Queanbeyan Blues withstand late fight back to seal victory

The Queanbeyan Blues have bounced back from their round one disappointment defeating the Bushrangers 32-20 at Seiffert Oval on Saturday afternoon. Captain-coach Terry Campese wound back the clock in his side’s 12-point victory putting on a spectacular performance which included two try assists and match clinching try in the 78th minute.

Man of the match Matthew Parsons set up Terry Campese to seal Queanbeyan's first win of the season with a try in the final two minutes against Tuggeranong on Saturday. Parsons was on fire at Seiffert Oval, with his leap for a Campese bomb helping the veteran five-eighth score under the uprights.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 3 Preview

Image

Following a break for Easter, the Canberra Raiders Cup gets back underway this weekend. The action is headlined by the clash that most expected to see in last year's Grand Final - between the Gungahlin Bulls and Queanbeyan Blues. The round also features two local derbies - the Rams and Bushrangers in the southern derby and the Warriors and Shark in the Belconnen derby.

Woden Valley Rams V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Woden Valley Rams have been something of a surprise packet in the opening two rounds. They got an upset 16-6 win over the Blues in the season opener at home - and followed that up with a big, 40-22, victory over the Yass Magpies in Round 2 at Walker Park. The Rams led 22-6 at half time, but tries to second rower Benjamin Davis and fullback Kai Douven brought the Magpies right back into the game. Yass trailed by only four points at the 60 minute mark, but the Rams ran in three tries in the final 15 minutes. In the 65th minute, Woden fullback Nicholas Baldwin scored out on the wing. Second rower Sean Maloney added to the try tally five minutes later. Then, four tackles into the next set, Thomas Scrivener made a big break down the middle of the field, scoring under the posts. A second try to Davis close to full time was a consolation only for the Magpies.

In Round 3, the Rams host the "southern derby" when they take on the Tuggeranong Bushrangers. The Bushies had a first up, 40-6, win against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, but couldn't back that up against the Blues at Seiffert in Round 2. So they are coming off a 32-20 defeat. The Bushrangers are certainly capable of getting a win in this match, but the Rams have the better form - and the home ground advantage. I'll tip the home team.

Team news: For the Rams, Thomas Scrivener takes over the No. 1 jersey, with Nicholas Baldwin switching to the wing. Michael Geiger is back at centre, partnering Gideon Afemui. Jackson McDonald will be starting halfback, while Kosta Posantizis comes in at dummy half, in place of Thomas Hicks. Joel Ambrose will start at lock. Bushrangers coach Jason Kelly will start Damien Hayden at fullback in place of Bailey Rogers. The experienced Michael Brophy comes back into the team at halfback. After a week in the Raiders' NSW Cup team, Zac Saddler is back with the Bushrangers at prop.

Season record: Rams 2 and 0 (2nd, +28)
Bushrangers 1 and 1 (3rd, +22)
Form: Rams DLWWW
Bushrangers WLLWL
Attacking record: Rams 28 points, Bushrangers 30 scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 14 points, Bushrangers 19 conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 15 Rams 28 defeated Bushrangers 22 at Greenway Oval

Gungahlin Bulls V Queanbeyan Blues

The Queanbeyan Blues returned home in Round 2 and got their first win of the season, defeating the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, 32-20. The Blues led 16-10, with most of the points the result of barge-overs from dummy half. One highlight was an angled run from new Bushrangers recruit Zac Saddler in the 25th minute, which saw him pierce through the defensive line and score under the posts. It is probably one thing which earned him a call up to the Raiders' NSW Cup side last weekend. But the best was held for the last minute of the first half, when Blues five eighth Terry Campese produced a brilliant cross field kick that was gathered in on the full by winger George Morseau. He ran 20 metres to score under the posts.

Ten minutes into the second half, Terry Campese was back at it, throwing a looping cut out pass to Morseu for another four points. A barge over try from Atunaisa Tupou gave Queanbeyan a 26-10 lead. But the Bushrangers were not finished. In the 63rd minute, a dropped ball gifted a try to Tuggeranong hooker Liam Oakley. And then with 10 minutes remaining, the Bushies spun the ball from one side of the field to the other. Centre Karlos Filiga was the beneficiary, who scored out wide. That narrowed the gap to just six points. Enter Terry Campese. Two minutes from full time he put up a kick to the Bushrangers' goal line - and Blues winger Matt Parsons was there, to regather and put the ball out the back for Campese and the winning try.

In Round 3, the Blues head to Gungahlin for a clash with the Bulls. Last year, as the season headed to its conclusion, the Bulls and Blues were streets ahead of the rest on the competition ladder. The Bulls were one premiership point ahead of the Blues after Round 15. Just when the two teams were about to face off in a "Grand Final preview", the pandemic forced the cancellation of the season. However, 2022 is a new year, and, with some changes in personnel, both of these teams still seem to be finding their way. The Bulls lost to the Warriors in Round 1, with West Belconnen staging a huge comeback to win 33-30 at the death. Then in Round 2, the Bulls went to Goulburn and suffered a 48-16 defeat. Given the form lines, I'm going to go with the Blues to win "on the road".

Team news: Former Bulls fullback Tristan Eldridge has been named on the wing for the Blues this week, with Matt Parsons taking back Queanbeyan's No. 1 jersey. Hooker Josh Mitchell will play his first game this year for the Blues, after a stint in NSW Cup with the Raiders. He replaces Charlie Woolford, who drops to the bench. For the Bulls, Isaac Walker - who was named at centre in Round 2 - will have the more familiar No. 7 on his back, with Richard Allan at centre. Sateki Fetuani replaces Matthew Richards at hooker, while Lucas Thomson returns in the second row.

Season record: Bulls 0 and 2 (8th, -35)
Blues 0 and 1 (5th, +2)
Form: Bulls DWWLL
Blues WWWLW
Attacking record: Bulls 23, Blues 19 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 41, Blues 23 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 6 Bulls 40 defeated Blues 20 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Goulburn Bulldogs V Yass Magpies

The Goulburn Bulldogs lead the competition, with two impressive wins in the opening rounds. They shot out of the gates early against the Bulls in Round 2 - going to a 16 point lead after 15 minutes, courtesy of tries to prop Isaac Lanham and centres Dillon Rota and Max Flack. They didn't really look back after that. The Dogs led 26-6 at half time and went on to score a total of nine tries. Max Flack got a hat trick, while Dillon Rota and lock Angus Marshall scored doubles. The Yass Magpies travel up the Hume Highway on Sunday. With two good wins to their name in 2022 and the home ground advantage, it's impossible to go past the Bulldogs in this one.

Team news: Goal kicker Christopher Hart has been named at centre for the Bulldogs, with Max Flack shifting back to the wing. Thomas Croker has been included at five eighth, partnering Joshua Latham in the halves. Coach Tyson Greenwood will take over at starting prop, with Jacob Waters coming into the second row. For the Magpies, five eighth Dylan Perceval will join Josh Fattore in the halves. Benjamin Davis and Kyle Danilczak will shift up front, taking the starting prop roles.

