I dont regularly look at contract deals, but here are Daltons.

The Dallas Cowboys gave Dak Prescott an overqualified backup when they signed Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton to a one-year contract and waived former Central Michigan starter Cooper Rush.

We knew the Red Rifle's contract was worth upwards of $7 million, but now we have the full details. The deal is worth around $3 million in base salary, with the other $4 million coming by way of incentives.

Here's the breakdown:

Dalton plays 50% of the snaps over the course of the entire season (including playoffs) to earn an additional $1 million.
Partial playing time for Dalton both in the regular and postseason constitutes another bump in pay.
Dalton plays an "active role" in the Cowboys winning the Super Bowl for the QB to earn the full $7 million.

The cowboys can say all they like about this having zero to do with Dak. I dont buy it.
This is Dak contract insurance. And frankly they'd be negligent if they didnt do something like this

Dallas Cowboys
Stop it with this Andy Dalton as leverage against Dak Prescott stuff. Come on! Taysom Hill just got $21M and Dalton has a base of $3M. He is an expert insurance policy if Prescott gets hurt. That's it. Dalton gets to come back to Texas and, stuck in the worst QB market of all-time, he gets to a potential winning team loaded with first-round talent on offense and a great offensive line to bide his time until hitting the market again in a less bloated 2021 landscape. That's it. No one wants Dak to win a Super Bowl in Dallas more than Jerry Jones and no one wants to be able to say "I told ya'll about that Prescott!" more than Jerry and no one has been pinned into a corner by a QB more than Jerry (it's Dan Snyder v. Kirk Cousins, 2.0, and we all know who delivered repeated knockout blows in that tilt). He placed Prescott's value on an annual basis at least at $30M a year ago, before Prescott's best season ever. The QB can sit back til mid July and see what happens with a Mahomes or Watson extension. This changes none of that.

Some of the other bits are interesting reading too.

Very similar to the deal Fitzmagic signed with the Dolphins when they had no QBs.

To be clear, i dont think this insurance against Dak asking for a ton, or anything like that.
When i say contract insurance i mean if Dak and Dallas cant come to a deal, and Dak decides to hold out, Dalton can keep them afloat

Dalton doesn't give Cowboys any leverage against Dak but it does reduce Dak's leverage against the Cowboys as they have a decent fallback position.

Comparing the contracts of Dalton and Hill is stupid. Apples and oranges.

I know piggy sees Dalton as a backup with upside, but does this mean u have reached that conclusion now too?

Dalton is not a back up, he's a NFL calibre starting QB... Granted it's bottom teir but in ideal circumstances, with good talent around him and good coaching, you can win a lot of football games with him. He was a 10 win a year QB in a tough division when Cinci had a really good roster.

The difference between him and the legit franchise QB's is he doesnt elevate talent around him.

Dalton isn't a superstar but he's too good to be sitting as a backup with no legitimate shot at the starting job. We saw with Tannehill what can be achieved with a half decent QB in a good system.

For Dalton this stint in Dallas might just be a pitstop, waiting for a starting opportunity to present itself in 2021.

Here is the word from the horses mouth. Basically says all the things we already knew/ speculated. BUT, @northern raider, confirms that moving home was an attractive part.

Dalton was a starter his entire nine-year career in Cincinnati. So, why Dallas?

"I had several options out there, and I had to figure out what was the best situation for me to go into that was going to set me up for this next half of my career," Dalton said on ESPN insider Adam Schefter’s podcast. "After weighing everything, I felt like Dallas was going to be the right fit for me this year. I'm excited about it.

"I wanted to join a high-class organization and a team that's ready to win and be with (head coach) Mike McCarthy – just his history with quarterbacks. I think it gives me a chance to come to a new place, a chance to learn, to help Dak out any way I can. And then just to be an asset to this team. Obviously I bring a lot of experience and can bring a lot to the table. I'm here to help this team win and help any way I can."

Dalton said location was attractive, too. The former TCU star already lives in the North Texas area. Being able to keep his family home right now, particularly during the country's COVID-19 crisis, was a factor.

Did you expect an article on the Dallas Cowboys website to say anything different?

Not at all, but it mentions him 'home' as being attractive, and that he lives in the North Texas area.

He used a few key cliches though...
"...best situation for me to go into that was going to set me up for this next half of my career."
"I wanted to join a high-class organization and a team that's ready to win..."
"...I'm here to help this team win and help any way I can."

Obviously you can take that different ways, but that sounds like winding down and looking to his post footy career to me. Looking to 'buy' a ring before he hangs up the boots is a big one for me, but moving home too.

Firstly that whole dialogue sounds like it was created by an automated bot. If you want to take it as genuine then "next half of my career" is nothing like a player who's just signed is last contract. I'll bet you $1,000,000 Dalton is playing again somewhere in 2021.

Standard NFL offseason really. Makes me laugh the level of outrage at some fairly lame things NRL players do by comparison.
