Canberra Raiders Cup: Yass rugby league spectator banned to end 2027 for homophobic referee abuse

Canberra Region Rugby League has sent a clear message homophobic abuse will not be tolerated, banning a spectator from being involved in all rugby league activities -- playing, training or attending games -- until the end of 2027. The message was also a clear showing of support to its officials given the fan's comments were directed towards a touch judge.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 11 Preview

Image

The West Belconnen Warriors are back on top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder, following last Saturday's upset victory for the Queanbeyan Kangaroos over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers. The Queanbeyan Blues have also jumped the Bushrangers into second place - and those two teams now meet in the match of the round on Saturday. It will also be the free live stream game on Bar TV Sports.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Queanbeyan Blues

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers had been undefeated in six straight matches heading into last weekend's clash with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The closest they'd come to a loss was the 26 all draw with the West Belconnen Warriors in Round 6. But the Kangaroos sprang a big upset at Freebody, running out 27-18 winners. The Bushies lost top spot on the competition ladder as a result, after holding it for just one week. They will now be aiming to wrest back second place on the ladder when they host the Queanbeyan Blues on Saturday.

The Blues are on a six game winning streak after beating the Woden Valley Rams, 26-16, last weekend at Seiffert. The Blues had scored 40 points or more in their preceding five matches - so the Rams proved to be tougher opposition for the Queanbeyan outfit. But a hat trick to fullback Matt Parsons helped ensure the win for the home team. Blues player coach Terry Campese thought that his team had missed a number of opportunities to produce more points.

"It was just the execution of that last pass. I think we bombed four or five tries in the first half," Campese told
The Canberra Times after the game. "We don't have to score off every play because I think we blew a lot of those opportunities on play two or three."

Saturday's match will be a big early test of both teams' premiership credentials. The Blues have the best attacking record in the competion, while the Bushrangers have the best defence. Even though this match will be played on the Bushies' home turf, I think the Blues might just have the edge. One way or other, make sure you're watching.

Season record: Bushrangers 6 and 2, 1 draw (3rd, +113)
Blues 7 and 2 (2nd, +149)
Form: Bushrangers WDWWL
Blues WWWWW
Attacking record: Bushrangers 31, Blues 37 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 17, Blues 21 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 2 Blues 32 defeated Bushrangers 20 at Seiffert Oval

Gungahlin Bulls V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Gungahlin Bulls are now on a six game losing streak, after going down to the West Belconnen Warriors 23-12, last Saturday. Bulls centre Kieran Reilly produced a double, but the Warriors had more strike, with their winger Brandon Withers getting a hat trick. It has been a difficult year for Gungahlin, the 2021 minor premiers. Last year they seemed to always find a way to win close matches. But not this year. Three of their past six losses have been by a margin of just two points. They also lost their season opener to the Warriors by three points. They will hope to turn that around this coming Saturday when they host the Goulburn Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs are in a whole world of pain this week. After winning the first three games of the season, they've won only one of their past six games. When they beat the Kangaroos by 20 points at Freebody two weeks ago, thing seemed to be looking up. But last weekend, they suffered a 44 point drubbing on home soil at the hands of the Sharks, conceding 10 tries along the way.

This is a tough match to tip. The Bulldogs have the better numbers, but they have recently been inconsistent at best. The Bulls are at home and are traditionally tough to beat at Gungahlin. But the Dogs have come up with two away victories in 2022 - and they produced a big win over the Bulls in Round 2. I'll go with the away team here.

Season record: Bulls 1 and 8 (8th, -48)
Bulldogs 4 and 5 (5th, +12)
Form: Bulls LLLLL
Bulldogs LLLWL
Attacking record: Bulls 22, Bulldogs 28 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 27, Bulldogs 27 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 2 Bulldogs 48 defeated Bulls 16 at Goulburn Arena

Woden Valley Rams V Yass Magpies

The Woden Valley Rams were handed the wooden spoon in 2022, winning just two games and drawing two. But they have done remarkably well to turn things around under new coach Billy Thomson. A local junior, Thomson won premierships as a player with the Rams in both Under 19s and first grade. The Rams might have lost to the Blues last week, but Thomson was taking positives from the match.

"We had a lot of disruptions. It's been a few weeks since we last played, so we had to make four or five changes to a winning side," Thomson told The Canberra Times. "I thought we competed very well, especially against such a big pack. It gives us something to build on and we will be better for it."

The Yass Magpies head to Phillip this week on a five game losing streak - after notching up their only win of the season against the Gungahlin Bulls in Round 4. Sadly for the Magpies, they have the worst attacking and defensive record in the competition on a per game basis. The Rams to win at home in this one.

Season record: Rams 6 and 3 (4th, +14)
Magpies 1 and 7 (9th, -136)
Form: Rams LWWWL
Magpies LLLLL
Attacking record: Rams 24, Magpies 16 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 22, Magpies 33 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 2 Rams 40 defeated Magpies 22 at Walker Park

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Belconnen United Sharks

Former Canberra Raiders half Sam Williams was a surprise game day inclusion for the Queanbeyan Kangaroos last weekend - as new captain. The 31 year old Williams had decided to finish his time with the Raiders just two weeks ago - keen to ensure that he was not standing in the way of young players on the way up at the Green Machine. Williams was solid in his debut in maroon and white, but was clearly still settling into his new digs. He did recover one kick ahead to help set up a try - and kicked a field goal in the final minute, sealing an upset victory, 27-18, over the Bushrangers. Winger Daniel Reid got a hat trick, scoring three of the Kangaroos' five tries.

The Roos' opponents on Saturday were also unexpectedly on the winners list last weekend. The Sharks shocked the Goulburn Bulldogs, running out 54-10 winners over the home team. Ably directed around the park by halves Matthew Woolnough and Zac Patch, the Sharks led 22-0 at half time and went right on with it in the second half. Sharks winger Livai Kaloutolu scored a stunning four tries, while fullback Darcy Leadbitter and winger Regan Carr both got doubles. Carr took over the goal kicking and ended with a personal tally of 20 points.

If both teams play like they did last weekend, this could be a very entertaining match. The numbers suggest a win for the Sharks, but a freezing Freebody is a very tough place for away teams. And now the Kangaroos have Sam Williams on their side. That's just enough to swing my tip to the Kangaroos in this one.

Season record: Kangaroos 3 and 6 (7th, -117)
Sharks 4 and 5 (6th, -56)
Form: Kangaroos WLLLW
Sharks WLLWW
Attacking record: Kangaroos 17, Sharks 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 30, Sharks 30 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 2 Sharks 26 defeated Kangaroos 10 at NSWRL HQ Bruce

Sam Williams bounds straight into Canberra Raiders Cup for Queanbeyan Kangaroos

Former Canberra Raider and new Queanbeyan Kangaroos half Sam Williams won't rule out an NRL comeback, but he'll prioritise his family before making any decisions about his playing future.

"It's a little more difficult than when I was 20 years of age and you're single, waking up every morning to pack your bags and get on the road. I've got a little eight-month-old baby now and my wife Sarah is very settled here in Canberra," Williams said.