Season record: Bulldogs 2 and 0 (1st, +56)
Magpies 0 and 1 (7th, -18)
Form: Bulldogs DLLWW
Magpies LLWLL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 43, Magpies 22 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 15, Magpies 40 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 8 Bulldogs 34 defeated Magpies 18 at Walker Park

West Belconnen Warriors V Belconnen United Sharks

The Belconnen United Sharks got their first win of the season prior to Easter, beating the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 26-10 at the old Raiders HQ at Bruce. Matthew Woolnough was strong for the Sharks, setting up the first try of the game with a kick for David Williams. He then scored the third United try himself, running wide. That saw the Sharks take a 14-0 lead to the break. Early in the second half, another Woolnough grubber set up a four pointer for fullback Darcy Leadbitter. A try and two assists wasn't a bad haul for the five eighth.

The West Belconnen Warriors produced a thrilling comeback win against the Bulls in the season opener, but had a bye in Round 2. They now host the Sharks in the Belconnen derby in Round 3 in a Sunday twilight match. This is a tough game to tip, given the limited form lines, but I'll stick with the home team.

Team news: Warriors co-coach Ryan McQueen turns back the clock and will appear for the first time this year - at fullback. Brandon Withers moves to the wing, while former Yass Magpies player Willie Peace will line up at centre. Manu Vanisi will start at prop. Co-coach Tim Sloman is not named in the top 17. Sharks coach Scott Logan has largely stuck with a winning team.

Season record: Warriors 1 and 0 (4th, +3)
Sharks 1 and 1 (6th, -8)
Form: Warriors WLWLW
Sharks WLLLW
Attacking record: Warriors 33, Sharks 20 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 30, Sharks 24 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 9 Warriors 24 defeated Sharks 18 at Raiders Belconnen

Bobby Roberts fired up for West Belconnen Warriors return

Bobby Roberts has always dreamed of becoming a firefighter. It's why he couldn't commit to football last year. And it's why he'll put work first if they come calling. But nonetheless Roberts is back in a West Belconnen Warriors jersey.

"The dream had always been to be a firey ... when the club hit me up to play again this year I told them work's my main priority and they're happy to work around that," Roberts said.

Woden Valley Rams can't do it for club legend Peter Cox as Tuggeranong Bushrangers claim big win

The Rams went down 36-6 to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Phillip on Saturday, with a ceremony to celebrate "Coxy's" life held before the Canberra Raiders Cup game.

"Massive day. There's no disappointment in the loss because Pete's seen plenty of them here," Rams coach Billy Thomson said with a wry laugh. "But the effort's there and we tried to play. We didn't get the result we wanted, but it was honourable to have the crowd that we had here and the respect for Pete was very nice.

Goulburn Bulldogs make it three from three, but lose winger Max Flack to season-ending injury against Yass Magpies

Goulburn Bulldogs continued their Canberra Raiders Cup reign with a 36-6 victory in 60 minutes, but a season-ending injury for winger Max Flack (dislocated, broken ankle) overshadowed the result. The referees called the game as the Bulldogs player was left in-situ on the field waiting for an ambulance.

"It was a bit of a bit of a shake-up for the team but he's a good kid, he will move forward from that. He will bounce back and he'll be twice the bloke," Goulburn captain-coach Tyson Greenwood said.

West Belconnen Warriors 52 (Tries: Withers, Thomas 2, Peace 3, Launders, Graham, Brown; Goals: Roberts 8) defeated Belconnen United Sharks 6 (Tries: Aroha-Tuinauvai; Goals: Beagley)

Goulburn Bulldogs 36 (Tries: Stephens, Cummins, Flack, Latham, Leapai 2, Marshall; Goals: Hart 3, Flack) defeated Yass Magpies 6 (Tries: Smith; Goals: Fattore)

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 4 Preview

Image

The top four clash between the Goulburn Bulldogs and West Belconnen Warriors shapes as the match of the round this Saturday in the Canberra Raiders Cup. The free live stream match comes from Walker Park, where the Yass Magpies host the Gungahlin Bulls.

Yass Magpies V Gungahlin Bulls

The Yass Magpies suffered a 36-6 loss at Goulburn last weekend against the Bulldogs. The Magpies' only try came in the 57th minute of the match, when bench player Jason Davis went on a good run to the line. Unfortunately, the match was called off at that point, as Bulldogs winger Max Flack severely dislocated and broke his ankle in an attempted tackle. It left his foot pointing in a direction that feet should not point. Yass were repeatedly beaten on their left edge by the Bulldogs - and that has left the Magpies winless after their opening two matches.

The Gungahlin Bulls shocked the Queanbeyan Blues last Saturday, defeating the visitors 44-16. The Bulls had lost their opening two games and the Blues were clear favourites. The Queanbeyan outfit led 10-6 at the 20 minute mark, but it was almost all the Bulls from there. Gungahlin ran in four straight tries to lead 30-10 at half time. And while the Blues were first to score in the second half, when Josh MItchell put Bradley Terry over the line, the Bulls went on with the job. The Bulls scored eight tries in all, with centre Richard Allan and bench player Keith Walsh both getting doubles. Five eighth Tre Holten-Williams pulled the strings for Gungahlin, as he so often does. While the Magpies will be at home in Saturday's clash, the Bulls should be able to notch up back to back wins in this one.

Team news: Calab Edwards has been playing with the Raiders' SG Ball team in the halves, but now the junior representatives season is over, he's back with the Bulls at fullback. He replaces Kane Allan. Keith Walsh comes in at centre for Gungahlin in place of Richard Allan, while Kurt Perry will start on the wing. Todd Sherd drops to the bench. For the Magpies, Bayley Maher moves to fullback, while Kai Douven shifts to centre. Liam Grame joins Josh Fattore in the halves. Ryan Prins shifts from lock to hooker, replacing Jack Hartwig.

Season record: Magpies 0 and 2 (8th, +28)
Bulls 1 and 2 (5th, -7)
Form: Magpies LWLLL
Bulls WWLLW
Attacking record: Magpies 14 points, Bulls 30 scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 38 points, Bulls 32 conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 4 Bulls 36 defeated Magpies 34 at Walker Park

West Belconnen Warriors V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Warriors and Bulldogs are the only undefeated teams after three rounds - and this clash at Kippax is very clearly the match of the round.

The Warriors broke the 50 point barrier in a 46 point defeat of the Sharks at home last Sunday evening. The Warriors led 18-0 at half time, before piling on 34 points in the second stanza. Centre Willie Peace got a hat trick in the 52-6 victory, while Peace's centre partner, Ryley Thomas posted a double. Nine tries to one sure is a decisive victory. The Bulldogs were perhaps even more dominant in their 30-6 win over the Magpies last weekend. Who knows what the score might have been, if the game hadn't been declared finished after 60 minutes - due to the season ending injury to Goulburn winger Max Flack. Star second rower Ron Leapai scored two of Goulburn's six tries.

The return of Bobby Roberts and Ryan McQueen to the Warriors - and the recruitment of Willie Peace from the Magpies - has clearly added to the strike power of the two blues. The Bulldogs have adjusted quickly to the loss of half Isaac Walker and second rower Jesse Martin to other clubs over the off season. They've had some players return, like goal kicking centre Chris Hart, while the recruitment of Leapai has added another dimension to the team's attack. Goulburn will no doubt miss the speed of Max Flack for the rest of 2022. But they still have some strike of their own. This match will tell us a lot about where these teams are headed. The difference might prove to be the defence, with the Bulldogs conceding only 12 points per game so far. I'll tip the Dogs in this one.

