Mystery solved.

Looks a tad shady though, might be hard to spot at night...
I’ve heard he’s a shadow of his former self.

I am not surprised at all that we have done this. It just follows the long line of Ricky's view that you win games by not playing games.

There is form for this:
- We only play one trial and often play our senior players for a few mins
- We totally disregard the Nines - to the point of picking the bare minimum that is required under the rules and then having them on the bench not setting foot on the field or literally for 2 seconds.
- We are talking about not having a 2nd tier team next year - getting them to train a bit more, maybe play a bit of local footy which is slow motion compared to the NRL or even NSW Cup.
- We rested half a team in the final round last year.

I am not totally against points 1, 2 and 4 (point 3 I am totally against but there is a different thread for that) but it is what we do, and I guess in recent years it has proved to be successful.

Yeah but imagine the scenes if the perfectly plausible scenario happens whereby this reserve grade side earns us a top 4 spot and we hit the Panthers fresh off a week off.

I reckon not resting guys that need it and still ending up 5th is a worse outcome, if we wanted to rank them. Real shame that game wasn't first.

This is crazy with a top 4 spot potentially on the line

I understand a few rests but wholesale resting, I don't get it

Very smart move by Stuart.

I was just thinking about it..Sharks actually have absolutely nothing at all to play for. They are 8th regardless if the result so i suspect they wont be at full strength either.

And we go on to win the premiership by denying the Roosters a 3-peat, beating them 48-0 in the grand final in front of 41,000 mostly Raiders fans.

Nope.

Everyone is saying we will be better off being 4th because we will get a guaranteed 2nd game.

RUBBISH!

We will be better off coming 5th.

We will win Vs Sharks round 1 and if we don't then we don't deserve to be there.

We will then play the lowest ranked loser which will be Parra (against Panthers). If we come 4th we would have played Penrith round 1 and likely gotten beat.

I would much rather a slow build with a win over the Sharks and confident we could beat the Eels at Bankwest.

Then we get into a prelim and it's anyone's game.

5th is good.

Statistics don't agree with you. This finals system has been in for 8 years, therefore there have been 16 games in Week 2.

13 times out of 16 the top 4 team that has lost the first week has won the second week.

I know it is a different sport, but the AFL has had this finals system since 2000 so there is 20 years of data. In the first 14 years (2000-2013) the top 4 team won week 2 of the finals 26 times out of 28. 2014 was a total outlier in that two top 4 teams went out in straight sets and since there have been a few exceptions including the Western Bulldogs winning the premiership from 7th and GWS making the Grand final last year from 6th but again much better to finish top 4.

90.625% of teams to make the top 4 in the NRL have played a preliminary final.

5th is no where near as good as 4th.

You blokes saying 5th is better than 4th are fair dinkum in fairly land. I'm in a bit of shock actually. Thought he'd rest a few but gee... it's a huge call. Rick will look like goose of the year if Parra lose...

1. 5th is no way better than 4th.
2. Parra won't lose so it's irrelevant.
3. Were not beating the sharks this week, however it's irrelevant.

Amazing team list, glad Ricky finally made a right call on team selections :P Also I have to apologise to Sam Williams for honestly forgetting that he existed and leaving him out of my original team suggestions :P

Interesting you can confidently say a team that lost 38-0 to Souths (who have been poor since) definitely won't lose. You have more faith in them then me.

I am going to enjoy every minute of this week.

I agree with the notion that this year, 5th is better than 4th. I wrote a few weeks back that wholesale resting was likely for this game. Why show Cronulla what we have this week, so they can focus on shutting us down and ambushing us Wk 1 of finals? Plus, the risk of injury is just too great. The game in all likelihood is the deadest of rubbers. There is nothing to gain from the match, but plenty to lose through injury etc.

Smart move in my book. Hopefully Adam cooks us up a subloome piece of flake for dinner as well.

That has a lot more to do with the quality of the teams usually in the top 4 then any magic of the position. Also our goal isn't a preliminary final, it's a grand final.

I think anyone saying 5th is better than 4th has lost their minds
But I also don’t think this is the worst idea, I don’t think parra will lose, and I think we’ve got a **** ton of guys who need a break... it feels to me half the team is playing with serious niggles that need attention every game

So whilst this is not what I’d have done, I think there is logic to it
And I’m super pumped to see this team play haha

What is the plan here? Are we gambling that our actual second string side will be good enough to beat the Sharks? Or have we given up on the top 4? Or are we taking the gamble that Our best chance of winning it all is from 5th with a well rested team and momentum going into week 2 of the finals?
It seems so. It's taking a guaranteed freshen up in round 20 vs the unknown and fairly faint chance of a rest in Week 2 finals. Huge call!

Under this system 100% of teams who lose a preliminary final miss out on the Grand Final.

Records are made to be broken but I reckon that one might hold up a bit longer.

Preliminary final is pretty important I reckon.

Yeah while I'd love/hope for parra to lose, and I'm a Benji fan, I can't see them actually losing to the tigers side that's been named.

Don't Sportsbet provide tens of millions of dollars to the NRL for something called 'wagering and sponsorship'. V'landys will not like like this and I reckon he will see it as a stunt. The Panthers are guaranteed first place and they have not gone down this track, naming their star 6, 7 and 9. Storm have rested Cameron Smith and a number from their backline but nothing like the Raiders. To be honest, I'm disappointed the Raiders have done this. Sticky has built a 'tough but fair' culture here and I don't see this as part of that. I wonder how many beers it took for this to seem like a good idea.

Melbourne have rested their entire backline and half of their forwards.

I'm happy with this, keen to see the young guys have a crack. I've never even heard of Adam Cook.

4th would be ideal but the Tigers are pea hearted so it's a moot point. Penrith are riding a special wave, so just because they aren't doing it doesn't mean we should. We're on a different wave.

2. Parra won't lose so it's irrelevant.
3. Were not beating the sharks this week, however it's irrelevant.
Interesting you can confidently say a team that lost 38-0 to Souths (who have been poor since) definitely won't lose. You have more faith in them then me.
I think it says more about the lack of confidence I have with the Tigers.
It's all irrelevant as Ricky has shown his hand with the team selection and I don't mind it.
At the end of the day all roads lead to having to beat the Roosters and the Storm....whether it's in a GF qualifier or GF, we'll have to do both. When you boil it all down, that's what it comes to.

Melbourne can afford to do that. They're 2nd and can't finish any higher or lower than 2nd...
