Ready to roll or ‘massive holes’: State of every NRL squad rated ahead of Round 3 restart
Raiders: 1. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad 2. Jordan Rapana 3. Jarrod Croker 4. Curtis Scott 5. Nick Cotric 6. Jack Wighton 7. George Williams 8. Josh Papalii 9. Josh Hodgson 10. Corey Horsburgh 11. Joseph Tapine 12. Elliott Whitehead 13. Iosia Soliola 14. Siliva Havili 15. Dunamis Lui 16. Bailey Simonsson 17. Emre Guler
Backs: Jordan Rapana’s return from rugby union is the only change to the Green Machine’s backline, with Bailey Simonsson reverting to his bench role from last season. The evolution of No.7 recruit George Williams and his partnership with Jack Wighton will be the key for the Raiders as they aim to go one better this year.
Forwards: John Bateman is not expected to overcome a shoulder injury in time for Round 3 in the only real weakness for Ricky Stuart’s pack, which is up there with the Roosters and the Storm as the best in the competition.
Rating: A+

Re: 2020 Rd 3 V Storm: Teams and Previews
Jarrod Croker interview on Fox League Live:
All the boys got a bit of work done in the break. We couldn't afford to come back with anyone lagging and to their credit, the boys all came back in good nick.
We've almost forgotten about the first two games and the ladder. But we now have 10 days to prepare for one of the best teams in the competition, there is no room to dip our toe in the water. We'll be ready to go.
There are some things to work on with the six again call. We have started doing that at training, we'll have to see how it goes as well. We have to work on transitions, we won't have the opportunity to re-set play with the penalty.
Jordan Rapana says he's right to go. If you give him a jersey and footy, he'll go all day. He didn't get the opportunities he'd like in union in Japan. He's taken a week to get some kms in his legs, but by the time the season starts he'll be ready to go.
George Williams. I think he's come out and shown his value straight away. The whole right edge was completely new in the first two games. The early signs, combinations are good. I know Jack Wighton and Josh Hodgson have been working hard to support his transition too.
Jack Wighton V Cameron Munster. Two of the best running five eights in the game. Does he love the personal battle? He'll take the bull by the horns, he just wants to get in amongst it. He's one of the best defenders at five eighth. I'm glad to be beside him.
We've got to be fit, at our best defensively, it's going to be a grind. No one will have flashy attack in full gear early. That's what we're basing our preparations around for early in the season.
Campbelltown Stadium? I don't think anyone is complaining. We're just happy to be playing, it is two and a half hours down the road, so that's the best other option for us. We'd like to play at Canberra Stadium, but there's no crowds and we don't care where we are playing.

Am I the only one to find it unbelievable that Melbourne was preferred over GIO?? If they were serious about biosecurity etc then Canberra would be the ideal stadium.

Canberra Raiders
1. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad
2. Bailey Simonsson
3. Jarrod Croker
4. Curtis Scott
5. Nick Cotric
6. Jack Wighton
7. George Williams
8. Josh Papalii
9. Josh Hodgson
10. Sia Soliola
11. Joseph Tapine
12. Elliott Whitehead
13. Corey Horsburgh
14. Siliva Havili
15. Dunamis Lui
16. Ryan Sutton
17. Emre Guler
Others: John Bateman, Sam Williams, Michael Oldfield, Jack Murchie.
Canberra are hopeful of John Bateman overcoming a shoulder injury after surgery in February but the English forward said he was doubtful over whether he will be right to go. Even if he is not right for the May 30 meeting with Melbourne, his imminent return is a huge advantage for the 2019 grand finalists ahead of a likely shortened season. Suspended forward Hudson Young appears the only player in the senior squad to be disadvantaged by the competition's hiatus with his round six return meaning he still has an extra three weeks on the sidelines.

Canberra Raiders fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad aims to model himself on the NRL's best
Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad has used his recent downtime to study rugby league's premier fullbacks in a bid to add more strings to his bow ahead of the NRL's return.
"For me it's just about building on the platform I laid last year, that's not going away from the stuff I do best," Nicoll-Klokstad said. "Something I've done a lot more already this year is a lot more video, is watching a lot more video. Watching James Tedesco, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Clint Gutherson.

