Canberra Raiders V Melbourne Storm

Friday 16 October, 7:50pm EDT, 6:50pm Queensland
TV coverage: Nine, Fox League Channel 502
Radio: ABC, 2CC, Mix 106.3
Weather: Sunny. Patchy fog in the west in the early morning. Light winds becoming northeasterly 15 to 20 km/h in the early afternoon then becoming light in the evening. Chance of any rain: 0 per cent. Min 15 Max 29

The Canberra Raiders have qualified for their third Preliminary Final in five years, and now head to Brisbane for a clash with the Melbourne Storm.

Last week: 2020 Finals Week 2. Canberra Raiders 22 - Sydney Roosters 18. Nothing ever avenges a loss in a Grand Final. But when the Raiders defeated the Sydney Roosters last Friday night at the Sydney Cricket Ground - denying them the opportunity for a "threepeat" - it was a little piece of revenge for the 2019 Grand Final. Coach Ricky Stuart wisely says that "revenge" was never a motivation for the team. Last year was last year he says. But for the fans, that little bit of revenge sure felt good.

More on Finals Week 2: As I saw it

Team news: The Canberra Raiders still have a long injury list - and despite some bumps and bruises, they have named the same top 17 players that beat the Roosters. Tom Starling and Sia Soliola have been listed in the starting line up. Jordan Rapana (sternum) and Josh Papalii (ankle) have been cleared, while Ryan Sutton (MCL) is a surprise inclusion on the extended bench. The only change for the Storm is the inclusion of Tom Eisenhuth on the bench in place of Chris Lewis. Cameron Munster (knee) has been named at five eighth, while Dale Finucane (calf) has been included on the reserves list.

Late changes: The Raiders omitted Ryan Sutton and Michael Oldfield from their squad on Thursday night, with Sam Williams and Matt Timoko remaining on the extended bench. Ryley Jacks and Chris Lewis were cut from the Storm's squad, leaving open the possibility that Dale Finucane could be a late inclusion.

History: The Raiders have won only 14 of 46 matches against the Melbourne Storm, for a 30 per cent win rate. Canberra has won four of the past 10 clashes between the clubs - and three of the last five. The Raiders broke a five game losing streak with a memorable 22-18 victory in Bleak City in Round 22 in 2019. The Raiders had two players sin binned in the first half and trailed 18-0, before scoring 22 unanswered points. It was the Storm's worst ever collapse. Canberra followed up with another stunning, 12-10, victory in Week 1 of the 2019 finals - with a John Bateman try in the final stages delivering a match winning lead.

Earlier this year, the Raiders produced a very convincing 22-6 victory over the Storm in Melbourne in Round 3. The Storm were last start winners against the Raiders, 20-14, in a controversial clash at Canberra Stadium in Round 9. Both teams scored three tries, and an incorrect Bailey Simonsson sin binning proved very costly for the Raiders. These two teams have never previously met at Lang Park.

Form: Raiders: WWWWW
Storm: WWWLW

The Storm won their Week 1 finals clash with the Eels, 36-24, earning a week's break. They have also had recent wins over the Rabbitohs (22-16), Cowboys (36-20) and Tigers (50-22) - but suffered an unexpected loss to the Dragons in the final round of the regular season (30-22). The Raiders are on a five game winning streak. They've had two wins over the Sharks, as well as victories over the Dragons, Warriors and Roosters.

Betting: The Storm are $1.47 favourites, while the Raiders are paying $2.75. The Raiders have 6.0 points start in the line betting.

Stat attack: In 2019, the Raiders started to play a style of football that is not too dissimilar to the Storm. Both teams now have a "defence first" approach, and both had attack that revolved around their dummy half. The Raiders attack has evolved following the loss of hooker Josh Hodgson for the season, due to an ACL injury. But there are probably more similarities in their style than differences.

The Storm has been a just a little bit better than the Raiders in both defence and attack in 2020. The Raiders conceded only six points per match in four of the first five rounds. Their defensive record slipped a little over the course of the season, but the Raiders' defence is still the strongest part of their game. They currently rank third in the NRL for fewest tries conceded per game, behind they're behind the Storm on that statistic. The Raiders rank seventh for fewest running metres conceded and fifth for fewest line breaks conceded, on average - but the Storm rank second on both those counts. Only the Rabbitohs miss fewer tackles on average than the Storm (Raiders rank in the middle of the pack), but Canberra has generally been very good at shutting down offloads. They rank in the top four teams for fewest ineffective tackles (Storm ninth).

The Raiders attack has been pretty average this year, but it has improved towards the back end of the season. They rank seventh for tries scored per match - but the Storm rank second, and have scored 10 more tries than the Raiders, despite having played one fewer match. The Storm and the Raiders are the kings of dummy half running (ranking first and second in the league). But the Storm are more expansive than the Raiders in attack. The Raiders love to barge down the middle. They rank second in the NRL for one pass hit ups (Storm 14th) and second last for general play passes (Storm third). Only the Panthers are better at controlling possession than the Storm.

