Woolford is a champion
I really enjoyed his performance, like his dad really good solid player, good crisp wide service and very direct running when he goes.
Tbh I liked his game more then starlings.
Also shout to seb kris another young player deserving of more time in green.
I hope to see Woolford get more burn for us as times goes on..

Re: Woolford is a champion
Yeah Woodford and Rocky will lead us to our best premiership IMO
But in all seriousness, was very impressive today and uncanny resemblance in style to snr. Hope he backs it up because it will make Starling more effective too .

Basically same build and running gait as his dad.
Re: Woolford is a champion
Hopefully not the same short temper.
Re: Woolford is a champion
good to see a proper dummy half, his nice wide pass really got us moving nicely.

He exceeded expectations. He'll always have that game to remember no matter what.
Whether he's a consistent Fger or has weaknesses that were keeping him out of grade football and will become apparent? Who knows.

Trev would have been spewing.

I hope the club finds a way to elevate him so that we see more of him. Agree with others - you have to have a natural #9 out there for things to really click

I was definitely very impressed with him. Big, strong, runs well, good skills. I thought he and Starling made for a pretty decent combo. Would definitely like to see him get more opportunities.

Re: Woolford is a champion
Is Trev injured?
Looks like he hasnt played since round 3 NSW Cup??
Shouldnt we be able to drop someone out of the top 30 if they are injured for the rest of the season? I dont see any other way that Woolford will be playing a game for the rest of the season, unless elliott gets COVID or something

Hamstring. Trevilyan isn’t top 30 either. You can bring players in, if the NRL approves… if you have no fit hookers in the top 30, they’ll approve.PerthRaider86 wrote: ↑May 17, 2022, 9:31 am Is Trev injured?

Given Hodgson is out for the season, Trev is injured, it's likely Germ Jnr would be approved by the NRL
He needs to stay in the team as starting hooker even if Elliott is fit.

How do they define what a hooker is though? (Giggity)greeneyed wrote: ↑May 17, 2022, 10:02 amHamstring. Trevilyan isn’t top 30 either. I mean, Starling is fit. Is wanting a back up 9 in the team ok? Frawley and Elliott are both fit. Both have played starting hooker for us multiple times despite really being a half and second rower.
I imagine the NRL could simply say that we have enough players to adequately cover the position without needing to go outside the top 30.

Indeed they might, but anyone who has seen Frawley and Elliott play at hooker knows they’re not hookers.Finchy wrote: ↑May 17, 2022, 10:33 amHow do they define what a hooker is though? Would they have to register a 'position' the player will predominantly play??? If we have Frawley as Half and Elliott as Second row, i could work out.
In the end i would love to see
9. Woolford
14. Trevilyan
I think starling as dropped off and maybe needs a stint in NSW to gain some momentum

I was pleasantly surprised by Woolford. His passing game in particular seemed to get us moving forward in a way I haven’t seen for a while.
Wonder how the Dogs didn’t give him a shot - all they have is Marshall-King.

Woolford had a minor off field incident at the dogs, but I get the impression that he's taken longer to mature off the field professionally. Might get his 2nd chance now he's a bit older.

Re: Woolford is a champion
I thought Woolford was really solid. Certainly looked sharper and more physically capable than many first string options we've had in the past. I was very impressed by how well he got our middles going early. His passes were really on point. Seemed to have the basics down pat. I liked what I saw, certainly more than I have with Trevilyan.
Given Starling was 100% fit I was surprised we were granted an exemption to bring him in for Elliott, given Frawley was also available.
Anyway, that whole exemption thing is a complete crapshoot with the NRL. Hopefully Woolford remains available.

Re: Woolford is a champion
I was told by some blow hard know it all on the game day thread he definitely wouldn’t be eligible to be picked…
Bloodlines aside, the young fella absolutely looked the part. He’s going to have his ups and downs but if he’s got the potential to develop into an above-average spine player (esp one on lower coin) then he should be given a few more games at the very least, rather than persisting with Adam Elliott who can most generously be described as a stop gap.
Unearthing cheap spine players from within is the absolute utopia - all clubs are chasing it. Win lose or draw this year, hopefully we unearth one or two that can help take us forward.

We can reasonably justify that Adam Elliott who’s a back rower whilst does his best is actually an unreasonable selection for a specialist position. We’ve been clearance to use Germ Jr as a 2nd hooker and I expect we’ll be able to use him until we have a second available

Re: Woolford is a champion
Trev named at 21, so I guess he's back, but if he also started the season outside the top 30 it mightn't depend on his fitness? idkBotman wrote:He’ll probably be eligible whilst Hodgson (season) and Trev are outRickmando wrote: ↑May 17, 2022, 2:43 pm I was told by some blow hard know it all on the game day thread he definitely wouldn’t be eligible to be picked…

Hmm
Yeah good point! I didn’t notice that
Be interesting to see if Germ Jr plays and Trev plays lower grade
Maybe Trev is still in doubt?
Hard to know what the rules are for this!

Re: Woolford is a champion
Anyway if this thread is about Germ Jnr then agree he got he forwards rolling. That involves a fair bit of confidence in stepping up and running the timing + a nice pass out in front- Starling hits high/back behind shoulder a bit too often which is part of the difference.
I actually expected him to be a level below the phsyicality needed but he had enough zip on his break to be a threat at NRL level (Starling is way quicker but that's his main bag) and made his tackles well.
He's been names at #9 again and I'm happy for him. He deserves it, real good debut. We needed a good news story.

Re: Woolford is a champion
I've tried to search around for the rules today. There's no clear statement from the NRL on it. But last year they decided that any development player or NSW Cup player could play from Round 11 on. I think it is without restriction. This year, they also said that those players could play in the first ten rounds, if players were lost due to COVID. There were unspecified requirements in relation to the salary cap.

Well hopefully that makes it a clear cut decision that he's available for selection without restriction.
Elliott and Frawley did a serviceable job, but were never going to do us any favours over an entire season.

* bump *
I don’t really care if he supposedly had a poor attitude, gained weight, or missed the occasional goal line tackle, can we get him back in the first grade side instead of Levi please? We shan’t be winning much until he’s back.

You dont win many NRL games when your #1 and #9 are not NRL standard
and right now thats your 2023 Canberra Raiders
until Stuart finds other solutions, we're going to continue to struggle. We looked a lot like this least year until we fell int Woolford. Stuart refuses to learn the lessons of seasons past.