Team news: For the Warriors, Beau McFarlane replaces Kayne Laundess on the wing, while lock Naseri Naseri has not been named. Bulldogs winger Max Flack has been replaced by Laberato Tauoqooqo, while Jyi Little comes in at centre for Chris Hart. Bulldogs coach Tyson Greenwood moves back to the second row, with Mitchell Atkinson to start at prop. Raiders junior Jack Bishop has been included on the Goulburn bench.

Season record: Warriors 2 and 0 (3rd, +49)
Bulldogs 3 and 0 (1st, +86)
Form: Warriors LWLWW
Bulldogs LLWWW
Attacking record: Warriors 43, Bulldogs 41 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 18, Bulldogs 12 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 10 Warriors 18 defeated Bulldogs 10 at Kippax

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Belconnen United Sharks

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers bounced back last weekend, after a 12 point defeat to the Queanbeyan Blues in Round 2. They produced a 36-6 win over the Woden Valley Rams in the southern derby last Saturday. The win was not a complete surprise, but the dimensions of the win was unexpected - after the Rams had opened the season with two victories. The Bushrangers scored five unanswered tries in the second half. Winger Jayden Pollard produced a hat trick - with his third try coming as a result of an intercept after the siren. The Sharks probably had a game they'd prefer to forget last weekend - after being reduced to 12 men for the second half. They scored just one try in a 46 point defeat at the hands of the Warriors - through five eighth Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai in the 55th minute. I expect the Bushies at home will be too strong for the Sharks this Saturday.

Team news: Experienced half Michael Brophy is out for the Bushrangers. He's replaced by hooker Liam Oakley, with Joshua Eppelstun named in the No. 9 jersey. Jack Davison replaces Seketoa Wesley Tameifuna on the wing. Steven Dunn will start at prop with Daniel Hickson dropping to the bench. Jack Grant replaces Patrick Birch in the second row. For the Sharks, Raiders SG Ball players Regan Carr and Jacob Piper come into the backline, at wing and centre, respectively. Paakofi Amponn-Nyamekye has been promoted from the bench to the other wing. Zachary Singh will start at prop.

Season record: Bushrangers 2 and 1 (2nd, +52)
Sharks 1 and 2 (7th, -54)
Form: Bushrangers LLWLW
Sharks LLLWL
Attacking record: Bushrangers 32, Sharks 15 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 15, Sharks 33 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 12 Bushrangers 32 defeated Sharks 22 at Greenway

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Woden Valley Rams

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have struggled in their opening two games, scoring an average of eight points, while conceding 33. They host the Rams this weekend at Freebody Oval and will be hoping they can put a good performance together for the home fans. Woden upset the Blues in Round 1 and backed that up with a big win over Yass in Round 2. And while they were the first to cross against the Bushrangers last weekend - courtesy of a try to half Jackson McDonald in the seventh minute - Tuggeranong went on to score 36 unanswered points. The Roos are always hard to beat at Freebody - and with rain forecast for Saturday, the conditions might bring these sides closer together. I'll have to tip the team with the form on the board, however. Rams to win.

Team news: Kangaroos hooker Lachlan Ingram moves from hooker to half back, replaceing Robert Sheffield. Thomas Warner takes over at dummy half. Kaine Pagura is out, with Aiden Agnew moving from wing to fullback. Former Raider Reece Robinson returns to the Roos at centre. Jesse Dent shifts to lock, with Jonathan Ireome Mose joining Michael Cullen in the second row. Deakin Vellis and Connor Griffiths are the new wingers for the Rams, while Scott Swanson comes in for Jesse Martin in the second row.

Season record: Kangaroos 0 and 2 (9th, +50)
Rams 2 and 1 (4th, -2)
Form: Kangaroos LWWLL
Rams LWWWL
Attacking record: Kangaroos 8, Rams 21 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 33, Rams 21 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 14 Kangaroos 52 defeated Rams 20 at Freebody Oval

Canberra Raiders' NRLW team would boost Katrina Fanning Shield

Katrina Fanning Shield player Elly Hazelton says two years of pandemic has meant is was hard to recruit new players for the Goulburn Bulldogs, but she was hopeful a pathway to a new Raiders NRLW team would change that.

"I think that would be such a great thing for our region," she said. "It seems to always be country championships and stuff around here, but then as far that there's no real pathway for us girls to progress on - unless we're playing in Sydney - it's sort of hard to get recognised.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 5 Preview

Image

The top four clash between the West Belconnen Warriors and Woden Valley Rams shapes as the match of the round this Saturday in the Canberra Raiders Cup. The free live stream match is the Queanbeyan derby, with the Blues hosting the Kangaroos at Seiffert Oval.

Yass Magpies V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Yass Magpies produced an upset win over the Gungahlin Bulls last weekend - defeating last year's minor premiers, 34-16, at Walker Park. It was their first win of the year. The Bulls were the first to score in the 17th minute, with half Isaac Walker throwing a huge cut out pass to winger Earldric Pehara - who found himself in wide open spaces. The home team hit back in the 25th minute, after Yass half switched the attack to the right edge, and winger Ayden Pothan crashed over out wide. The teams went to the break with the score locked at six all.

Six minutes into the second half, the Bulls took the lead after Tre Holten-Williams sent the ball wide, with Pehara getting himself a double. In the 55th minute, a great grubber from five eighth Liam Grame could not be defused by Pehara in goal - and Grame pounced on the ball for four points. The Shaun Davis conversion gave the Magpies a 12-10 lead. But it was quickly sacrificed three minutes later, when the Magpies charged down a kick - and the ball ended in the hands of Gungahlin Bulls winger Kurt Perry - and he streaked away for a try. The Bulls led 16-12 at the 60 minute mark. But it was all the Magpies from there. Half Josh Fattore got a double, while Shaun Davis and Kyle Danilczak also crashed over for tries.

The Magpies will be hoping for another upset when they host the Tuggeranong Bushrangers on Saturday at Walker Park. A huge 52-16 win over the Belconnen United Sharks at Greenway last weekend saw the Tuggeranong Bushrangers take over the competition lead. The home team scored a total of 10 tries, with winger Jack Davison getting a hat trick, and fellow winger Jayden Pollard scoring a double. The Bushies led 26-8 at half time and were in control from the start.

The Bushrangers rank second in the competition in attack, just behind the Goulburn Bulldogs. But they clearly have the best defence, so far conceding an average of just 15 points per game. That's the sort of defensive record most NRL teams would love to have. I'll go with the numbers in this one. Bushrangers to win away from home.

Season record: Magpies 1 and 2 (7th, -32)
Bushrangers 3 and 1 (1st, +88)
Form: Magpies WLLLW
Bushrangers LWLWW
Attacking record: Magpies 20 points, Bushrangers 37 scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 31 points, Bushrangers 15 conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 14 Magpies 32 defeated Bushrangers 10 at Greenway Oval

Woden Valley Rams V West Belconnen Warriors

The Woden Valley Rams have had a good start to the 2022 season - and after the opening four rounds, they find themselves sitting in the top four. They suffered a big loss to the Bushrangers in Round 3, but bounced back last week against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freebody. The Roos led 18-12 at half time, but Woden scored four straight tries in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. Rams winger Connor Griffiths got a double. The Blues made a late comeback, with tries to winger Thomas Williams and hooker Thomas Warner in the last 10 minutes, but by then it was too late.

