FULL TIME

South Sydney Rabbitohs 20
Canberra Raiders 12

That will make it very difficult for the Raiders to make the top five. Rabbitohs jump over them.

MATCH REPORT: South Sydney Rabbitohs defeat Canberra Raiders in NSW Cup

The Canberra Raiders have gone down to the South Sydney Rabbitohs 20-12 in Round 21 of the NSW Cup at Canberra Stadium.

A penalty goal to the Rabbitohs in the 70th minute gave the away side a narrow lead before a try in the 73rd minute put the game beyond doubt. The game saw the return of Corey Horsburgh and Trey Mooney, who had both spent time on the sideline in recent weeks with illness and injury respectively.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders lost their fourth game in a row when they went down, 20-12, to the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Canberra Stadium on Saturday. It was a tight first half, with only two tries scored. Raiders hooker Mitch Souter crossed in the 11th minute, after good offloads from Peter Hola and Corey Horsburgh. Poor defence from Canberra in the middle of the field saw Rabbitohs foward Tallis Duncan score just two minutes before half time. The two teams went to the break level, at six apiece.

The Rabbitohs took the lead, seven minutes into the second half, courtesy of a try to hooker Romano Cook. Canberra hit back with a spectacular try in the 53rd minute, after Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad shifted the ball to the right deep in the Raiders' own half. Brilliant running from Brad Morkos and Steven Numambo put Manase Kaho in under the posts. But that was the end of the scoring for the Green Machine. The Rabbitohs took a 14-12 lead in the 69th minute through a Jack Campagnolo penalty goal, after Numambo was sin binned for a professional foul. The match was sealed when a try was awarded to centre Jake Tago in the 74th minute, after a blatant foward pass. Two minutes before the end of the match, former Raiders forward Tyson Hodge was sent off for an old fashioned stiff arm to the head of Canberra prop Peter Hola. It made no difference to the result.

Fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad ran for more than 200 metres with the ball in hand (214), while prop Corey Horsburgh came close (199). Brad Morkos (162), Manase Kaho (148) and Steven Numambo (107) broke the 100 metres gained mark in the backs. Peter Hola (119) also broke it in the forwards. Horsburgh (43), Mitch Souter (39) and Clay Webb (33) topped the tackle count.

The Raiders have fallen to seventh place on the competition ladder, with the Rabbitohs jumping them into sixth. With three games remaining in the regular season, the Raiders can still make the top five. But they'll probably need to win all three - which are against teams below them on the ladder - and hope other results fall their way. They next face the 11th placed Magpies at Leichhardt. They have won only four games this season, but have had some recent success. In their past five matches, they have had wins over the Knights (18-12) and Panthers (32-20). But they are coming off a 56-6 loss to the Panthers on Saturday at Penrith.

Team news: The Raiders have lost Semi Valemei to a rib injury, but have yet to name his replacement at centre. Matt Frawley is out, with Josh James taking over at five eighth. Trey Mooney comes into the second row, replacing Mitchell Spencer. Jayden Clarkson has been named at lock, with Corey Horsburgh promoted to the NRL squad. Lachlan Lewis and Josh Allen have been added to the bench, with Loghan Lewis dropping out of the squad. The Raiders have only named a three man bench at this stage.

Season record: Raiders: 9 and 9, 1 draw declared (7th, +24)
Magpies: 4 and 14, 1 draw (11th, -313)
Form: Raiders: WLLLL
Magpies: WLWLL
Attack: Raiders 26, Magpies 18 points scored per game
Defence: Raiders 25, Magpies 34 points conceded per game

MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders hang on in a heart stopper in NSW Cup

Canberra Raiders have kept their finals hopes alive with a come from behind 26-22 victory over a gutsy Western Suburbs Magpies in Round 22 at Leichhardt Oval. Canberra's win leaves them three points shy of fifth spot on the ladder with two rounds of the Knock On Effect NSW Cup remaining.

A Peter Hola try seven minutes from the end looked to be enough for a 26-18 Raiders victory. Magpies five eighth Zane Camroux scored a try within the final minute and the home team turned down the opportunity to convert. With barely enough time for a restart, Magpies centre Triston Reilly found himself in the clear and kicked ahead. He looked home until the ball popped up just out of reach.

Yes they are. He's registered in the NSWRL system as Utuloa, but everyone seems call him Michael... and he's been registered as Michael in the lower grades up until this year.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders held on to win their clash with the Western Suburbs Magpies at Leichhardt Oval, 26-22, on Sunday. They broke a four game losing streak as a result. The Magpies started strongly, with former Raider Junior Tupou scoring a double inside the first 15 minutes. But tries to Ata Mariota and Mitchell Spencer saw the Green Machine head to the break trailing by just two points, 12-10.

