Canberra Raiders star John Bateman aims for battle of the Gold Coast Titans

The surgery went well and now John Bateman is aiming to be ready for round one. There was talk the NRL second-rower-of-the-year could miss five games, but Bateman felt that wouldn't be the case.

"It's just one of those things seeing how it goes, seeing how it feels... I'm aiming for round one, but you never know. It's an injury and you never know what's going to happen. That's the aim - to get back for round one.

I wanted to say that to him on the weekend.

That was if they had to amputate the shoulder and stick the arm in the hole and staple it on.

That's really not good. Hopefully it's a exaggerated return date like usual with our inuries.

If it's now looking like round 7-8, I guess the stapling didn't work that effectively...

Tapine to #11 and Sia or Sutton to lock until Young returns.

My preferred lineup would have Tapine move to second row and Horsburgh to lock. But going by reports, Tapine hasn't been training at second row and wants to nail down the lock position...

Horses lateral movement isn't great if I remember last year. Weird decision if that's the case. Would rather Tapine to 2nd row, Horse/Sutton to lock...

I wonder why Murchie's so far out of favour

Would have been a good opportunity for him to slot in, at least on the bench

Who HAS been training 2nd row? We don't really have great depth there- plenty of middles but Young was our only real edge reserve + he's out for 5 weeks for brainless stupidity.

That edge us where G Willy needs to get settled and learn NRL standard defence, it's vital. C Scott on the other side of GWilly is also up in the air (more brainless stupidity). You can't win more than you lose if you have a weak edge getting torn up.

It would be tempting to put Whitehead on that side to start the year so GWilly can get settled with good D around him. Who is your edge choices? I would have said Tapine too, I don't think Hors has the mobility.

O Donnel, Murchie, Porter, Keir- I don't know much about them. Could Havilii do a job there? He's a good enough all-rounder and nippy in a straight line, not sure about laterally...

From what others have said it'll be the opposite with Horse in the 2nd row. I'm not confident with him defending out wide long term. He's not as quick laterally and there's a lot more decision making then in the middle but I guess we don't have much choice if Tapine is staying put, Young is out and Murchie is gone.
Can't see Horse pushing out 80 either so that is a 4 forward bench.

Dan Keir and Kai O'Donnell won't get a look due to their contracts, unless something changes before round 1.
We might see Soliola off the bench to come on to give Horse a break over half time and then Soliola into the middle when Horsburgh comes back on.
8. Papalii
10. Lui
11. Whitehead
12. Horsburgh
13. Tapine

14. Havili
15. Soliola
16. Sutton
17. Guler

No choice is ideal. Soliola is a touch slower and can be drawn in to put a hit on the half instead of staying on his man. He's spent so much time in the middle.
Lui has played some 2nd row for Somoa. Guler for Mounties. Wouldn't be confident in either out wide in 1st grade.

My choice would have been similar to yours with Tapine out wide, but Sutton at lock.

I read somewhere on these forums that Horsburgh had been training there

I wouldn't mind seeing Horsburgh in second row for round one but if he struggles then I'd like to see an immediate switch between him and Tapine

Horse was in Batemans spot at the fan day, and has been training there. While it was a 1-2 wks deal, i was ok with this.
Now that its 7-8, surely the smart play is push Tapine wider, and play Sutton at 13.

It would be absolute madness to not nice Tapine out and put Horse out there instead. It makes too much sense not too.

If horse has been training there I assume they’ll give him the job this week in the trial and see how he goes. If it’s a total wreck then shifting Tarps out is the smart choice. Who knows though. Horse surprised us all last year, who’s to say he can’t do it again?

My thoughts too. Atleast we have a favourable draw so if we need some time to find our feet, we can still push for top 4.

Horsburgh found his feet in the middle faster than 90% of the guys his age, he is a natural. Ricky knows something (a lot) that I don't if he's pushing him out wide.
