12 mins to go TRY WARRIORS to Zyon Maiu'u. Big overlap in the end. It’s off the back of a forced line drop out and a red zone penalty. Raiders paying for some errors.

2 mins to go TRY RAIDERS! Jack Williams hat trick. Kick ahead on the last and they regathered and score! What a try! Spencer can’t convert.

Raiders 36-28

FULL TIME

WHAT A GAME!

Hard to go past Williams as man of the match, but I liked what Ethan Foster contributed off the bench. Hooker Zane Thomson very busy... and Esera continues to impress.

That really was a good game. Very enjoyable. The Warriors were very big, tough and Moala has been playing Flegg. But the Raiders wore them down in the second half and tired the Warriors out, forcing error. See the pics and video on The GH Instagram.

Canberra Raiders on winner’s list

After their Round 1 defeat to Parramatta at Belconnen, the Canberra Raiders UNE Harold Matthews Cup side have made a strong turnaround with a 12-point win over the St George Dragons.

The men in in green were under pressure early as St George winger Issac Petrus crossed over in the 16th minute, but a brace of tries for Siamani Leuluai gave the Raiders a 10-point buffer just after halftime.

LAST WEEK: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup side find themselves in an unfamiliar first place on the ladder, after comprehensively defeating the Penrith Panthers, 40-6, last Saturday. They have now posted two wins from two games... after winning just two matches all season in 2019. Krystal Blackwell scored a hattrick in the seven tries to one victory over the Panthers.

THIS WEEK: The Raiders now meet the Wests Tigers in Round 3. The Tigers suffered a 44-6 loss last weekend to the Illawarra Steelers, their only game of the season so far. Canberra has lost both of the previous meetings between the two clubs - suffering a 34-10 loss in Round 7 last year at Leichhardt and a 62-4 loss in Round 6 at Campbelltown in 2018. The Tigers finished third on the ladder in 2019 - and were knocked out of the finals in Week 3, by the eventual premiers, the Steelers. Canberra has a LLLWW form line its past five matches; the Wests Tigers have a WWWLL record. This match should be another good test for the Raiders.

LAST WEEK: The Canberra Raiders came out on top in a tense battle with the New Zealand Warriors in Round 2, winning 36-28. The Warriors are a big, tough and physical team, but the Raiders eventually wore them down, sealing the victory with an exciting try to Jack Williams with two minutes remaining.

The Raiders were first on the board, with Connor Williams scoring a try in just the third minute. A high kick was fumbled by the Warriors, and Williams regathered with just the try line in front of him. The Warriors struck back five minutes later. The Raiders put in an attacking kick on the Warriors goal line, but half Sione Moala defused and ran 95 metres to score a spectacular try. The visitors went to a 12-6 lead courtesy of a try in the 16th minute to late inclusion Josiah Karapani.

The match then swung back to the Raiders. Centre Junior Tupou found an overlap in the 21st minute, and converted his own try to level the scores. Tupou then made some big in-roads to set up a Kane Smith try just five minutes later. However, the Warriors turned the match on its head, scoring two tries in the final five minutes of the first half. Back rower Zyon Maiu'u scored a simple try in the 31st minute, after the Warriors grubbered on the last and the Raiders could not handle the ball on their own goal line. And then with one minute to the break, Moala produced a great break and offload - sending hooker Taniela Otukolo in under the posts.

The Warriors took a 24-18 lead to the break, but the Raiders were the first to score in the second half - with interchange prop Ethan Foster falling backwards over the line and somehow grounding the ball. Then enter Jack Williams. He scored two tries in the space of five minutes, giving Canberra a 32-24 lead with just over 15 minutes still on the clock. Zyon Maiu'u brought the Warriors back into the game with 12 minutes remaining, scoring his second try - and cutting the Raiders' lead to just four.

The final stages were tense, but the Raiders produced their best try of the game with two minutes left. Five eighth Mitchell Spencer put up a great kick, which was regathered by Junior Tupou - who offloaded to Jack Williams. It was a hat trick for Williams and a stunning end to a very tough contest.

THIS WEEK: The Raiders meet the Victoria Thunderbolts in Round 3. After two rounds, the Raiders are the only undefeated team and sit in first place on the competition ladder (Thunderbolts 12th). The Melbourne Storm juniors, the Thunderbolts, are coming off a bye, having lost to the Warriors 36-16 in Round 1. These two teams have not previously met in SG Ball. The Raiders have a LWLWW record in their past five matches. The Thunderbolts did not make the finals in 2019, but have a LWWWL record in their past five. We'll tip another win for the Green Machine at home in this one.

In notable team changes, Junior Tupou takes over at fullback, with Brown Kuresa shifting to centre. Connor Williams has been named at halfback in place of Pauliasi Amone, while Joshua Pokoney will start at hooker in place of Zane Thomson. Trey Money has been named at starting prop, with Jayden Clarkson injured, and Ethan Foster takes over at lock.

Round 2 highlights: https://www.nswrl.com.au/news/2020/02/1 ... ball-rd-2/ (2:35 min mark)

The Harold Matthews Canberra Raiders have a bye in Round 3. They posted their first win of the season last weekend, defeating the St George Dragons 20-8 - after leading 6-4 at half time. Siamani Leuluai scored a double, while prop Taulauniuotagoloa Mariota scored a barnstorming try to seal the game. The win sees the Raiders take seventh position on the ladder.

I think they must have swapped the times around. I am sure the fixture I had was Ball at 12 and Gale at 1.30.

Happy with that. 7.30am golf means I will get there easily in time for SG Ball.

Canberra Raiders junior prop Taulauniuotagoloa Mariota announces himself with a barnstorming 45 metre try

Taulauniuotagoloa Mariota. He’s the 115kg Canberra wrecking ball who brushed off seven defenders with ease on the way to a blockbusting solo try on Saturday. Still just 16, the Harold Matthews bookend attends Bonnyrigg High School in Sydney and travels to Canberra twice a week for training and games. Nicknamed ‘Niu’, the New Zealand-born Mount Pritchard junior is incredibly strong and skilful.

Six Goulburn girls a 'massive influence' on Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale success

After two weeks of the Tarsha Gale Cup - and two wins - Goulburn's Krystal Blackwell, Maddie Dodson, Madyson Tooth, Carly Wilkin, Ash Deaton, and Kaylee Roy have have proven a critical component of the Raiders' success.

"I coached the [Monaro] Open Women's side last year and I know that Goulburn's always had a knack for really good sportsmen, let alone the girls," coach John Hawke said.

Junior Reps Round 3 Preview

After two gritty wins to start the season, the Canberra Raiders S.G. Ball Cup side will be looking to maintain their record when they face the Victorian Thunderbolts.

“It’s encouraging sign for me but there’s a lot to work on,” coach Billy Thomson said. “We’re a new side together, we’ve got some young halves in there so there’s a lot to work on. The side have been very courageous over the last couple of weeks and the last couple of wins. They’re playing for each other.”

1 min to go TRY THUNDERBOLTS to Sione Finau, consolation try in the end... but also a bit too easy. No conversion from out wide. The Raiders certainly need to tighten their defence. The Thunderbolts have some very fast players, but the Raiders have room to grow and improve, particularly without the ball in hand.
