Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers
Saturday June 13 7:35pm
Campbelltown Stadium
TV coverage: Fox League Channel 502
Radio: ABC, Mix 106.3
Weather: Partly cloudy. Areas of fog in the morning, mainly in the west. Slight (20%) chance of a shower at night. Light winds becoming northerly 10 to 20 km/h in the afternoon. Chance of any rain: 30 per cent. Possible rainfall: 0 to 0.4 mm Min 8 Max 20

The Canberra Raiders head back to their new "home" ground of Campbelltown Stadium in Round 5, for an away clash with the Wests Tigers.

Last week: 2020 Round 4. Newcastle Knights 34 - Canberra Raiders 18. The Raiders fell back to earth with a thud in Round 4 - defeated convincingly by the Newcastle Knights at the Green Machine's "home" ground of Campbelltown Stadium. The score was probably a fair reflection of the difference between the teams - but a case could be made it flattered the Raiders. The Raiders did not have their head in the game from the opening whistle. The Knights won the physical battle in the middle, and that allowed Kalyn Ponga and Mitchell Pearce to dominate. The Raiders' right edge, in particular, struggled in defence. Newcastle scored six tries, with Best and former Raiders winger Edrick Lee both scoring doubles. That is twice as many tries as the Raiders conceded in the three opening rounds.

More on Round 4: As I saw it

Team news: Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has named the same top 17 which faced the Knights on Sunday. Ryan Sutton (calf) has been included on the extended bench in place of Kai O'Donnell.

Tigers coach Michael Maguire, however, has responded savagely to his team's loss to the Titans, with Benji Marshall sensationally dropped. Robert Jennings, Luke Garner, Oliver Clark and Billy Walters are other casualties. Tommy Talau has been named on the wing, Josh Reynolds at five-eighth, Zane Musgrove at prop, Chris Lawrence in the second row and Russell Packer and Michael Chee-Kam have been included on the bench.

Late changes: Corey Horsburgh (gastro) was ruled out of the Raiders squad on Friday afternoon, with Sia Soliola to start at lock and Ryan Sutton coming onto the bench. Kai O'Donnel has been brought into the Raiders' squad with NRL permission, whIle Michael Oldfield and Matt Frawley have dropped out of the extended bench.

The Tigers omitted Corey Thompson and Billy Walters from their squad of 21 on Friday evening.

Milestone: This match is the 400th NRL game to be coached by Ricky Stuart, 155 of them for the Raiders. He has also coached 130 games at the Roosters, 91 at the Sharks and 24 at the Eels.

History: The Raiders have won 18 of 37 matches against the Wests Tigers, a 49 per cent win rate. Including games played against the Wests Magpies and Balmain Tigers prior to the joint venture, the Raiders have won 51 of 94 contests. That 54 per cent win rate is significantly boosted by the 75 per cent win rate against the Magpies.

For a long time, the Tigers were a bit of a bogey team for the Raiders. However, that's been changing. The Raiders have now won eight of the past 10 matches between the clubs, and four of the last five. The Raiders won both contests in 2019. They produced a comprehensive victory in Round 13 last year at Western Sydney Stadium, holding the Tigers scoreless (28-0). They backed that up with a 20-12 win at Canberra Stadium in Round 18.

The Raiders have won just three of 10 games played between the clubs at Campbelltown Stadium. However, the Raiders produced a big 48-12 victory in the last match between the teams at the venue, in 2018.

2019 Round 13 Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers

2018 Round 22 Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers

2018 Round 15 Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers

Form: Raiders: LWWWL
Tigers: LWLWL

The Raiders have posted a 3 and 1 start to 2020, while the Tigers are 2 and 2. The Tigers have beaten the Dragons (24-14) and Sharks (28-16), but suffered disappointing losses to the Knights (42-24) and the Titans (28-23).

Betting: The Raiders are $1.36 favourites, while the Tigers are paying $3.15. The Tigers have 8.0 points start in the line betting. The Tigers odds have shortened slightly as the week progressed.

Stat attack: This is a battle between fourth (Raiders) and ninth (Tigers) on the ladder. It is difficult to make too much of the statistics for 2020, after just four matches.

