NRL consider reverting to afternoon Grand Final

The NRL grand final has been pushed back to Sunday, October 25 as part of the revamped season. It will be the first time in years that it hasn’t been played on the October long weekend, which has many fans calling for the game to be played in the afternoon rather than the usual 7.30pm kick-off.

The NRL is on board with changing the time and acting NRL CEO Andrew Abdo raised the idea with during broadcast negotiations with Channel 9, but the broadcaster does not like it.

I'm actually with Channel 9 on this one. A Sunday evening slot maximises the eyeballs on one of the biggest events in the rugby league calendar... and maximises our TV dollars, which we desperately need. Given the Grand Final has been delayed into late October, the weather is going to be even warmer... it should be played at night, as it could be far too hot for the players and public. The other thing is... the atmosphere at night is WAY better in my experience.

I understand that there's no public holiday on the next day... but NSW and the ACT are the only places where that is relevant now. It shouldn't be too hard to take a day off the next day if you need to.

Sunday afternoon footy is unbeatable.

However its a good point regarding the heat and one of the reasons why Randwick hosts many Summer race days, as it’s too hot out west.

Too much risk of a hot grand final day ruining the game with dropped ball and scrappy play.

Really, what does it matter what the fans say on this topic? They asked a few years back. The fans said afternoon but they ignored it.
