Late Mail: Jarrod Croker is good to go after missing the first two games following off-season shoulder surgery. There are injury concerns, however, surrounding star duo Hudson Young (knee) and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad (cork). Young told The Canberra Times he is confident of playing while Caleb Aekins is on standby for Nicoll-Klokstad: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-pr ... b5bb7de3a4
I wonder if that's actually early mail... guess we'll see how things look by tomorrow.

Like the one where I said our middle defence was a little bit more leaky in 2020 than it was in 2019 and the stats provided on that SI website showed we conceded an average of 0.54 tries a game through the middle in 2019 compared to 0.60 tries per game through the middle in 2020. Is that the one?
Or is it the one where I said Stuart will be keen to win with our current roster as our team is ageing, especially with the addition of Ryan James. Noting that the average age of our boys when we run out on Saturday is 27.7, which is older than the Roosters who had the oldest average age of 27.2 last season (before the likes of Aubo and SBW retired).
Yeah, I'm really embarrassed. Oh the shame.

Old mate doesn't belong on that list, old mate is a term you use for someone who's either generic or you can't remember their name.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Canberra Raiders blessed with backline riches in strong show of NRL depth
Preseason concerns over backline depth have turned into excitement for Raiders fans.
"It's massive for the club, and for Ricky to know that he's got those players that he can rely on," Jordan Rapana said. "Touch wood no one does, but if someone does go down there's just as good as a replacement there. Last year was massive for that depth as well, and those young boys getting a run. Now we know that those players are able to play first grade and they're at first grade standard."

Canberra Raiders rarity as rehabilitation room clears out ahead of NRL clash with New Zealand Warriors
For the first time in recent memory, Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has a fully fit NRL squad to choose from for the Warriors clash.
"I don't think anyone will be looking back on video of last year to be honest," Croker said."We're looking back at the last couple of weeks and the way the Warriors have started."

Canberra Raiders player admits 'poor judgement' in Christmas Day drink driving
A remorseful Canberra Raiders player has today taken responsibility for his actions outside court, saying he made a "poor judgment" to get behind the wheel in the early hours of Christmas Day while heavily intoxicated.
"I apologise to the club, obviously the NRL as well, my family, my friends, my teammate. It was just a poor judgment on my behalf to put myself in this position."

