Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

I like that we've reverted to a single trial for 2020. Harking back to the system which made 2017-18 such a huge success.

Burgess and Sele fire as Souths down Eels in trial

A largely reserve-grade South Sydney side has edged out a stronger Parramatta line-up 28-24 at Ringrose Park on Friday night, with England international Tom Burgess leading the way.

In each club's first 13-a-side hit-out of 2020, the Eels went in with a far stronger side, naming nine of their likely round one 17 and a total of 16 players with NRL experience.

SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS 28 (J.Paulo 2, J.Johns, C.Allan, T.Burgess tries; B.Taaffe 4 goals) beat PARRAMATTA EELS 24 (J.Fonua, H.Dunster, M.Jennings, O.Kaufusi, M.Makatoa tries; R.Davies, B.Keighran goals) at Ringrose Park

Melbourne Storm strike late to beat New Zealand Warriors

A barnstorming showing from young prop Tino Faasuamaleaui, and the potential unearthing of the next brilliant Melbourne fullback in Nicho Hynes, emerged as the standout features of the Storm's 18-16 victory over the New Zealand Warriors in Saturday's trial in Palmerston North.

Melbourne Storm 18 (C.Johns, H.Grant, S.Earl, C.Lewis tries; C.Johns goal) defeated New Zealand Warriors 16 (P.Turner, C.Harris-Tavita, S.Tu tries; C.Harris-Tavita, A.Keighran goals) at Palmerston North.

2020 NRL trials

Lomax stars, Pereira scores four as St George Illawarra Dragons thump Newcastle Knights

The score sheet read a decisive 38-12 win for St George Illawarra in the their trial against the Knights - and it seems the Dragons have found a capable fullback in Lomax to ease the pain of losing Dufty (cheekbone) for the early rounds of the 2020 NRL season. Lomax featured in two tries and kicked four goals – two from the sidelines – to show he should also take on the goal-kicking duties this year.

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS 38 (J.Pereira 4, Clune, B.Wiliame, M.Ravalawa try; Z.Lomax 4, T.Sailor goals) defeated NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS 12 (C.Randall, L.Huth tries; T.Hoy, M.Lino goals) at Maitland Regional Sportsground

Newcastle were pretty lazy. As much as you can read into a trial, I think there is something to worry about there.
Wests had an under-strength side. As did the sharks. Naden looked great but his issue has always been defense.
NQLD looked good.

20th min TRY ROOSTERS to Joseph Manu. Easy break right up the middle to set it up. The St Helens defence is far too loose... will call it early... the Roosters have this game in their keeping. Flanagan fails to convert... hits the cross bar.

49th min Going to video... the referee says no try on field for a Saints try... NO TRY awarded. He was short, eventually got there, but probably bobbled. Chricton knocked on in the lead up... but St Helens lose the ball on an early tackle in the ensuing set in the red zone. Can’t afford to throw those chances away.

Keary high tackle on his own player! Knocks Butcher out! And Butcher is off. The Roosters are looking a bit rattled at the moment. Arguing every single refereeing decision.

Saints lose another chance, but not entirely sure that wasn’t a try. I think a video review would have shown it.

78th min TRY SAINTS to Alex Walmsley, just crashes over. The video referee is taking his time... TRY confirmed. St Helens certainly had their chances to win this game... but they were not composed or ruthless enough to do so. Defence simply not good enough at times and many attacking opportunities thrown away. Converted.

Sydney Roosters 20
St Helens 12

Watching English teams makes me worry a bit about George Williams. The English clubs play a decent game of footy but the halves really struggle against good defence. Hopefully it’s just a matter of having the ability and adjusting to the NRL.

Didn't watch the game, but yeah, this has always been the issue with the Pommie halves, and most of the backs. The defence in the NRL is much more organised and they don't have anywhere near as much time with the ball.

I think Ricky will keep things simple for Williams. His main reason for being here seems to be the short kicking game. Hodgo will organise the boys into field position and will likely share most of the long kicking duties with Wighton.

They created opportunities. The outside men dropped too much ball whereas for the roosters you've got Tupou picking it up off his ankles.

I really fail to understand why all the clubs can't at least manage to name a trial squad by the usual time of 4pm Tuesday...
