Re: The most underrated Raiders of all time
I always thought Thurling was underrated too. Think he'd look good in the current side.
Re: The most underrated Raiders of all time
Could not disagree more with the Thurling nominations
Him at his peak would not be in our top 30 right now.

Agree. Thurling Just Ran holes outside Campo in form. Even I would have been able to do that.Botman wrote:Could not disagree more with the Thurling nominations

Mind you I would have dropped the ball when putting it down for the try. I Actually did this in my first two try attempts and also did it a number of times in later games without the referee even noticing.
Re: The most underrated Raiders of all time
Cannonball Williams was a personal favourite of mine
This was one the hardest bastards to ever grace a Raiders jersy... one of the most intimidating blokes you'll ever see
And then at one of those old RA post season drinks, he showed up and a few of us were chatting to him for a while, a long while... perhaps a long while longer than he had planned... then all of a sudden he got message and was SHOOK. He was running cold sweats. 10 minutes later his partner showed up to pick him and it was like a kid being put in the naughty corner.
It was genuinely endeering to see this big hulking monster of a man doing the "yes dear, sorry dear, of course dear" routine haha
These lads arent so different to you or i, we've all got a boss to answer to

Re: The most underrated Raiders of all time
I'd argue Havili is underrated too
Re: The most underrated Raiders of all time
There's a lot of outright plodders getting a mention now.

I'd argue he has shown more than what Young/Murchie/Collins have in all their interrupted Raiders careers thus far.kiwi raider wrote: ↑April 6, 2020, 10:16 ami'd have him ahead of JJ collins at least, possibly one or two others

Re: The most underrated Raiders of all time
It's hard to compare when his best years were a decade or more ago but have a look at Thurlings POTY record if you want a more contempary assesment of his ability. He was good.

you seriously rank Scott Logan ahead the likes of Papalii, todd, Lazarus?BadnMean wrote: ↑April 5, 2020, 1:04 pmWas just about to post suggesting Scott Logan.Fuifui Bradbrad wrote: ↑April 5, 2020, 11:00 am A crack at an underrated Raiders lineup, based on the posts so far
1. Mark Bell
2. Phil Graham
3. Colin Best
4. Danny Galea
5. Joel Monaghan
6. Matthew Wood
7. Lincoln Withers
8. Nigel Plum
9. Michael Monaghan
10. Scott Logan
11. Michael Hodgson
12. Joe Picker
13. Alan Tongue
14. Andrew Lomu
15. Trevor Thurling
16. Alan Rothery
17. Ben Jones
He was no flash in the pan, put in years of top notch service.
Hit hard, made yards. Played as many as Pongia and Lomax for us and honestly I've got him in the same bracket as them, just ahead of Todd. Lazo, Papa, Backo, Wiki (depending where you play him) as our top bracket.
I wonder if i watched a different Scott logan sometimes, tried his guts out and was a good enforcer but i'd rank him around or below guys like Soliola, Michael Hodgson, TLL, Shillington, Paulo

I do have him ahead of Todd though. Todd was ok, solid. But never really impressed me as more than that.

Waiting for somebody to mention Kris Kahler

Re: The most underrated Raiders of all time
JJ Collins ill accept but no chance id take Thurling over Murchie or Young... those guys have a chance to be good FGers... we know for a fact Trevor Thurling couldnt achieve that. Would would you rather have? A lottery ticket you know isnt a winner, or one that might win?Raider 47 wrote: ↑April 6, 2020, 10:16 amI'd argue he has shown more than what Young/Murchie/Collins have in all their interrupted Raiders careers thus far.kiwi raider wrote: ↑April 6, 2020, 10:16 ami'd have him ahead of JJ collins at least, possibly one or two others

Jason Burnham.
Re: The most underrated Raiders of all time
I mean Thurling, Rothery, Jones, Lomu, Picker (my beloved) and Williams (even though i liked very much personally)
these guys arent under-rated, they werent any good! **** some of them were a little overrated based on their actual ability
Guys like Scott Logan, Mick Monaghan... these are the sort of guys i think qualify. To me underrated players are the ones who put in quality performances but who never quite appreciated the way some other flasher players were in their day.

Re: The most underrated Raiders of all time
Let's not get the 100s of plodders mixed up with the handful of underrated.
Fact is..during some very lean years we had plenty of players that wouldn't have got a start anywhere in bush footy..

Re: The most underrated Raiders of all time
gets very hard to define underrated. Also underrated by who, Raiders fans or the broader league community? Should really be the latter. Guys who could play at rep quality but never got those accolades. In that regard Logan and Mick Monnas would be in the category. I'd also throw in Clinton Schifcofske and Adam Mogg. I know they played a couple of Origins for QLD but they are better than those cameos.Botman wrote: ↑April 6, 2020, 12:15 pm I mean Thurling, Rothery, Jones, Lomu, Picker (my beloved) and Williams (even though i liked very much personally)

Re: The most underrated Raiders of all time
Yeah i think the greater RL community and Raiders fans see this entirely differently
as this thread shows, lot of love for Thurling but i'd wager 99% of non Raiders fans have absolutely no memory of him whatsoever. So its hard to say a guy was underrated he wasnt good enough to be remembered
