I actually though Havilli was very good tonight. He is pretty limited in what he can do (but he does that well) whereas tonight there were a couple of good kicks and more eyes up footy.

Havili wasn't the reason why we lost tonight. He had an OK game.
We need to get more out of our forwards. I didn't think Tapine made much impact when he came on or much run metres compared to Leota. I've been waiting and waiting for him to come good but just got that !@##$ from him in the Grand Final when he let in that Sam Verrills try turning his back. CHN didn't have much impact but it may take some time.

Time to bring CHN into the back row. Our only try scoring option is Papa, a front rower at the moment! That describes the state of our attack. CHN could be our attacking weapon if used right!
Cotric is just completely wasted on the wing! So frustrating.

Rickys team selections was the biggest mistake
.. he should of been smarter than Batemans ego and put tapine on kikaus side.. don't think Bateman tackled him once at first attempt... which is ok coz hes 20kg lighter. croker and Scott got man Handled by opposing centres.
LETS BE FAIR DINKUM !
WE ARE NOT GOING TO WIN A COMP WITH CROKER AND SCOTT IN THE CENTRES!
Cotric doesn't look happy he had 7 runs? He should be playing centre.

We have 3 consecutive games against plodding sides.
Perfect opportunity to make some improvements to our attack.
As was evident last night, I don’t think our ugly and scrappy performances are going to be enough against the top sides.

It can work as evidence by the win against Roosters. Problem is the margin for error is small. Panthers game best example where we let in 2 soft tries early. The grinding style has pros and cons. Last night the cons were evident. However let's not forget this style nearly delivered our first Premiership in 25 years.Mickey_Raider wrote: ↑August 9, 2020, 9:39 am We have 3 consecutive games against plodding sides.

I hear what you're saying but any drastic change style at this late stage could throw us completely off track. I do agree that this is a good opportunity for some small adjustments. Personally I'd like to see some more direct play up the middle then a quick shift late. That's when our backline seems to click better.

Re: 2020 Rd 14 V Broncos: Teams and Previews
I Agree with those who think we just need to tinker with straightening our attack, fighting for fast play the balls and having more bodies in motion.
We don’t need a big overhaul and we probably don’t have the attacking personnel for a more flamboyant style.

I am not advocating drastic changes. In fact I have been a pretty vocal proponent of accepting that provided our defence is sound - the grinding, ugly style can take us very far, as it did last year.
However I also maintain that we do need some moderate Improvement in attack.
I also realised that our defence has not actually been that watertight against other contending teams.
We have conceded significant points against Manly, Knights, Storm, Roosters, Eels and Panthers.
So if we don’t improve in attack, at the very least we are going to need to prove we can contain such sides to below 14-16 odd points. Which we aren’t doing at the moment.

That was my point really. Margin for error is small with the grinding style. For it to work we need to reduce those defensive errors and take the opportunities in attack when they present. We did neither against the Panthers.Mickey_Raider wrote: ↑August 9, 2020, 10:19 amNorthern Raider wrote: ↑August 9, 2020, 10:01 amIt can work as evidence by the win against Roosters. Can we sign staggs!?
Re: 2020 Rd 14 V Broncos: Teams and Previews
I actually think we looked better last night when Starling was on. I was getting frustrated Havilii played so long.
Going forward I'd be looking at starting Starling and moving him closer to playing 80. Havilii on the bench as he can either be involved in the middles rotation or cover hooker if Starling gasses.
We can't keep giving up leads. We need to start on the front foot with our most threatening team.
1. Nicoll-Klokstad
2. Cotric
3. Croker
4. Scott
5. Rapana
6. Wighton
7. Williams
8. Papalii
9. Starling

11. Haraweara-Neara
12. Whitehead
13. Bateman
14. Havilii (Baptiste if injured)
15. Lui
16. Sutton
17. Young
I actually like some of @Dusty ideas about Bateman to centre but being realistic I think that change is too radical for Ricky to actually ever make. His single definging characteristic is *stubborn*.
You can swap Sutton and Tapine if you'd rather Tapine as impact middle but I just think we need to start well, then let the bench do their job. Not ask the bench to make back leads. The game these days rewards the team on top, it is very, very hard to make it back once you get down in these rules imo.
CHN will end up our edge anyway- let's get him there.

It's not stubborn to keep Bateman out of centre. It's just the right thing to do. No one should have him at centre unless it's during a game because of an injury. He's not the "lateral speedster" he was over 2 years ago when he was last playing there.
Your centre options are Oldfield, HSS or keeping the status quo.
I think Papalii is looking a little gassed so I've moved him back to the bench for this game only. Should come on after 20. We really need to get away from the idea that him playing the entire first half is the way to go. We've got guys on the bench that can play big minutes. They're fine first graders. They don't need to be carried during the season. Save that kind of thing for the finals.
Starling is in the starting side for the injured Havili. Baptiste on to the bench for high energy either side of the half.
CHN must be getting close to the point either this week or next that he comes into consideration for a start. Got to pull the trigger on his fitness at some point. Gassing him each week will get him there faster.
The big question there is having him on the left or the right. He's a player that prefers the left but then you're breaking up that Whitehead / Wighton left edge combo. The cynic in me thinks that might leave us with no points.
If you have him on the right you're moving a defender like Bateman away from players that benefit from his work.
I think you plonk him on the left next week and let the combination build over the next 6 weeks. The left has already got that play set up where Whitehead runs a good line back against the grain and for all Whiteheads positives I think CHN hitting the ball at speed is a bigger attacking threat. That leaves you with Whitehead on the right and Bateman at lock.
Long term I think Whitehead on the right and CHN on the left is where it's headed next year.
