Ricky Stuart: First to shout and he'd come back with 20 bourbons

Canberra Raiders legend Ricky Stuart: First to shout and he'd come back with 20 bourbons

Ricky was a couple of years younger than me and played junior rugby union in the same age group as my brother. I used to see him play.

He’s one of those blokes, he’s got to be first. He’s got to be the first one to shout. First to the bar. He and I used to have competitive shouts! He’d come back with 20 bourbon and Cokes, that’d be his shout, for all the boys. I’d come back with 25. He’d have to beat me.

Sounds like it was written late last season, but good article.

I really hope we can win a premiership and have 50k odd chanting his name in grand appreciation.

He did. The Club couldnt afford him, he was squeezed out by the salary cap. I'll never blame a player for that.
Love the Raiders, Hate The NRL.

Back when the NRL had a weird post super league salary cap. Broncos were allowed to keep a host of their superstars in their absolute prime. Raiders on the other hand had to release players like Stuart and Clyde, two favourite sons who were clearly past their best.

This was also at a time when rugby union and the Brumbies were making headway into Canberra rugby league fans. NRL had absolutely zero understanding of the rugby league market in Canberra and the surrounding region. Maybe nothing has changed.