That was far from a great attacking display though. A few opportunistic, individual efforts and poor defence. Not the kind of slick attacking structure that gives me confidence against better defences.-TW- wrote: ↑March 25, 2021, 6:53 pmWe scored 30 in the first game? From the wingers to the props, they're big and powerful: Stuart expecting tough clash with Warriors
The Canberra Raiders might be firm favourites for their clash with the New Zealand Warriors on Saturday afternoon at Canberra Stadium - but Raiders coach Ricky Stuart knows it is going to be a tough contest for the Green Machine. It almost always has been.
"They're a very big, powerful team," Stuart said today.
"They're always a tough team to play against. They've got skill, they have a lot of attacking ability through a number of individuals. They're a big, explosive, powerful team."
"They've always been known for big powerful middles and they certainly have that. It strings right out to their edges with two very big wingers and a smart fullback. You've always got to be willing defensively against these big powerful teams, like the Warriors."
"[They have a] new coach, a number of new players. It's very early in the season. You can see by all the games at the moment, there's a high majority of them being really tough contests. This will be another one."
Stuart is hoping for better conditions on Saturday than his team experienced at Kogarah on Sunday night against the Sharks. A torrent of water had been dumped on Sydney in the lead up - and rain continued through the match.
"Hopefully we have a dry day, that'd be good," Stuart said.
"They were tough conditions last week. I though we were brilliant in the first half. In those conditions, we completed at about 90 odd per cent."
"Our downfall was the lack of completions in the second half. It made us defend so much more. Fortunately, we were very gritty and determined in defence and we did a good job."
The Raiders had a close shave against the Sharks, with Cronulla very nearly running over the top of Canberra in the second forty. The result was in doubt right until the final siren - but the Raiders held on for a 12-10 victory. He knows the Raiders won't be able to afford to relax against the Warriors.
"I don't think there's a team in the comp you can really give up against," Stuart said.
"We've learned that the hard way over many years. You can't take your foot off the gas, because teams have the ability to come back and get you in a small period of time."
"Like we did last week, we had to play out to the 80th minute and fortunately, we got the points."
Stuart says that his team has bounced back well this week - and will be ready for the Warriors, despite the shorter turnaround.
"We had a good session on Wednesday," he said.
"We've only had the one field session so far. We've had a couple of days of just work inside and recovery. Good session Wednesday, one more to go."
"We've had two long turnarounds in the first two games, so the short week this week's been good. Get in and have a training run, captain's run and play."
Stuart says that he expects Hudson Young - who had a knee problem late in the game against the Sharks - will play tomorrow.
"He got through a fair bit of work on Wednesday and I expect him to get through today, and he should be right."
Both Corey Horsburgh and Corey Harawira-Naera are now available for selection, after serving suspensions for drink driving incidents over the Christmas break.
Legal proceedings have been completed for both players, after Harawira-Naera's case was brought before the Magistrates Court this week.
Horsburgh has been selected for the Raiders' NSW Cup team that will play Mounties tomorrow - but Harawira-Naera was not named to play in any grade this week.
Asked what the two Coreys would need to do to get back into the frame for first grade, Stuart was short and to the point.
"Work their butts off."
A report for The Greenhouse
"He'd give his right arm for the club": Why Ricky Stuart knew he had to protect Jarrod Croker from Jarrod Croker
Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has been there and done that. Back in his playing days, being told by his coach that he had to miss a match - for his own good.
And that's what he had in mind when he delayed the return of co-captain Jarrod Croker to the playing field in 2021 - so as to enable Croker to fully recover from off season shoulder surgery.
After missing the opening two rounds of the season, Croker will return to the field in Saturday's clash with the Warriors - and Stuart couldn't be happier.
"It's of great assistance to our leadership and experience," Stuart said today.
"Jarrod's had 279 games of football, he's our leading point scorer and it's great to have him back."
Stuart believes that the extra couple of weeks of recovery and conditioning will be invaluable for Croker's confidence.
"The day that I told him that he was going to sit out, I noticed him training better that day."
"It was just a relief for Jarrod to think 'Well I'm not going to be playing this week'... knowing the fact that he had some more time under his belt to prepare."
"Sometimes you need to be told. I've been there and done that. I've been told myself, and then when you're told you realise it, and you move on and you become better."
"I know physically he's that extra five or 10 per cent that we needed in regards to his condition."
Stuart says that Croker did all he could to be fit for Round 1, because he "bleeds green".
"They're the players I love coaching," Stuart said.
The players who bleed green.
"Jarrod would give his right arm for the club," Stuart said.
"That's why we need to protect him from himself. He wanted to play and do the right thing by the team in game one."
Stuart fully expected that Sebastian Kris could do the job in first grade in the No. 3 jersey, after an impressive off season.
"Seb [Kris] had a great off season and I was very confident Seb would fill the role for the couple of weeks that Jarrod was going to be out. And Seb certainly did that," he said.
Stuart is now plotting a way forward for the youngster. Stuart says Kris has the ability to play anywhere in the outside backs, as a bench utility, and even in the second row.
"There's a plan. I've spoken to Seb and I actually spoke to his father after the game on Sunday night," Stuart said.
"He has the ability to [play second row]. Seb can come on and play anywhere in the outside backs. The work he's done in the off season gives you the confidence to pick him as a utility even on the bench."
On Saturday afternoon, Stuart made some late changes to his team to face the Warriors. Dunamis Lui was omitted from the squad, with Sia Soliola moving into the starting team and Kris onto the bench.
Meanwhile, Canberra's right centre, Curtis Scott has also started the 2021 season impressively.
His first season with the club was disrupted by his arrest in Sydney in the aftermath of Australia Day celebrations and the legal processes that followed - as well as by injury.
He was eventually cleared of police charges, his arrest found to be unlawful. He was treated brutally by police in the process of the arrest, with the presiding magistrate suggesting he would have been safer wandering onto the road and being hit by a car than he was in the hands of police.
Scott also injured his leg in the Round 16 clash with the Bulldogs - and finished the season on the sideline, requiring surgery to repair a fracture.
In 2021, he seems to have a new lease on life.
"Right from the pre season when he came back from his operation, he has trained hard and put the necessary weight back on," Stuart said.
"He's back at the playing weight that he should be at. He lost a lot of weight through stress and concern last year - and the lack of training."
"But he's definitely back to the physical nature he should be at."
