Not a real indication of each side. Both had a majority of trialists. Gordan Whippy and Ronan Michael were impressive though.

The young Green Machine half impressing Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart

Canberra have high hopes for a young utility back poached by recruitment guru Peter Mulholland from North Queensland. Adam Cook, a halfback or fullback from Townsville Blackhawks, is 19 and joined up with the Raiders this pre-season.

"He's a great kid and has that something special," Mulholland said.

Sam Hooper is the latest Warilla-Lake South product to stake his claim at being a professional rugby league player, after recently penning a deal with the Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg side.

"During last season with Warilla, I started talking with Canberra and following the season, I signed a two-year deal with the club," Hooper, who was named Group Seven Under 18s Player of the Year in 2019, said.

I thought it was a little bit disappointing, as the Raiders rarely clicked in attack and conceded seven tries. But it is always hard to assess these games... no team lists and chopping and changing... not clear which players are being held in reserve... even if you have a good view. It’s really difficult to watch a game at Raiders HQ as there is a huge distance to the field from the sidelines and the view of play is often obstructed. Anyway, the only games that count start in Round 1.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team had a bye in Round 1 - and are scheduled to play their season opener at Belmore against the Canterbury Bulldogs. The Raiders were Grand Finalists in 2019, but lost 16-14 to the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Western Sydney Stadium. There has been a good deal of turnover in the squad since 2019 - and the Raiders trial form indicates that the team is still building new combinations. The Bulldogs lost their opening match of the season, defeated by the Parramatta Eels, 20-14, at Campbelltown. The Raiders won the contest between these clubs in Round 12 last year, 36-16, at Belmore.

Grassroots footy, second-tier competitions and junior representative fixtures are expected to be suspended due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Officials at both the NSWRL and QRL are meeting on Tuesday to discuss contingency plans around their state-based and lower tier competitions, with the prospect of six to 10-week hiatuses raised. No official call has been made by either body, but the suspension of all bar top-level rugby league until at least May is being reluctantly planned for.

The NSWRL will make a final decision on Wednesday morning. Shortened seasons in both second-tier competitions, as well as junior representative leagues including Harold Matthews and SG Ball, remain an option for later in the year

NSWRL suspends all competitions over COVID-19

A special meeting of the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) Board has agreed to postpone all Community Rugby League until at least 1 May 2020, effective immediately, while all major NSWRL competitions have been suspended until 31 May in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Community Rugby League, which involves more than 100,000 grassroots players across NSW, from Under 6s to open age, was due to kick-off on 4 April, but will now be delayed until at least 1 May.

NSWRL’s 13 major competitions, most of which started last weekend, with the exception of junior representative competitions which kicked off in February, have been suspended until 31 May. The later date will allow teams to train and prepare earlier in May if Community Rugby League is cleared to resume.

2020 Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg season all over, before a ball is kicked

The National Rugby League (NRL), along with New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL), Queensland Rugby League (QRL) and the Affiliated States, has announced the cancellation of a number of male and female competitions, tournaments and national representative programs.

The uncertain and unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 pandemic made the scheduling of these fixtures untenable in 2020.

NRL Head of Football – Participation, Pathways and Game Development Luke Ellis said the decision was unfortunate but necessary under the circumstances.

“I know this will be a disappointing outcome for those involved in these competitions right across Australia, but the health and safety of those involved with rugby league must always come first,” Mr Ellis said.

“It was essential for us to at least give the players, clubs and staff some certainty going forward so they can focus on themselves and their families during this uncertain time.”

NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said: “It is devastating for everyone involved but the advice has changed dramatically since we suspended these competitions nine days ago.”

“We have an obligation to be part of the solution for this pandemic, both for the Rugby League community and also for the community more generally. This view was uppermost in the minds of the Board.”

QRL Managing Director Rob Moore said: “We understand the outcome is a heartbreaking one for the rugby league community, but it’s a call that simply had to be made given the current circumstances.”

“Rugby league is part of the fabric of Queensland, and as such, we have key responsibilities to the wider community as well.

The cancelled competitions include:

National: Harvey Norman Women’s National Championship; National Schoolboys Championships; all Combined Affiliated States representative football

Queensland Rugby League: Intrust Super Cup; BHP Premiership; Hastings Deering Colts; Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup

New South Wales Rugby League: Canterbury Cup NSW; Jersey Flegg Cup (Under 20s); UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 18s); Laurie Daley Cup (Under 18s); Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 18s women); UNE Harold Matthews Cup (Under 16s); Andrew Johns Cup (Under 16s); Women’s Country Championships and Men’s Under 23s Country Championships.

Canberra Raiders recruitment guru Peter Mulholland calls for restructure junior representative competitions

One of league’s most respected eyes for talent, Canberra Raiders recruitment officer Peter Mulholland, believes officials should bring back the under 21s and 19s, after the cancellation of most NSWRL 2020 competitions.

“I think it is an opportunity to recalibrate the junior representative competitions, in terms of the age groups,” Mulholland said. “Maybe we look at an under 21s and a 19s competition, which I believe were the most successful in the past.

Irish youngster Ronan Michael still eyeing off a future opportunity with the Canberra Raiders

Ronan Michael has recounted his whirlwind time in rugby league, culminating with a dream opportunity at the Canberra Raiders which was never fulfilled due to the COVID-19 shutdown.

“With the under 20s season being cancelled I don’t think I will be going back to Australia this year, unfortunately,” Ronan said. “I would love to go back (in 2021) if something could be arranged but as far as I know after the COVID-19 thing is over I will go back to Huddersfield and hopefully I will get to play Super League.”

Canberra Raiders under-20s swapping shorts for thermals

Queenslanders in the Canberra Raiders Under 20s - the likes of Adrian Trevilyan, Brad Schneider, Adam Cook and Jarrett Subloo - are returning to the capital, while Under 18s players Trey Mooney, JJ Clarkson, Caleb Esera and Clay Webb could too... to play in the 2020 Canberra Raiders Cup.

"We do have a few Queensland boys who are going to come back this weekend," coach Ash Barnes said. "Some of them were in their shorts and shirts and I said they're going to have to change that pretty quickly.