MATCH REPORT: The Blues party continues with big win over Bushies

The Queanbeyan Blues have solidified their spot in the top two with a convincing 36-10 win over the third placed Bushrangers at Greenway Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The match belonged to Blues fullback Matthew Parsons who ran circles around his opposition, registering one try and two try assists.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 12 Preview

Image

The Queanbeyan Blues sit on top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder, after their 34-10 victory over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers. But the West Belconnnen Warriors will have the chance to take back the lead this weekend, when they head up the Federal Highway for a clash with the fifth placed Goulburn Bulldogs. It is no doubt the match of the round. The free live stream game on Bar TV Sports will be the Woden Valley Rams’ clash with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

Gungahlin Bulls V Yass Magpies

Sadly for these two teams, this match is a battle to avoid the wooden spoon. Both clubs have only recorded one win so far this season. The home team, Gungahlin, is now on a seven game losing streak. They again lost narrowly last Saturday, to the Goulburn Bulldogs - by just four points (12-8). In their seven game losing run, they have lost by two points three times. And now, by four or less four times. The Bulls went to the break all tied up with the Bulldogs, 8-8. A powerhouse run to Bulldogs fullback Dillon Rota produced a try five minutes into the second half - and that proved to be the difference between the teams.

The Yass Magpies are on a six game losing streak, their last victory coming against the Bulls back in Round 4. They are coming off a 32-8 defeat at the hands of the Woden Valley Rams at Phillip. Fullback Bayley Maher scored the Magpies' only try of the game in the 15th minute, chasing a kick from half Josh Fatore. The Rams trailed by only two points, 10-8, at half time. But it was all the Rams in the second half.

The Bulls have had a surprising fall from grace in season 2022. Last year they always seemed to be able to do what what was needed to win the tight games. Not this year. But the Magpies have probably had an even more painful season. They have the worst attacking and defensive record in the competition on a per game basis. I'll tip the Bulls at home in this one.

Season record: Bulls 1 and 9 (8th, -52)
Magpies 1 and 9 (9th, -160)
Form: Bulls LLLLL
Magpies LLLLL
Attacking record: Bulls 21, Magpies 15 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 26, Magpies 33 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 4 Magpies 32 defeated Bulls 16 at Walker Park

Belconnen United Sharks V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Belconnen United Sharks have produced some good recent form, but were out-pointed by the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 31-24, at Freebody Oval last Saturday. Sharks centre Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai, turning out against his old team, was the first to score in just the third minute. The Roos then proceeded to pile on four straight tries. A Sam Williams field goal right on half time gave the Kangaroos a 23-4 lead at the break.

The Sharks were not down for the count. Tries to David Williams, Jacob Piper and Livai Kaloutolu - who have all recently represented in the Raiders' juniors - saw the Belconnen outfit trail by only five points at the 60 minute mark. With 13 minutes remaining, a great Sam Williams break from near half way set up a try to Roos fullback Jackson Deacon. But the Sharks again fought back in the 73rd minute , with half Matt Woolnough crashing over under the posts. A Matt Horvat penalty goal in the final minute put the result beyond doubt for the Roos.

This week, the Sharks host the fourth placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers. It is a match they probably need to win if they are to keep their finals chance alive. The Bushies are coming off a 36-10 defeat at the hands of the Queanbeyan Blues. It had been billed as a test of both team's premiership credentials - and the Blues left little doubt that they are the real deal this year, yet again. They were disrupted by illness, but scored five tries in the first half, to lead 24-0 at the break. They extended that lead to 36 points at the 65 minute mark. Player-coach Terry Campese orchestrated the victory in his inimitable style, despite injuring his leg. He only left the field once the match was sewn up. The Bushrangers scored consolation tries to Patrick Birch and Damien Hayden in the final 10 minutes.

The Bushrangers have now recorded back to back losses, so their recent form line is not looking that great. I'll tip Tuggeranong, but we shouldn't be surprised if the Sharks produce a win with some brilliant attack. They did that only two weeks ago, when they scored 50 against the Bulldogs.

Season record: Sharks 4 and 6 (6th, -63)
Bushrangers 6 and 3, 1 draw (4th, +87)
Form: Sharks LLWWL
Bushrangers DWWLL
Attacking record: Sharks 24, Bushrangers 27 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 30, Bushrangers 19 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 4 Bushrangers 52 defeated Sharks 16 at Greenway Oval

Woden Valley Rams V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The clash between the Woden Valley Rams and Queanbeyan Kangaroos shapes as one of the best of the weekend. Both teams are last start winners. The Rams are coming off a 32-8 victory over the Yass Magpies, after producing a dominant second half. Winger Nicholas Baldwin got a double. He's running second on the top try scorers list with 10 tries, behind Blues fullback Matt Parsons (14). The Roos had a 31-24 victory over the Sharks last round, with new half back and captain Sam Williams really starting to have an impact.

Like the Sharks, the Roos are in must win territory if they're to keep in touch with the top four - and to keep their finals hopes alive. Both the Sharks and Roos are five competition points adrift of the fourth placed Bushrangers. The Kangaroos have improved over the season, no doubt, and Sam Williams is now a big asset for them. But based on the form lines and the numbers, it is hard to go past the Rams at home in this clash.

Season record: Rams 7 and 3 (3rd, +38)
Kangaroos 4 and 6 (7th, -110)
Form: Rams WWWLW
Kangaroos WLLWW
Attacking record: Rams 25, Kangaroos 18 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 21, Kangaroos 29 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 4 Rams 34 defeated Kangaroos 28 at Freebody Oval

Goulburn Bulldogs V West Belconnen Warriors

If the Woden Valley Rams have been the biggest surprise packet of the 2022 season, the West Belconnen Warriors wouldn't be far behind. The return of Bobby Roberts and Ryan McQueen to the club has been a big boost, while play maker Bayley Graham has been in some great form. The Westies have lost only one game all year - and in that sense, they're in a better position than the Queanbeyan Blues. They're coming off their second bye of the season, having beaten the Gungahlin Bulls, 23-12, in their last match.

The Bulldogs had a narrow win over the Bulls last week, but they've recently been struggling to reproduce the form they showed in their opening three victories. There's very little difference between these teams in terms of their attacking record, but the Warriors have an advantage in defence. I'll tip the Warriors, but the Bulldogs are generally hard to beat at home.

Season record: Bulldogs 5 and 5 (5th, +16)
Warriors 7 and 1, 1 draw (2nd, +69)
Form: Bulldogs LLWLW
Warriors DWWLW
Attacking record: Bulldogs 27, Warriors 27 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 25, Warriors 20 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 4 Warriors 37 defeated 30 Bulldogs at Kippax

Canberra Raiders Cup: Zac Patch new Belconnen United Sharks player-coach, replacing Scott Logan

A fortnight ago former Belconnen Sharks head coach Scott Logan had just led his side to a 54-10 away win against the Goulburn Bulldogs. Two weeks later and he is no longer head coach. It is unclear why this is the case, with Belconnen remaining tight-lipped and The Canberra Times unable to contact Logan. Zac Patch and Jake Hawkins have been awarded player-coach roles at the club.

Canberra Raiders Cup: New and improved Woden Valley Rams secure nail-biting victory over Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Woden Valley Rams have sent a clear message to the rest of the Canberra Raiders Cup competition, securing a last-minute 34-30 victory against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

"In the past this side probably would have just thrown their hands up and had enough of it," Rams coach Billy Thomson said. "They aren't doing that anymore and they are fighting for the full 80 minutes."

