Canberra Raiders 2010s Team of the Decade: Bench forwards

Image

It has been 10 years since The Greenhouse voted on the Canberra Raiders Team of the Decade - for the 2000s. Back in 2009, Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Josh Miller and Troy Thompson were selected as the bench forwards in the Canberra Raiders Team of the 2000s. Now it is time to vote on the bench forwards for the Team of the 2010s! Remember that for this poll, we need at least two middle forwards for the prop interchange.

We will include the unsuccessful nominees for the starting team in the forwards in this poll... plus some additional bench specialists. Here are the nominees:

Tom Learoyd-Lahrs

Tom Learoyd-Lahrs played 109 games for the Canberra Raiders, after joining the club from the Brisbane Broncos (10 games) in 2006. Born in Tweed Heads, Learoyd-Lahrs came through the system at Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School in Tamworth. He made his debut for Brisbane in Round 2 of 2004 - and he was primarily a second rower in the first six years of his career. He made his first appearance at starting prop in Round 19 of 2010 - and went on to play 33 games in green in that role. He played a total of 62 games for the Raiders in the 2010s (six in the second row, 23 from the bench). He played four Tests for Australia in 2010 off the bench and four Origin matches for the NSW Blues in 2009-10, again off the bench. He also played three games for the Indigenous All Stars (2010-12) and NSW Country (2010-12). He played four finals games (2010, 2012), two at starting prop. He left the Raiders at the end of 2014, having scored eight tries. He played one more NRL game for the Melbourne Storm in 2015.

Dane Tilse

Dane Tilse joined the Canberra Raiders in 2006, after spending 12 months on the sidelines, de-registered by the NRL for his part in an off-field indiscretion while playing with the Newcastle Knights. He is the son of Mick Tilse, a member of the Raiders' very first team in 1982. Dane made his NRL debut for the Knights in Round 15 of 2005 against the Roosters. He played just three first grade games for Newcastle, but made 201 NRL appearances in green. That places him in the top 10 most capped Raiders players. He played 117 games as starting prop, the remainder on the bench. He played 58 games at starting prop from 122 total appearances in the 2010s. Tilse played six finals games for Canberra, four in the 2010s (2010, 2012). He started in both finals matches in 2012. He left early in the 2015 season to join English club Hull Kingston Rovers.

Scott Logan

Scott Logan joined the Canberra Raiders in 2007, playing 74 games in green and 23 in his final season in 2010. He started at prop in seven of those games in the 2010s, the remainder on the bench. He debuted with the Sydney Roosters, playing 78 games for the eastern suburbs club over six seasons. He also played 22 games for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2004-05, 50 games for Hull FC in 2001-03 and 22 games for Wigan in 2006. While with the Raiders he played three games for Scotland in the 2008 World Cup. He played two finals games for Canberra in 2010 off the bench - and one in 2008. He scored a total of seven tries for the Raiders, two in the 2010 season.

Sam Mataora

Sam Mataora played with the Canberra Raiders National Youth Competition team in 2009-10. He made his NRL debut for the Green Machine in Round 8 of 2010 against the New Zealand Warriors. He went on to play 33 games for Canberra, starting one at prop and the remainder on the bench. He played two Tests for the Cook Islands while with the Raiders. He scored two tries in green, both in 2012. He left the Raiders mid-season in 2014 to join the Newcastle Knights, after not playing an NRL match for Canberra that year.

Brett White

Brett White played his junior football with the Cooma Colts, but joined the St George Illawarra Dragons out of school, before heading to Melbourne. He made his NRL debut for the Melbourne Storm in Round 1 of 2005 off the bench, and he played 127 games for the Storm in the space of six seasons. He played in four Grand Finals for Melbourne, winning twice (2007, 2009) - though both of those premierships were subsequently stripped from the Storm for salary cap cheating. Virtually all of his representative appearances came while playing with Melbourne (three Tests for Australia, 2009, eight Origins for the NSW Blues, 2007-10, and five appearances for NSW Country, 2006-10).