This week, the Rams host the West Belconnen Warriors - the only undefeated team left in the 2022 Cup. The Warriors knocked off the Goulburn Bulldogs in Round 4 at Kippax. The Warriors led 24-10 at half time, with Bulldogs second rower Ron Leapai chasing a grubber after the hooter to score and keep Goulburn in touch. A try to bench prop Kirren Roughley in the 51st minute saw the home team go to a 30-10 lead. But then two quick tries to the Bulldogs saw them draw within 10 points at the 60 minute mark.

In the 67th minute, a cross field kick from West Belconnen half Bobby Roberts came up trumps, with centre Ryley Thomas chasing. The Thomas try saw the Warriors take a 16 point lead. But the Bulldogs were not done. Goulburn five eighth Thomas Croker crossed in the 72nd minute, while prop Mitchell Atkinson bumped and swiveled his way over for a try three minutes later. That closed the gap to just six points. But with a minute or so left, Bobby Roberts sealed it for the Warriors with a 30 metre field goal. The return of Roberts and fullback Ryan McQueen - who ended with a double - has really added something to the Warriors this year. While they'll be playing away this week, I think they might be too strong for the Rams.

Season record: Rams 3 and 1 (4th, +4)
Warriors 3 and 0 (3rd, +56)
Form: Rams WWWLW
Warriors WLWWW
Attacking record: Rams 24, Warriors 41 scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 23, Warriors 22 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 4 Warriors 30 defeated Rams 12 at Kippax

Queanbeyan Blues V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Queanbeyan derby is a traditional blockbuster, between two traditional powerhouse teams. But in 2022, the Blues have won just one game so far, while the Kangaroos are winless. The Blues beat the current competition leaders, the Bushrangers, in Round 2. But they were upset by the Rams in their season opener and spanked by the Bulls in Round 3 - losing 44-16 at Gungahlin. They come into this game off the bye.

The Kangaroos lost big time to the Bushrangers in Round 1 (40-6), with the Sharks producing something of an upset the following week. The men in maroon probably came as close to a win last weekend - against the Rams - as they have all year. The Kangaroos did well in 2021 with a young halves combination - Thomas Casey and Sione Vuki - but this year they are with the Raiders' Flegg team. The Roos seem to be struggling to adjust without them.

The Kangaroos have the worst attacking record in the competition, the Blues the third worst. The defensive records are a little better, but not a lot. The Kangaroos are a chance in this one, but the Blues are in slightly better form. They also have hooker Josh Mitchell back, after he spent some time playing with the Raiders in NSW Cup. I'll tip the Blues at home.

Season record: Blues 1 and 2 (6th, -26)
Kangaroos 0 and 3 (9th, -56)
Form: Blues WWLWL
Kangaroos WWLLL
Attacking record: Blues 18, Kangaroos 15 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 27, Kangaroos 33 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 12 Blues 44 defeated Kangaroos 12 at Freebody Oval

Belconnen United Sharks V Gungahlin Bulls

This is another match up between two last start losers. The Sharks suffered a big loss to the Bushies last week, while the Bulls were upset by the Magpies. The Sharks have just one win to their name - the Round 2 victory over the Kangaroos (26-10). In the last two weeks they've conceded 52 points to the Warriors and Bushrangers. They now have the worst defensive record in the league.

The Bulls were minor premiers last year, but are not quite the same team in 2022. They've been inconsistent. They've had one win (44-16), against the Blues in Round 3. They also lost by just three points to the Warriors in their season opener. But they've also lost by a big margin to the Bulldogs (48-16) - and were upset by the Magpies last week. Even though this week's clash is on the Sharks' home territory, the numbers point to a Bulls victory in this game. Gungahlin has a better attacking and defensive record.

Season record: Sharks 1 and 3 (8th, -90)
Bulls 1 and 3 (5th, -23)
Form: Sharks LLWLL
Bulls WLLWL
Attacking record: Sharks 16, Bulls 27 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 38, Bulls 32 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 15 Bulls 28 defeated Sharks 14 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Blues destroy Roos in Queanbeyan derby

Not one, but two Queanbeyan Blues hat-tricks in their 64-10 walloping of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in the derby at Seiffert Oval on Saturday. Jake Butler-Fleming and Ropata Doherty will have to fight over the match ball as they both scored three tries in a dominant display.

"I don't get over the line very often, so it was nice to score some, but it was all about the team today," Butler-Fleming said. "Our halves were great, but it was a whole team effort.

The Canberra Raiders Cup's two representative sides - the under 20s and open - both fell to the sword of the Newcastle Rebels on Saturday.

"They boys were awesome," Canberra coach Jordan Macey said."It's obviously not the result we wanted, but I thought the effort from all of them was outstanding. The forwards, overall, were outstanding. They all had a really good game and just kept showing up."

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 6 Preview

Image

Round 6 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the top of the table clash between the Tuggeranong Bushrangers and West Belconnen Warriors on Saturday at Greenway. The live stream match is the top four contest between the Goulburn Bulldogs and Woden Valley Rams.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V West Belconnen Warriors

The Bushrangers and Warriors sit on top of the competition ladder - level on competition points and split only by points differential. The first placed Bushrangers are on a three game winning streak, having recently beaten the Rams (36-6), Sharks (52-16) and Magpies (30-10). The Warriors are the only undefeated team left in the competition, having accounted for the Bulls, Sharks, Bulldogs and Rams.

The Warriors have the best attack in the league - just ahead of the the Bushies on a per game basis. Warriors halfback, Bobby Roberts, is sitting on top of the McIntyre medal count after the opening five rounds - and he's a key reason for that. However, the Bushrangers have a decided advantage in defence - having conceded an average of just 14 points per game. There's been no better defensive outfit in the competition over the opening five rounds. Most NRL teams would be happy with those sorts of numbers. This should be a cracking contest and it is tough to predict a winner. It is probably only the home ground advantage that tips this in favour of the Bushrangers. And that defence.

Season record: Bushrangers 4 and 1 (1st, +108)
Warriors 4 and 0 (2nd, +72)
Form: Bushrangers WLWWW
Warriors WBWWW
Attacking record: Bushrangers 36, Warriors 40 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 14, Warriors 22 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 8 Bushrangers 22 defeated Warriors 22 at Kippax

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Yass Magpies

The two teams at the foot of the ladder meet in this contest. The Magpies have struggled in recent years, but that is very unfamiliar territory for the Kangaroos. The Roos are coming off a 64-10 thrashing at the hands of the Blues in the Queanbeyan derby at Seiffert Oval in Round 5. They are the only team that is yet to record a win - though they came close against the Rams in Round 4. In that match, the Roos led a half time, but were defeated by six points in the end. The Magpies lost to the ladder leading Bushrangers in their last outing. Their one win has come against the Bulls, at home in Round 4. It was a decent win, too, against last year's minor premiers, 32-16.

The attacking and defensive records of these two teams indicate that the Magpies are the stronger of the two teams. But Freebody is a tough place to play for any away team - particularly on a cold winter's day. And that makes this another flip of the coin. I'll go with the home team to get a breakthrough in this one.