The Raiders have scored more tries in the middle of the field (30 per cent) than any team. But the Raiders like to go to their left in attack even more. The left edge has scored 45 per cent of the Green Machine's tries. And that's the side to attack the Melbourne Storm. Their right edge has conceded over half of the tries scored by their opposition (less than 15 per cent in the middle).

2020 Season record: Raiders 16 and 6 (5th, +128)
Storm 17 and 4 (2nd, +258)

Attack: Raiders 23 points and 4 tries scored per match, ranked 7th on tries scored
Storm 27 points and 5 tries scored per match, ranked 2nd on tries scored

Defence: Raiders 16 points and 3 tries conceded per match, ranked 3rd on fewest tries conceded
Storm 14 points and 2 tries conceded per match, ranked 2nd on fewest tries conceded

Possession: Raiders 50 per cent, Storm 52 per cent

Completion rate: Raiders 78 per cent, Storm 78 per cent

Running: Raiders 1677 running metres from 184 runs (14 dummy half runs), 167 kick return metres, 555 post contact metres per match
Storm 1732 running metres from 184 runs (15 dummy half runs), 203 kick return metres, 582 post contact metres per match

Tackle breaks: Raiders 31, Storm 29 per match

Line breaks: Raiders 4, Storm 5 per match

Try assists: Raiders 3, Storm 3 per match

Line break assists: Raiders 2, Storm 3 per match

Offloads: Raiders 9, Storm 10 per match

Kicking: Raiders 611 kicking metres from 22 kicks per match
Storm 492 kicking metres from 20 kicks per match

Tackling: Raiders 355 made, 27 missed, 14 ineffective per match, 90 per cent tackle efficiency
Storm 329 made, 25 missed, 15 ineffective per match, 89 per cent tackle efficiency

Running metres conceded: Raiders 1454, Storm 1273 metres per match

Errors: Raiders 11, Storm 11 per match

Penalties conceded: Raiders 5, Storm 5 per match

Penalties awarded: Raiders 5, Storm 5 per match

Set re-starts conceded: Raiders 5, Storm 4 per match

Set re-starts awarded: Raiders 4, Storm 3 per match

Key match-ups:

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Ryan Papenhuyzen Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad ended the 2019 season with 11 tries, fourth in the try scoring stakes amongst his fellow fullbacks. He finished second in the NRL, to James Tedesco, for total running metres and finished first for kick return metres. He was in the top 10 players for running metres per game, and first for kick return metres per game amongst the regular fullbacks. He made five in goal escapes, more than any player in the NRL. He was seventh in the NRL for total tackle breaks - and first at the Raiders. It was a brilliant break out season. Nicoll-Klokstad has found 2020 a little tougher than 2019, but last week he played one of his best ever games in green. He has seven tries, seven line breaks, three try assists, 69 tackle breaks, 185 average running metres and an 81 per cent tackle efficiency this year.

Ryan Papenhuzen also had a fine debut season with the Storm in 2019, making eight starting appearances in the No. 1 jersey. But he's really made a mark in 2020. This year, he has nine tries, 14 line breaks, 14 try assists, 67 tackle breaks, 194 average running metres and an 82 per cent tackle efficiency rate. On 2020 form as a whole, Papenhuyzen probably wins this match-up. But if CNK puts in another performance like he did last week, then it'll be a very close battle between these two.

Image

Jack Wighton and Cameron Munster Cameron Munster and Jack Wighton are two of the best five eighths in the competition. But Munster's 2020 season has been somewhat impacted by injury. In 16 appearances this year, Munster has produced four tries, eight try assists, seven line break assists and seven forced line drop outs. Jack Wighton shared in the Meninga Medal and Canberra Raiders Fans' Choice Player of the Year this year - a winner for the first time. He's now got 13 tries, eight try assists and eight line break assists for the year. Wighton is very solid in defence - with an 89 per cent tackle efficiency rate (Munster 85 per cent tackle efficiency). Both these players are match winners, but Wighton is in an absolute purple patch of form. He wins this match-up for mine.

Image

George Williams and Jahrome Hughes English half George Williams has had a fine first season in the NRL. He's produced seven tries, 14 try assists, four line break assists, 11 offloads and 16 forced line drop outs. His short kicking game is first rate, producing the majority of his try assists. He's also averaged 70 running metres and 229 kicking metres per game. Jahrome Hughes is no slouch either. He has seven tries, 13 try assists, six line break assists, six offloads and seven forced drop outs. He's averaged 77 running metres and 165 kicking metres per match. Both are pretty solid in defence (Williams 88 per cent tackle efficiency, Hughes 85 per cent). I've got Williams ahead of Hughes in this match-up.