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Preview

Image

The West Belconnen Warriors are back on top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder, after a grinding 16-10 win over the Bulldogs in Goulburn last Sunday. Round 13 is headlined by Saturday's southern derby on Saturday, when the fourth placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers host the third placed Woden Valley Rams at Greenway. The Rams are still right in the running for a top two finish, while the Bushrangers will be looking to stop a three game losing streak.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Woden Valley Rams

This is the match of the round, no doubt. There's a lot resting on it, for both teams. The Bushrangers were almost cruising until the last three games. They crashed to their third straight loss at Bruce last Saturday, with the Belconnen United Sharks running out 22-16 winners.

The Sharks were first to score in the 22nd minute. The Bushrangers failed to defuse a kick close to their own goal line, with halfback Jack Mills crossing out wide. Tuggeranong took advantage of a spilled bomb just seven minutes later, with Patrick Birch scoring under the posts. Tries on either side of half time to Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai and fullback Darcy Leadbitter saw the home team go to a 12-6 lead. In the 53rd minute, a length of the field intercept try to winger Lachlan Tindale extended the Sharks' margin to 10 points. And while the Bushies fought back with two tries in the final 15 minutes, a great cross field run and a try in the corner from five eighth Matt Woolnough was enough to seal the win for the Sharks.

The Woden Valley Rams, under new coach Billy Thomson, have probably been the biggest surprise packets of the 2022 season. They finished last on the ladder in 2021, winning just twice. This year, they already have eight wins. Last Saturday, the Rams prevailed in an exciting contest with a Queanbeyan Kangaroos side that has been rejuvenated by the recent addition of former Raiders halfback Sam Williams. The lead changed five times in the second half, after the Kangaroos went to the break with a six point advantage. Inside the final five minutes, a try to fullback Jackson Deacon gave the Kangaroos a 30-28 lead. But the home team was not finished, with Michael Geiger crashing over near the posts in the final minute. It produced an exhilarating 34-30 win for the Rams.

"In the past this side probably would have just thrown their hands up and had enough of it," Rams coach Thomson told The Canberra Times. "They aren't doing that anymore and they are fighting for the full 80 minutes."

The Bushrangers will be desperate and have the home ground advantage on Saturday. But it's hard to go past the Rams' form line. I'll tip Woden to reverse the Round 3 result between these two teams.

Season record: Bushrangers 6 and 4, 1 draw (4th, +81)
Rams 8 and 3 (3rd, +42)
Form: Bushrangers WWLLL
Rams WWLWW
Attacking record: Bushrangers 26, Rams 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 19, Rams 22 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 3 Bushrangers 36 defeated Rams 6 at Phillip Oval

Belconnen United Sharks V West Belconnen Warriors

The Belconnen United Sharks have been given a new lease of life since the recent arrival of former Raiders player Zac Patch from the Mackay Cutters - and his Cutters team mate Jake Hawkins. Patch was a star for the Gungahlin Bulls last year, but he headed north. Now back in the national capital due to family reasons, Patch last week took over the coaching reins from Scott Logan.

After last Saturday's win over the Bushrangers, the Sharks have now won three of their past four games. This weekend, they host the ladder leading West Belconnen Warriors. The Warriors won a grinding match at Goulburn against the Bulldogs last Sunday, 16-10. The Warriors led 6-4 at half time. Warriors' lock Harrison Whatman scored early, while Goulburn’s Jyi Little produced a long range intercept try in the 17th minute. Warriors winger Kylan Edwards scored two tries in the north east corner in the opening 12 minutes of the second half. And while Bulldogs five eighth Chris Hart hit back with a good individual try in the 55th minute, that was the end of the scoring.

The Warriors have been boosted by the return this year of fullback Ryan McQueen and half Robert Roberts, while five eighth Bayley Graham has been in great form. They don't have the best defence or attack in the league, but they have lost only one match all season. They don't always look in control, but they have generally done enough to win. I'll go with the Warriors in this contest - but we shouldn't be surprised if the Sharks produce an upset.

Season record: Sharks 5 and 6 (6th, -57)
Warriors 8 and 1, 1 draw (1st, +75)
Form: Sharks LWWLW
Warriors WWLWW
Attacking record: Sharks 23, Warriors 28 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 29, Warriors 21 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 3 Warriors 52 defeated Sharks 6 at Kippax

Queanbeyan Blues V Gungahlin Bulls

The Queanbeyan Blues are on a seven game winning streak. The last game they lost was to their opponent this week, the Gungahlin Bulls, back in Round 3. They are coming off the bye, so they should be fresh. The Blues have built themselves into the best attacking unit in the league, by a big margin. On their winning run, they've scored more than 60 points twice, and more than 40 three times. The Bulls broke a seven game losing streak with an 18-16 win at home against the Yass Magpies last week. Raiders junior Deakin Bright scored a hat trick. That will be a huge relief to coach Neil Bijorac. But it is difficult to see Gungahlin getting a win at Seiffert in this one. I'll tip the home team by a good margin.

Season record: Blues 8 and 2 (2nd, +175)
Bulls 2 and 9 (8th, -50)
Form: Blues WWWLW
Bulls LLLLW
Attacking record: Blues 37, Bulls 20 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 20, Bulls 25 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 3 Bulls 44 defeated Blues 16 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Yass Magpies V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Yass Magpies will be celebrating the official opening of the new grandstand facilities at their home ground, Walker Park, on Saturday. So they'll be hoping they can get the victory against the Goulburn Bulldogs. It'll be tough to do. They are on a seven game losing streak, having won just one game all season. They weren't far from a win last week against the Bulls. And the Bulldogs have produced some up and down recent form. But the attacking and defensive records of the two teams speak for themselves. Goulburn for the win.

Season record: Magpies 1 and 9 (9th, -162)
Bulldogs 5 and 6 (5th, +10)
Form: Magpies LLLLL
Bulldogs LWLWL
Attacking record: Magpies 15, Bulldogs 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 31, Bulldogs 24 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 3 Bulldogs 36 defeated Magpies 6 at Goulburn Arena

Former Canberra Raiders captain Terry Campese helps Queanbeyan Blues fullback Matthew Parsons go to another level

Football has always looked easy for Queanbeyan Blues fullback Matthew Parsons, but the Raiders junior puts his recent development down to a former Raiders captain and Blues coach Terry Campese.

"I would put it down to training and playing with Terry. He has been my mentor since I have been at the Blues and he has helped me heaps," he said. "I have improved my game so much since I have been here. I know how he plays and I know what he is going to do. When he goes, I go."

Warriors fight back to snatch a victory in the Belconnen derby

The West Belconnen Warriors have rallied home to snatch a close 22-18 win over their cross-town rivals in the local Belconnen derby.

The Sharks had a strong opening ten minutes but the Warriors controlled the majority of the game, their goal-line defence shining in the league leader's important win.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Preview

Image

The West Belconnen Warriors and Queanbeyan Blues have consolidated their position as the top two teams of the Canberra Raiders Cup, with both posting their ninth win of the 2022 season last weekend. Round 14 is headlined by Sunday's top four clash between the Warriors and Rams - and it is this week's free live stream match on Bar TV Sports.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Yass Magpies

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers broke a three game losing streak in style last weekend, defeating the Woden Valley Rams, 30-16, in the southern derby at Greenway. The Bushrangers started fast, with a Liam Oakley bomb to the corner producing four points for winger Jack Davison. Further tries to fullback Jack Heyman and boom forward Zac Saddler saw the home team go to an 18-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Rams struck back in the 29th minute, with big centre Luke Ellis taking advantage of the overlap out wide. But two Tuggeranong tries, in quick succession, to Michael Brophy and Davison saw the Bushies go to the break with a 26-4 lead.

