AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders sat in eighth place on the competition ladder last year, when the season was suspended, and then cancelled due the pandemic. The Raiders lost their clash with the Sharks in Round 5 2020, 40-28, at Gungahlin Enclosed. The Raiders conceded two early tries, but with the wind behind them, they piled on four tries in a row, posting 22 points. Unfortunately, the Raiders conceded a try to the Sharks after the half time hooter, and it was all Cronulla in the second half. Canberra's only second half try was a consolation to Niu Mariota in the final minute of the game.
A number of players will be backing up from 2020. Samuel Gash moves from centre to fullback, with Brock Sing's shift to five eighth. Centre Michael Griffiths and half Leroy Murray return in the backs. Props David White and Matthew Parkes are going around again in the forwards, along with Owen Hromow, Noah Martin and Clay Sing.

AT A GLANCE: When the 2020 SG Ball season was suspended, and then cancelled, the Canberra Raiders were sitting in second place on the competition ladder, just one competition behind the ladder leading Newcastle Knights. They had a 4 and 1 record. The squad included some exciting prospects, and it was a team that seemed destined for big things in the finals.
We will see some of those prospects line up again on Saturday: Jayden Clarkson at prop and Caleb Esera and Clay Webb in the second row. Ata Mariota's brother, Niu, has progressed from Harold Matthews and will start off the bench. Niu impressed the rugby league world last year, with a 45 metre try scoring effort going viral. He brushed off half the opposition team on the way to the try line. New Zealand recruit Jack Sandford also had a viral moment late last year... the video of his friends giving him a moving farewell haka at the airport before he headed to Australia. He takes the No. 1 jersey.
The Raiders defeated the Sharks 20-16 in Round 5 last year at Gungahlin Enclosed, after trailing 12-4 at half time.

Re: 2021 Canberra Raiders Junior Representatives
Saturday’s Raiders games now listed as “Bruce Oval”. That’s the old Raiders HQ and... that’s the worst possible venue for the spectators. It’s a training ground and probably a good surface. But it’s not designed for any sort of crowd, and it’s not possible to get anywhere near one of the sidelines. Obstructed views are the norm, given tents etc are pitched on the sidelines for the bench.
I see Belconnen United Sharks are going to use it as their home ground this year. It is even worse than their last ground, which saying something.
We also now have the Tarsha Gale Cup teams and the full Sharks teams.

Only other oval in Bruce that is set up for high level games is Brumbies HQ, so I'd assume so

Junior Representatives Round 1 Preview
With the 2020 junior representative season cut short last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been challenges due to players missing valuable game time. However, a change in the age groups by NSWRL, as well as a new approach in training has helped negate that.
Each of the three grades has moved up one year in their age groups, which also compliments the Country Championships which have remained as Under 16 and Under 18 competitions.
“Now, we don’t need to make too hard of a call on players,” Raiders Head of Pathways and Performance, Dean Souter said.
“If there’s a kid who’s not clearly ready to be in an S.G. Ball or Harold Matthews environment, we can put them in the Riverina and Monaro pathway and bring them through the following year.”

Sharks kick off in Harold Matthews... we are underway! Beautiful day now for footy, but it rained heavily for seven or more hours from very early this morning. Ground still in good condition.

47th min TRY SHARKS and it’s converted. The result of good pressure, they’ve had a chance denied by good Raiders defence, but they couldn’t stop that one.

11th min Raiders held up over the line, Sharks hold on in the red zone... and they get a piggyback penalty.

16th min Raiders kick to in goal is too long. Seven tackle set conceded... and another penalty. Still 0-0, neither side really on top, both have had chances. The set ends with a Sharks knock on in the red zone.

27th min The execution from both teams, not really on song. Quite a few errors. Raiders kick ahead on the last again defused by the Sharks.

28th min A grubber from Raiders half Sione Moala produces a forced line drop out... and now a penalty to the Raiders on the Sharks goal line.
TRY RAIDERS Toby Thorburn is the scorer, he burrows through from close range. No conversion from Moala.

32nd min TRY RAIDERS to fullback Jack Sandford in the south west corner, showed some speed, no conversion from Moala. Hearing five eighth Josh Pokoney, who left the field early in the match, has a shoulder injury. Hopefully not too serious.
Raiders 8-0

36th min TRY SHARKS to Samuel Stonestreet just a minute in, big break down the middle of the field and it’s converted from in front by Ryan Rivett. The wind is very strong, cross field, but probably more behind the Sharks.
Raiders 8-6
And now the Raiders kick off is out on the full.

45th min Raiders have a player binned for repeated infringements, Noah Saddler. Very tough call. Raiders under pressure in the red zone, but the Sharks throw it over the sideline.

46th min TRY RAIDERS to Livai Kaloutolu, his second, set up by Josh Billing. Billing featured in the last try as well. Moala converts. Moala has been very busy.

49th min TRY SHARKS to William Abou-Arrage. The man in the bin is understandably making a difference to the Raiders’ defence. Converted Rivett.

57th min TRY SHARKS to Kobie Wilson and converted by Rivett. Just good quick running from dummy half, up the middle. The game is very fast with fewer scrums, and the referee is being very tough on any slowing of the ruck.
