Re: Canberra Raiders to return to NSW Cup
If you want to see how long it has been since we had a NSW Cup team, have a read of this thread - it was from our last game in 2007 when we went down to Balmain 15-14 in golden point at Leichhardt Oval. I was at that game.
Terry Campese came back into the side because he had played a few games in first grade but hadn’t yet established himself as a first grader.
On the same day Jersey Flegg played in Canberra and people were lamenting the fact young Josh McCrone had signed with Penrith for the next season.

Here is my report from the game. I would have given live updates but remember in those days we didn’t have phones with internet!! I too went to Leichardt yesterday. Very disappointing, particularly with the result of the Penrith v Parramatta game last night. Pretty good report LimeGreen, however I will make some comments.
Firstly for those interested, the team was
1. Goodwin
2. Sullivan
3. Sau
18. Pearson
5. Brophy
6. Campese
7. Herbert
8. Thurling
9. Hinchcliffe
10. Lasscock
11. Rothery
12. Picker
13. Barton
14. McLean
15. Lawrence
16. White
20. Fensom
When I arrived, was getting out of the car when I saw Glen Buttriss and Brad Cross pull up next to me. Crossy had his foot in a moon boot and said that he had some sort of injury to his foot and that was why he wasn't playing. Williams was also injured and Raston didn't get a game I don't think. Neil Henry and David Sharpe has also made the trip.
I thought the game was played at a pretty slow pace. Apart from the fact that it rained a fair bit before and during the match (although not that heavy) the ground looked really heavy and I thought both teams struggled to hold their feet. It was a grinding game with neither side looking like putting on a lot of points.
It took probably 20 odd minutes for the first try when Lawrence charged down a kick, it fell to Rothery, he passed it back to Lawrence and he went in. Herby easy conversion. Balmain dominated after that and it was no surprise when they went in to a long range try to their half back, Blake Lazurus was his name, and he was probably the best player on the park. Bronx tried hard to stop him but slipped at the crucial time.
6-6 all at half time and Balmain continued to dominate in the second half and scored again. They got a penalty a while later at it was 14-6 with about 16 mins to go. I thought we showed a bit of panic when Campo went for a short kick off but it wasn't long after that Bronx broke through and scored. Herby a good conversion from a difficult angle with the Balmain peanuts behind him giving it to him.
Campo had been kicking bombs all day and their full back looked great under them but I kept thinking that we would make one mistake, and sure enough did did drop one and gave us great field position.
With a couple of minutes to go, Bronx looked like he was going to score but was held up. Bronx in his usual fashion blew up but the in goal judge, touch judge and ref were all a couple of metres away and probably made the right call. A couple of plays later we got a penalty for stripping right in front and Herby took the two to send it into extra time.
Because of the heavy conditions it was always going to be difficult for either team to kick field goals especially from long range. Campo did have the ball about 40 metres out but was no real chance to kick the FG so went for another bomb. I have no problem with his decision. Balmain then got a very dubious penalty which gave them great field position and they were able to score a great field goal to end our season, and at least for the forseeable future, write the final page in our Premier League history.
So there you go, hopefully I have got the order of everything right. I didn't take notes or anything so I am writing this from memory 24 hours later.
Specifically on Lime Green's comments
Herbert - totally agree. Has had a very disappointing season. However, I doubt that he has been fit for the past 18 months. To be fair, he is better than he showed yesterday. Does need to step up next year. Probably only had one or two kicks in play. Long, long way to go to challenge for first grade.
Campo - couldn't have written it better myself. Enough said.
Bronx - I think you are probably being a bit harsh there. Wasn't his best game, but he was the one player who looked like scoring. It wasn't a brain explosion, it was a slip. His catch of a high ball in the second half was superb, showed enormous courage. I know what you are saying about his yelling from the back, but I really think the others take it with a grain of salt, and no one would ever accuse him of not caring. I thought Hinchy seemed more interested in arguing with the ref at times rather than getting on with it. Although we certainly didn't get the better end of the pineapple with the ref.
Picker - interesting comments. I thought he was good but not great. I think this bloke is the next big thing, so I have very high expectations of him and did expect he would dominate yesterday. Rather he was just very good.
Lawrence - yeah very good PL performer. Not sure whether he would be big enough and strong enough to play in the forwards in first grade. Is certainly very fast for a forward and has a real go.
All in all it was a disappointing end. Who knows if we had have got to next week, we may have been able to go on with it, we did have a very good team. However, we finished 6th because we had a terrible first half of the season, and whilst we were unlucky and if results had have gone our way, we still could have scaped through, but to me if you finish 6th and get beat, you can't have too many qualms about being eliminated.