The Rams opened the first half with a try to Jesse Taws, after stunning run from winger Liam Howard from his own goal line. That cut the margin to 16 points and from there is was a bit of an arm wrestle. But when Jack Davison got his hat trick in the 68th minute, the result was beyond doubt. A try to the Rams' Liam Howard in the final stages was a consolation only.

The Bushrangers' opponents this week, the Yass Magpies, are on an eight game losing streak. They are coming off a 36-22 loss to the Goulburn Bulldogs at Walker Park. The home team led by four points at half time, 12-8, but the Bulldogs put things together after the break. They scored four straight tries in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, taking a 28-12 lead. Tries to hooker Jason Gray and winger Laberato Tauoqooqo in the final few minutes iced the game for the Bulldogs. While there were some promising signs for Yass in that game, it's hard to see them upsetting the Bushrangers this Saturday. I'll tip Tuggeranong by a good margin at home.

Season record: Bushrangers 7 and 4, 1 draw (4th, +95)
Magpies 1 and 10 (9th, -176)
Form: Bushrangers WLLLW
Magpies LLLLL
Attacking record: Bushrangers 27, Magpies 16 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 19, Magpies 32 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 5 Bushrangers 30 defeated Magpies 10 at Walker Park

Gungahlin Bulls V Belconnen United Sharks

The Bulls have won only one match in their past nine games. They broke a seven game losing streak in Round 12 with a two point win over the Magpies. But last weekend they conceded nine tries and 50 points to the Queanbeyan Blues. It ended in a 50-24 defeat for Gungahlin. On the bright side, they crossed for five tries themselves, with promising fullback/half Calab Edwards getting a double.

The Belconnen United Sharks have been given a new lease of life since the recent arrival of former Raiders player Zac Patch from the Mackay Cutters - and his Cutters team mate Jake Hawkins. A couple of weeks ago, the pair were given co-coaching duties, taking over the reins from Scott Logan. The Sharks have recently produced big wins over the Magpies (32-8) and Bulldogs (54-10). And while they have recorded back to back losses since then, they really pushed the ladder leading Warriors, going down 22-18. The Sharks have the better form and numbers for mine, so I'll tip the visitors in this one.

Season record: Bulls 2 and 10 (8th, -76)
Sharks 5 and 7 (6th, -61)
Form: Bulls LLLWL
Sharks WWLWL
Attacking record: Bulls 12, Sharks 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 27, Sharks 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 5 Sharks 30 defeated Bulls 28 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Queanbeyan Blues

The Queanbeyan derby is always a great match, fiercely contested. After a slow start, the Blues have built themselves into the form side of the competition. They are very clearly the most potent attacking team, with 37 year old five eighth, Terry Campese, still in great touch. The former Raiders captain's knees are probably shot, but he sets his own tempo and knows exactly how to steer his team around the park. After beating the Bulls last weekend, the Blues are on an eight game winning streak. In that run, they've scored more than 60 points twice, 50 points once, and more than 40 three times.

The Kangaroos have been struggling in 2022, but the recent arrival of former Raiders half, Sam Williams, means the west Queanbeyan outfit now have their own star playmaker. They are coming off a bye so they should be fresh. They will want to put their last start loss to the Rams (34-30) out of their minds - as well as the Round 5 loss to the Blues (64-10) at Seiffert. While the Kangaroos will have the home ground advantage, the Blues should win this one.

Season record: Kangaroos 4 and 7 (7th, -114)
Blues 9 and 2 (2nd, +201)
Form: Kangaroos LLWWL
Blues WWWWW
Attacking record: Kangaroos 19, Blues 38 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 30, Blues 20 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 5 Blues 64 defeated Kangaroos 10 at Seiffert Oval

West Belconnen Warriors V Woden Valley Rams

Sunday's top four clash at Kippax is very clearly the match of the round - and, fortunately, it avoids a clash with the Raiders' NRL match against the Warriors on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors have lost just once all season - to the Blues (46-18) in Round 9. Since then, they've put together three straight wins. But they were seriously challenged last weekend by the Sharks in the Belconnen derby.

The Sharks shocked the Warriors early, going to a 12-0 lead inside the first 10 minutes. In just the third minute, five eighth Matt Woolnough put forward David Williams into a gap, perfectly. They were in again three minutes later when Jacob Piper crossed. He stepped back inside and found a huge hole in the middle of the field. It was an arm wrestle over the next 20 minutes. But a double to forward Mitch Shaw in the space of five minutes put the Warriors back in business. The teams went to the break at 12 apiece.

In the 45th minute, an error from Sharks winger Taka Maraka on his own goal line gifted a try to Warriors centre Ryley Thomas - and the visitors had the lead for the first time. Three minutes later, another Sharks error gave the Warriors a scrum, with the feed, 10 metres out from the try line. Hooker Harry Brown, binding in at lock, simply picked the ball up at the base of the scrum and scored the easiest of tries. Sharks prop Sonny Tupuola crashed over with just over 10 minutes remaining - cutting the Warriors' lead to just four points. It set up an exciting finish, but the Warriors were able to hold on.

The Rams are coming off a 14 point loss to the Bushrangers. But they have eight wins to their name and they've been the biggest surprise packet of the season. They finished last on the ladder in 2021, winning just twice. So it's a good story for coach Billy Thomson and his team. I'll tip the Warriors in a close contest. Don't be surprised if the Rams can spring an upset.

Season record: Warriors 9 and 1, 1 draw (1st, +79)
Rams 8 and 4 (3rd, +28)
Form: Warriors WLWWW
Rams WLWWL
Attacking record: Warriors 28, Rams 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 21, Rams 23 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 5 Warriors 36 defeated Rams 20 at Phillip Oval

Four-point difference at top heats up Canberra Raiders Cup finals chase

Four points are all that separate the top four teams in the Canberra Raiders Cup. Woden Valley Rams player Kosta Posantzis knows this weekend will be tough but an important test for his team’s finals hopes.

"West Belconnen Warriors are always a tough game for us," Posantzis said. "We haven't won too many in the past, but our season has to really start here to get to finals."

Sam Williams's Queanbeyan Kangaroos topple Terry Campese's Queanbeyan Blues

Sam Williams was outstanding in leading the Queanbeyan Kangaroos to a stunning 38-22 Canberra Raiders Cup victory over Campese's Blues on Saturday afternoon. Twenty minutes of madness proved the difference between the two sides, Roos turning a 10-6 deficit into a 30-10 half-time lead to effectively seal the contest before the break.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Woden Valley Rams upset West Belconnen Warriors in top four clash

Woden Valley had an upset 22-12 victory over West Belconnen in the match of the round in the Canberra Raiders Cup to shake up the run to the finals.

"This meant a lot to the club," coach Billy Thomson said after the game. "We've been up the pointy end a little bit this year, but haven't really knocked off the biggest sides, and today we had the opportunity to do it and took it. It was a real team-building effort."

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Preview

Image

The Warriors and Blues, both suffered unexpected losses in Round 14 - giving the Rams and Bushrangers a shot at a top two spot on the ladder. With just four rounds in the regular season remaining, the top four is looking settled, with the Bulldogs and Sharks five competition points adrift of the fourth placed Bushrangers. But the Goulburn and Belconnen outfits will still be hoping they can make a late charge.

This weekend's match of the round takes place on Sunday, when the ladder leading Warriors take on the Bushrangers. The free live stream game is Saturday's clash between the Rams and Bulldogs.