English halves can cut it in NRL: Canberra Raiders recruit George Williams
Canberra halfback George Williams believes the career of countryman Gareth Widdop is proof English halves can conquer the NRL.
"It was something that I loved, something I've looked forward to for a long time since I signed. I was pretty nervous going into the first two games, but I'm a little bit more confident now I've got a few games under my belt. And I've been with the team a lot longer, so yeah, exciting times."

NRL.com Power rankings
1. Canberra Raiders (Last time: 1)
After two comfortable wins, the pressure lifts for the Raiders this week against the Storm. We'll soon see the injury return of John Bateman and whether any supposed issues with his contract will disrupt last year's grand finalists.
I'm not buying into the drama and I think they'll remain in the mix all year. Halfback George Williams will be more familiar with the team which can only be a positive.

Re: 2020 Rd 3 V Storm: Teams and Previews
Team list Tuesday!
Only real 2 questions are whether Bateman is named in the 21 and if he is to play on Saturday who makes way? My preference is for Lui, however I think it'll be Havili.
And then does Rapana play? If so surely it's off the bench for Oldfield.

It's for the convenience of broadcasters, I can't see a biosecurity angle. They sook about coming to Canberra every time. I'm glad the team aren't bitching about it but, it's just another poke in the eye.

Bateman will play IMO, smokescreen ahoy!
Re: 2020 Rd 3 V Storm: Teams and Previews
Just rewatching our games from this year so far, havilli shouldnt leave our 17 for the rest of the year. When hes on as a middle it frees hodgo up to be caught with the ball occasionally and allows the next play not to be hindered by a lack of experience at dummy half (eg whiteheads try off a ghuler pass only happens because havs can run the play from dh) along with the fact hes also a very good runner of the ball.
Dont delete this GE
Re: 2020 Rd 3 V Storm: Teams and Previews
Yeah I'm on the Havilii team. Some utilities are ok but kind of "meh" at two or three jobs. Havilii is genuine tackle buster plus has an offload and lay on a shot so can have the impact you need from a bargain bench forward. And his hooker game is solid, quick service and very direct which works well with our team. Good player at the value. Does a job in the normal rotation and can genuinely do a good enough job that we can win games if he has to do big minutes at hooker or middle.simo wrote: ↑May 26, 2020, 11:59 am Just rewatching our games from this year so far, havilli shouldnt leave our 17 for the rest of the year. No Sutton or Williams to be seen?
Wouldn't want any injuries- our depth will be tested big time.

Does Sutton have a niggle?
We’ve released three forwards in the last week, two more are out injured/suspended and he doesn’t even make the 21?
He’s a perfectly good workhorse, kind of shocked he’s not on the bench let alone the squad.

Based on a fun segment on "have you been paying attention"
He is either a 24yr old prop from cook town
Or
A small table with a mirrored top from ikea

You'd have to think Sam Williams and Ryan Sutton have a little niggle... or it is part of a rotation policy... Each team gets to take 20 players to a game, so perhaps they're sharing it around?

Josh Papalii ready for triple-treat milestone
In Josh Papalii's 200th game in green, the Raiders will be aiming for three consecutive wins against the Storm for the first time in the club's history and targeting a hat-trick of wins to start a season for the first time since 2005.
"Big Papa is a huge part of our team, he's obviously been at our club for a long, long time and he's really the rock of this team. I'm sure the boys will get up and put on a good performance for him," said winger Bailey Simonsson.

Jarrod Croker interview...
Bronson Xerri. Bit of a shock, extremely disappointing. Can't comment too much on it until we hear the full story. Very disappointing. At the end of the day, you're in control of what you put in your own body. I'm not one to take protein etc, not a pristine athlete! Shame it has come down on the eve of the return of the game.
Clash with the Storm, won twice last year in Melbourne very proud of it. Very different circumstances. Had a fair crowd of Raiders fans last year. Have to complete, kick to the corners. Whoever does that generally comes out on top. Big challenge, looking forward to it.
Excited just to be playing footy. Bit of a rivalry, rivalry between the coaches. Lots in the past couple of encounters, a bit of drama. Big comeback in the first game with two of our players in the sin bin. Bit of a grind. Looking forward to it.
John Bateman. Bit of stuff outside that we haven't been worrying about. We can only worry about what we can control. Not a distraction.
Travelling every week. Not gone into too much detail. Will be tough with the travel, we will address a week at a time. Won't want to look too far ahead, it's draining mentally to do that. We've had a fair bit of drama with travel last year, we're used to it.