Season record: Kangaroos 0 and 4 (9th, -110)
Magpies 1 and 3 (8th, -52)
Form: Kangaroos LLBLL
Magpies BLLWL
Attacking record: Kangaroos 14 points, Magpies 18 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 41 points, Magpies 31 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 9 Kangaroos 46 defeated Magpies 16 at Freebody Oval

Goulburn Bulldogs V Woden Valley Rams

This is a battle between third (Bulldogs) and fourth (Rams) on the ladder. The Bulldogs opened the season with three straight victories over the Sharks, Bulls and Magpies. But they are coming off a seven point loss to the Warriors at Kippax in their last match - nearly three weeks ago. They had the bye in Round 5. The Rams also fell victim to the Warriors in their last outing - suffering a 36-20 loss at Phillip Oval. The Rams have been a bit of a surprise packet so far this year. They set the tone in the season opener, upsetting the Blues at Phillip. They've also had wins over the Magpies and Kangaroos - but both of those teams are at the bottom of the ladder. The Bulldogs to win this one at home.

Season record: Bulldogs 3 and 1 (3rd, +79)
Rams 3 and 2 (4th, -12)
Form: Bulldogs WWWLB
Rams WWLWL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 38 points, Rams 23 scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 18 points, Rams 26 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 11 Bulldogs 28 drew Rams 28 at Goulburn Arena

Belconnen United Sharks V Queanbeyan Blues

The Sharks and Blues are both last start winners. The Sharks conceded 52 points in each of their recent losses to the Warriors and Bushrangers, But they bounced back in their last match, beating the Bulls by two points at home in Round 5 (30-28).

The Blues won big time in the Queanbeyan derby two weeks ago, producing their best win of the season against cross town rivals, the Roos. Terry Campese might be close to the end of his playing days, but he certainly still knows how to steer his football team around the park. He was outstanding. I'll tip the Blues to win this match, and win well.

Season record: Sharks 2 and 3 (6th, -88)
Blues 2 and 2 (5th, +28)
Form: Sharks LWLLW
Blues LWLBW
Attacking record: Sharks 18, Blues 30 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 36, Blues 23 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 10 Blues 30 defeated Sharks 24 at NSWRL HQ Bruce

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 7 Preview

Image

Round 7 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a battle for a top four spot between the Queanbeyan Blues and Goulburn Bulldogs at Seiffert Oval. The free live stream match sees the Queanbeyan Kangaroos take on the Bulls at Gungahlin.

Yass Magpies V West Belconnen Warriors

The Yass Magpies have just one win their name so far this season, a 32-16 win over the Gungahlin Bulls at Walker Park. They come into this game against the West Belconnen Warriors having suffered back to back losses - to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers (30-10) and Queanbeyan Kangaroos (20-12).

The Warriors are the only undefeated team in the competition in 2022, but they came close to a defeat last weekend, after drawing with the ladder leading Bushrangers. The Warriors led for the entire game, up until a match levelling try from Bushrangers forward Zac Saddler in the 77th minute. Saddler had a shot at goal to take the lead, but missed the opportunity. The Warriors had led 20-0 at half time, and 26-10 with 20 minutes remaining. So it was a game that the Belconnen outfit really should have won. But didn't.

With the Bushrangers having the bye this weekend, the Warriors will want to make sure they win this game - one which the numbers suggest they should win and win well. The home ground advantage will help the Magpies, but I'll tip the Warriors to bounce back.

Season record: Magpies 1 and 4 (8th, -60)
Warriors 4 and 0, 1 draw (2nd, +72)
Form: Magpies LLWLL
Warriors WWWWD
Attacking record: Magpies 16, Warriors 37 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 28, Warriors 22 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 12 Warriors 18 defeated Magpies 16 at Kippax

Woden Valley Rams V Belconnen United Sharks

The Woden Valley Rams are coming off a 34-16 win over the Bulldogs at Goulburn. The Rams were well in control throughout, with man of the match, halfback Jesse Taws, orchestrating the play. Second rower Sean Maloney and lock Jesse Martin were also strong. The Rams led 18-6 at half time and went right on with it in the second half.

The Belconnen United Sharks had a heavy defeat last weekend, with the Blues winning 42-16 at "Shark Park". It was relatively close at half time, with the Blues leading by just four points (16-12). But the Blues opened up in the second half. The Sharks have posted wins this year over the Kangaroos (26-10) and the Bulls (30-28). But they also conceded 52 points in each of their recent losses to the Warriors and Bushrangers. Expect the Rams to be too strong at home in this one.

Season record: Rams 4 and 2 (3rd, +6)
Sharks 2 and 4 (6th, -114)
Form: Rams WLWLW
Sharks WLLWL
Attacking record: Rams 25, Sharks 18 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 24, Sharks 37 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 8 Sharks 34 defeated Rams 12 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce

Queanbeyan Blues V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Queanbeyan Blues had a mixed start to 2022, upset by the Rams in Round 1 and defeated by the Bulls by 28 points in Round 3. To be fair, the Blues were disrupted, with hooker Josh Mitchell playing NSW Cup for the Raiders. But the gang is now back together. And veteran five eighth Terry Campese just keeps on keeping on. In their past two outings, the Blues have put on some big scores against the Kangaroos (64-10) and Sharks (42-16).

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs started the season strongly, recording three straight wins. However, they now head into a road trip to Queanbeyan after back to back losses - against the Warriors (37-30) and the Rams (34-16). I'll tip the home team to continue on their winning way.

Season record: Blues 3 and 2 (5th, +54)
Bulldogs 3 and 2 (4th, +61)
Form: LWLWW
Bulldogs WWWLL
Attacking record: Blues 32, Bulldogs 34 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 21, Bulldogs 21 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 14 Blues 50 defeated Bulldogs 10 at Goulburn Arena

Gungahlin Bulls V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The 2021 minor premiers, the Gungahlin Bulls, have just one win to their name so far in season 2022. They beat the Blues by a big margin in Round 3 (44-16). But they head into their clash with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos after losses to the Magpies (32-16) and Sharks (30-28). The Kangaroos have also had a fall from grace this season - but finally broke through for their first win of 2022, against the Yass Magpies at Freebody. Roos prop Jayden Thomas got a double, while hooker Thomas Warner was man of the match. This match up is not far from a flip of a coin, but the Bulls have a much better attacking record and a slightly better defensive record. I'll go with the Bulls at home.

Season record: Bulls 1 and 4 (7th, -25)
Kangaroos 1 and 4 (9th, -102)
Form: Bulls LLWLL
Kangaroos LLLLW
Attacking record: Bulls 27, Kangaroos 15 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 32, Kangaroos 35 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 8 Kangaroos 60 defeated Bulls 14 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Gungahlin Bulls' Indigenous players inspire Canberra Raiders Cup club

Image

Boasting more Indigenous players than their Canberra Raiders Cup competitors, the Gungahlin Bulls will be wearing their Indigenous jersey, sporting a massive wedge-tailed eagle on the front.

"I think we've got more Indigenous players in our team than in any other team in the comp and it's been designed by all of our Indigenous players," Lucas Thomson said.

Canberra Raiders Cup to investigate alleged spectator abuse of officials

Alleged crowd abuse of officials will come under the spotlight in the Canberra Raiders Cup after a game was held up so a spectator could be ejected from the Yass ground on Saturday. A touch judge in West Belconnen's 26-18 victory over the Yass Magpies stopped the game amid allegations of homophobic and threatening language directed towards them.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 8 Preview

Image

The West Belconnen Warriors sit alone on the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup competition ladder, the only team still to be undefeated. Their clash with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, now sitting on back to back wins, shapes as one of the games of the round. The other sees the third placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers face the fifth placed Bulldogs, with the Goulburn outfit keen to stay in touch with the top four.

