MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders upset Knights for Round 1 revenge



Almost six months on from being kicked out of the 2023 finals, the Raiders have sort revenge from their Newcastle counterparts, downing the Knights 28-12 at Hunter Stadium.

There have been plenty of question marks throughout the pre-season around how the new-look Raiders would shape up in 2024 but Ricky Stuart's side opened their season in classic Canberra style, silencing any doubts with a dominant Round 1 performance.

An error-riddled Newcastle side (13) handed the visitors plenty of opportunities in attack and the Raiders stuck to their guns with their star forwards laying the platform and new recruit Zac Hosking bagging a double.

That win was more satisfying than any of our meagre wins last year.

Early call, but maybe if we are going to grind, we may as well load up with players who actually know how to grind.

You don’t win in grind ball with Wighton kicking out on the full 6 times a game. You win with the likes of Hosking and Smithies turning up with starch for 80 minutes.

Also, for me it was a good sign that I said with 15-20 mins to go that Knights were finished. We had clearly battered them and I knew we were going to win. There was no typical anxiety about a late meltdown.
