Canberra Raiders V North Queensland Cowboys
Saturday August 1 5:30pm
Townsville Stadium
TV coverage: Fox League Channel 502
Radio: ABC, 2CC, Mix 106.3
Weather: Partly cloudy. Mostly sunny morning. Slight (20 per cent) chance of a light shower in the afternoon. Winds southeasterly 15 to 20 km/h tending east to southeasterly 20 to 30 km/h in the morning. Chance of any rain: 20 per cent. Min 13 Max 25

In Round 12, the Canberra Raiders face one of the biggest "road" trips of the year, when they travel to the new Townsville Stadium for a meeting with the Cowboys. The Raiders are shooting for three wins in a row in Townsville, something they've never achieved before.

Last round: 2020 Round 11. Canberra Raiders 18 - South Sydney Rabbitohs 12. It was gritty, it was gutsy. It was played in slippery, dewy conditions, and then pouring rain. Both teams were stricken by injury, and there was more suffering to unfold for both sides during the match, disrupting them further. In the second half, the Rabbitohs were camped in Raiders' territory for set after set after set. But Canberra's rock solid defence held South Sydney scoreless for the 40 minutes. And the Raiders took their very limited opportunities to secure the victory.

More on Round 11: As I saw it

Team news: The Raiders have a very long injury list, with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad the latest to join the ranks of the players on the sideline. He suffered a compound dislocation of his finger against the Rabbitohs. Fortunately, there was no broken bone or ligament damage, so he should be out for only 1-2 weeks. Jordan Rapana will replace CNK at fullback, with Curtis Scott (infected arm) to start at centre. John Bateman will return from shoulder surgery in the second row, with Hudson Young to be shifted to lock. Kai O'Donnell and Harley Smith-Shields have dropped out of the top 17. Corey Harawira-Naera will make his debut in green from the bench. Josh Papalii and Joe Tapine have been given exemptions from the Queensland Government, so as to allow them to enter Queenland without influenze vaccinations.

For the Cowboys, Connelly Lemuelu will return at centre, with Mitch Dunn dropping back to the bench. Jordan McLean will also return from injury at prop. Josh McGuire was initially named at prop, but he was found guilty of a dangerous contact charge by the judiciary on Tuesday night and has been suspended for this match. He'll be replaced by Francis Molo. Five-eighth Daejarn Asi was ruled out with a minor knee injury on Wednesday, so Mitch Dunn will move into the halves. John Asiata and Ben Hampton were also added to the bench on Wednesday, with the NRL granting an exemption for Emry Pere to be added to the reserves.

Late changes: On Friday evening, Matt Frawley and Kai O'Donnell were omitted from the Raiders' extended bench, with Sam Williams and Harley Smith-Shields remaining in the squad of 19. The Cowboys cut Emry Pere, from a squad that had already been reduced to 20 on Wednesday.

History: The Raiders have won 24 of 43 matches against the North Queensland Cowboys. However, 14 of those wins came in the Cowboys' first decade in competition. In the most recent decade, the Raiders have won seven matches between the clubs, the Cowboys 12. The Raiders have won nine of 21 games played in North Queensland. This will be the first game played between the clubs at the new Townsville Stadium.

The Raiders have won three of the past five matches played between the clubs. In Round 8 of 2018, the Raiders produced their first win in Townsville since 2006 - the 18-8 victory breaking a nine game losing streak in the far north. Canberra backed it up in Round 18, with the Raiders defeating the Cowboys 38-12 at Canberra Stadium. In 2019, the Raiders again won in Townsville, producing a 30-12 victory - before suffering a 22-16 loss in Canberra in Round 11.

2019 Round 11: Canberra Raiders V North Queensland Cowboys

2019 Round 4: Canberra Raiders V North Queensland Cowboys

2018 Round 18: Canberra Raiders V North Queensland Cowboys

2018 Round 8: Canberra Raiders V North Queensland Cowboys

Form: Raiders: LWLWW
Cowboys: WLLLL

The Cowboys are on a four game losing streak, losing head coach Paul Green along the way. They lost 24-12 to the Sea Eagles in their last outing - with losses to the Panthers (22-10), Roosters (42-16) and Eels (42-4) before that. Their most recent victory came against the Knights (32-20) at Townsville. The Raiders are coming off impressive back to back wins over the Roosters (24-20) and Rabbitohs (18-12). They've also had recent narrow losses to the Eels (25-24) and the Storm (20-14) - as well as a win over the Dragons (22-16).

