AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders lost 16-12, to the Cronulla Sharks in Round 1 the Tarsha Gale Cup. The Green Machine had two point lead with 10 minutes remaining, courtesy of a try to Krystal Blackwell in the 35th minute. But the Sharks finished the stronger, with a try in the 53rd minute giving the visitors a first up win. The sixth placed Raiders now head to Camden for a Round 2 meeting with the Wests Tigers. The Tigers are in second place on the ladder, after a 22-12 win over the Parramatta Eels at Leichhardt Oval in Round 1. The Tigers beat the Raiders in Round 3 last year, 22-14, at Raiders Belconnen.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a 28-4 loss to the Cronulla Sharks in Round 1 of the Harold Matthews Cup - a result which sees the Green Machine in 14th place on the ladder. The Raiders were first to score, through winger Siamani Leuluai in the eighth minute. But after that, it was all the Sharks. Cronulla led 10-4 at half time, and posted a total of five tries. The Raiders meet the Western Suburbs Magpies in Round 2 at Camden. The Magpies had 24-18 win at home over the North Sydney Bears in Round 1 - and sit in seventh on the ladder on points differential. The Raiders have narrowly won the past two encounters with the Magpies: 16-14 in 2019 and 14-12 in 2018.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders produced an exciting 28-24 victory over the Cronulla Sharks in Round 1 of the SG Ball Cup. Both teams looked a bit rusty in the opening stages, but the Raiders gained the ascendancy in the final stages of the first half. In the 28th minute, half back Sione Moala forced a line drop out and, on the back of a penalty, hooker Toby Thorburn was able to burrow over for the first try. Just three minutes later, New Zealand import Jack Sandford got his chance to show some speed, getting his first four pointer on his debut in the green. The Raiders took an 8-0 lead to the break.

The Sharks got themselves on the scoreboard in the first minute of the second half, with winger Samuel Stonestreet scoring under the posts. But three minutes later the Raiders struck back. Winger Livai Kaloutolu finished a great long range try, with Caleb Esera making a big run up field in the lead up. Kaloutolu got a double in the 46th minute, despite the Raiders playing with 12 men - with bench player Noah Saddler sin binned for a ruck infringement. That gave the Raiders a 20-6 lead, but the Sharks opened up, piling on three tries. The visitors had a two point lead, with 10 minutes remaining. A try to Raiders forward Jayden Clarkson in the 63rd minute saw the Green Machine wrest back control, and Canberra sealed the match with a penalty goal to Sione Moala in the final minute. Moala, a former Warriors junior, was probably the man of the match in his debut for the Raiders.

The Raiders are in sixth place on the ladder, on points differential, and head to Camden's Kirkham Oval for a clash with the Magpies in Round 2. The Magpies had a big 38-4 win over the North Sydney Bears at Camden in Round 1, putting them in second spot on the ladder. The Raiders have had big wins over the Magpies in their past two meetings: 42-6 in 2019 and 70-4 in 2018.

After a narrow win in round one, the Canberra Raiders SG Ball Cup side will be looking for back to back victories this Saturday.

“I was quite pleased considering the quality of the Sharks, they are a good strong side,” coach Ash Barnes said. “I was quite pleased with the boys’ resilience. With all the things that were happening in the game, they kept fighting it out and got the win late in the game.”

Four junior Canberra Raiders players sacked after alcohol-fueled glassing incident

Four Canberra Raiders juniors have been sacked by the club after a violent incident last weekend during which at least one player in question was glassed.

The quartet, three of whom were recruited from western Sydney, had played in the Raiders' round one SG Ball side which beat Cronulla on Saturday before the alcohol-fueled incident which is believed to have occurred in a public place in Civic.

Canberra Raiders sack four players over glassing in Civic district

The Raiders have sacked four SG Ball players who were involved in an incident that included one of the players being glassed. It’s understood at least three players tried to cover up the incident by giving false information to Raiders management.

Raiders head coach Ricky Stuart said: “The incident is one thing, but lying to your superiors just doesn’t wash at our club.It may seem tough, but this isn’t the culture that we accept at our club.’’

I think it's important the club takes a stand here. We've all witnessed what can happen if our juniors arentb reigned in. Not sure how I feel about them getting signed by other clubs. On the one hand it stinks but on the other hand these are young blokes who probably deserve another chanceb so they can learn and move on from their mistake

As you say, the other option is to rub them out of the game forever which is just a non starter.

NRL has an integrity commission to decide if any suspensions are warranted, let it go to work. Setting a standard is going to be more important than losing 4 u19s players. There'll be 4 more next season.