Re: Canberra Raiders to return to NSW Cup
There were some interesting comments from Lime Green re Terry Campese which I agreed with at the time. 12 months later he played for Australia!!
* Campese. Same old same old. Doing everything but not doing anything too well. He looks like a shadow of the player he was in first grade during the Carney suspension. He tried hard enough, but seemed to look frustrated most of the time. Seemed to be the real on-field leader though. His kicking game was reasonably ineffective.
It was such a strange career. By the end of 2007 he had probably played about 80 reserve grade games and 20 first grade games and seemingly going nowhere. Then for the next three years he was in the top 10 players in the comp and had probably been in the system for 8 years and barely had an injury. He got hurt in the final in 2010, played 8 games in the next two years then was a shadow of himself in 2013/14 and his ending was very sad.
Really quality person and a star who shone brightly but for a short time.

Re: Canberra Raiders to return to NSW Cup
I think he was a perfect example of how honing your trade against men is how it should be done.
You’re right though. That spectacular rise in form was something out of the box. I’ve never seen, and doubt I ever will again, a more dominant attacking playmaker than him in his prime. He was a born footballer and truly poetry in motion at his best. And pre knee injury he was the best defender for a half I have ever seen (in the modern set up where they’re specialist fringe defenders)
I still think the angriest I’ve ever been (rep footy wise) is how he was treated by NSW. Retaining Wallace and Farrah but dropping him (for a past it Barrett IIRC) was disgusting. In his prime he was absolutely built for Origin. If he had have had the chance of playing with an even mediocre halfback he could have been brilliant.
And going on with that. I can only imagine what might have been if he had have had the opportunity to play some of those prime years with halves and hookers better than Herbert/Buttriss/Waddell/McCrone/Williams. The team could have been amazing even with a steady partner like Sezer as Austin and Wighton got the chance at.

Re: Canberra Raiders to return to NSW Cup
Met Terry after the GF loss, just walking out of the ground with all the other punters after the ceremonies etc. He was a class act even then- obviously smarting from the loss but generous to fans (both teams), could raise a laugh, optimistic, just very open and genuine. Could see why he was a good leader.Bay53 wrote: ↑January 29, 2021, 8:54 pm There were some interesting comments from Lime Green re Terry Campese which I agreed with at the time. 12 months later he played for Australia!!

Weird wasn't it. Like he had all that up his sleeve somewhere as potential but had been plodding along really in his first few goes in FG. Then Carney goes down and it's like he just mentally makes the decision it's now or never and drags every ounce of talent out. Confidence? Grew with responsibility? Stopped waiting for "more talented" guys to make the plays?julian87 wrote: ↑January 30, 2021, 7:09 am .

Yep, Campo had all the physical tools but often seemed to play without patience or a feel for momentum.
Suddenly things clicked for him. He matured and became a leader in the absence of Carney. He ditched the incessant need to boot mid-field bombs all the time, and just worked on building field position and focussed on his running game. He was always an elite defender.
At his peak he was arguably better than Wighton in most aspects, and that's saying something.

I was trying to remember who White was. It certainly wasn’t Brett White. Steve McLean had big raps but never made it to first grade, played quite a lot in local footy. I think he might be related to Jordan McLean.Seiffert82 wrote: ↑January 30, 2021, 10:18 am 1. Goodwin

BJ Lawrence went and captained coached Woden Rams after that and got them to a prelim final in 2009 when generally they were cellar dwellers. He then gets a shot at the Titans and goes on to play a grand final for Manly. One of the great stories in RL I reckon.
Fenno was only 19 then and was picked for Jersey Flegg but played reserves that day. He still eligible for 20s the next year and of course captained our Toyota Cup premiership in 2008.
Re: Canberra Raiders to return to NSW Cup
With the lists restricted to 30, you couldn’t do what Campo did. His first game in first grade was my first Raiders game after I moved to Canberra. Round 2 2004. I think he played three games in 2004, a handful in 2005 and then none in 2006 in Matt Elliott’s last year as coach. Played the whole season in reserve grade. Started to get his chance in 2007 playing 13 games which must have been close to the limit for being eligible for reserve grade finals but as you can see from the comments, none of us were overly impressed.BadnMean wrote: ↑January 30, 2021, 8:08 amWeird wasn't it. It was in 2008 under Neil Henry that he took control.
Re: Canberra Raiders to return to NSW Cup
Interestingly it’s just been introduced as of yesterday that post rd 11 players outside the top 30 can play NRL again. I think this is a sensational move.

