Strong team.
I don't like the Scott selection, but prepared to give him another chance. Kris deserves his spot after being highly impressive in the trial.
I would've picked Guler on the bench, but can understand that Ricky may want to ease him back in. Sia and James are always going to be more reliable at this stage, given their experience and age. No one is replacing Sutton there, he's the best bench middle we have right now to come on after Papa and/or Taps IMO.
Havili is the right choice for the #14, but I worry about not having an outside back. None of those guys are capable of replacing an edge, should that edge have to move to the backs (which in itself is very far from ideal), in 2021.

Tbh bit disappointed semi missed out he was our biggest strike weapon on the outside last year.
Also a bit sad we are going havili not starling..
Tbh on paper our outside backs are garbage compared to there’s, our forwards are well well better and halves better so we should get up...
But I’m hoping to see kris / Scott or someone from our backs fire otherwise it will be a disappointing year...

I expect we will see a much different Curtis Scott this year. I'm treating him as if he has a new recruit. He definitely deserves a second chance after what he had to put up with last year. I think (and hope) he will be our best back this year.

Have to take y'all word for it on Kris, although I wasn't sold on Timoko yet. Is Valemei playing lower grades somewhere? Hopefully there's a chance for him to iron out his hands/defence
Interesting that Havili chosen over Starling. I'm a big fan of Havili though so all good for me
Not sure about Sutton on bench. He's a good workhorse but one dimensional and has a bit of the handsies. Don't get me wrong I am nitpicking and like him overall, but I think I'd give Guler the edge

If we lose an outside back I would put Wighton there and Hodgson to 7 with Havili at 9.
Wests have a decent team but our forwards and bench in particular should monster them.
If our centres have good years than the team will be in a prelim again.

Some big calls .
Really not sure its a wise decision to fill our final spot in the 30 man squad with a centre when we get croker back so soon and have other decent options playing reserves.
If kris really can play as an edge backrower then that would make it more understandable.

I think a lot of the result of this game will come down to fitness and dropped ball. That and containing the Leilua's and Laurie on the edge

Canberra Raiders centre Sebastian Kris gets a new top 30 contract... and is back to feeling like himself again
Sebastian Kris is not only healthy again, but he's earned himself a spot in the Canberra Raiders' starting line-up... as well as an upgrade to fill the final spot on the 30-man roster. He was thankful for his family's support after taking 2020 off, as he got himself mentally right.
"It's hard to pinpoint. I was just feeling not myself. I just thought I'd take a step back from everything and just rebuild those blocks," Kris said. "I've come back stronger and felt better than ever really."

Canberra Raiders forward Joe Tapine reaping benefits of increased depth
Canberra Raiders lock Joe Tapine has said it will be an emotional occasion for new Raider Ryan James this Sunday as he makes his return to the field after suffering successive ACL injuries.
"I know he’s buzzing and there will be a lot of emotion going into [the game]," Tapine said.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Really happy for Kris though
I really thought in limited time he looked like a guy capable of carving out a really solid NRL career and I’m really glad he took the year to get his mental health right and has worked his way back to earn this opportunity
That’s a truly wonderful story

Re: 2020 Rd 1 V Tigers: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
Paps and Tarps give us plenty of strike in the fwds intially - but the bench looks pretty one dimensional (solid?). And the backs look one dimensional as well. I do not feel as confident about the team now I see it written out. Nervous jitters from me maybe
Re: 2020 Rd 1 V Tigers: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
The edge question is interesting
If we do need to replace Young or Whitehead, who is it?
There are no good options at all. And further more, if we need to replace an outside back or halves, the go to option would be to Whitehead goes to centre or 5/8th and everyone else shuffles around... so really if we lose anyone of the back 5, the halves or edges, we're basically going to need James to defend out wide

Re: 2020 Rd 1 V Tigers: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
No way do spine players get moved around to accomodate an injury. No chance.
Any injury to a back or edge will see a middle playing on the edge - probably Tapine. Only the two edge players can cover the backs, although I doubt very well. Elliott is as slow as a tractor, bless him.
I can understand the need to stock the bench with middles early in the season for rotation, but after a few rounds I really don't think that's sustainable. Kris would be ideal on the bench once Croker's back IMO.

Smelly is often the first one to be moved. Pretty sure in the 2016 prelim final against the storm he was on the wing at one stage!

Disappointed in the Starling selection.

I didnt express that clearly, im not saying Whitehead into 5/8th and then Wighton shifting around. That was an extension of the idea of a half getting hurt. 'afgtnk wrote: ↑March 9, 2021, 6:48 pm No way do spine players get moved around to accomodate an injury. No chance.

I think if Wighton or Georgey had to come off, Whitehead might move into 5/8th... though they could easily move Hodgson into the halves and play Havilii at hooker i guess
Basically there is a chance that 1-7 or 11/12 have to leave the feild, we're playing a middle on the edge as you said
\
And i neglected to consider Tapine, he's the clear choice. THat actually makes me feel a little better.

Yeah I think Whitehead's probably first cab off the rank. I vaguely recall him filling in there at some point this season.... George going off?Botman wrote: ↑March 9, 2021, 7:01 pmI didnt express that clearly, im not saying Whitehead into 5/8th and then Wighton shifting around. Hodgo you possibly could move in the event of a half getting injured, provided he didn't defend as a half.
Re: 2020 Rd 1 V Tigers: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
He played there a few years ago, and set up about 2-3 tries as a ball playing half... might have been a Wighton/Sezer in game injyr
it was really incredible though. Threw a money cut out pass to i think Rapana to set one up.
Just a tremendously skillful player
