An International architect wont see anything different to a local guy. Dorsnt change the problem or cost. The only difference is, they might have actually been involved in building one that way before.
That's the point though they have likely done something similar before. Surely this isn't a unique situation in the whole world of city stadium construction. How to fit a 30k stadium (that's still small by international standards) on a finite sized block where they have to adjust a road to make it work.

Cost is always a factor obviously. Hopefully, the Bruce site has a recaptured sale possibility which could assist to offset costs in some way. Fed infrastructure money/Private sector money could be crucial too etc.
Im 100% sure its been done.
However, Im 100% sure, that adds significant cost. Bankwest cost $360 million US. I wouldnt be surprised if moving/ covering the road costs and extra $50-100 million. Thats huge.

A new Canberra Stadium?

Matt wrote: September 9, 2020, 6:00 am Civic is the best location, BUT, to get the product we all think we need, the cost will be significantly more. The site is too small, thus bridging Parkes Way is the only way to solve it, and that comes at a cost - not to mention, that the stadium likely needs to be raised a storey about the site to compensate.

Epic has the space. Has the tram. But its run down more Bruce. Also further from most of Canberra, even if its closer to the highway. Time wise, might be equidistant, monaro highway vs lights and roundabouts of Parkes way
Mitchell is a long way from the geographic centre of Canberra (which is just north of the lake, near Civic). Bruce would make much more sense. The tram is irrelevant to most Canberrans... but even when it is fully built, Mitchell is at the northern end of that network. Civic will be the centre of it.
Thats exactly what I said GE.
But Civic isnt a big enough site. You cant build a stadium without space to do it.
Sorry, I was misunderstanding the bit about equidistant... and now I’m now sure what that part means, but in any case, i personally think Mitchell is the worst of all three options by a big margin, due to the location.

If it’s not at Civic you might as well just do one of the Bruce tart-ups they mooted a few years back.

Fact is this is a once in a generation project, either spend the money on it to do it right so it becomes a centrepiece project at Civic and has all of the associated economic benefits that go with that, or put lipstick on the pig at Bruce.
Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel is just the train that's about to hit you.

I’ve often wondered whether it would have been better to build the stadium at Rugby League Park in Braddon before the recent redevelopment had happened. Would have been a great location.

Unfortunately the ACT Government has sold off too much inner city land to property developers and had restricted the space it has for major community infrastructure in the city such as a sports stadium.

Looking at the satellite imagery I still can't figure how they say it won't fit. Also look at the Gabba, a couple of its stands actually hang out over the road. I also find it amazing they can't find another space in or around the city to do this project. Just make no sense to build elsewhere.

I'm sure if they buy the AIS sites of the Federal government they can arrange a deal with a developer to pay them for the future use of them and use the funds to build a new stadium while still using GIO.

For Bruce to work it would have to have be a mixed use site, encouraging business and offices to come there.

Otherwise it will just be the same as what's there now, which is basically a dead zone for 5/7 days a week.

I wouldn't trust this government not to screw it up by letting developers build housing and then get caught with little to no stadium work performed.

Best bet all-around would be to put pressure on the Barr Government by voting for alternatives. This constant **** about why they can't build or renovate a stadium won't end if they get another term. If they have to make a deal with say the Belco Party, which is headed by a former local sports minister, then we're a damn sight better placed to getting what we want.

Wouldn't have fitted at Northbourne Oval either apparently. Not to mention the local residents objections.

I still reckon they should build it in Commonwealth Park near or on Stage 88... and shift the infrastructure for Floriade and other events further along the lake. The ACT doesn't own that land... but the MCG is stuck in the middle of a park, it would be pretty much the same.

I just saw this on the Canberra Times site. Although Barr has asked for lots of support for infrastructure, there is no mention of a stadium.

The closest we get is: "A Parkes Way corridor study could investigate removing Coranderrk Pond, a redesigned intersection, the removal of Wendouree Drive and a new service road and car park". Looking at the map, I doubt that this has much to do with exploring a Parkes Way site for a new stadium.

They build bigger and more complex stadiums in finite spaces all the time over in Europe, because they have to - there's no choice. If they can do it, we can do it, and certainly looking at that land potentially available it can be done. If Parkes Way has to be shifted then so be - build it under or shift the thing sideways, there's loads of room where that dual carriageway is.

This is all just Barr being piss weak again and making excuse after excuse, and our club + NRL not doing enough to tug on the strings.

Too right Afgtnk.

Mr Barr is spending hundreds of millions to raise London Cct so that Light Rail stage 2 can traverse the gradient to Commonwealth bridge. For a journey to Woden that will be slower than the existing Bus journey.

It’s all about priorities. And Barr only prioritises the stadium as a talking point near elections.

I believe I may have posted something similar previously, however - behold!

Image

Build the southernmost lane out into the park, redirect what was the northern lane onto the former southern lane. Hey presto, an extra 40-50m!

If you at any point run out of space and want to go over the road:

Image

You could also build the east and west grandstands in tiers to increase the capacity while keeping the fans relatively close to the action.

It can be done, but if you just look at the existing site boundaries and scratch your head, you aren't going to get very far. Think outside the boundaries, or three-dimensionally. How expensive could it be, really, to build a few hundred meters of road - for a single direction, mind - and redirect the other side onto the freed-up existing road?

If we can find hundreds of millions of $$$ for the bloody tram, we can afford to slightly shift a damn road in order to prevent our new stadium from being built in the boondocks.

Sterlk, I like your plan. However, speaking from experience you could knock down all those absolutely edit buildings at the west end of Constitution Avenue, let Snowtown cash in on a bunch of new tenants (they're building a new twin 6 story set of towers there) and have ample room left over for a stadium on the whole pool/office building site. It might mean a bit more traffic in front of the casino. Like anyone cares.

Agreed. Knock down those buildings including the convention centre. Make a super centre which includes both a stadium and a convention centre in the one footprint :-)

Couldn't it also be built where the car park and that waste of a project "Futsal" Park thing is across the other side of parks way? Seems there's room on that corner of Commonwealth Ave and the exit to parks way.

It probably could... but the City to the Lake plan has the prime lake front set aside for apartment buildings... sale of land no doubt aiming to fund some of the infrastructure.

Have a look at Landsdowne Rd in Dublin’s. The northern stand is like 10 rows and the rest of the stadium is huge. Surely they could do something similar at the pool site?

Knock down Manuka oval and move the AFL/Cricket ground to Epic, then build the stadium there. Fixed.

I was there a couple of weeks ago. Part of the car park (I think where the futsal courts may have lay) has a sign on it saying it's land to be release for future, so I assume what you're suggesting is true. Further down they've developed the area closer towards the bridge that loops around as a pedestrian friendly zone with outdoor gym, seats, small jetty.

Seems to be plenty of land still available though. Either way, Barr doesn't have a valid excuse.

**** location. Residential area, gets way too built up, nowhere to park, limited PT.

City is the best and only location a new ground should be built.