Re: Canberra Raiders to return to NSW Cup
Wighton is a little bit quicker/more dynamic near the line, just a devastating package 10-15m out. But Campo was a powerful runner too, with some good footwork. Strong. More reliable boot than Jack- both long. Wighton lays guys out in a tackle with a bit more hurt more often but yea, Campo could sometimes and just rarely missed or made the wrong decision. Better passing game on Campo is the main difference. He made worldbeaters out of some journeymen outside backs.Seiffert82 wrote: ↑January 30, 2021, 10:16 am Yep, Campo had all the physical tools but often seemed to play without patience or a feel for momentum.

Yeah if you're not the hot young star half at 21 now it's hard to learn the trade and work your way up to firsts.Bay53 wrote: ↑January 31, 2021, 7:22 am

Got criminally screwed over by the NSW Origin selectors though.

That squad tracker is great. Only thing that would make it better if we had year of birth so we can see who is eligible for junior comps in 2021 and 2022.
Will be interesting to see how many are retained all the way through. By my calculations that is 68 players.

Just rehashing the Campese chat I just listened to a podcast with Andy Raymond. They were talking hot runs of form and Hayne obviously came up. But Raymond just couldn’t help himself and spent a minute or 2 rehashing just how good Campo’s rise was.
I really miss Raymond as a Fox reporter.

Hearing that the Raiders NSW Cup team will have a trial at Seiffert Oval against Monaro Colts on Friday night. Time to be confirmed.
The NSWRL Country Championships will return to an open age competition in 2021: https://www.nswrl.com.au/news/2021/01/1 ... r-players/
So I expect that will form part of Monaro's preparation for that competition which kicks off on February 27.
The NSW Cup squad was in camp last weekend down the South Coast. Looks like a good time had by all.

We are also playing a trial tomorrow after noon at Kirkham Oval v Wests Tigers. The Tigers are listing it as a Jersey Flegg trial so I would imagine we are only playing the squad that was preparing for Flegg but now included in NSW Cup.
Re: 2021 NSW Cup
I should also add that trial against Monaro Colts was played in the end last weekend.
I think it was on and off again but in the end it was on.

Re: 2021 NSW Cup
The Raiders NSW Cup team didn't play a "trial" against the Monaro Colts last weekend, as I understand it... but did have an opposed training session or "scrimmage" with them last Friday night at Raiders HQ.
Re: 2021 NSW Cup
Canberra Raiders NSW Cup team lost their trial at Camden on Saturday. The Tigers’ report indicates it is their Jersey Flegg trial... and presumably the Raiders didn’t field any players from their top squad or key players eligible for SG Ball (we don’t really know as the Raiders released no team list):
FULL TIME: Wests Tigers 24 defeated Canberra Raiders 8
HALF TIME: Wests Tigers 12 led Canberra Raiders 8
Wests Tigers Under 21s kicked off 2021 with an impressive 16-point win against Canberra Raiders in a trial match at Kirkham Oval. It was a strong start for the Raiders, who spread the ball well to both edges inside the opening 10 minutes to score two quick tries. However, Wests Tigers went up another gear after 20 minutes, taking complete control of the match to run away with an impressive result.

Re: 2021 NSW Cup
Rumours have it Meads being called in NSW cup for this weekend’s game against Bears ? Can anyone confirm? I heard he was outstanding last weekend in Camden.
Re: 2021 NSW Cup
We'll hopefully find out later today!

Re: 2021 NSW Cup
Yes sorry Keaton Meads , as I mentioned by all reports he was outstanding last weekend . Also sounds like he’s a great kid off the field as well after reading article re camp couple of weeks ago .
