MATCH REPORT: Raiders Flegg team record big win over Tigers

The Raiders Jersey Flegg team have made it two wins from two after a comprehensive 36-0 win over the Wests Tigers on Saturday. The Raiders flew out of the gates with Jesse Limon finishing a try in the corner, courtesy of a beautiful cut-out pass from Jalen Afamasaga. Mitch Henderson nailed the sideline conversion to lead 6-0.

Afamasaga continued his involvement, this time placing a pin-point grubber kick for a rampaging Noah Martin, who beat two covering defenders to score. Henderson converted to extend the Raiders lead to 12-0 after 15 minutes.

Last round: The Canberra Raiders produced a strong 36-0 win over the Wests Tigers in Round 2 of the Jersey Flegg Cup. It was a victory marked by committed defence and some bright attacking football.

The Raiders led 12-0 after 15 minutes, courtesy of tries to winger Jesse Limon and second rower Noah Martin. But the Tigers ground their way back into the game, with a string of penalties giving them plenty of possession in good territory. The Raiders did remarkably well in defence in the 15 minutes before half time - and resolutely held their line.

Five minutes into the second half, dummy half Owen Pattie scored from close range, pushing the home side's lead to 18 points. Centre Regan Carr followed up in the 52nd minute, scoring out wide after a good shift to the left. A forced line drop out gave second rower Delahia Wigmore his opportunity in the 59th minute, while Carr completed his double three minutes later.

This round: The Raiders host the New Zealand Warriors at Seiffert Oval in Round 3. The Warriors have returned to the Jersey Flegg competition in 2024, after a break of four years. They are winless after two rounds, losing to the Sharks (38-10) and Storm (36-10) so far. They conceded six tries to the Storm in Melbourne on Saturday. Centres Salesi Piliu and Sialetili Faeamani were the try scorers for New Zealand.

Team news: The Raiders' team is unchanged from last week.

Canberra Raiders sign young forward on multi-year deal

The Raiders are delighted with a recent signing from Illawarra - rangy back-rower Bailey Sassall. The 20-year-old from the NSW south coast wasn't making much progress in Wollongong, but trialled with the Raiders over the summer and won a two year contract, starting the season in impressive form in the trials.

"He is a very enthusiastic trainer and loves the new environment in Canberra - the change has done him a world of good," Sassall's manager Pierre Tannnous said.

Last round: The Canberra Raiders continued their strong start to the 2024 Jersey Flegg season on Saturday - defeating the New Zealand Warriors, 44-12, at Seiffert Oval.

The Raiders scored a total of eight tries, with winger Kane Rushton getting a hat trick. He'd scored a double inside the first 30 minutes. The attack was open and flowing, with Canberra not afraid to use the edges.

The Green Machine was well in control at half time, leading 28-0. Second half tries to centre Siamani Leuluai and Rushton saw the Raiders take a 38 point lead at the 50 minute mark - before the Warriors scored two consolation tries inside the final 10 minutes or so.

The Raiders lost halfback Mitch Henderson in a late change before the match. He was required to play in NSW Cup. Jaxen Yow filled in for Henderson, and he proved to be a very able replacement. He was busy in attack and was rewarded with his own try eight minutes from full time. He did well to break a tackle and then made a bee line for the white stripe from 10 metres out.

Hooker Owen Pattie also impressed. He crossed in the 10th minute, a good dive over the line from dummy half. The forwards were not to be left out, with prop Vena Patuki-Case scoring the next try under the posts. He ran freely, like a backrower. NSW Under 19s prop, Jake Clydsdale - playing in his first match of the season - followed up, reaching out and planting the ball over the line in the 21st minute.

The victory sees the Raiders undefeated after three rounds and sitting atop the competition ladder.

This round: The Raiders next head to the Shire for a meeting with the Cronulla Sharks on Sunday afternoon. The Sharks recorded a 38-10 win over the Warriors in Round 1 in New Zealand, but fell to the Bulldogs (34-8) in Round 2. The Sharks are coming off a 38-18 loss to the Tigers at Lidcombe on Sunday.

Team news: Jake Clydsdale will start in the pack, at lock, with Tane Kiriona dropping to the bench. There are no other changes to the squad.