White joined the Canberra Raiders in 2011, making 69 appearances over four seasons. He started at prop in 57 of those games, the remainder on the bench. He made no finals appearances while with the Raiders. White represented Ireland in three games of the 2013 World Cup. He scored no points while with the Green Machine.

Paul Vaughan

Paul Vaughan was a Gungahlin Bulls and Canberra Raiders junior, playing with Canberra's National Youth Competition team in 2010-11. He progressed to the Raiders' NSW Cup affiliate Mounties in 2012 and was named Mounties' Players' Player of the Year and in the NSW Cup Team of the Year. He made his NRL debut for the Raiders in the Round 7 clash with the Cowboys in 2013. He was the Raiders Rookie of the Year in 2013. He went on to play 85 games for Canberra, before leaving to join the St George Illawarra Dragons at the end of 2016. He started at prop for the Raiders in 23 games, four at lock, three in the second row, and the remainder from the bench. Vaughan scored 16 tries for Canberra, and made two finals appearances from the bench in 2016. While Vaughan has represented the NSW Blues (2018-19) and Australia (2019) - he did that while playing with the Dragons. While at the Raiders, he represented Italy in the 2013 World Cup (three matches) and NSW Country (three matches, 2014-16).

Shannon Boyd

Goulburn-born Shannon Boyd played his junior football with the Cowra Magpies and represented the Canberra Raiders in the National Youth Competition from 2010-12. He made his NRL debut off the bench for the Raiders in the Round 1 loss to the Cowboys in 2014 - and was named Raiders Rookie of the Year at season's end. He played 67 matches at starting prop for Canberra over five seasons - from a total 111 matches. He also officially played one match in the second row, with the remainder on the bench. He played five Tests for Australia in 2016 and one match for NSW Country in that year. Boyd played three finals matches for the Green Machine (2016), including the 2016 Preliminary Final. He scored a total of nine tries for Canberra, before departing for the Gold Coast Titans for the 2019 season.

Frank-Paul Nu'uausala

Frank-Paul Nu'uausala joined the Raiders in 2015, after playing 153 games for the Sydney Roosters over eight seasons (2007-14). He played a total of 31 games for Canberra, starting 19 at prop, with the remainder on the bench. He scored one try for Canberra. He left mid season in 2016, to join the Wigan Warriors on a three year deal.

Junior Paulo

Junior Paulo joined the Canberra Raiders from the Parramatta Eels mid season in 2016. He made a memorable debut in green against the Manly Sea Eagles in Round 13 of that year. He went on to play 55 games, 42 at starting prop, the remainder on the bench as part of the prop rotation. Paulo was born in New Zealand and came to Australia at a young age, playing his junior football with Ashcroft, Cabramatta and the Eels. He made his NRL debut with the Eels in Round 10 of 2013, playing 53 first grade games for Parramatta before joining the Green Machine. He returned to the Eels at the conclusion of the 2018 season. While with the Raiders he played four Tests for Samoa in the 2017 World Cup. Paulo played three finals games for the Raiders (2016) and won the Meninga Medal in 2017. He scored two tries for a total of eight points with Canberra.

Dunamis Lui

Dunamis Lui was recruited by the Canberra Raiders in 2017, after previous stints with the Brisbane Broncos (2010-13), Manly Sea Eagles (2014-15) and St George Illawarra Dragons (2016). Brisbane-born, he played for the Broncos National Youth Competition team (2008-10), including the 2008 NYC Grand Final defeat at the hands of the Raiders. Lui has now played 58 first grade games for Canberra over three seasons - his 2017 disrupted by an ACL injury. He has 29 games at prop for Canberra, shifting into a starting role in the middle of 2018. He has three finals appearances in green, including the 2019 Grand Final - coming off the bench in the premiership decider. He has scored just one try for Canberra - in 2019 - after a five year drought. He has six Tests for Samoa, two while with the Raiders.

