Yeah probably the best of the 3 games today. The PNG 6 has done a great job on Kikau. Some very good players to be making plays at I’d suggest

55th min TRY FIJI to fullback to Sunia Turuva, chasing the kick from Taane Milne. Nautu'a Masima fails to get the easy conversion. This is a very exciting game.

Turuva has been outstanding. Neither CNK or Savage have produced a game like this and this kid apparently can’t get a game at Penrith. He’s playing NSW cup. Get him in green.

13 mins to go TRY PAPUA NEW GUINEA to David Mead in his final game for the Kumuls. What a great try this was, Lachlan Lam makes the break and Mead is backing up. Kyle Laybutt converts.

75th min TRY PAPUA NEW GUINEA to Lachlan Lam, chases the Justin Olam kick back inside. Kyle Laybutt gets the goal. Fantastic performance from the Kumuls! It's been a very good game.

Yeah he's been great. More solid than Savage and can tackle as well.

Semi showing why he's not a FG footballer. Let's Olam get on the outside of him easily (due to his lack of pace) and Lachlan Lam tore him to shreds on the try. He still hasn't improved his defence and doesn't make up for it in attack. Hardly sighted tonight against largely NSW/QLD Cup players except Olam and Johnston

PNG and Fiji play even better than us with their handling and high completion rates.

Great win from PNG.
Number of top flight players really under performed but a hell of a lot of players from the lower grades stepped up in this one.
Big lesson for all sides this weekend to be picking genuine playmakers at 6/7.

Kikau wasn’t cruising tonight he had a real dig, but was totally shut down by some PNG nobody’s turning out for Townsville. A brilliant effort. The Fiji FB was unreal. The PNG 6 and Lam in 7 were the difference. Really good game!

I don't mind Lam as a back up half / 14 / someone that could challenge Fog. I think he's a better player at this stage than Schneider from what I've seen, although that comment will sting most people on this site.

Half with an extra 3 years proper development looks better than half with mostly covid disrupted development? Don't know why that would shock anyone.

It’s been explained to me on here a few times that we have a cap that must be spent and there just aren’t enough good players out there so we end up having to load up big contracts for our old club stalwarts. The games last night convinced me the good players are out there if we look hard enough. Joey Manu is an elite 1 and deserves a lot more that what roosters are paying him as a centre. Lam is another good option, the PNG 6 was great, the Fijian fullback great. Players are out there if we look hard enough and ensure we free up the cash to have a serious crack at them.

The odds on offer for PNG were hilarious. They had specialists across the park. And 2 NRL experienced genuine halves. Fiji had a heap of bog average wingers out of position.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

These players aren't like hidden secrets though. Kyle Laybutt has been in and around the Cowboys system for like 6 years and just never broke through despite ordinary players in front of him.

Last night him and Lam played against a team with Taane Milne at lock and Kevin Naiqama at 6. Of course they looked good.

You getter a better read from reserve grade imo.

In my opinion, loading up and extending veterans to meet your cap requirements year to year (95%) is the exact dumbest way to do it. We are carrying 2 overloaded, declining players for multiple years now.

I'd argue the smarter way to do it -in years there is no great talent identified to bring in- is to always bring in a new player or two on slightly overs deals, 1 year + 2nd year CO. One who is not even essential to the roster/play style. That way if they hit a vein of form, club can keep them and no need to upgrade, they are already on decent money.

And in the normal run of events you can cut them at the end of the year with no angst, they were lucky to get that $$ to begin with and you have the money instantly freed to go after the players you want. No emotion.

Loading it up onto veterans saddles you with not only money tied up for years you can never access, but comes along with all the team/player angst of putting everyone in awkward positions about (previously) integral players/fan favourites.

Couldn’t agree more - would rather see us take a swing and a miss by loading up on the next big thing that never eventuates than paying overs for someone you have already extracted the best years from. Eventually you will snag a winner or two if you take enough smart punts.

How has the Fijian full back been going on reserves? They said he was going well in commentary. I’d be surprised if he isn’t playing first grade by season end. Apart from the skills in attack and defence he looked really composed and was organising with great confidence for a kid on debut.

I can't recall anyone ever saying that. Clubs certainly have to spend 95 per cent of the cap... and that rule, in my view, hinders clubs at the bottom of the ladder, with substandard rosters. It should be loosened up considerably, so that clubs in that situation can genuinely build a "war chest" to recruit big name players.

I don’t think it hinders bottom clubs, only the foolish bottom clubs. The top clubs will generally have good players, most the cap will be tied up paying them what they are worth and they have limited scope to make big plays at future prospects. A smart bottom club will realise their roster is a major contributing factor to why they are a bottom team and will cut loose the plodders and throw cash at generation next.

Joey Manu has had many opportunities to jump to another club and play fullback and 5/8th

He’s knocked them all back. He’s not coming to Canberra

That view is inconsistent with the reality of the past decade or more of the NRL.

In 2007 the Panthers were wooden spooners. I’d say they weren’t a foolish bottom club and recruited very very well. They aren’t still paying James Tamou or Jimmy Maloney on loyalty deals. They have circled through young kids until they got the winning combo.
