Canberra Raiders set to sign Penrith Panthers fullback Caleb Aekins

The Canberra Raiders are set to sign Caleb Aekins on a one-year deal to further bolster their backline. The Raiders have also signed North Queensland Cowboys winger Elijah Anderson on a train-and-trial deal.

They've all-but finalised a two-year deal with winger Jordan Rapana, with just a few loose ends to tie up around the second year of the contract extension.

More interested in Elijah Anderson tbh. Played 20s Origin last year, big fast thing, good build for a winger.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

According to a Canberra Times article today we have just signed him to a train and trial arrangement.

We are certainly working towards redeveloping our backline.

Interesting... I vaguely remember Aekins, he seemed like a talented guy, definitely worth a crack... Also like Julez, interested in the Anderson fella now having made some enquires, sounds like the sort of player that if he develops, could be the style of player that we are missing. Happy to roll the dice on the guy, we unearthed Simmo on a similar trial and train deal, and he's at worst a good depth player

I've seen a bit of him, and he's got a bit of a CNK feel about him IMO. Safe and not prone to make mistakes, but can hold an attack back a bit. Unless it's planned to use him as cover for CNK I don't see where he'll fit - would've been nice to have a player with a different skill set.

Rapana also a train and trial after unwanted by Force and Brumbies once upon a time.

Off our confirmed or reported squad for next year we have the below ‘reserves’ (I’ll name currently injured players in this team for reference, any one of them that makes first grade automatically is replaced by a current first grader).

1. Aekins
2. Simo
3. HSS
4. Timoko
5. Niko / Anderson
6. Frawley
7. Sam Williams
8. Ryan James
9. Hodgo (will switch with Starling when fit)
10. Emre
11. O’Donnell
12. Horse
13. Sutton

Now there will obviously be some of these guys getting into the first grade side, but the point is we currently have enough troops for x2 very strong forward packs, back lines and a very serviceable backup 9,6,7,2 combo.

Great recruiting, and what is looking like a very very strong squad, with the ability with minimal recruiting to form our own, Raiders reserve grade team.

I'd assumed he'd had Croker, Rapana, Scott, Valemi, CNK as his starting FG back 5 so unlisted here...

Correct BadnMean.

The point was not really to create a 2020 lineup, more to point out that we currently have a 17 man squad about to play another prelim, and that list is people who ARENT in that squad, and the sort of strength we have in depth next year. Scott was a straight switch for Cotric.

That’s an insane level of depth next year, considering there will be quite a few players who have been integral parts of this finals run who won’t make first grade next year.

OFFICIAL: Canberra Raiders sign Penrith Panthers back Caleb Aekins on one year deal

The Canberra Raiders have signed exciting young Panther Caleb Aekins for the 2021 season. Aekins, 22, is part of the Panthers NRL squad and has played 12 NRL matches for Penrith including 8 this season.

“I’m really excited about joining the Raiders next season, they’re a great club and they have a record of giving players an opportunity, Aekins said. “Before that though I’m still committed to the Panthers and I’m ready to go if I’m needed before the end of the season.”

Welcome to the Green Machine. Good to get backups who you know can handle the step up to NRL if called upon.

Welcome, Caleb.

Don't know much about you but I hope you succeed as a Raider
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

As much as I don't see him shifting our starting side I'm surprised he couldn't land a gig with more years at another club. You'd think Barrett would have pulled this guy into the dogs system on a 2 year deal, or Manly who just let their best backup go (Elliot). Turbo spends a fair chunk injured.
Makes me think his management approached us instead of the other way around.

I see this recruitment as part of a longer term plan to extend our premiership window and keep the Raiders as a competitive team at the pointy end of the competition ladder for several years to come.
Great strategy and planning IMHO.
...
Also nice to see that we can attract quality players (even if younger) to the club now that we have been performing well for the past couple of years.

Essentially, yes. He's no threat to Charnze imo. He's not a wingers elbow either really. But he can handle filling in at FB ok without having to then shift our wingers around etc.

Might be a nod that if Charnze is going to kill himself and take 25 carries and run 250m every week (bless him), then in a 26 round season, there's really going to be a week or two where we need to save him from himself.

I think it's a sign the club isn't completely sold on Adam Cook either. Good to have depth though - may as well dip into the Penrith well, especially while they struggle to retain all their youngsters.

Are we putting him into the David Milne category of fullbacks?

Good to have depth. Never know when we get struck down in a big way.

Cook doesn't seem big enough to me. Hopefully he (and Curtis for that matter) bulk a little this offseason

Subloo has signed with Redcliffe Dolphins.

I'd say if we needed a FG half it'd be Sammy coming in, then Frawley or a Hoppa/Whitehead type option. Rapana can actually kick ok (that 40:20!) I reckon he'd be a decent running 5/8 also.

Football clubs aren’t always transparent about their signings and release decisions, and we can’t really be
expected to be psychic.
