'Make Canberra the home of the Kangaroos': PM Scott Morrison and Chief Minister Andrew Barr have capital idea for rugby league

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr says it makes sense for Canberra to become the home of the Australian rugby league team, revealing Prime Minister Scott Morrison initiated unofficial talks about the idea. The idea has not been raised with the NRL and talks are yet to be elevated to a planning stage.

"One thing Prime Minister Morrison has raised with me on a few occasions now is that Canberra become the home of the Kangaroos. That the Australian rugby league team should play its Test matches here.

Perhaps if Mr Barr and Mr Morrison were to build a new Canberra Stadium, the ARLC might vaguely consider it...

Yep, funding for a new stadium thanks. 😊

Quite an odd idea though.

Barr loves to support out of town teams above our own city’s teams.

Israel Folau signs with Les Catalans despite Super League reservations

Controversial ex-Wallaby Israel Folau will return to rugby league with French club Catalans on a one-year deal that has been reluctantly approved by Super League's governing body.

Folau will link with the Dragons with an eye to lining up in his first rugby league game since 2010 as early as next week, ending his nine-month exile over homosexual slurs on social media.

Super League CEO Robert Elstone admits he’s disappointed by Catalans’ decision to sign Israel Folau but said legally there was little he could do to prevent it. And a rival club has promised to meet Folau with an LGBTQ pride event to show their disgust at his homophobic views.

The good thing to come out of this is the near universal condemnation from the rest of the game.

Super League had no choice, but to register him. There would have been a lawsuit and they would have lost it.

Shaun Wane expected to replace Wayne Bennett as England’s rugby league coach

Shaun Wane is set to be named as England’s new rugby league coach. He could have just four games to get them into shape for a tilt at next year’s World Cup on home soil. The ex-Wigan boss is believed to have got the nod over Wayne Bennett, who flopped bossing the returning Great Britain Lions. Bennett wanted a new deal until 2021.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

ARLC decides not to play national anthem at All Stars and to implement Captain's Challenge

The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) held its first meeting for 2020 in Sydney today and has agreed on two key outcomes:

It has accepted advice from the Australian Rugby League Indigenous Council (ARLIC) not to play the national anthem at the All Stars match on the Gold Coast.

It has provisionally endorsed a new "Captain's Challenge" system to be implemented for the 2020 Telstra Premiership.

"Challenges can only be made when the game has come to a halt, such as at a scrum, penalty, handover of possession 20m restart or goal line drop out. Decisions cannot be challenged while the ball is in play.

If an incident occurs but the on-field referee rules play-on, such as when a defending team gains possession through a knock-on, that ruling stands."

I'm not sure if that fixes "six again" or not...

To fix six again you have to be able to challenge the fact that he made a call and changed it. The NRL have never admitted that is outside the rules, so nothing can fix it...

Yeah to implement a challenge system they have to actually be sure to get the decision right and there's plenty of evidence, over plenty of years that they cannot get some pretty basic rules right.

Ask John Bateman. He appears to worship him.

He's a brilliant man manager and his teams are big, tough and uncompromising. Not sure he's tactically adventurous enough for an international coach, but you can be certain he'll pick form players - rather than just those he's heard of - and they'll give 100%.

He was a very tough front rower back in the day.

There is a famous story about Martin Gleeson, the former international. When he was at Wigan he owed some money to some very bad people. They turned up at the training ground to collect and bumped into Wane, who promptly told them what he and the players would do to them if they touched Gleeson. They apparently left, very quickly.