Betting: The Raiders are $1.31 favourites, while the Cowboys are paying $3.50. The Cowboys have 8.5 points start in the line betting. The Raiders' odds have shortened over the week.

Stat attack: This is a battle between fifth (Raiders) and 12th (Cowboys) on the ladder. The Raiders' attacking record in 2020 is still lagging, but their ranking for tries scored has moved up to ninth. The Cowboys have scored three more tries than the Raiders this season, ranking equal seventh. That slight advantage is reflected in most of the attacking statistics - running metres gained, kick return metres, post contact metres, line breaks and offloads. Surprisingly, given the likes of Jason Taumalolo in the Cowboys' ranks, the Raiders make more tackle breaks.

The Raiders have a distinct advantage in defence. Only the Storm, Eels and Roosters have conceded fewer tries than Canberra (a total of 24). The Cowboys have the second worst defensive record in the league, conceding 30 more tries than the Green Machine. They have let in more than 40 points twice - against the Eels and the Roosters. The Cowboys haven't missed many more tackles than the Raiders, or made many more ineffective tackles. But they give up more metres - and no team has conceded more line breaks (66).

Canberra adopted a strategy of kicking often and long, kicking to the corners, in 2019. They rank third in the NRL for total kicking metres this year. In contrast, the Cowboys rank dead last for kicking metres gained - although they do kick less than the average team. The Cowboys put in more attacking kicks than the Raiders (Cowboys rank fifth, Raiders 13th). The Cowboys also rank equal fourth in the NRL for forced line drop outs (20) - while only the Broncos have fewer FDOs than the Raiders (13).

2020 Season record: Raiders 7 and 4 (5th, +41)
Cowboys 3 and 8 (12th, -82)

Attack: Raiders 19 points and 3 tries scored per match, ranked 9th on tries scored
Cowboys 20 points and 4 tries scored per match, ranked equal 7th on tries scored

Defence: Raiders 15 points and 3 tries conceded per match, ranked 4th on tries conceded
Cowboys 27 points and 5 tries conceded per match, ranked 15th on tries conceded

Possession: Raiders 50 per cent, Cowboys 51 per cent

Completion rate: Raiders 78 per cent, Cowboys 77 per cent

Running: Raiders 1654 running metres from 185 runs (14 dummy half runs), 155 kick return metres, 543 post contact metres per match
Cowboys 1674 running metres from 177 runs (11 dummy half runs), 192 kick return metres, 580 post contact metres per match

Tackle breaks: Raiders 30, Cowboys 24 per match

Line breaks: Raiders 3, Cowboys 4 per match

Try assists: Raiders 3, Cowboys 3 per match

Line break assists: Raiders 2, Cowboys 3 per match

Offloads: Raiders 8, Cowboys 8 per match

Kicking: Raiders 628 kicking metres from 22 kicks per match
Cowboys 473 kicking metres from 20 kicks per match

Tackling: Raiders 363 made, 31 missed, 14 ineffective per match, 89 per cent tackle efficiency
Cowboys 339 made, 32 missed, 17 ineffective per match, 88 per cent tackle efficiency

Running metres conceded: Raiders 1482, Cowboys 1533 metres per match

Errors: Raiders 12, Cowboys 11 per match

Penalties conceded: Raiders 6, Cowboys 5 per match

Penalties awarded: Raiders 5, Cowboys 6 per match

Set re-starts conceded: Raiders 4, Cowboys 4 per match

Set re-starts awarded: Raiders 4, Cowboys 4 per match

Key match-ups:

Nick Cotric and Kyle Feldt They may not face each other directly, but these two wingers are probably the two teams' most damaging outside backs. Kyle Feldt is equal second on the NRL top try scorers list in 2020, with 10 four pointers. Only Sione Katoa and Maika Sivo have scored more (11). This season Feldt has averaged 143 running metres per game, and made 18 tackle breaks and five line breaks. Nick Cotric has just signed a big deal to join the Bulldogs in 2021, but he's not been diverted by the contract dramas. He's lifted his form in 2020, and ranks fourth in the NRL for tackle breaks (59), behind James Tedesco, David Nofoaluma and Kalyn Ponga. He has posted six tries, seven line breaks, one try assist and averaged 115 running metres per game.

