Re: 2022 Fans' Choice Player of the Year
Joe Tapine wins the 2022 Canberra Raiders Fans' Choice Player of the Year
Joe Tapine is the Canberra Raiders Fans' Choice Player of the Year for 2022. He has also been named Forward of the Year. Tapine was the man of the match in seven games - and in five games straight between Rounds 12 and 16, including wins over the Roosters and the Knights. There were only five games in which he failed to receive any votes - and his season tally of 42 was the biggest since the award commenced in 2004. The previous record points tally was 29, set by Alan Tongue in 2006 and matched by Shaun Fensom in 2011.
Tapine has always been a player who has had huge potential. He has played in nine finals games - including the 2019 Grand Final - and reached representative level, playing 12 Tests for New Zealand. But it feels like 2022 is the year in which the 28 year old has reached his full potential. Few Raiders players have produced such a dominant season.
Controversy reigned last year, after Tapine had been dropped to the bench and his wife, Kirsten posted critical comments on social media about Raiders coach Ricky Stuart. However, any rift between player and coach back then has been well and truly mended. The pair now regularly meet for lunch. According to Tapine, last year's controversy proved to be the catalyst for an improved relationship with the coach and his improved performances on the field. Stuart says Tapine is now the best prop in the game.
Tapine ranks first in the NRL for post contact metres (1596) - even though he's outside the top 40 players for tackle breaks. He is also third for running metres and offloads (42). No other other forward has produced more running metres. He's averaged a career best 164 metres per game in 2022, well above his previous best in 2020 (125). He's never made more tackle breaks in a season (69). Nor has he ever done as much work in defence (29 tackles per game).
What has led to his career best form?
"I think it's just like anything, you train for a long time and it might take a bit longer to see the success come through," Tapine told The Canberra Times this week.
"I feel like my work over the last couple of years is starting to pay off. I've tweaked stuff that's made it better. I can't put it down to one thing it's a lot of things - my professionalism. I've got off the beers for a while. I feel a bit better, a bit fresh. Little things like that."
It would be very deserving if he was named one of the Dally M Props of the Year for 2022.
Second rower Hudson Young finished as the runner up in the Fans' Choice count. He has produced a very strong second half of the season, taking man of the match honours in four games. He has scored 13 tries in 2022, just one behind the Raiders' top try scorer, Sebastian Kris. If he is selected in the Kangaroos' World Cup squad at the end of the season - and there is plenty of talk that he will be - he certainly won't be out of place.
Five eighth Jack Wighton is the 2022 Fans' Choice Back of the Year. He had a very strong start to the season - and was named man of the match three times in the opening month. He also picked up three points in the Round 19 win over the Warriors and the big victory over the Sea Eagles in Round 24. In 2022, he's scored four tries and produced nine try assists, 14 line break assists, 12 offloads and 14 forced line drop outs.
The Canberra Raiders Fans' Choice Player of the Year has been awarded since 2004, with the inaugural winner being Ruben Wiki. Josh Papalii holds the record for most trophies - four. Other winners have included Alan Tongue, Terry Campese, Shaun Fensom, Jarrod Croker and Josh Hodgson. The award, sponsored by The Greenhouse Canberra Raiders supporters site, is voted on by the fans on line, who give 3-2-1 points to the best players each week. The Player of the Year receives a crystal trophy from The Greenhouse.