Corey Horsburgh

Corey Horsburgh made his NRL debut for the Raiders in Round 1 of 2019 against the Gold Coast Titans. He went on to become an integral part of the Raiders team that progressed to the Grand Final, playing a total of 22 games, including three finals matches off the bench. He started in one game at prop, one at lock, and the remainder on the bench. He is yet to score a point at NRL level. He finished the season selected in an Australian Under 23s team, which played France. Horsburgh was born in Caboolture, and played with the Redcliffe Dolphins and North Queensland Cowboys before joining the Raiders in 2018.

Joe Picker

Joe Picker was a Canberra Raiders junior who made his NRL debut off the bench for the Green Machine in Round 2 of 2007. He went on to win the Raiders Rookie of the Year award, playing nine games in his first season. He made 110 appearances in green, including 59 where he started in the second row. He also played five games at lock, with the remainder on the bench. He played 64 games for Canberra in the 2010s, 34 starting at second row. Picker made five finals appearances for the Raiders, four in the 2010s (2010 and 2012) with two starting in the second row and two on the bench. His only representative match was for the Prime Minister's XIII in 2008. He scored a total of 20 tries for Canberra.

Joel Thompson

Joel Thompson was a Forbes Magpies junior, representing the Australian Schoolboys (2006) and Junior Kangaroos (2007). He was a member of the Canberra Raiders premiership winning 2008 National Youth Competition team - and was named at second row in the NYC 2008 Team of the Year. He made his NRL debut for the Raiders off the bench in Round 26 of 2008 against the Bulldogs. He played 30 of his 89 games for Canberra in the second row. He played exclusively in the centres in 2010-11 - with 42 games to his name in that position - before moving into the forwards. He also played one game for Canberra on the wing, with the remainder on the bench. Thompson left the Raiders at the end of 2013, joining the St George Illawarra Dragons. He scored 28 tries for Canberra and made two finals appearances (2012) at second row. While at the Raiders, he represented NSW Country (one game, 2011) and the Indigenous All Stars (2010, 2013).

Bronson Harrison

Bronson Harrison joined the Canberra Raiders in 2009 from the Wests Tigers. Born in Auckland, he made his NRL debut for the Tigers in Round 4 of 2004 against the Cowboys - and went on to play 80 matches for the Tigers. He made 83 appearances for Canberra, 59 in the 2010s. He played all but five of those matches at second row. He made two finals appearances for the Green Machine (2010) and scored a total of 11 tries - one in each of his finals matches. He represented New Zealand from Canberra in nine of his 13 Tests. After the 2012 season, he was released from his contract a year early, allowing him to join the St George Illawarra Dragons.

Jarrad Kennedy

Jarrad Kennedy played 49 NRL matches for the Canberra Raiders, starting 24 at second row, three at centre, one at lock and the remainder off the bench. He was a South Coast junior and represented the Raiders in the National Youth Competition in 2008-09 - scoring the golden point try to win the inaugural NYC premiership in 2008. He made his NRL debut for the Raiders in Round 6 2012 against the Warriors. He departed the Raiders at the end of the 2016 season, joining the Manly Sea Eagles. He played just two games for the Sea Eagles in 2017.

Joel Edwards

Joel Edwards was a Newcastle Knights junior and made his debut for Newcastle in Round 15 2010 against the Eels. He played 45 games for the Knights before joining the Canberra Raiders in 2013. He played 28 of his 43 games for the Green Machine in the second row, six at lock and the remainder on the bench. He did not play an NRL game in 2015 - partly due to a foot injury - and was released from the final two years of his contract with Canberra, allowing him to join the Wests Tigers in 2016. He scored three tries with the Raiders.

Sia Soliola

Sia Soliola made his NRL debut for the Roosters in Round 1 of 2005, playing 92 matches before heading to English club St Helens in 2010 - where he played 117 matches. He has also started in 26 games at starting prop, 16 at lock, and the remainder on the bench. He played his first game at prop, but mostly played in the second row until mostly shifting to the middle in 2018. He has made six finals appearances with Canberra, including the 2019 Grand Final - where he started at prop. He has scored 16 tries and one goal for a total 64 points for the Green Machine. He was awarded the Ken Stephen Medal in 2019 for his community work. He represented New Zealand (12 Tests) and Samoa (four Tests) prior to joining Canberra.