Josh Papalii and Jordan McLean Josh Papalii recently said he's not been at his best, after an honest discussion with coach Ricky Stuart. Since then, he certainly has been. He's been a marvel. Against the Rabbitohs last weekend, he made 148 running metres and 42 tackles. In 2020, he's scored four tries, averaged 161 running metres, made 27 tackle breaks and averaged 33 tackles. Cowboys prop Josh McGuire has been suspended for this match, but North Queensland will have Jordan McLean back from injury. He hasn't played since Round 7. In six appearances in 2020, he's averaged 122 running metres, 10 hit ups and 22 tackles per game. He's a huge player, standing at 196cms and weighing in at 118kgs... so this will be a clash of big bodies. But if big Papa plays, big Papa should win this match-up.

Hudson Young and Jason Taumalolo Jason Taumalolo is one of the 10 NRL players - and the only lock - on $1 million a season... according to the weekend's "The NRL Rich 100" list. It is no surprise, given that he ranks second in the NRL for running metres, behind fullback Clint Gutherson, and first for post contact metres (944). In 2020, he's averaged 224 running metres and 34 tackles per game, produced 39 tackle breaks, eight offloads, and scored one try. With the return of John Bateman, Hudson Young will move to lock. He's settled in well since returning from a lengthy suspension in Round 6 - playing every minute since Round 7. He's averaged 64 running metres and 36 tackles per match in 2020 - and posted a 91 per cent tackle efficiency rate. He produced an impressive 49 tackles against the Rabbitohs - and against Taumalolo, he'll be looking for a repeat.

Our tip: The numbers suggest the Raiders are deserved favourites - with defensive resilience being the key difference. The Cowboys played their first game under caretaker coach Josh Hannay last week - and the team couldn't lift for him. It is tough for them, as they are missing some key personnel. However, the Raiders are more adversely affected by injury - and the Raiders have risen to the challenge in recent weeks. It is a very tough "road" trip for the Raiders - as they'll need to travel to Townsville and return to Canberra on the same day. That's a least six hours in a plane. Add in bus trips and transfers, that adds up to a lot of travel time. That could take its toll. The Raiders could also suffer a bit of a "let down" after tough matches against genuine premiership contenders in the past month. But if the Raiders bring the same intensity in defence that they showed against the Roosters and Rabbitohs, they should be too strong. Raiders by 6-12.

What they're saying:

Elliott Whitehead on coach Ricky Stuart: "It's just something that he drives into us. He believes in the squad that he's got and the young kids that keep coming in keep stepping up and doing a great job for us. He's got confidence in playing the young kids which gives us a lot of belief in their ability. If we keep playing like we're doing and keep getting results we'll be alright."

That injury list is crazy.

When is Team List Tuesday?
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

Can't believe the ref even went to video on that try. And he watched the put down 400 times even though he wasn't even asked about it, they'll do anything to try and screw the Raiders. Same old story, refs will do anything for Storm, the Rooters and... NQL?

All good wins are based on defending well and grinding out the first 20 minutes. That's what I'm looking for. You can't expect the opposition to roll over and leak like a sieve.

There's total logic behind it. Sharks severely under strength. Brisbane with a superior roster on paper. Soft draw with limited travel etc etc.

... except Broncos

All sorts of nasty scenarios are playing in my mind!
The problem will be the plane getting in... if it’s not already on the ground.
Absolutely! Hopefully the plane was already on the tarmac, otherwise we are in big trouble!! I imagine it’s a charter flight which could help.

It really is an inconsequential selection but I feel that bit warmer and safer having Sam Williams as the reserve half rather than Matt Frawley. 90 or so games over 7 seasons with the club it just feels more like home with him floating about hah.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

Let's put a cricket score on the cows to boost that +/-. Hopfully Curtis proves us all, me expecially, wrong.

We've dropped behind the Sharks on the ladder. Need to make games like this count if we want to go top 4.