West Belconnen Warriors V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The return of halfback Bobby Roberts - along with fullback Ryan McQueen - is really paying off for the West Belconnen Warriors. Roberts won the McIntyre Medal, as the best player in the Canberra Raiders Cup, back in 2016 and he's polling strongly in the 2022 count. The Warriors' draw with the Bulldogs two weeks ago was the closest thing they've come to a loss.

They head into this clash with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos after a 26-18 win over the Yass Magpies at Walker Park last Saturday. They managed that despite the dismissal of their prop Mitchell Shaw in the 62nd minute, for lifting an elbow while in possession. The Warriors led 16-12 at the time - and the Magpies could not take advantage. Prop Kirren Roughley scored a double, his second sealing the match in the 75th minute. He broke through in the middle of the field and ran 50 metres to score.

The Kangaroos suffered some big losses in the opening month or so - and conceded 64 points in the Queanbeyan derby in Round 5 at Seiffert. But they have now posted back to back wins, beating the Magpies (20-12) and Bulls (24-22). The Roos went to an 8-0 lead after 12 minutes against Gungahlin last Saturday, with both Reece Robinson and Michael Cullen crossing. Four unanswered tries for the Bulls saw the home team go to a 22-8 lead, five minutes into the second half. But tries to Queanbeyan's fullback Thomas Williams and winger Aiden Agnew saw them draw within four points at the 65 minute mark. Both teams had opportunities in the final stages, but it took until the final second for the Kangaroos to cross again - with half Lachlan Ingram scoring under the posts as the siren sounded. James Horvat's conversion sealed the exhilarating victory.

This should be a good contest, but all the numbers are pointing to a Warriors win at home in this one.

Season record: Warriors 5 and 0, 1 draw (1st, +80)
Kangaroos 2 and 4 (6th, -100)
Form: Warriors WWWDW
Kangaroos LLLWW
Attacking record: Warriors 35, Kangaroos 16 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 22, Kangaroos 33 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 6 Warriors 30 defeated Kangaroos 28 at Freebody Oval

Queanbeyan Blues V Yass Magpies

The Queanbeyan Blues have now posted 40 points or more in their past three games - after a mixed start to the season. They beat the Goulburn Bulldogs, 41-28, in their last outing at Seiffert Oval. The Blues went out to a 16-0 lead after just 15 minutes, but the Dogs kept themselves in the match with first half tries to centre Dillon Rota and winger Laberaato Tauoqooqo.

The visitors trailed 22-12 at half time, and another try to Rota in the 45th minute cut the Blues' lead to just four. John Papalii's second try of the match in the 61st minute - and a try to player coach Terry Campese three minutes later - saw the Blues reassert control and take a 34-18 lead. Dillon Rota completed a hat trick in the 72nd minute, but the Blues prevailed in the end. While Terry Campese was sin binned for dissent with four minutes remaining, hooker Josh Mitchell iced the game with a last gasp field goal.

"We're building into the season slowly," Campese told The Queanbeyan Age after the match. "We were down on troops early on in the year, so it's good to get our full squad back."

The Magpies have won only one game so far in season 2022 - the Round 4 clash at Walker Park with the Bulls (32-16). They are coming off a 26-18 loss to the Warriors at Yass - their third in a row. Expect the Blues to be too strong on Saturday.

Season record: Blues 4 and 2 (4th, +67)
Magpies 1 and 5 (9th, -68)
Form: Blues WLWWW
Magpies LWLLL
Attacking record: Blues 34, Magpies 16 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 22, Magpies 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 15 Blues 52 defeated Magpies 28 at Walker Park

Woden Valley Rams V Gungahlin Bulls

The Rams are sitting in second place on the ladder after back to back wins over the Bulldogs (34-16) and Sharks (28-18). Their only losses have come against the Bushrangers (36-6) in Round 3 and the Warriors (36-20) in Round 5.

In stark contrast, the 2021 premiers, the Gungahlin Bulls, have just one win to their name this season - a 44-16 win over the Queanbeyan Blues at home in Round 3. They have come close to a win in their past two matches, going down by just two points to both the Sharks (30-28) and the Kangaroos (24-22). But close doesn't deliver two competition points. The form lines suggest a win for the Rams at home, but the Bulls are certainly capable of the upset.

Season record: Rams 5 and 2 (2nd, +16)
Bulls 1 and 5 (8th, -27)
Form: Rams LWLWW
Bulls LWLLL
Attacking record: Rams 25, Bulls 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 23, Bulls 31 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 10 Bulls 46 defeated Rams 18 at Phillip Oval

Goulburn Bulldogs V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Bulldogs are now on a three game losing streak, falling to the Warriors (37-30), Rams (34-16) and Blues (41-28). That's a harsh reversal of fortunes, after recording victories in the opening three rounds. Goulburn will be desperate to get their season back on track when they travel to Greenway on Sunday. But that will be no easy task against the third placed Bushrangers. Raiders juniors Josh Pokoney and Jack Bishop will n out for Goulburn. The Bushies are coming off a bye, having had plenty of time to reflect on their 26 all draw against the Warriors in Round 6. I'll tip Tuggeranong.

Season record: Bulldogs 3 and 3 (5th, +48)
Bushrangers 4 and 1, 1 draw (3rd, +108)
Form: Bulldogs WWLLL
Bushrangers LWWWD
Attacking record: Bulldogs 33, Bushrangers 34 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 24, Bushrangers 16 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 9 Bulldogs 32 defeated Bushrangers 22 at Goulburn Arena

Canberra Raiders Cup: Former Shark John Papalii finds 'fun' again in Queanbeyan Blues jersey

Originally contracted with the Belconnen Sharks for this season of the Canberra Raiders Cup, an unhappy John Papalii has switched to the Queanbeyan Blues.

"I've been looking forward to playing at the Blues for the last six weeks since my release. Up until now I haven't really found a good team to have fun with. I am just going to be chasing that championship."

West Belconnen Warriors sink Queanbeyan Kangaroos with late try

A late try to West Belconnen Warriors winger Leo Tuionetoa sealed a 16-10 win over Queanbeyan Kangaroos in round eight of the Canberra Raiders Cup on Saturday.

"The first 15 minutes we came out we were pretty solid, but we just fell away in the second-half. We've been doing it a bit this year, just really making it hard for ourselves," Warriors fullback Ryan McQueen said.

Is this the greatest goal kick in rugby league history?

It's the goal kick that defied gale-force winds and has lit up social media, prompting the question of whether it's the greatest kick of all time. Goulburn Bulldogs fullback Thomas Harmer was even surprised when he slotted the ridiculous conversion in the Canberra Raiders Cup under-19s game against Tuggeranong on Sunday.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 9 Preview

Image

The Canberra Raiders Cup is back, after a break for the Queen's Birthday long weekend. Round 9 is headlined by the top four clash between the West Belconnen Warriors and Queanbeyan Blues on Sunday. Saturday's match between the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Goulburn Bulldogs at Freebody will be the free live stream game on Bar TV Sports.