So far, the Tigers have the better attacking record of the two teams. The Tigers are equal third for total tries scored in 2020 (17 tries, Raiders seventh, with 15). The Tigers rank first for tackle breaks in the NRL (Raiders sixth) and third for offloads (Raiders 15th). The Raiders pass less than any other team (62 general play passes per game), but the Tigers don't throw it around a lot either (79 per game). The two teams rank first (Tigers) and second (Raiders) for dummy half runs. Expect a lot of it on Saturday night.

The Raiders had never had a better defensive opening to a season (18 points conceded, one try per game) up to Round 3. They blew that on the weekend, conceding six tries and 34 points. The Raiders haven't conceded that many points in a game since August 5 2018, when they lost 40-31 to the Panthers. The Raiders now rank fourth in the competition for missed tackles and third for ineffective tackles. However, they have still only conceded an average of 13 points per game (ranked fifth). And this is where the Raiders have an advantage over the Tigers, who rank third for most tries conceded in the league so far.

2020 Season record: Raiders 3 and 1 (4th, +32)
Tigers 2 and 2 (9th, -1)

Attack: Raiders 21 points and 4 tries scored per match, ranked 7th
Tigers 25 points and 4 tries scored per match, ranked 4th

Defence: Raiders 13 points and 2 tries conceded per match, ranked 5th
Tigers 25 points and 5 tries conceded per match, ranked 14th

Possession: Raiders 49 per cent, Tigers 51 per cent

Completion rate: Raiders 75 per cent, Tigers 77 per cent

Running: Raiders 1685 running metres from 175 runs (14 dummy half runs), 163 kick return metres, 525 post contact metres per match
Tigers 1636 running metres from 177 runs (16 dummy half runs), 191 kick return metres, 486 post contact metres per match

Tackle breaks: Raiders 35, Tigers 41 per match

Line breaks: Raiders 4, Tigers 3 per match

Try assists: Raiders 3, Tigers 3 per match

Line break assists: Raiders 2, Tigers 2 per match

Offloads: Raiders 6, Tigers 11 per match

Kicking: Raiders 600 kicking metres from 21 kicks per match
Tigers 476 kicking metres from 21 kicks per match

Tackling: Raiders 337 made, 32 missed, 17 ineffective per match, 87 per cent tackle efficiency
Tigers 327 made, 30 missed, 12 ineffective per match, 89 per cent tackle efficiency

Running metres conceded: Raiders 1472, Tigers 1337 metres per match

Errors: Raiders 12, Tigers 11 per match

Penalties conceded: Raiders 6, Tigers 4 per match

Key match-ups:

Jarrod Croker and Joey Leilua. This is the first time that Joey Leilua, will line up against his former club since his departure for the Tigers early this year. He'll no doubt believe he has a point to prove in the game. Both Leilua and Jarrod Croker are donning the No. 3 jersey in 2020, but Leilua has been playing on the right for the Tigers, so is set to face his former captain. Leilua is known for his bullocking runs and has posted 16 tackle breaks so far this season (Croker nine). Croker will have his hands full containing him. Leilua has one try in 2020, while Croker is yet to cross the line. However, Croker has three try assists and a line break, compared with none for Leilua. In defence, the Raiders will be well aware Leilua is a little suspect (four try causes in 2020, compared to one for Croker), so Croker and his left side partners will probably aim to take advantage of that.

Jack Wighton and Josh Reynolds The Raiders have always struggled to contain Benji Marshall. He's won 18 of 21 games he's played against the Green Machine, in an impressive record stretching back to 2004. However, Marshall has been dumped by coach Michael Maguire, and Josh Reynolds will face Jack Wighton at five eighth.

Reynolds has been the centre of attention this week, after he was pulled over for a police roadside alcohol and drug test in the early hours of Monday morning. Reynolds was driving unlicensed, after overlooking his renewal, and he has revealed his first drug test was a false positive. He'll be aiming for a much better end to the week. He's made two appearances for the Tigers this year, scoring one try and producing one try assist, one line break assist and averaging 111 metres with the ball in hand. The last time Reynolds faced the Raiders in 2017, the Bulldogs got an upset 16-10 win at Homebush - with Reynolds' cross field running unsettling the Green Machine.

Like many of his team mates, Wighton took a few wrong options and made some errors against the Knights. But don't expect a repeat in this game for the 2019 Clive Churchill Medal winner. So far in 2020, he's scored three tries and produced one line break assist, while averaging 78 running metres. Wighton has the better defence fo the two (89 per cent tackle efficiency, compared with 81 per cent for Reynolds) - but defence may be one reason Reynolds has been preferred to Marshall.