Yass Magpies V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Yass Magpies are now on a nine game losing streak, after falling to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, 28-10, at Greenway last Saturday. The Bushies started fast and were almost always in control of the game. Tuggeranong winger Jack Davison got a hat trick, while his wing partner Jayden Pollard bagged a double.

The Magpies' opponent this week, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos are coming off an upset, 38-22, win in the Queanbeyan derby at Freebody on Saturday. The home team took a 30-10 lead to the break, and retained control in the second half. In a battle between former Raiders playmakers Terry Campese and Sam Williams, it was Williams who came out in front.

Campese set up the first try of the match with a big kick downfield, with young half Charlie Woolford taking advantage in just the second minute of the game. Campese scored himself just after the 15 minute mark. However a loose offload from "Campo" also led to a length of the field try for Raiders junior half, Thomas Casey just before half time.

A Sam Williams kick to the corner in the sixth minute produced a try to second rower Jonathon Mose in the corner. Williams also made a great break up the middle of the field near the 30 minute mark, setting up a four pointer for lock James Horvat under the posts. But Casey probably outdid both of them, scoring a double and producing two try assists.

The Kangaroos are seven competition points away from the fourth placed Bushrangers, so the finals are almost beyond them. But they'll still want to keep on winning and hope. They should be too strong for the Magpies, even though Yass are on home turf.

Season record: Magpies 1 and 11 (9th, -194)
Kangaroos 5 and 7 (7th, -100)
Form: Magpies LLLLL
Kangaroos LWWLW
Attacking record: Magpies 15, Kangaroos 21 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 31, Kangaroos 29 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 6 Kangaroos 20 defeated Magpies 12 at Freebody Oval

Woden Valley Rams V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Woden Valley Rams just keep on winning in 2022 - and last Sunday they upset the ladder leaders, the Warriors, 22-12, at Kippax. Up until that match, the Warriors had lost just once all season. The Rams have now won nine games, as many as the Warriors and Blues. Quite a turnaround from 2021, when they won just two matches. The win last Sunday meant the Rams drew level with the second placed Blues on competition points. Only points differential separates them.

It was a see-sawing match against the Warriors, with the lead changing five times. A try to Rams half, Jesse Taws saw the Rams take the lead for the final time in the 62nd minute. And it wasn't until a converted try to hooker Kosta Posantzis in the 77th minute that the match was put beyond doubt. Rams centre Gideon Afemui was the player of the match.

"This meant a lot to the club," Rams coach Billy Thomson told The Canberra Times after the game. "We've been up the pointy end a little bit this year, but haven't really knocked off the biggest sides, and today we had the opportunity to do it and took it. It was a real team-building effort."

"We are in a position now where we wanted to be, not dreaming of it. We know we were good enough, now let's see where we can take it."

The Rams host the Bulldogs this weekend - and the visitors will be fresh after the bye. Goulburn were last start winners over the Magpies (36-22), but they have been very inconsistent. They've had other recent wins over the Bulls (12-8) and the Kangaroos (38-18), but lost to the Sharks in Round 10 (54-10) and Warriors (16-10). That form line suggests the Rams might be a bit too strong, particularly at home.

Season record: Rams 9 and 4 (3rd, +38)
Bulldogs 6 and 6 (5th, +24)
Form: Rams LWWLW
Bulldogs WLWLW
Attacking record: Rams 25, Bulldogs 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 22, Bulldogs 24 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 6 Rams 34 defeated Bulldogs 16 at Goulburn Arena

Queanbeyan Blues V Belconnen United Sharks

The Blues' eight game winning streak came to an end at Freebody Oval last weekend in the Queanbeyan derby. And given the Rams and Bushrangers are nipping at their heels, they'll want to get straight back onto the winners list when they host the Sharks.

The Sharks produced a big, 44-28, win over the eighth placed Bulls last weekend. The Bulls started well, going to an 18-10 lead at the 30 minute mark. But the Sharks then piled on 22 unanswered points. Two Raiders juniors starred, with Gungahlin's Calab Edwards getting a hat trick, while Sharks winger Regan Carr secured a double.

The Blues still have the best attacking record in the competition, by a fair distance - and their defence isn't too shabby either. The Sharks have developed some attacking brilliance of their own, with the arrival of new player coaches Zac Patch and Jake Hawkins. The Blues will probably be too strong at home, but don't rule out an upset from the Sharks.

Season record: Blues 9 and 3 (2nd, +187)
Sharks 6 and 7 (6th, -45)
Form: Blues WWWWL
Sharks WLWLW
Attacking record: Blues 37, Sharks 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 21, Sharks 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 6 Blues 42 defeated Sharks 16 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce

West Belconnen Warriors V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

This is clearly the match of the round, a battle between first and fourth on the ladder. Only two competition points separate the two teams. The last time they met, the match finished in a draw. The Warriors have generally been doing just enough to win, but couldn't quite get the business done against the Rams last Sunday. The Bushrangers recently went on a three game losing streak - falling to the Kangaroos (27-18), Blues (36-10) and Sharks (22-16). But back to back wins over the Rams (30-16) and Magpies (28-10) suggest they are back on track.

This is a must win for both teams if they hope to lock in a vital top two finish. The Bushies have a slightly better attacking and defensive record, but the Warriors have the better form line. This match could easily go either way. I'll tip the Warriors at home, but I can't say I do that with any confidence. It's a must see game.

Season record: Warriors 9 and 2, 1 draw (1st, +69)
Bushrangers 8 and 4, 1 draw (4th, +113)
Form: Warriors LWWWL
Bushrangers LLLWW
Attacking record: Warriors 26, Bushrangers 27 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 21, Bushrangers 18 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 6 Bushrangers 26 drew Warriors 26 at Greenway Oval

Canberra Raiders Cup: Woden Valley Rams secure finals position with win over Goulburn Bulldogs

The Woden Valley Rams have secured a position in the Canberra Raiders Cup finals, defeating the Goulburn Bulldogs 20-10 at Phillip Enclosed Oval on Saturday afternoon. After a slow start from both sides, it was a couple of moments of magic from Rams five-eighth Sean Maloney that gave Woden a 14-0 halftime lead.

Despite a late Bulldogs fightback, the Rams held on, with the loss now making Goulburn’s pursuit of finals football incredibly difficult.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Tuggeranong Bushrangers topple West Belconnen Warriors to silence doubters

Tuggeranong captain Zac Saddler has declared any questions about his team's Canberra Raiders Cup premiership credentials have been put to bed. The Bushrangers defeated West Belconnen 26-12 on Sunday.

"They're the benchmark in the competition. We were a little bit understrength, they were a little bit understrength. I'm really proud of the boys who came out and did their job today," Saddler said.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Preview

Image

The results in Round 15 turned the Canberra Raiders Cup upside down, with the Woden Valley Rams and Tuggeranong Bushrangers rising to the top two spots on the competition ladder. It is just about decided which four teams will be playing finals football. Only the Belconnen United Sharks have any real chance of dislodging one of the top four teams. If they're to do it, they have to start with beating the ladder leading Rams this weekend.

West Belconnen Warriors V Yass Magpies

The West Belconnen Warriors have been relegated to third place on the competition ladder - on points differential - after falling to the Bushrangers, 26-12, at Kippax in their last outing. They're now on back to back losses having been defeated by the Rams, 22-12, in Round 14. They've only lost three games this year - but all have been in their past six games. So the cracks are showing.