Yass Magpies V Belconnen United Sharks

Since producing their only win of the season against the Bulls, the Yass Magpies have suffered a four game losing streak. Their loss to the ladder leading Warriors in Round 7 was by a fairly narrow margin (26-18). But in their last outing, they conceded more than 60 points to the Blues at Seiffert Oval (62-18). They host the Belconnen United Sharks at Walker Park this Saturday.

The Sharks have suffered some big recent losses themselves. They conceded over 40 points in losses to the Warriors (52-6), Bushrangers (52-16) and Blues (42-16). They are coming off a more respectable loss to the Rams (28-18) in Round 7 at Phillip.

There's not much difference in the form lines of these two teams. Nor is there much difference in their attacking and defensive records. The Sharks have produced one more win, but both have been on home turf. The Magpies might get this one, with home ground advantage.

Season record: Magpies 1 and 6 (9th, -112)
Sharks 2 and 5 (7th, -124)
Form: Magpies WLLLL
Sharks LLWLL
Attacking record: Magpies 17, Sharks 18 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 33, Sharks 36 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 11 Sharks 44 defeated Magpies 22 at Walker Park

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Gungahlin Bulls

Since their Round 2 loss to the Blues at Seiffert, the Bushrangers have produced a very solid run. They started it with a 36-6 win over the Rams in the southern derby - a very good victory, when you consider the Rams are now running second on the ladder. The Bushies are also the team that tested the ladder leading Warriors the most, eking out a 26 all draw in Round 6.

Tuggeranong accounted for the Bulldogs in Goulburn, 24-12, in its last outing. The two teams were all locked up at 12 apiece at half time. A bullocking run from Dillon Rota saw the visitors take a four point lead near the 55 minute mark. And two quick, late tries to centre James Cahill and second rower Patrick Burch wrapped it up for the Bushies. They now host the Gungahlin Bulls.

The Bulls are finding 2022 to be a much harder row to hoe than 2021 - when they took out the minor premiership. Changes in personnel has been part of the story, having lost 2021 Fullback of the Year, Tristan Eldridge and 2021 Lock of the Year, Zac Patch. Jordan Williams has also now headed to the Blues. Gungahlin defeated the Blues in Round 3, putting 44 points on the scoreboard. But that's been their only win of the season. They've since suffered a four game losing streak - though they'll take some consolation from the fact that they lost matches against the Sharks and Kangaroos by only two points. They also lost by only three points to the Warriors in Round 1. Gungahlin was defeated by Woden, 22-14, in its last outing.

The Bushrangers can score some points, and are second only to the Blues in that department. But their defence is even more impressive. No team has conceded fewer points. The form lines and all the numbers are pointing to a win for the Bushrangers in this one.

Season record: Bushrangers 5 and 1, 1 draw (3rd, +120)
Bulls 1 and 6 (8th, -35)
Form: Bushrangers WWWDW
Bulls WLLLL
Attacking record: Bushrangers 33, Bulls 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 15, Bulls 29 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 11 Bulls 36 defeated Bushrangers 26 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Kangaroos started the year on a four game losing streak, but recent wins over the Magpies (20-12) and Bulls (24-22) have given the Queanbeyan club a boost. They are coming off a 16-10 defeat at the hands of the Warriors, but that was a very tight affair. West Belconnen led by just two points at half time and it took until the 80th minute for the Warriors to wrap it up, with a try to winger Leo Tuinonetoa. They now host the Bulldogs this Saturday.

The Bulldogs opened the season with three straight wins, but they haven't won a game since. They have had recent losses to the Warriors (37-30), Rams (34-16), Blues (41-28) and the Bushrangers (24-12). They still have a better attacking and defensive record then the Roos, by some margin. I'll tip the Bulldogs, but it is not a confident tip. Freebody Oval is a tough place to win for any away team.

Season record: Kangaroos 2 and 5 (6th, -106)
Bulldogs 3 and 4 (5th, +36)
Form: Kangaroos LLWWL
Bulldogs WLLLL
Attacking record: Kangaroos 15, Bulldogs 30 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 31, Bulldogs 25 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 15 Kangaroos 42 defeated Bulldogs 22 at Freebody Oval

West Belconnen Warriors V Queanbeyan Blues

This is the match of the round, without a shadow of a doubt. Unfortunately, it is up against the Raiders' NRL clash with the Knights, 15 minutes down the road. The Warriors are on top of the competition ladder, the only team that is still undefeated in 2022. The Blues are in fourth place, but they're now the team in the best form of the competition.

The Warriors might have won their last clash against the Kangaroos, but co-coach, captain and fullback, Ryan McQueen was not happy. While the Westies started well, they again fell away in the second half, producing far too many errors. Right after the win over the Roos, he was already looking ahead to the clash with the Blues.

"If we play like we did the past two weeks I can't see us winning the game," he told The Canberra Times. "They're a really big side all across the park 1-17, it's going to be tough but it's probably what we need at the moment."

The Blues lost big time to the Bulls in Round 3, but since then, they have gone on a point scoring spree. They were down on troops in the opening rounds. But with hooker Josh Mitchell returning from the Raiders NSW Cup side, they have since clicked into gear. In their past four games they have scored more than 40 points twice and more than 60 points twice. In their last outing against the Magpies, fullback Matt Parsons scored four tries, while centre Tristan Eldridge and second rower Noah Gafa produced doubles. Eleven tries were scored in all. They are now the No. 1 attacking team.

It is tough to tip against the Warriors given their record. Halves Bobby Roberts and Bayley Graham have been terrific. But some worrying signs are there. Meanwhile, Terry Campese and company are getting better every week. I think the Blues might get the win.

Season record: Warriors 6 and 0, 1 draw (1st, +86)
Blues 5 and 2 (4th, +111)
Form: Warriors WWDWW
Blues LWWWW
Attacking record: Warriors 32, Blues 38 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 20, Blues 22 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 11 Blues 42 defeated Warriors 10 at Seiffert Oval

Isaac Walker almost boots Gungahlin Bulls home in narrow Tuggeranong Bushrangers Canberra Raiders Cup win

Listening to Jason Kelly, you'd think Gungahlin five-eighth Isaac Walker had kicked the Bulls to a massive win - such was the praise the Tuggeranong coach heaped on the opposition playmaker. The Bushrangers came away with a thrilling 18-16 win at Greenway on Saturday.

"It got way too exciting for our liking. It was off the back of their five-eighth, who we knew had a very good kicking game," Kelly said.

Goulburn snap losing streak with strong performance over the Roos

The Goulburn Bulldogs have snapped their four-game losing streak with a dominant 80-minute performance at Freebody Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Bulldogs back-rower Ron Leapai was damaging on the right-edge for the visitors, as he rallied his side home for a comfortable 38-18 victory over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

Queanbeyan Blues take crucial 28-point win over West Belconnen Warriors on the road

The Queanbeyan Blues defeated the ladder leading West Belconnen Warriors, 46-18, at Kippax on Sunday.

"The top five teams are pretty congested, so it was a massive game for us," Blues coach Terry Campese said. "Especially playing Westies at their home ground, as they're probably one of the toughest teams away from home. But our completions were some of the highest in my time at the club, 80-odd per cent."

