Good signing for us, but like a number of our talented 18 year olds, some will make it some won’t. However with Esera, Mooney, Clarkson and now Rushton, I would be surprised if we don’t end up with at least 1 or 2 really strong first graders.
I can also understand some resentment from England with this signing though. Williams, Bateman and Sutton had all delivered trophies to Wigan before they left, if Australian clubs are going to start taking 18 year olds, one has to wonder if the English will ask why should they bother with their academies.

Whoa little buddy. Let's focus on the Poms beating the Kumuls first.MrPosh wrote:I know there's no question of NRL v Super League in terms of quality, but I doubt there's a higher standard of junior football anywhere than Wigan.Botman wrote: ↑June 24, 2020, 8:40 pmHaas has come through a significantly higher level of competition..Haas is also a freak athelete. Like with all 18 year old signings, i'd be surprised if he plays FG. Most 18's signed dont. No one has he has to wait even a year to play, let alone years, if he's good enough he'll play, but given the step up and transition period and that he's a forward, it's a more realistic expectation to think if he's good, he's probably a year or two away.
If he exceeds that, that's A-ok with me.
If there were three more Wigans in England you lot would never win a test match again.

You should get over to the Coronavirus thread Nickman!
People were disparaging you, and so I went into bat for you because... well... that’s my job dammit! Going after you when you were right was also a little daft, but probably still fun.

Canberra Raiders move will be life changing, says Wigan Warriors Harry Rushton
Harry Rushton is leaving Wigan at the end of this season to join George Williams and Ryan Sutton at the Raiders – despite being 18 and having not played in the first-team here yet.
“It’s a big move and a life-change but I didn’t have to think about it for too long,” he said. “Their coach Ricky Stuart is a legend of the game I have always admired. I know the coaching will be top-standard, and the playing standard is great as well. I’ll be able to learn from experienced internations so it can only help my career.”

Canberra Raiders sign young English forward Harry Rushton to three year deal
The Canberra Raiders can confirm the signing of second rower Harry Rushton on a three-year deal starting 2021. Rushton, 18, will join the club from the Wigan Warriors at the commencement of the 2021 pre-season and will be part of the Raider’s Top 30 squad. He'll start off playing in Jersey Flegg.
“Harry is one of the most promising young backrowers in the United Kingdom,” Peter Mulholland said. “We’ve had a lot of success with the Englishmen that we’ve brought over and Harry is another player who we see as having a lot of potential and who will fit in with our organisation.

Re: Canberra Raiders sign young English forward Harry Rushton
I've only seen Harry play 2 or 3 times when I have been and watched our juniors/reserve grade stuff but like someome mentioned on this thread Wigan fans are not happy with this as we were fully expecting him to play a decent amount next season in the main side.
He is a big lad, carries himself well and has a decent turn of speed. Games I have seen him play I thought he was playing 13 the amount of times he got his hands on the ball.
I very much doubt he will play much if not any first grade next season but hopefully a year in the lower leagues when that is allowed and he will break into the 1st XIII
Its crazy how this little town keeps churning them out.

Harry Rushton’s arrival in Australia for 2021 season in some doubt due to COVID
Australian immigration officials have warned Canberra it may be forced to abandon the contract of English and Wigan star Harry Rushton next season through COVID. It’s unclear if his deal would be postponed or cancelled. The Raiders wanted him in Australia in November.
“The last five English players haven’t been a problem but we are concerned about whether we can get Harry into the country,” Don Furner said. “Harry might be a victim of COVID. If it does work out that way then we would have to look around to fill that spot and we have time to do that. With COVID, it’s unlikely now we will be able to get him here because of the advice we have received. It’s problematic.

That’s a great shame. Hopefully they can work something out. Get V’Landys onto it. The Bulldogs got Luke Thompson here.

The dogs got Thompson in ok.....
I could understand if Harry had 2nd thoughts but I don't get why immigration would say no to Harry but let Thompson in and Tom Hanks..

Re: Canberra Raiders sign young English forward Harry Rushton
It might be less to do with getting him here - surely he can quarentine - and more what to do with him whilst he's here (unless the article says otherwise - the Telegraph won't open over here).
I know some of Thompson's problems have been because he's on his own, unable to socialise of live with anyone outside of the club.
The Raiders hopefully wouldn't want to bring over an 18 year old under those conditions.

Re: Canberra Raiders sign young English forward Harry Rushton
It seems it is basically because there’s priority being given to work to get Australians back from overseas and the processes of hotel quarantine... and the limits on numbers. It’s advice from the Raiders’ immigration expert.MrPosh wrote: ↑September 18, 2020, 7:23 am It might be less to do with getting him here - surely he can quarentine - and more what to do with him whilst he's here (unless the article says otherwise - the Telegraph won't open over here).

The club is very good at looking after young players who are away from home. I don’t think there’d be any issues there.
Re: Canberra Raiders sign young English forward Harry Rushton
Hmmm interesting... i guess we cant be too critical of things if the reason is the priority being given citizens returning home but hopefully the club can work something out with the immigration officials.
Would be a shame to lose a young talented player over this.... but if it is not to be, ill bet decent money this will just be put off a year, i cant imagine Harry's desire to come and test himself in the NRL or the Raiders desire to bring him here will change in 12 months time when hopefully this COVID situation is behind us

Re: Canberra Raiders sign young English forward Harry Rushton
Curious. I hope he'll make it out next season. If he can get a run in Wigans firsts he'll be well set up.
Does that leave the club with suddenly 1 extra top 30 spot open?
It would make sense to get an outside back in- we are choc full of middles.

Re: Canberra Raiders sign young English forward Harry Rushton
It's all about state caps on international passenger arrivals, which is currently around 4,000 per week across the country. Pre COVID, international arrivals were 800,000 per week.
Oddly, in the first week of September there were 30,000 international passenger seats that arrived in Australia, of which only about 13% (or ~4000) were full due to state restrictions.
There are still a good number of empty seats coming back to the country, the states just won't allow them to be filled. There is still a queue of Australian citizens stuck overseas trying to get home, which will be the priority before guys like Rushton get here.

Playing for Wigan tonight.
Re: Canberra Raiders sign young English forward Harry Rushton
Fair to say whoever scouted him deserves their paycheck.
Tough game for, effectively, Wigan reserves against a strong St Helens team, but his defence was very strong.

Just had a look, and he didn’t get a spot in the last game day squad for the ‘Coral Cup’ semi on the weekend. Went down to Leeds.
But he has been named in the 21 for this weeks match against Warrington.
Not sure if this is a good sign or not, they might be giving him minutes and naming him in squads because they believe he will be there next year.
Re: Canberra Raiders sign young English forward Harry Rushton
he made 41 tackles in the loss to st Helens who had a decent pack, I was reasonably impressed. Hopefully get him out here but just so stacked for forwardsCoastalraider wrote:Just had a look, and he didn’t get a spot in the last game day squad for the ‘Coral Cup’ semi on the weekend. Re: Canberra Raiders sign young English forward Harry Rushton
I can’t realistically see him being anywhere near first grade next year, but having him around the club is good for development.
The 2 main issues I see are:
-getting into the country with the covid issues
-enticing him to come given we don’t actually have a development team for him to play in yet.
I’d imagine at this stage the smartest thing we could do is ‘loan’ him back to Wigan or another SL club next year and let him develop off the bench in Super League.
Is it Huddersfield we did a development partnership with?? With Wolford??