The Bushrangers were the first to score after just five minutes, when hooker Jack Heyman threw a dummy and crossed from close range. Warriors player coach Ryan McQueen struck back five minutes later, when he kicked ahead in the Tuggeranong red zone - and got a favourable rebound. That made it 6-6.

Former Raider Darby Medlyn shifted from lock to five eighth a month ago - and has looked right at home. A long run from fullback Jack Davison gave the Bushrangers an opportunity just after the 20 minute mark. And Medlyn took advantage, running from dummy half for a four pointer. In the 28th minute, the home team again drew level, thanks to a try from fullback Brandon Withers. But just before the break, centre Karlos Filiga crossed giving the Bushies an 18-12 half time lead.

The only try of the second half came in the 70th minute, for unmarked Bushrangers winger Jayden Pollard. Penalty goals to Darby Medlyn at the 60th minute and the 77th minute helped seal the result for Tuggeranong.

The Magpies won their second match of the season when they upset the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 22-18, at Walker Park in the last round. They broke a nine game losing streak. The Magpies took an 18-0 lead after 25 minutes, courtesy of tries to fullback Liam Grame, second rower Mosese Nasilasila and half Josh Fattore. A Shaun Davis penalty goal just before the break, saw the home team lead 20-0 at half time. Another Davis penalty goal extended the lead at the 50 minute mark. It took until half way through the second half for the Kangaroos to put points on the board, when lock James Horvatt crossed the line. The Roos scored three tries in the final 15 minutes, including a second four pointer for Horvatt. But the Queanbeyan comeback fell short.

The Warriors host the Magpies at Kippax this weekend. West Belconnen's recent form will be a worry for Ryan McQueen - and there was not a lot between these two teams when they met in Round 7. But I'll tip the Warriors to return to the winners' circle in this one.

Season record: Warriors 9 and 3, 1 draw (3rd, +55)
Magpies 2 and 11 (9th, -190)
Form: Warriors WWWLL
Magpies LLLLW
Attacking record: Warriors 25, Magpies 16 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 21, Magpies 30 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 7 Warriors 26 defeated Magpies 18 at Walker Park

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Gungahlin Bulls

The Kangaroos are now definitely out of finals contention after their loss to Yass in their last match. The arrival of Sam Williams gave the Queanbeyan outfit a boost, but it was too late in the end. They host the Gungahlin Bulls in Round 16. The Bulls were last year's minor premiers, but have won just twice in 2022. They suffered losses to the Blues (50-24) and Sharks (44-28) in their last two outings. There is not a lot of difference in the attacking and defensive records of these two teams. But the Roos have the better recent form line. Expect the Kangaroos to win at home.

Season record: Kangaroos 5 and 8 (7th, -104)
Bulls 2 and 11 (8th, -92)
Form: Kangaroos WWLWL
Bulls LLWLL
Attacking record: Kangaroos 21, Bulls 21 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 29, Bulls 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 7 Kangaroos 24 defeated Bulls 22 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Belconnen United Sharks V Woden Valley Rams

The Sharks produced one of the upsets of the year when they beat the Blues at Seiffert Oval in Round 15. It means they're on back to back wins, having disposed of the Bulls, 44-28, at Gungahlin in Round 14.

The Blues started fast, scoring three tries inside the opening 15 minutes. More followed, with the home team taking a 30-6 lead at the 25 minute mark. But the Sharks, inspired by the kicking of player coach Zac Patch, mounted a comeback. Three straight tries for the visitors saw them trail by just six points at half time. The tries kept flowing in the second half. When prop Sonny Tupuola crashed over in the 60th minute, the Sharks took the lead for the first time in the game. A penalty goal close to full time to Belconnen's Regan Carr sealed the 44-36 win. Thirteen tries were scored in all, with Sharks winger Livai Kaloutolu and Blues lock Atunaisa getting doubles.

The Rams have moved to first place on the competition ladder, after a 20-10 victory over the Bulldogs at Phillip in Round 15. They led 14-0 at half time, after Sean Maloney put on a show. The five eighth scored one try himself and set up another with a perfect kick. Fellow half Jesse Taws also got in on the action, scoring a four pointer just before the break.

Bulldogs winger Steven Cummins scored in the corner three minutes into the second half. The home team went further into the lead after Rams fullback Lachlan Eveston scored at the 60 minute mark. And while the Bulldogs hit back just a couple of minutes later, when hooker Jason Gray darted over from dummy half, that was the end of the scoring.

The Rams have only two matches left in the regular season, having the bye in the final round. So they are in a very good position. No team has now won more games than the Rams this year. That is remarkable, given they won just two matches in 2021. They don't win games by big margins, but they have been doing enough to win.

This is a "must win" for the Sharks, and they have been racking up some big scores recently. I certainly don't count them out in this match up. Since the mid season arrival of Zac Patch and Jake Hawkins, they have been transformed. But it is hard to tip against the Rams, given their win rate and their better defensive record.

Season record: Sharks 7 and 7 (5th, -35)
Rams 10 and 4 (1st, +48)
Form: Sharks LWLWW
Rams WWLWW
Attacking record: Sharks 26, Rams 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 29, Rams 21 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 7 Rams 28 defeated Sharks 18 at Phillip Oval

Goulburn Bulldogs V Queanbeyan Blues

The Bulldogs' defeat at the hands of the Rams in the last round left them six competition points adrift of the fourth placed team, the Blues. And the Queanbeyan outfit is their opponent in Round 16. The Dogs face another top four team, the Bushrangers, in their final three matches. Meanwhile, the Blues face the last placed Magpies in Round 17 and the Warriors in the final round. So if there is a mathematical chance left for the Bulldogs, it is fairly remote. Two losses in a row will be a worry for Blues player coach Terry Campese. But I'll tip them to bounce back at Goulburn.

Season record: Bulldogs 6 and 7 (6th, +14)
Blues 9 and 4 (4th, +177)
Form: Bulldogs LWLWL
Blues WWWLL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 25, Blues 37 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 24, Blues 23 points conceded per match

Woden Valley Rams fight off Sharks comeback for an important win on the road

The Woden Valley Rams have continued their red-hot form, coming away with an important 36-22 victory over the Belconnen United Sharks on Saturday afternoon.

Rams halfback Jesse Taws was instrumental in his sides' victory, which sees them remain atop the premiership ladder. This unfortunately puts an end to the Sharks finals hopes with only two weeks remaining in the competition.

Woden Valley Rams enjoy benefits of mid-season holiday to beat Belconnen United Sharks

A mid-season holiday is paying off for James Desaxe and the Rams. Desaxe scored a double and switched seamlessly from lock to five-eighth to help the Rams ease past the Sharks 36-22 at Bruce on Saturday.

"There were a few that impressed me today. I thought Jimmy Desaxe, our 13, he had to go into six - we lost Sean Maloney with a hamstring," coach Billy Thomson said.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 17 Preview

Image

The top four teams have been settled in the 2022 Canberra Raiders Cup, with the Rams, Warriors, Bushrangers and Blues to play finals football in September. The Woden Valley Rams hold first place, but all of the other contenders have a game in hand. The Rams have a bye in the final round - and in the Canberra Raiders Cup, a bye does not come with two competition points.