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 10 Preview

Image

We have new competition leaders in the Canberra Raiders Cup, after the West Belconnen Warriors suffered their first loss of the season last weekend. The Tuggeranong Bushrangers now sit in first place, on points differential, while the Queanbeyan Blues have moved into third. As we head into the second half of the season, the top four is separated by just one competition point. However, they now have a four point break on the rest of the pack.

This weekend's match of the round is the top four battle between the Blues and the Woden Valley Rams at Seiffert. Saturday's match between the Warriors and Gungahlin Bulls at Kippax will be the free live stream game on Bar TV Sports.

West Belconnen Warriors V Gungahlin Bulls

The West Belconnen Warriors lost their first game of the season last Sunday, defeated by the Queanbeyan Blues, 46-18. There had been some concerning signs for Warriors captain and co-coach Ryan McQueen in recent weeks - and so they came to pass against the Blues. The Queanbeyan outfit scored eight tries to three in a dominant display. The Warriors now host the seventh placed Gungahlin Bulls at Kippax.

The Bulls have gone on a five game losing streak since their big defeat of the Blues (44-16) in Round 3. However, in that time, they have lost by just two points to each of the Sharks, Kangaroos and Bushrangers.

Last weekend against Tuggeranong, the Bushies went out to an 18-6 lead at the 50th minute and looked well in control. But the Bulls launched a strong second half comeback, with bombs from Gungahlin half Isaac Walker proving very difficult for Tuggeranong fullback Damien Hayden to handle. Tries to Kieran Reilly and Rourke O'Sullivan saw the Bulls draw within two points, setting up an exciting final 10 minutes. A missed knock on from Hayden denied the Bulls one red zone opportunity, but they had other chances to steal the win - and just couldn't get there. It was a courageous effort given that three players had to back up after playing in reserve grade.

All the numbers point to a win for the Warriors in this clash, but if the Bulls can spring an upset, it won't be a complete surprise.

Season record: Warriors 6 and 1, 1 draw (2nd, +58)
Bulls 1 and 7 (8th, -37)
Form: Warriors WDWWL
Bulls LLLLL
Attacking record: Warriors 31, Bulls 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 23, Bulls 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 1 Warriors 33 defeated Bulls 30 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos suffered a 38-18 loss to the Goulburn Bulldogs at Freebody last weekend. Winger Daniel Reid scored a double, with his second in the 53rd minute seeing the Roos trail by only four points. But Goulburn came home the stronger - Dillon Rota scoring a try, and Ron Leapai two, in the final 20 minutes. The Roos are at home again on Saturday for their meeting with the ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

The Bushrangers have not tasted defeat since their 32-20 defeat to the Blues at Queanbeyan in Round 2, six games ago. They rank equal second in the competition in attack, along with the Bulldogs. Their defensive record is unmatched, however. They're conceding just under 16 points per game - and that's the sort of record any NRL team would be happy to have. Tuggeranong produced a big win over the Roos in Round 1 - and it is hard to see them losing at Freebody.

Season record: Kangaroos 2 and 6 (7th, -126)
Bushrangers 6 and 1, 1 draw (1st, +122)
Form: Kangaroos LWWLL
Bushrangers WWDWW
Attacking record: Kangaroos 16, Bushrangers 31 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 32, Bushrangers 16 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 1 Bushrangers 40 defeated Kangaroos 6 at Greenway Oval

Queanbeyan Blues V Woden Valley Rams

The Queanbeyan Blues might be running third on the competition ladder, but there's no doubt they're the No. 1 attacking team. They're on a five game winning streak, having scored more than 40 points three times and more than 60 twice. Player coach Terry Campese is now 37 years old, but he still knows how to pull the strings. The Blues were missing hooker Josh Mitchell last weekend, after he was called into the Raiders' NSW Cup team. He was replaced by Charlie Woolford, the younger brother of Raiders hooker, Zac, and the son of former Raiders' captain, Simon. He made a fine break in the lead up to one try. Tristan Eldridge also moved into the halves to partner Campese. But Campese was the chief destroyer in the 46-18 win over the Warriors. He scored a try, produced two try assists and was involved in two others.

Campese was pleased with his team's performance.

"The top five teams are pretty congested, so it was a massive game for us," he told The Canberra Times after the match. "Especially playing Westies at their home ground, as they're probably one of the toughest teams away from home. But our completions were some of the highest in my time at the club, 80-odd per cent."

The Blues next host the Woden Valley Rams in a top four clash at Seiffert. The Rams won just two matches in 2021, so they have been something of a surprise packed this season. The Rams are coming off the bye, but are on a three game winning streak. They have had recent wins over the Kangaroos (34-28), Bulldogs (34-16), Sharks (28-18) and Bulls (22-14). Their only recent loss has come against the Warriors (36-20) in Round 5. While the Rams unexpectedly won their clash with the Blues in Round 1, Queanbeyan's line up was disrupted in the early rounds. I think Queanbeyan will be too strong in this one.

Season record: Blues 6 and 2 (3rd, +139)
Rams 6 and 2 (4th, +24)
Form: Blues WWWW
Rams WLWWW
Attacking record: Blues 39, Rams 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 21, Rams 22 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 1 Rams 16 defeated Blues 6 at Phillip Oval

Goulburn Bulldogs V Belconnen United Sharks

The Goulburn Bulldogs broke a four game losing streak against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos last weekend at Freebody Oval. It would have come as a big relief to Bulldogs captain coach Tyson Greenwood - particularly after Goulburn had started the season so well, with three straight victories. Their opponents this week, the Belconnen United Sharks, were strong against the Yass Magpies last weekend, coming away from Walker Park with a 32-8 win. The Sharks have been strengthened by the addition of Zac Patch, but I expect the Bulldogs to be too strong at home in this contest.

Season record: Bulldogs 4 and 4 (5th, +56)
Sharks 3 and 5 (6th, -100)
Form: Bulldogs LLLLW
Sharks LWLLW
Attacking record: Bulldogs 31, Sharks 20 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 24, Sharks 33 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2022 Round 1 Bulldogs 38 defeated Sharks 14 at NSWRL HQ Bruce

Katrina Fanning Shield: Queanbeyan Blues, Woden Valley Rams players out to impress before women's State of Origin

Queanbeyan Blues star Teliya Hetaraka says it will be an "amazing opportunity" to play for an NRLW contract in the women's State of Origin curtain-raiser.

Hetaraka, 19, is one of many talented players who will take the field ahead of Friday night's women's State of Origin match when the Queanbeyan Blues host the Woden Valley Rams at Canberra Stadium.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Former Manly Sea Eagle Zac Saddler leads Tuggeranong Bushrangers to top

When the Manly Sea Eagles did not offer 23 year old Zac Saddler a new contract last year, he moved south and is now chipping away as a carpenter. He’s also captain of the ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers and one of the leading lights in the Canberra Raiders Cup - running fourth in the McIntryre Medal count.

"I was born in Bathurst but lived a fair bit of my life in Cooma when I was younger. My mum's still there," Saddler said. "It was moreso I got a good job opportunity."

Queanbeyan Blues' Mathew Parsons destined for higher level, says Terry Campese

Queanbeyan Blues custodian Parsons scored a Canberra Raiders Cup hat-trick in a 26-16 win over the Woden Valley Rams at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

"He's a little weapon, isn't he? He is always around the ball. He shouldn't be playing down here, he should be in Queensland Cup or NSW Cup," Blues player-coach Terry Campese said of Parsons.
