This could be out of date, I could only find the rules for suspensions and trials on line as they applied in the lead up to the 2023 trials… However, this is the situation as I understand it:

Players suspended on the basis of a Grade 1 or 2 charge can play in trials.

Corey Horsburgh is on suspension for a Grade 1 charge, Noah Martin is on suspension for a Grade 2 charge, Sebastian Kris is on suspension for a Grade 3 charge

So Horsburgh and Martin could have played this weekend. But neither were named.

Ethan Strange escapes with a fine

Canberra Raiders halfback Ethan Strange has been charged by the NRL match review committee, following yesterday's pre-season challenge match against the Cowboys.

Strange has been charged with a grade one dangerous throw charge on Cowboys forward Thomas Mikaele. If he takes the early pleas he will pay a $1000 fine, if he fights the charge and loses he will receive a $1500 fine.

Really happy with this result although I certainly could not have argued if he was suspended for a game or two. There was plenty of mitigating factors but he did reach and lift between the legs, putting the player in a dangerous position. Compare that to say Corey Horsburgh whose “shoulder charge” rubbed him out for 5 odd games.

Strange at 6 for round 1, let’s go!

The match review committee are probably feeling a little guilty after the very dodgy and incredibly inconsistent Horsburgh charge.

Without knowing the outcome I was thinking it was a Grade 1. Bottom end of the scale while still deserving of a charge. Good to see it's just a fine and he's free to play round 1. Although considering he'd be close to minimum contract any kind of fine will sting.

That's the problem with the fixed fine system as the penalty is variable relative to earnings. For guys on minimum it's nearly 1% of their annual income. For to top tier players it's 0.1% of their income.

I also struggle with Sticky picking Savage for one game last year but we all think he will be first winger picked.

Would not be shocked to see;

1- Rapana (everyone would have lost their biscuits seeing this in October last year)
2- Hoppa

6- Weeks

9- Levi
10- Guler

14- Starling
15- Saulo

Did anyone else see Smithies drop his forearm into Hastings in the second half?

Thought he might have got a week or two for it.

Hastings was noticeably complaining to the ref.

Good news all around
Bit surprised about the Guler one, thought that might attract a stronger charge.
Live i didnt think there was much in it, but on replay it looked pretty text book

Young needs to pull his head in, that sort of fake tough guy **** is not necessary and hurt his team.

Safe to say there is still some bad blood from Hastings tenure at Wigan.

Foxsports are reporting Hors won't be back from suspension until round 4. Why is there so much conjecture and confusion about his suspension? I don't recall ever seeing it with any other player. He got suspended for 4 games yeah? Missed Sharks round 27, Knights finals week 1, Knights round 1, Tigers round 2. That's 4 weeks. Surely he's back this week.

It's **** bizarre, i am looking at it now. As you say...
Suspended 4 games... missed the sharks game, missed the knights game... missed week 1 and 2 in 2024.
I even got my primary school kids to do the maths for me to make sure im not **** this up... he's missed 4 games and is back this week.

Is there an unreported injury keeping him out?! I dont know.

The NRL official site says 4 weeks which is where the confusion probably comes from. I'd guess whatever system they use just didn't count the final.

Well the NRL picks and chooses when to count Test matches, All Stars, Trial games for suspensions. Wouldn't surprise me if they now don't want to count a finals game as part of the suspension, haha

Maybe Horse n Stick know what they're doing and are gonna miss this week on purpose, then later in the year if Horse gets a charge Stick will say "well you know back in round 3 you guys actually stuffed up and Horse missed 1 extra game" and get that charge written off, maybe save it for important game/time lol

Elliott Whitehead out with calf injury

Canberra Raiders Captain Elliott Whitehead has been ruled out of Sunday's match against the Sharks with a calf injury. Whitehead re-injured the calf at training earlier in the week and will miss 1-2 games.

Albert Hopoate will also be assessed before round five, after being ruled out earlier in the week after suffering burns to his arm.

Jordan Rapana and Corey Horsbugh to be assesssed

The Canberra Raiders can provide an injury update following their round five match against the Parramatta Eels. Jordan Rapana aggravated a pre-existing knee injury but was able to return to the field and complete the game. He’ll be assessed this week by medical staff. Corey Horsburgh picked up a minor groin strain and will be assessed this week to see if he is available to take on the Titans.