After the deduction of three competition points from the Queanbeyan Blues on Friday - a sanction for a breach of the salary cap - they cannot be minor premiers. They will still play in the finals, but if they're to win the Grand Final they'll likely need to do that from the minor semi final.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Goulburn Bulldogs

The fourth placed Bushrangers come into this match fresh off the bye. They are on a three game winning streak, having recently beaten two top four teams, the Warriors (26-12) and the Rams (30-16). So they should have plenty of confidence - especially in their defence. They're the No. 1 team in that department.

Any faint hopes the Bulldogs might have had of making the finals were extinguished last weekend. They lost to the Blues, 27-22, despite making a big comeback. The Blues scored five tries in the first half and led 26-0 at the break. The Bulldogs scored the next 22 points, before the Blues half Charlie Woolford kicked a field goal to lock it down, just before full time.

The Bulldogs will no doubt want to finish their season on a good note - and will be keen to knock off the Bushies at Greenway on Saturday. But all the numbers indicate that this should be a win for Tuggeranong at home.

Season record: Bushrangers 9 and 4, 1 draw (3rd, +127)
Bulldogs 6 and 8 (6th, +9)
Form: Bushrangers LLWWW
Bulldogs WLWLL
Attacking record: Bushrangers 26, Bulldogs 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 18, Bulldogs 24 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 8 Bushrangers 24 defeated Bulldogs 12 at Goulburn Arena

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V West Belconnen Warriors

The Kangaroos beat the Bulls, 30-26, last weekend at Freebody Oval. That's a closer result than most would have expected. The Roos led 20-10 at half time, with Sam Williams producing two try assists for his team. But one Williams kick was charged down by Bulls second rower Lucas Thomson just before the break - and Thomson regathered and raced away to score his team's second try of the match.

A four pointer for Kangaroos second rower Jesse Dent extended the home team's lead to 26-10, eight minutes into the second half. Near the 60 minute mark, Reece Robinson failed to defuse a bomb near the Roos' own goal line - and Gungahlin winger Kieran Reilly charged through to regather and score. In the 68th minute, Kangaroos hooker Lachlan Ingram got his second try of the afternoon, feigning to go right, but then running back inside. That saw the Roos go to a 30-16 lead.

But the Bulls were not finished. Reilly bagged his double, scoring in the corner in the 72nd minute. Then three minutes later, Todd Sherd kicked ahead into the in goal, diving on the ball under the posts. Final margin: four points.

After back to back losses to the Bushrangers and the Rams, the Warriors bounced back at Kippax last Saturday. Half Bobby Roberts returned, and they produced a 34-14 win over the last placed Magpies, scoring a total of six tries. Centre Ryley Thomas got himself a double inside the last five minutes of the match. If the second placed Warriors are to take the minor premiership, their visit to Freebody this week is probably a must win. I'll tip a win for the Warriors, but Sam Williams makes the Roos a more dangerous opponent.

Season record: Kangaroos 6 and 8 (7th, -100)
Warriors 10 and 3, 1 draw (2nd, +75)
Form: Kangaroos WLWLW
Warriors WWLLW
Attacking record: Kangaroos 21, Warriors 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 28, Warriors 21 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 8 Warriors 16 defeated Kangaroos 10 at Kippax

Yass Magpies V Queanbeyan Blues

The Yass Magpies sit in last place on the ladder, having won just two games all season. They broke a nine game losing streak in Round 15, upsetting the Kangaroos (22-18) at Walker Park. But they were beaten last weekend by the Warriors by 20 points. They now host the third placed Queanbeyan Blues in Round 17.

Queanbeyan player coach, Terry Campese, is probably a bit worried about his team's recent outings. The Blues are clearly the No. 1 attacking team in the competition. But they've produced recent losses to the Kangaroos (36-22) and Sharks (44-34). And while they were on fire in the first half last weekend against the Bulldogs - with fullback Matt Parsons and winger Ropata Doherty running riot - the second half was not so good. They ended up winning by just five points, after leading 26-0 at half time.

In any case, it is difficult to see anything but a big win to the Blues in this one, even though it will be played at Yass. If the Blues don't win, the alarm bells will really be ringing.

Season record: Magpies 2 and 12 (9th, -210)
Blues 10 and 4 (4th, +182)
Form: Magpies LLLWL
Blues WWLLW
Attacking record: Magpies 16, Blues 36 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 31, Blues 23 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 8 Blues 62 defeated Magpies 18 at Seiffert Oval

Gungahlin Bulls V Woden Valley Rams

The Woden Valley Rams produced a strong performance last Saturday against the Sharks at Bruce, winning 36-22. The Belconnen outfit had their finals hopes at stake, but the Rams snuffed those out. Woden led 20-4 at half time, with lock James Desaxe producing two tries. The second, just before the break, was a stunner. He ran like a winger, for 75 metres, to score. Desaxe very ably took over at five eighth from Sean Maloney in the second half. Rams halfback Jesse Taws was also terrific, setting up a try for Aiden Kawiri in the 22nd minute.

The Rams went further in front, four minutes into the second half, when centre Michael Geiger burrowed through the Sharks' goal line defence. Belconnen soon hit back with two tries in the space of five minutes - to halfback Zac Patch and winger Regan Carr. That saw the home team trail by 10 points at the 55 minute mark. But despite the fact that Rams centre Gideon Afemui was sin binned in the 59th minute, Woden finished more strongly. The visitors proceeded to wrap up the game with two tries to winger Nicholas Baldwin. Regan Carr ended with a double, after crossing in the 72nd minute.

The Rams now travel to Gungahlin for a clash with the Bulls. The Bulls broke a seven game losing streak when they defeated the Magpies in Round 12. But since then, they've lost three in a row - to the Blues (50-24), Sharks (44-28) and Kangaroos (30-26). Having won just twice all year, the 2021 minor premiers are only ahead of the last placed Magpies due to points differential. If the Rams don't win this one, it will be one of the upsets of the season. Woden should be a fairly safe bet.

Season record: Bulls 2 and 12 (8th, -96)
Rams 10 and 4 (1st, +62)
Form: Bulls LWLLL
Rams WLWWW
Attacking record: Bulls 22, Rams 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 28, Rams 21 points conceded per match

Canberra Region Rugby League deducts three competition points from Queanbeyan Blues for salary cap breaches

The Canberra Region Rugby League (CRRL) has today issued a sanction to the Queanbeyan Blues RLFC after failing to comply with aspects of salary cap requirements for the 2022 season.

The proposed sanction will remove three competition points from the Queanbeyan Blues Canberra Raiders Cup First Grade club effective immediately.

The CRRL salary cap has a combination of financial and regulatory requirements which the independent CRRL Salary Cap Integrity Officer regularly monitors on behalf of the CRRL committee.

The Queanbeyan Blues RLFC have been made aware of the sanction and are working with the CRRL and the Salary Cap Integrity Officer to amend the salary cap breach before the Canberra Raiders Cup finals series.

CRRL General Manager Mark Vergano commented:

“Whilst it is disappointing to have this breach occur, there are a number of positives to come from it. The Queanbeyan Blues are working co-operatively with the Salary Cap Integrity Officer in rectifying the issues and strengthening their processes going forward.

Eight of the nine clubs involved have complied with the system and the salary cap has allowed the clubs to control costs in rebounding from the challenges of the pandemic.

