will start at prop, while Jermaine Pangai has been named on the bench.

My tip: The Sharks should be too strong in this one.

Queanbeyan Blues v Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Blues and Kangaroos are two powerhouses of the Canberra Raiders Cup. No team has won more premierships than the Blues. They have taken the title 26 times, and have been runners up 24 times. The Kangaroos rank third for most premierships, with nine Grand Final wins to their name - the most recent just last year. So the Queanbeyan derby has often been hard fought and a big occasion.



The Blues, however, fell on hard times in 2023. It was the season from hell for coach Simon Woolford and his team. The club did not have enough numbers to field a reserve grade team - and injuries meant they sometimes played without a full complement. They had to forfeit one match, against the Sharks. Jeremy Braun has taken over as first grade coach this year, after he coached the Under 19s in 2023. Charlie Woolford and Ranapiri Baker have both headed to Yass, but Braun has added Raiders juniors Kalani Skipps and Josh Pokoney and Bushrangers Jayden McLachlan and Blake Murray.



Last year was a triumph for Roos captain-coach Sam Williams. The Queanbeyan outfit was the No. 1 team in both attack and defence, by a large margin. The Roos lost only twice all year, while Williams himself was named the best player in the league, winning the 2023 McIntyre Medal. The Roos have lost some players, including outside backs Harry Quinlan and Steven Numambo, and veteran forward Sia Soliola. But the Roos have brought forwards Josh Ayers and Troy Whiley back to the club. And their line up still looks very strong.

Team news: Raiders juniors Jaxex Yow and Jack Sandford have both been named for the Kangaroos. Yow will partner Sam Williams in the halves, while Sandford has been included at centre. Veteran Michael Dodson features on the bench. Rugby union recruit Dylan McLachlan line up with his brother Jayden in the Blues' halves, while Raiders juniors Josh Billing and Josh Pokoney have been named in the centres.

My tip: The 2023 premiers should win first up.

Goulburn Bulldogs v Yass Magpies

The Goulburn Bulldogs just missed the finals in 2023, finishing fifth after an up and down season. Player-coach Mitch Cornish won't be able to take to the field in 2024, after the halfback snapped his Achilles tendon during the off season. It is a huge loss for the club, but Cornish will now focus on his coaching duties this year. The Bulldogs have also lost second rower Ron Leapai to Rams. Another big loss. They have picked up Jimmy Russell, who came through the Cronulla Sharks' junior system, and Adam Jeffrey from the Macarthur region. Jeffery is the brother of Goulburn second rower Blake Jeffrey.

Raiders junior Lekani Mpaso will make an appearance on the wing.

My tip: This is a difficult match to tip. Goulburn are always tough on home turf, but the losses of Cornish and Leapai are significant. I might go with the upset here and tip the Magpies.

'It was a bit of a failure': Queanbeyan shakes off last year's Blues

In 2023, the Blues were unable to field a reserves team and even had to forfeit a first-grade game in the Canberra Raiders Cup. But the Blues are back and face the Roos on Saturday in the Queanbeyan derby.

"A strong Queanbeyan Blues is good for the game, there's no doubt about that," Roos captain-coach Sam Williams said. "Last year they went through their troubles and I don't think anyone wants to see that. If you're a rugby league fan, a Blues side forfeiting doesn't help anybody. No doubt we still want to beat them and be the dominant Queanbeyan side.

Queanbeyan derby produces exciting draw

The Queanbeyan derby exceeded every expectation, with both sides leaving nothing on the field against their cross-town rivals.

An inspired comeback from the Blues forced an exciting finish as the visitors scored in the final minute, followed by a clutch sideline conversion from Roos captain-coach Sam Williams to lock up the final scores.