Spencer got his double eight minutes into the second half, the result of a good red zone scrum play. That gave the Raiders the lead for the first time in the game. A try to Wests centre Triston Reilly saw the home team take an 18-14 lead at the 65 minute mark. Canberra quickly struck back, with Manase Kaho boring through from dummy half. And then a wonderful, charging run from prop Peter Hola saw him cross in the 74th minute, shrugging off three defenders along the way.

The Raiders seemed safe, leading 26-18 with five minutes remaining. But a last gasp, 85 metre try to Magpies five eighth Zane Camroux set up a helter skelter final minute. The Magpies declined the conversion attempt in the hope of scoring a match leveller. And while Triston Reilly threatened to do just that, he could not gather in his dangerous kick ahead.

Raiders prop Ata Mariota ran for 219 metres with the ball in hand. Josh Allen (158), Peter Hola (149) and Clay Webb (119) also topped the 100 metre mark in the forwards. In the backs, fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad produced almost 200 running metres (194), while wingers Steven Numambo (180) and Michael Asomua (171) were not far behind. Mitch Souter (31), Ata Mariota (26) and Trey Mooney (25) topped the tackle count. Half Brad Schneider posted two try assists, CNK one. Statistically, Ata Mariota was clearly the strongest player in the match.

The Raiders have moved up into sixth place, but are three competition points adrift of the fifth placed Eels - and four away from the fourth placed Bears. There are only two matches remaining for Canberra - against the ninth placed Knights and 12th placed Sea Eagles. The Knights just lost to the Bears, 60-4 - and they are on a three game losing streak. The Eels play the third placed Bulldogs and the Knights in their remaining games. So finals football is not impossible, but they have to hope the Eels lose back to back. And the Raiders must win back to back. It starts on Sunday.

Team news: James Schiller returns to the team at centre, with Mitch Spencer shifting to the second row. Elijah Anderson also returns on the wing, with Steven Numambo dropping out of the squad. Matt Frawley is back at five eighth, with Josh James dropping to the bench. Trey Mooney moves to lock, replacing Jayden Clarkson. Jordan Martin comes in for Jed Stuart on the bench.

The Knights will play Bradman Best and Enari Tuala in the centres in this game, after they were stood down from first grade for disciplinary issues.

Season record: Raiders: 10 and 9, 1 draw declared (6th, +28)
Knights: 7 and 13 (9th, -98)
Form: Raiders: LLLLW
Knights: WWLLL
Attack: Raiders 26, Knights 21 points scored per game
Defence: Raiders 24, Knights 26 points conceded per game

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have kept their finals hopes alive with a 26-12 win over the Newcastle Knights at Hunter Stadium on Sunday. The teams traded tries in the first 30 minutes, with Raiders winger Elijah Anderson scoring in the 15th minute and forward Josh Allen just past the half hour mark. A good attacking grubber from Matt Frawley set up a try to fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad in the final minute of the first half. That gave the Green Machine a 14-8 lead at the break.

The Raiders then comfortably controlled the scoreboard in the second half. Winger James Schiller crossed in the 47th minute, the result of a good Matt Frawley chip to the try line. When Josh James scored, backing up a Josh Allen charge down the middle, the visitors took a 26-8 lead at the 55 minute mark. Knights winger Brayden Musgrove got a consolation try in the final minute.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad (170), Josh Allen (147), Lachlan Lewis (129) and Trey Mooney (129) topped the running metres gained. Clay Webb (35), Trey Mooney (33) and Ata Mariota (33) were the top tacklers. Matt Frawley finished with two try assists, while Brad Schneider and Josh Allen posted one each.

The win ensures the Raiders retain sixth place on the ladder - and are now just one competition point behind the fifth placed Parramatta Eels. The Eels lost, 19-16, to the Bulldogs on Saturday - which has put them in a more vulnerable spot. Fourth place on the ladder is out of the Raiders' reach, after the Bears beat the Magpies, 24-20, at North Sydney Oval on Sunday.

If the Raiders are to make the top five, they must beat the last placed Sea Eagles in their final game of the regular season - and hope the Eels lose to the ninth placed Knights at Kellyville. The Eels will be favourites in that game, so all the Raiders can do is win and hope.

The Sea Eagles are running last, and are on a nine game losing streak. They have won just two games all season. The Sea Eagles lost to the Jets at Brookvale, 50-8, in their last outing.

Team news: Albert Hopoate was named at centre for the Raiders, in place of James Schiller. Schiller is 18th man for the NRL team. We can expect a late change, however, with Hopoate called into the NRL team as cover for an injured Nick Cotric.

Season record: Raiders: 11 and 9, 1 draw declared (6th, +42)
Sea Eagles: 2 and 19 (12th, -416)
Form: Raiders: LLLWW
Sea Eagles: LLLLL
Attack: Raiders 26, Sea Eagles 13 points scored per game

The Eels beat the Knights tonight, 24-4. That means the Raiders cannot make the top five regardless of tomorrow’s results.
