He was poor at times. He was lazy getting back in the line which put him in a terrible position to tackle Gagai which meant he wasn’t able to tackle front on which gave Gagai space.

Realistically he should be at 5/8.

Post by The Nickman »

What was the final score? I didn’t watch it because that Queensland team *checks notes* “smells terrible”, was a team of “Queensland residents”, and was “a **** dog average side”

How much did we lose by? Fergus??

The players (particularly NSW) looked flat and disinterested.
Credit to QLD for sparking the contest in the second half..
The whole game was very lethargic and devoid of any atmosphere..
Look forward to when crowds return to normal and Origin is in the middle of the season because that was awful...

I am not convinced that he can’t be a great origin centre. Greg Inglis often played 5/8 for the Storm and the full back for Souths but was one of the all time great origin centres. I think Jacko can be that.

Inglis never won a Dally M at 5/8.

Cleary, Wighton, Gutho, Tupou ... some of their worst games ever..

I blame Freddie for picking Gutho over Lomax, silly move.

Cleary looks hungover from the long season.

Tupou was a lazy sack.

Jackie boi ... lumbering Jack.

Agree. Before the game I looked at the teams and said if you were picking an Australian side from those teams the only two Queenslanders I would pick would be Munster and Papalli.

Freddy got way too cocky. He was a good coach when we were nowhere and trying to come back but the squad he picked for this series was a joke. Thanks Fred but let a real coach take over now.

And Gagai? That would be about it, though. Which must say something about NSW's disappointing performance.

Yeah not the greatest Origin game. A five-eighth and a full-back in the centres? Likewise with wingers; the Fox was playing on the 'wrong' wing, I wonder if he'll be back on the left for the second game. Cleary and Keary failed to impress, DCE grew into the game, Brimson can be pleased with his debut.

PJ, I think QLD has got the pashun and spirit and all that is left for NSW is a little adversity.

I still think it’s stupid that the game was on a Wednesday night when they had the golden opportunity for three Saturdays in a row, but that’s the NRL for you

Not that Ch9 have any real benchmarks for Saturday night ratings.

Queensland Maroons stun NSW Blues to claim State of Origin I

Never write Queensland off. It was message a lot of NSW Blues - both past and present - had spouted all week. Maroons prop Josh Papalii did a lot of work early as the banana benders had plenty of early possession.

QUEENSLAND MAROONS 18 (AJ Brimson, Xavier Coates, Cameron Munster tries; Daly Cherry-Evans 3 goals) bt NSW BLUES 14 (Josh Addo-Carr 2, Damien Cook tries; Nathan Cleary goal) at Adelaide Oval. Referee: Gerard Sutton. Crowd: 25,218.

In some ways yes but you have to remember when this was agreed the NRL were fighting tooth and nail to retain their TV revenue so were in no real position to not do what Channel 9 wanted.

Also remember many said there would be no crowds this year - this was always set up to be primarily a TV event - the advantage being on a Wed night is there is nothing around the country it competes against. It was probably unlucky for the NRL that the first game ended up being against the farce that is happening in the US but like a good car crash, very hard to look away from.

DCE had a very good second half, as did the whole Qld team.

Personally, I thought Jake Friend played VERY well, but would've given it to Gagai... like always.

I actually would have given it to Capewell, but the other 3 mentioned were also good.

Munster and Papa had good but not great games. I thought Arrow had some good moments.

GH Player of the Year style I'd go:
3 Gagai
2 Capewell
1 Friend

DCE was very busy but not as effective. Definitely not MOTM.

NSW I'd go:

3 Tedesco
2 Cook
1 Saifiti*

If you listened to the call Paulo got a lot of credit for the work Saifiti did.

Tedesco dropped a sitter of an offload that would have put qld to bed.

IMO the game wasnt that bad, we looked good early despite defending about 20 tackles straight off two terrible calls we didnt concede rolled upfield then scored.

We just went a bit sideways and to individual to often whereas QLD stuck to their game plan through out.

Realistically though we lost on conversions.

What I thought was interesting was listening to phil goulds pro qld commentary after being lambasted for being biased with his penrith commentary... even billy slater was kinder to NSW then him.

Our centre pairing doesnt work imo... why isnt crichton picked as well?

The sad thing about jacks performance was his defence his strong suit wasnt much chop.

Also is cam murray injured as he is better then both corder and three fingers.

Jack appeared a bit over enthusiastic in defense I thought last night. His timing was off and he was planting his feet trying to get good contact when he should have been sliding (or perhaps he could have committed earlier to a man). He def looked out of place at centre.

The NSW team overall was **** though. We just were not up for it when QL lifted in the 2nd half. Fittler should have had them watching replays all camp of 2003-2016.
