Re: The Cricket Thread
You’d think IND will be without Vihari and definitely Jadeja for the Gabba.

Re: The Cricket Thread
This is boring as all get out.
Re: The Cricket Thread
Yeah a win for India here would have been ideal (and a great win for them) but a draw is still a result where they'll be leaving the SCG feeling far the happier of the two teams.
Aussies have blown an opportunity here - funny when you think they bowled India out for 36 two tests ago.

Re: The Cricket Thread
Pretty impressive how they have weathered the early bouncer storm and bedded in.
They've copped a battering this tour but stood up remarkably.

Is it just me or does the worse the pressure gets, the worse Paine does in the field / captaincy wise?

Re: The Cricket Thread
Possibly true, except Smith. I'm just referring to his shocking captaincy in the closing moments of that Ashes test a couple of years back with Stokes etc.

Re: The Cricket Thread
Too many drop catches from both teams. That's why nobody could take 20 wickets and win the test.

Re: The Cricket Thread
He scoured the Shield until he found the only 'keeper with a lower FC batting average than Tim Paine and then he went right for the jugular.

I think a prerequisite of Test selection is being able to make your state team first.

Re: The Cricket Thread
The SCG pitch was definitely the most disappointing of the series so far.
Re: The Cricket Thread
Yep. Been very average for over a decade now. Far too bland a pitch.Azza wrote:The SCG pitch was definitely the most disappointing of the series so far.
Re: The Cricket Thread
Yeah Melbourne has done a great job bringing the life back into theirs, SCG needs to do the same. Used to be a great wicket. Didn't really deteriorate that much and seemed slow. This is not to take away from India's batting yesterday.
Re: The Cricket Thread
They could play on that for the next week and it still wouldn't deteriorate.
Awful pitch, hopefully it gets a poor rating like the MCG did

Re: The Cricket Thread
I don't think much blame goes to the pitch when all 4 results were just about in play in the final session Day 5 (Jadeja's injury notwithstanding). Especially when the bowling team drop 4 clear cut chances and the opposition end up 5 down... Innings scores between 340 and 240 all game... Wickets shared by quicks and spinners... Quick enough to break a bone for the quicks and spun enough for Lyon to be the key man on Day 5 (got 2 and had 2 or 3 dropped that would have opened the gate to the tail and further wickets).
I'd say that wicket did it's job.
It didn't break up -quite- as much Day 5 as some Sydney wickets but it was quite a wet, cool summer leading into the game.

Re: The Cricket Thread
The SCG isn't a drop in pitch. They've deliberately avoided it due to the lifeless nature of the old drop ins (Adelaides is ok though). It's the same old Sydney pitch- just the weather affected the prep minimally, Oz dropped a bunch of clangers, India batted well and Starc was bog ordinary for mine. Maybe they all looked a tiny bit flat.

Re: The Cricket Thread
Tough critics. The game was in the balance on day 5. All 3 results were possible.
There were runs available for batsmen who got in.
There was enough in the pitch for the quicks who bent their backs. Swing, both regular and reverse, even if it didn't last long.
Spin late.
Australia should have won. Abbott and Paine's drops are the reason they didnt. None of the catches are tough enough that pros shouldn't take them. And at worst, Paine's drop of Vihari late was down Warner's throat at 1st slip.
Re: The Cricket Thread
Not arguing Australia should have iced the game. Neither team took 20 wickets though, and with the quality of the bowling attacks (and the average nature of Australia's batting line up overall) that says something to me. This is not the first year the SCG has been like this either, as has already been pointed out.