Joe Tapine

Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Joe Tapine joined the Newcastle Knights in 2013, playing in their National Youth Competition team in 2013-14. He made his NRL debut for the Knights in Round 9 2014 against the Penrith Panthers. He was named in the 2014 NYC Team of the Year and represented the Junior Kiwis in 2013-14. At the start of 2016, he signed a three year deal with the Raiders, commencing in the 2017 season. He was eventually released early by the Knights, allowing Tapine to make his debut in green in Round 3 2016 - against the Knights. He has now played 80 games for the Raiders, with 25 at second row. He has also played 17 matches at lock, switching his regular position to the scrum base in Round 13 of 2019. He has played his remaining games off the bench. Tapine has made six finals appearances for Canberra (2016, 2019), including the 2019 Grand Final, with three off the bench and three at lock. He played the remaining games from the bench. He played a total of 41 games in the 2010s over three seasons. He debuted with the Canterbury Bulldogs in 2004, but made only one NRL appearance for that club. He scored a total of 13 tries for the Raiders, four in the 2010s. Luke Bateman was born in Toowoombah and played his junior football with the Miles Devils and Souths Logan Magpies. He joined the Raiders in 2013 and played with the National Youth Competition until 2015. He captained the team in 2014-15 and represented the Queensland Under 20s from 2013-15. He made his NRL debut for the Raiders in Round 1 of 2015 off the bench against the Cronulla Sharks. He has played 71 games for the Raiders, starting at lock in 13 matches, at prop in one and in the second row in one. He has come off the bench in his remaining games, including three finals games in 2016. He made no NRL appearances in 2019. He has scored one try, in 2017.

Clay Priest

Clay Priest made his debut for the Raiders in Round 8 of 2016 against the Tigers, elevated from the Raiders' NSW Cup affiliate, Mounties. He went on to play 31 games for the Raiders over two seasons, starting two at lock, one at prop and the remainder on the bench. He was released to the Bulldogs at the end of 2017, due to salary cap pressures. He played one finals game for the Raiders, the 2016 Qualifying Final against the Cronulla Sharks off the bench. For me, Soliola and Tapine are certains... with the final spot for Boyd, Vaughan or Paulo. I went Boyd... but could change my mind on that yet.

I thought Paulo was a pretty big disappointment in his time at the Raiders. A few great games but his lateral movement was a disaster on D. Our middle was so much improved this year without him and Boyd.

Soliola, Vaughan and Tapine for me.

Paulo and Boyd far too inconsistent in their time here.

I had to give Josh Miller a vote. The sort of tough, solid and reliable bench player you need.

Frank the tank for entertainment value
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

I think Tapine is a beneficiary of recency bias. I'm a fan but he doesn't make my list.

Here's a controversial idea: Bronson Harrison in 2010 was better than Tapine has ever been. Admittedly, Harrison declined after that but he was one of the best in the comp at his peak. Played eighty minutes, tackled the house down, broke tackles and lead the comp in offloads.

Now, I suppose it depends on your voting style but if you were the type to compare the peak season of each player then I reckon Harrison has Tapine covered. Harrison might even have him covered anyway.

Here is another idea that might be controversial for some. Paul Vaughan is being massively over-rated in the poll result, compared to Shannon Boyd and Junior Paulo. I like Vaughan and he’s a Canberra junior... but I think he’s being partly judged on what he’s done since he left the Raiders. Vaughan didn’t play any finals games for Canberra, nor did he make representative teams from the Raiders. Boyd did both and Paulo did one. Vaughan started in fewer first grade games than either of those players. I also think Paulo and Boyd are being unfairly assessed on what they did in their final season at Canberra and what they’ve done since.