Josh Hodgson and Harry Grant Josh Hodgson didn't have the best of games against the Knights. It followed a week of discussion amongst the rugby league pundits about whether he'd overtaken Cameron Smith has the best hooker in the world. Irrespective of your conclusion on that, there's little doubt he's in the top two or three. This week he comes up against the young hooker that the Melbourne Storm is grooming to take over from Smith. Harry Grant, 22, has been loaned to the Wests Tigers to aid his development, and after two games, there's already talk the Tigers want to keep him. Grant has averaged 71.5 fantasy points in those two games (Hodgson an average of 37.8 in 2020). I'm not saying Josh Hodgson is an "old bull" yet, but it will be interesting to see how the "young bull" goes.

Our tip: Both of these teams suffered disappointing losses in Round 4. Both of the club coaches, Ricky Stuart and Michael Maguire, made their feelings about their team's performance well and truly known. So both sides will be looking for some redemption this week. The Tigers' loss was probably the more disappointing, given their opposition, the Titans, had gone nearly a full year without a victory. The Raiders lost to a red hot Knights team... but there's no doubt, it was not a performance of a premiership contender. And that's the standard that the Raiders are held to these days.

Despite that, if the Raiders have their heads in the game on Saturday night, play with intensity and purpose, and play to their potential, I don't think there is much doubt about the result. Raiders by six.

What they're saying:

Jarrod Croker on the need to bounce back after the loss to the Knights: "They're not skill things. It's more mental than anything. We'll cop our medicine this week. We need to cop it and we need to react. We need to accept it as a group. It's every single player in the squad, and we work forward and put it behind us and get straight back into it."

I'm interested to hear how the team find bussing it to Campbelltown compared to flying in last week. With airport transfers I would think total travel time is similar.

Its **** game day!! Go you green vikings! I've woken up feeling we are going to flog them, after thinking it would be close all week. Either way, I can't see us walking away without a win. We will be absolutely fired up after last weeks poor showing and if they can't get up for Ricky today in his 400th match as a coach, well then, what can they get up for?

According to Google Maps, from the Raiders Centre in Braddon, to Campbelltown Stadium, it's 2 hours 26 minutes with no stops by road.

By the time they all gathered at the airport, did all the formalities at the airport (let's say half an hour), fly to Sydney (45 minutes), taxi/do formalities at the other end (let's say another half an hour), then got on a coach to wend it's way from Bankstown airport to Campbelltown (according to Google Maps 24 mins, let's round up to half an hour, and that's assuming they don't get caught in Sydney traffic which will be heavier today as stuff opens up),...I really don't think they're saving much, if any, time by flying.
And to all the people who doubted me, hello to them as well. - Mark Webber, Raiders Ballboy and Unluckiest F1 Driver Ever

I'm attacking in the right way, instead of just...attacking in the general direction. - Max Aaron (also eerily apropos for the Green Machine)

It’s not the time that’s the key issue in making the choice to fly, although, of course, it’s a consideration. It is the time that the players are cooped up in a confined space, big bodies cramped. That’s damaging to physical preparation. They’d easily cut that amount of time in half, by flying.

I don't think we'll see him go full Josh Dugan level, but I'm expecting somewhere just below Ferguson level. I mean, Leilua didn't just go AWOL on everyone, which is a plus, so.

Time to atone for their lackluster game last week. There are much better sides in the comp than the Tigs so a win tonight is a must.
It's a simple game; tackle, back-up, pass, hold the ball! What did I say? "Hold the bloody ball!!"

Probably. On the same side, as well tonight.
On checking, they've faced each other once before, in Rd 13 2015, Raiders V Knights.

Thus far the first two games tonight have been wackily refereed. I sure hope that trend doesn't continue.

I'm attacking in the right way, instead of just...attacking in the general direction. - Max Aaron (also eerily apropos for the Green Machine)

Trust the Storm to be the ones to introduce the soccer dive with that Finucane penalty. That was disgusting.

The Canberra Raiders have taken to the field, now the Wests Tigers. Nice tribute to Arthur Summons, big banner unveiled. The Raiders kick off, we are underway! The Raiders in their white away jerseys tonight.