The Salary Cap process will continue to evolve and with the player points system ensure sustainability for CRRL clubs," Vergano said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Woden Valley Rams utility James Desaxe ignites side's premiership campaign

After time with the Storm and the Knights, James Desaxe couldn't break into the NRL. But now he's helping to spearhead the premiership charge for the ladder leading Rams. A fireman in Moruya, he spends four days working down the coast and dedicates three days on playing in Canberra. He signed three games into the season, played reserves and had a pre-arranged mid-season holiday. And last week he was the Rams' man of the match.

Today's results see the Bushrangers move into second place on the ladder, on points differential, with the Warriors falling to third. If the Woden Valley Rams can beat the Gungahlin Bulls tomorrow, the Rams will secure the minor premiership.

In the final round of the regular season, the Bushrangers face the Bulls and are in the box seat to take a top two spot. The Warriors face the Blues, and those two teams seem likely to finish in third or fourth, so would then face each other again in the minor semi final.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Tuggeranong Bushrangers thrash Goulburn Bulldogs and become big premiership threat

Tuggeranong may have just played themselves into competition favouritism or at least that's what the Goulburn coach thinks after going down to them, 62-10, on Saturday.

"They're a really good team, the Bushies. I honestly think they're going to win the premiership," Goulburn assistant coach Adam Mclaurie said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Gungahlin Bulls deny Woden Valley Rams minor premiership in upset win

The Gungahlin Bulls pulled off an impressive Round 17 upset in the Canberra Raiders Cup to deny the Woden Valley Rams the minor premiership.

With a bye to end their regular season next weekend, the top of the table Rams said goodbye to any hopes of claiming the honour, as the Tuggeranong Bushrangers and West Belconnen Warriors now sit in the box seat.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 18 Preview

Image

This is the last round of the regular season in the 2022 Canberra Raiders Cup and the race to the minor premiership is wide open. The Woden Valley Rams sit on top of the competition ladder - but have the bye this weekend. And in the Canberra Raiders Cup, there are no points for the bye.

Both the second placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers and third placed West Belconnen Warriors are one competition point behind the Rams. So this weekend's games will be crucial - not only in determining the minor premiership, but which teams lock in a top two spot and a second bite at the cherry in the finals.

Gungahlin Bulls V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Bulls produced a big upset against the ladder leading Rams last weekend - probably costing the Woden outfit the minor premiership. This week they have the chance at spoiling the party for the Bushrangers. Gungahlin scored four tries in the first half against the Rams, with five eighth Tre Holten Williams helping to create plenty of opportunity. They took a 24-6 lead to the break and then refused to give up control of the game in the second half. They ran out 28-12 winners.

Minor premiers last year, Gungahlin has now avoided this year's wooden spoon. But the Bulls have only won three games in 2022 - and it is difficult to see them upsetting Tuggeranong in this clash.

For a start, there is too much on the line for Tuggeranong. The Bushies are in second place on the ladder, level with the Warriors on competition points - but ahead on points differential. And because their advantage on points difference is so large, all Tuggeranong has to do is win this game and they will lock up first place. If they lose, that leaves the way open for the Warriors to jump into top spot.

In addition, Tuggeranong is now back in form. They're on a four game winning streak, having beaten both the Rams (30-16) and the Warriors (26-12) in recent weeks. They produced a huge, 62-10, win over the Bulldogs at Greenway last Saturday. They scored a total of 11 tries, eight in the first half. Returning from injury, Damien Hayden got a double, as did winger Jayden Pollard and centre Brigham Moeakiola.

"They're a really good team, the Bushies. I honestly think they're going to win the premiership," Goulburn assistant coach Adam McLaurie told The Canberra Times after the game. "They're at least my tip to win the comp because they bring some really good energy and they're just tough to beat."

Season record: Bulls 3 and 12 (8th, -80)
Bushrangers 10 and 4, 1 draw (2nd, +179)
Form: Bulls WLLLW
Bushrangers LWWWW
Attacking record: Bulls 22, Bushrangers 31 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 27, Bushrangers 17 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 9 Bushrangers 18 defeated Bulls 16 at Greenway

Belconnen United Sharks V Yass Magpies

A clash between fifth and ninth, this match has no bearing on the final order of the top four - but both teams will no doubt be wanting to finish their season on a good note. The Sharks have really lifted this season, particularly after the mid season arrival of player-coaches Zac Patch and Jake Hawkins from the Mackay Cutters. They'll have a good base to work from next season. Sadly, it looks like the Magpies will finish in last place, having won just twice this season. The form lines and numbers indicate a Sharks win at home in this one.

Season record: Sharks 7 and 8 (5th, -49)
Magpies 2 and 13 (9th, -230)
Form: Sharks WLWWL
Magpies LLWLL
Attacking record: Sharks 26, Magpies 15 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 29, Magpies 31 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 9 Sharks 32 defeated Magpies 8 at Walker Park

Queanbeyan Blues V West Belconnen Warriors

Third versus fourth. This shapes as the match of the round.

The Blues were ruled out of contention for the minor premiership last Friday, after the CRRL deducted three competition points from the Queanbeyan outfit for salary cap breaches. In one way, they are probably breathing a sigh of relief, with The Canberra Times reporting that the CRRL had been considering a deduction of six points. But cooperation with the league to ensure they become compliant with the cap will see them playing finals footy.

The Warriors are still in the race for a top two finish - and can even finish in first place on the ladder if the Bushrangers lose to the Bulls. But in either case, the Warriors need to win this match at the home of the Blues, Seiffert Oval.

Both of these teams have had some recent slip ups.

The Blues have recently lost to the Kangaroos (36-22) and Sharks (44-34). But they are coming off back to back wins over the Bulldogs (27-22) and Magpies (34-14).

The Warriors have suffered recent losses to the Rams (22-12) and Bushrangers (26-12). And then last Saturday, they were upset by the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 22-20, at Freebody Oval. The Warriors scored five tries to four, but halfback Bobby Roberts was unable to convert any of them. Warriors player-coach Ryan McQueen scored a try with just five minutes remaining - giving the visitors a shot at drawing level. But the missed conversion saw the Kangaroos hold on for the two point victory.

This is a match that could go either way - and it will crucially depend on the final team line ups. Regardless, both teams will be desperate for the win and it should be a great contest.

Season record: Blues 11 and 4 (4th, +202)
Warriors 10 and 4, 1 draw (3rd, +73)
Form: Blues WLLWW
Warriors WLLWL
Attacking record: Blues 36, Warriors 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 22, Warriors 21 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 9 Blues 46 defeated Warriors 18 at Kippax

Goulburn Bulldogs V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

This is the final match of the season for both of these teams.

The Bulldogs started the year strongly, with big wins in the first three rounds. But they struggled for consistency after that, with injuries causing disruptions. They suffered their biggest loss of the season at the hands of the Bushrangers last weekend.

In contrast, the Kangaroos had a horror opening month - and they won just twice in the first half of the season. But things improved from there, particularly with the arrival of former Raiders half, Sam Williams. In the second half of the year, they've beaten four of the top five teams - the Bushrangers (27-18), Sharks (31-24), Blues (36-22) and, last weekend, the Warriors (22-20). If Sam Williams isn't coaching somewhere next year, the Roos would no doubt love to retain him.

I'll go with the Roos to win on the road in this match.

Season record: Bulldogs 6 and 9 (7th, -43)
Kangaroos 7 and 8 (6th, -98)
Form: Bulldogs LWLLL
Kangaroos LWLWW
Attacking record: Bulldogs 24, Kangaroos 21 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 27, Kangaroos 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 9 Bulldogs 38 defeated Kangaroos 18 at Freebody Oval