Shannon Boyd was massively overrated during his time here.

He summed up our big bopper period of 09-18. Great when we had >60% possession, rubbish when we didn't.

It was hardly Vaughan's fault we didn't make the finals, and it wasn't Boyd's efforts that got us there. Vaughan hasn't really played a great deal better at the Dragons, he just got recognised because of the profile of the side.

Boyd and Vaughan played side by side for 3 seasons and I think any fair judge would say Vaughan was streets ahead for 2 of those seasons.

Paulo played three quarters of a really great season so I am excluding him from the discussion.

Vaughan has been better at the dragons. But I still feel overall his time here is better than Boyd's 1 season where he went over him.

Here is another idea..
You're wrong

Vaughan's body of work was far superior to those guys, and the moment he found his way to a high profile club he's been a staple in the SOO team. The reality is Paul Vaughan was one of the best 5 front rowers in the game when he was here. Paulo never reached that level of play, and inspite of the Kangaroo jersey, nor did Shannon Boyd.
Paul Vaughan always has and, likely, always will be better than both those dudes.

Well before Boyd hit first grade I was not a fan. His Kangaroos jersey in 2016 is one of the greatest test selection ****ups in modern history and his subsequent drop in form (to appalling depths, given his reputation), was the cornerstone of our horrific form through 2017 and 2018. Furthermore, one of the great recruiting tragedies in modern history is the Gold Coast's decision to sign him on some ridiculously inflated deal, to simply watch his productivity evaporate before their eyes. Shannon Boyd sucks.

Vaughan's departure may have been necessary for a variety of reasons, but there is no way Shannon Boyd has ever been a better front rower than him.

If anyone has any doubts as to Ricky Stuart's loyalty to his players these days - exhibit A is Shannon Boyd, followed by Blake Austin and Terry Campese.

Junior Paulo is a weapon at his best. Good luck to any coach in getting the best out of him across an entire season though.

Anyway. Vaughan is on my list. Great front rower. Our pack would be immense if he was still here.

100%.

He'll likely jag a spot in this team, but he still hasn't reached his potential. Fingers crossed 2020 is his year. At 25 he is starting to approach his peak years.

Yup I voted for Tapine but there is definitely a recency bias in my vote. I can't remember Scott Logan's form specifically in 2010 but I also never remember him having a drop in performance, at his best he was a level above Tapine in consistent performance.

I'm changing to Logan. Tapine has too much ill-discipline in his game.

Yeah, I reckon he might have been one of those kids who dominated on talent alone and is only now getting that hunger to work hard enough to reach his potential. I really hope he does because his ceiling is high.

Yeah, there is a lot to like about his game and he makes some big plays, but he takes a long time to get into the swing of the season. Not helped by regular injuries and suspensions.

He hasn't reached his potential though, which is one of the reasons I think we can continue to improve with this squad. Guys like Tapine, Cotric, Sutton, Leilua and Guler have a lot more to give compared to what we saw in 2019. Hopefully the coaching staff can help him deliver.

Yep and I reckon the club is committed to extracting the most out of him. Let’s hope he plays twenty games or more and aims really high for himself.

I’d also add CNK to that list even though he was tremendous last year. Having so many players with more to give is a really great sign.

Funnily enough I added CNK and then took him off my list. I would love to see more from him too, but I just ended up naming guys who were below their best last year. CNK was immense, but can hopefully add more strings to his bow in attack. I'd also be extremely happy if he gave us another season like the one he just had. Can't ask for much more! I think he has it in him though. 😊

Who knows what the story is with Leilua...

Anyways, fingers crossed the squad can continue to build on last year rather than go backwards. Hopefully Tapine can squeeze out a full season too. With his footwork, aggression and speed for a middle, he could be great.

If George Williams is legit, and comes here and becomes a good creative half, then we can probably get away with CNK not being a super creative fullback, and then all he really needs is to be able to run the sweep and be a primary ball runner

But we're going to struggle creatively if Williams isnt that, and CNK doesnt develop that.
