Canberra Raiders set to raid Wigan again, interest in signing young gun forward Harry Rushton

Canberra Raiders are preparing to raid Wigan Warriors again, having lined up up-and-coming forward Harry Rushton. League Express understands they are keen to sign the 18-year-old forward Rushton, despite the fact he has yet to make his professional debut.

Rushton, who is billed as a loose forward who can also play in the backrow, is regarded as one of the best young English players in the game.

Are we thinking this is Bateman 2.0... or at least Bateman before he came into grade?

No. I mean maybe. Who knows. But no, the expectation cant be that this kid will be arguably the best backrower in the world.
You might think he has that potential but you cant plan for that and think this IS that. This is more like Guler, when we nabbed him from the Rabbits... some kid with some potential and we'll see, but lets stack our club with we'll see lottery tickets

That’s actually a really good comparison.

Give it a couple of years and see where he is, but he’s not playing first grade for a while.

Im going to state the obvious but this dude is clearly not our john bateman replacement (should he leave). We lost a stack of depth in forwards when we lost JJ, luke bateman and murchie. This will in some way go about filling the gap left behind by these guys. While he has no first grade experience seems to have a stack of upside

Not a replacement but definitely a sweetener IMO. Like when we got Vainikolo from the Warriors for releasing Pongia.

Sorry, talking him up before its time. :P
I think thinking of him as a Guler great potential guy is probably a better way to approach it.

Because he might be developed into a top first grader?

We sign development players from New Zealand all the time. The air fare is likely a bit more expensive this time, but the theory is the same. Get a junior rep player on the books (outside the top 30) and let them develop around our first grade squad.

I like it. Bringing over a guy when he’s young means you’re not dealing with homesickness when he’s in first grade. He either leaves before cracking first grade or he acclimatises and stays.

I reckon it’d be easier in some ways to support a guy adjusting to a new country when he doesn’t have the pressure of needing to perform immediately.

He might be in the team in 12-18 months. By then Hors and Guler will be 3 year, 50 game players. Seasoned Fg'ers and maybe looking for pay rise next time around. It's always optimal to have a boom kid providing service above their pay grade on the squad.

Good idea to bring in quality 18 year olds. Sometimes they pay off. If Young doesn't shape up, then he's got a path straight into the team. He might get some games around Origin either way.

Some kids are just ready at that age- Cotric, Papa, Daley, Jack, Toots (Snr and Junior) just off the top of my head. At 6'3 and and 97kg he'll likely be ready for the physicality soon enough.

If I was a Wigan fan, this better be part of a Bateman return deal or Raiders will be shedding fans over there lest right and centre. It's starting to look personal. I suppose they are traditionally the strongest club (or thereabouts) so it's just they happen to have the best talent to poach.

Canberra Raiders sign young English forward Harry Rushton to three year deal

A young forward who has yet to play a first grade game is the latest Englishman to join the Canberra Raiders. Up-and-coming Wigan forward Harry Rushton, just 18, has signed a three-year deal with the Green Machine today.

immediately ornext year? I'm guessing next with no lower grades action.
Wonder if we could loan some kids over to the UK for experience?

Haas has come through a significantly higher level of competition..Haas is also a freak athelete. I have no idea what this guy is athletically. But im going to guess he's not on Haas's level (very few people walking this earth are)

Like with all 18 year old signings, i'd be surprised if he plays FG. Most 18's signed dont. No one has he has to wait even a year to play, let alone years, if he's good enough he'll play, but given the step up and transition period and that he's a forward, it's a more realistic expectation to think if he's good, he's probably a year or two away.

If he exceeds that, that's A-ok with me.

I know there's no question of NRL v Super League in terms of quality, but I doubt there's a higher standard of junior football anywhere than Wigan.

If there were three more Wigans in England you lot would never win a test match again.