Image

Josh Papalii and Jesse Bromwich These two props might not face each other directly, but they are key forward leaders for each team. Josh Papalii shared in the 2020 Meninga Medal and the Fans' Choice Player of the Year - the fourth time he's won both awards. This season, he's averaged 14 hit ups for 152 running metres and 31 tackles per match. He's also scored five tries and produced 22 offloads and 41 tackle breaks. He hardly ever misses his mark in defence (97 per cent tackle efficiency). Bromwich has posted 12 hit ups for 115 running metres and 25 tackles per match. Papalii is the best prop in the game in my view, and wins this match-up.

Our tip: The Storm are very warm favourites in this match. They've had a week off and will be fresh. They will no doubt be driven to give Cameron Smith - who is reportedly set to retire - an opportunity to play one more game, in the Grand Final. The Raiders will again be forced to travel on the day, while the Storm are at "home" in south east Queensland. But it is one game apiece so far in 2020, and we know the Raiders have the formula to beat the Storm. And they did it last year in a final, on Melbourne's home ground. It should be one hell of a battle between the two forward packs. But if the Raiders' pack can replicate the performance that they put in against the Roosters, it will go a long way to securing a win. I said this last week, and I'll say it again. Raiders fans should be confident the Green Machine can do it in this game. Raiders by six.

What they're saying:

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart: "I'm proud of our players, how they've handled this season. Nobody knows from outside our inner sanctum at the club, how hard it was for us at the start of the season. So where we've got today nobody gave us a chance to, outside our own. I remember saying after the last game when we beat the Roosters that nobody has given us an opportunity to show what's underneath the jumper. They're not just a team of footballers these guys, they're more than a team. Win or lose next week we have had an unbelievable season and we are in there punching again."

Said this in the other thread, but this isn’t the amazing side of years gone by. Win the battle in the middle with footwork, fast play the balls and safe offloads (Smith is actually a good target for post contact metres), then swing left to get at Hughes/Lee/Vunivalu. Bomb and grubber to the same side, and make it harder for Papanhuyzen to get into the game, smash him on the tackle 2 hit ups and drive him back. Defensively, it is imperative we present a straight line at all times. Their speed is their main asset, from broken field play - need to be careful on kick chase and after an error with the loose ball.

and finish faster. In the first half last week we didn't waste many opportunities. We scored points when we had the chance. We will need that again tonight.

Yeah, we ended SBW's NRL career last week and put a fork through the Roosters hopes of a threepeat.

How good would it be to back that up with saying adios to Cameron Smith and the Storm...the bloke and club that tormented our team for a decade.

Reminds me of the night in 2007 that we put the final nail in Andrew Johns' career. Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke.

Let's get it boys.

We are legitimate premiership contenders for the second consecutive year, in this competition up to our eyeballs.

Probably the only reason we aren't even-money or even favourites here is because Storm had a week off.

I think if we win this, we are going to win it all this year. The hunger from last years GF loss will take us home.

Compared to the two finals I saw live last year, there’s a weirdly non-footy vibe in the city today, but I guess that’s the effects of covid and two out of town teams. Total jersey count: Storm 1 Raiders 0.

Getting very nervous now, but can’t wait. Sell out crowd (about 39,000) and a beautiful night forecast. First Viking clap for the rest of the family (who are bit more of bandwagoners). Just need to top off it with the win. Raiders by 10.

Well done to the people of Brisbane if that ends up being the crowd. 39k for a neutral game in these times is a great credit to them.

Getting very nervous now, but can’t wait. Sell out crowd (about 39,000) and a beautiful night forecast. First Viking clap for the rest of the family (who are bit more of bandwagoners). Just need to top off it with the win. Raiders by 10.
I still find it quite incredible that the QLD Government was happy to increase the capacity of Suncorp to 75% while still denying an NRL team living in the COVID bubble from travelling up the day before the game an undertaking all the additional protocol measures.

It’s ridiculous, my mum came up to Brissy to visit me last night from Canberra (awesome timing since she loves the green machine too), all she has to do is get off the plane, answer a few generic questions and she’s free to roam around QLD as much as she wants. Yet the Raiders, who will help bring in a lot of money to QLD tonight get treated like they have the plague? Sheesh.

Starting to get nervous about this game. Seems quite surreal being in another Prelim and knowing that we're good enough to win, but hoping that last week didn't take too much out of the tank.

We have a winger playing in the centres, a backup dummy half rotation and a pack of front rowers who have miraculously been the key difference between us and the opposition at the business end of the season, despite our horrific injury toll in that position.

In all honesty, IMO the Prelim is the worst game of the season to watch. If you win, its a relief, but the job isn't done; if you lose it seems like such a waste of a season. It's even worse being against the Storm. I can't wait for the game to be over to be honest.

It's beyond all comprehension...but also an opportunity not to be missed by Ricky in firing up the boys.