How it happened: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale team has been defeated by the Wests Tigers, 16-10 at Kirkham Oval, Camden. The Raiders were the first to score through winger Klaudia Osztrenkovics, after just five minutes. But the Tigers quickly struck back with a try in the 11th minute to Jayme Willingham - and took their 6-4 lead to the break. The Tigers went further to the lead just after half time, with a try to Folau Vaki. Raiders bench player Jaxan Blackhall brought the Green Machine back into the game with 15 minutes remaining. Her converted try levelled the scores at 10-10. But, as in Round 1, the Raiders were squeezed out of the game in the final stages. A penalty goal to Jessica Whelan from in front of the posts, put the Tigers in front. The Raiders threatened, with a big break down the touch line, with a couple of minutes remaining. But the Tigers finished the stronger, with a perfect kick to the try line producing a Wests try for Tehillah Vaeluaga on the bell.

The Tarsha Gale Cup team just squeezed out of the game in the final stages again. First a penalty goal, then a big kick to the try line on the last tackle, produced a try right on the bell. A bit unlucky that a big incursion down the other end didn't produce a try for the Raiders with around two minutes left.

The Magpies scored five tries in the first half, while the Raiders were unable to get themselves on the board. Canberra scored three tries in the second half, with second rower Blake Halls getting a double. Fullback Michael Griffiths scored a consolation try just before full time. While the Raiders outscored the home team, three tries to two, in the second half, it was too little, too late - and the Magpies were well in control throughout the match.

How it happened: The Canberra Raiders SG Ball team has opened the season with two wins in a row, defeating the Western Suburbs Magpies today, 16-10, at Kirkham Oval, Camden. The Raiders had a difficult week, after four of the squad was sacked on Friday - due to an off field incident that followed the team's Round 1 win. The disrupted line up started the match strongly. Half back Sione Moala scored the first try after eight minutes. That was quickly followed up by tries to second rowers Noah Saddler and Clay Webb. Canberra led by 16-0 at the 22nd minute mark, but that was the end of the points for the Green Machine. The Magpies scored the only two tries of the second half - in the space of seven minutes. AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale team was defeated by the Wests Tigers, 16-10 last Saturday at Kirkham Oval, Camden. The Raiders were the first to score through winger Klaudia Osztrenkovics, after just five minutes. But the Tigers quickly struck back with a try in the 11th minute to Jayme Willingham - and took their 6-4 lead to the break. The Tigers went further to the lead just after half time, with a try to Folau Vaki. Raiders bench player Jaxan Blackhall brought the Green Machine back into the game with 15 minutes remaining. Her converted try levelled the scores at 10-10. But, as in Round 1, the Raiders were squeezed out of the game in the final stages. A penalty goal to Jessica Whelan from in front of the posts, put the Tigers in front. The Raiders threatened, with a big break down the touch line, with a couple of minutes remaining. But the Tigers finished the stronger, with a perfect kick to the try line producing a Wests try for Tehillah Vaeluaga on the bell.

The Raiders are yet to produce a win in this grade in 2021, and are placed seventh in a nine team competition. The Steelers sit in fourth place, following a Round 1 bye, and a 10-4 victory over the Roosters Indigenous Academy in Round 2. The Steelers have won both previous encounters between the clubs, the last a 58-4 win over the Raiders in 2019.

They suffered a big 32-14 loss at the hands of the Western Suburbs Magpies last Saturday at Camden's Kirkham Oval. The Magpies scored five tries in the first half, while the Raiders were unable to get themselves on the board. Canberra scored three tries in the second half, with second rower Blake Halls getting a double. Fullback Michael Griffiths scored a consolation try just before full time. While the Raiders outscored the home team, three tries to two, in the second half, it was too little, too late - and the Magpies were well in control throughout the match.

Canberra sits in 13th place on the ladder, on points differential, and host the ninth placed Steelers at Belconnen Oval in Round 3. The Steelers, are also yet to post a victory, but sit on two competition points, thanks to a Round 1 bye. Illawarra lost 26-18 to the Roosters last weekend at Mascot Oval. The Steelers won the last clash between the clubs in this grade, 28-22, in Round 9 2019 at Seiffert Oval.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders SG Ball team has opened the season with two wins in a row, after defeating the Western Suburbs Magpies on Saturday, 16-10, at a wet Kirkham Oval, Camden. The Raiders had a difficult week, after four of the squad was sacked last Friday - due to an off field incident that followed the team's Round 1 win. To add to their woes, an injury to Caleb Esera in the warm up meant the Green Machine had to play with just 16 men. The disrupted line up started the match strongly. Half back Sione Moala scored the first try after eight minutes. That was quickly followed up by tries to second rowers Noah Saddler and Clay Webb. Canberra led by 16-0 at the 22nd minute mark, but that was the end of the points for the Green Machine. The Magpies scored the only two tries of the second half - in the space of seven minutes. They drew within six points of the Raiders, but Canberra held on for the victory.

Canberra sits on top of the competition ladder, the only team with a perfect record. They return home for their Round 3 clash with the 13th placed Illawarra Steelers. The Steelers are yet to record a win, having a bye in Round 1, and losing last weekend to the Roosters, 28-16 at Mascot Oval. The Raiders have the better recent record in matches between these clubs, but they lost the last clash. It was a 28-22 loss for the Raiders at home at Seiffert Oval in Round 9 of 2019.
