We all knew it but this is further evidence that Croker is done. Does not even look up to cup standard.
Also why are we persisting with Semi in the centres while we have Morkos is Flegg?

Re: 2023 Canberra Raiders NSW Cup
The stream got better after we scored.
Puru has been everywhere. He’s got a big motor and is always backing up in support. He looks on the small side but could very much be an option for firsts if he keeps playing this way.
Mooney looked busy at prop without being inspiring. Stuart had a good break on the wing and looked speedy.
Look forward to seeing what the fitness is like in the second half. Ps Jacob Arthur is ****.

42nd min TRY RAIDERS to Elijah Anderson. Simple scrum play, Schneider takes it left and the fullback makes the extra man. No conversion, hits the cross bar and bounces away.

72nd min TRY EELS to Zac Cini out wide. They shift it right and finally get across. That levels it, with Rankin's kick to come. He can't convert from out wide, so it is all locked up with six minutes left.

Re: 2023 Canberra Raiders NSW Cup
Hope we persist with Anderson at the back. He has a much higher ceiling than Hopa. Also nice to have a bit of pace.
Woolford played the 80 and did well.
Puru looked busy and did a lot at first receiver.
I’m not sure what Mooney is.
Understand Croker has been out for a while but he looked disinterested, slow, weak and not up to standard.
Not sure why Semi was playing in the centres.
Schneider still does not look like a 7.

MATCH REPORT: NSW Cup Canberra Raiders victorious in season opener against Parramatta Eels
The Canberra Raiders produced an away victory to open their 2023 season in the NSW Cup, overcoming the Parramatta Eels 16-10. Canberra’s power running in the forwards was too strong for Parramatta for most of the encounter. The short balls used by the Raiders’ playmakers along with strong hole-running was a constant threat to the Eels defence.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders produced a first up win in NSW Cup, defeating the Parramatta Eels, 16-10, at Kellyville Park on Saturday. The home team was first to score, with winger Joshuah Minhinnick crossing in the corner in the 7th minute. The Raiders hit back midway through the first half, with new recruit Hohepa Puru making a good break down the middle of the field. That set up the scoring play, with fullback Elijah Anderson injecting himself on the left edge. The teams went to the break all tied up at 6-6.
Parramatta prop Ofahiki Ogden produced an error in the very first tackle of the second half, allowing the Raiders to set an attacking scrum in the red zone. They sent it left, with Anderson again running wide for his second try of the match. It took until the 70th minute for Eels centre Zac Cini to find the equaliser. But the Raiders hit back just three minutes later, with second rower Clay Webb crashing over for the match winnner. The Eels threatened in the dying minutes, but the Raiders were able to hold on.
Hohepa Puru topped the running metres gained (189), while Trey Mooney (129), Josh Allen (106) and Clay Webb (104) also broke the 100 metres gained benchmark in the forwards. Fullback Elijah Anderson produced 122 running metres from 13 runs, along with his two tries and six tackle breaks. Half Brad Schneider posted two line break assists and one try assist. Puru led the tackle count (52), followed by Zac Woolford (37), Lachlan Lewis (32) and Trey Mooney (31).
The Raiders will play their first home match of the year when they host the North Sydney Bears in Round 2. The Bears suffered a Round 1 loss to the Panthers, 18-12, at Penrith on Friday night. The Bears opened strongly, with five eighth Jesse Marschke scoring in the 20th minute. But it was the Bears' only try of the first half, and they trailed 12-6 at the break. The Panthers controlled proceedings in the second half. Norths lock Zach Dockar-Clay crossed inside the final five minutes, but that proved to be too late.
The Bears finished in third place on the ladder in 2022 (Raiders sixth), but lost both of their finals matches against the Panthers (22-14) and Bulldogs (22-10).
Team news: Lachlan Lewis has dropped out of the side, after he left the field injured in Round 1. Jayden Clarkson was switched to the bench in a late change last week. He's named at starting prop, with Trey Mooney shifting back to the second row.

Re: 2023 Canberra Raiders NSW Cup
I’ve watched him play half a trial and these highlights only. Dug deep on his stats in his most important games only.
But Puru is obviously the best 13 at the club already. Obviously. They need make moves to get him into the top 30 to play first grade ASAP.

He needs more time to build up his physicality but 100% get him a deal.
Re: 2023 Canberra Raiders NSW Cup
He’s no lay down misere to be ready instantly but his performance in a NSW Cup final last year after being a bit part player, how he looked in the trial and how he performed yesterday indicate to me he’s ready for first grade.
It’s potentially a shocker of an early crow on my part but the club doesn’t have an alternative in that position other than to play someone out of position.

He is on a development contract so no firsts until round 13? That to me sounds pretty close to right if Whitehead, CHN and Young all stay injury free.
Very much a Havali / B Smith style lock but without the hooker aspect……yet…

I think he’s got huge potential… I’m very high on him. If we could, I’d pick him for the fg 13 next week

I know it’s only NSW Cup / trial but this does not seem to effect him. He seems to have a good core / lower centre of gravity which is almost a positive for him.greeneyed wrote:I was surprised at the season launch by how small he is.
Said it before but would love to see him as our 14 with Kris / CHN as second row / backs back up and 2 props (plus whoever we get to start at 13)
11- Young
12- CHN
13- Whitehead
14- Puru (lock / hooker for 10-20)
15- Kris (back row / HIA and injury cover for back 5 / Roaming role)

Technically the other big is starting at 13 and then rolls through the prop rotation.

Re: 2023 Canberra Raiders NSW Cup
He might be small but the dude is tough as nails
In this game according to NRL.com
189 metres on 21 runs, 57 post contact metres, 2.46s play the ball, couple of tackle breaks and a LB... granted, it's at NSW cup level, so the caveat is of course that probably wont translate 1 for 1 at NRL level but at the next tier below, the dude consistently punches through the line and wins his ruck as a ball carrier
Add in 52+ tackles (TE% isnt great... but when you're making 50+ tackles, you're bound to miss and fall off a few too. Ill be keen to see what a TE% looks like for him in a 30 tackle game flow) and this is kid is proving that size isnt a hinderance to his game at NSW Cup level.
Take out the halves and hooker, and he had the most passes in the game too, showing he's got that ball distribution aspect to his game... if he keeps anything close to this up, the moment he's available to be selected in FG, the club needs to get a proof of concept on whether he can hang at that level.
Re: 2023 Canberra Raiders NSW Cup
I know these height and weight things on websites are all Bull but I figure they’re all probably Bull in the same range and direction
He’s listed on the raiders site at 177cm and 92kg
Victor Radley is listed at 182cm and 92kg
Brandon Smith is listed at 180cm and 94kg
Ignoring whether the figures are actually accurate, build wise he’s in that ball park
And those guys manage to be effective nrl players at that size
