Canberra Raiders recruit Curtis Scott aiming to raise funds for bushfire victims

Image

New Canberra Raiders recruit Curtis Scott is aiming to raise $25,000 for bushfire victims, kicking off the campaign with a $5,000 donation of his own. He has set up a GoFundMe campaign and it has already reached donations of $9,000. Nick Cotric, Scott Drinkwater and Brodie Croft are NRL players amongst those making donations.

You can donate here: http://ow.ly/kgmI50xM7SL

Scott announced his campaign on Instagram:

@curtisscott4 on Instagram

Hey everyone let’s all come together and dig deep by donating anything you can to all of those affected by the bush fires.

People/families have lost loved ones and homes and belongings during this tough time, I couldn’t imagine enduring this.

I’m going to start this donation off by donating $5000 to all of those in need.

The target is $25k but’s let’s push past this and do all that we can to help.

Please share this post on all social media so we can raise as much money as possible. Link will be in my bio and also on my story.

Good on him. Hopefully his new team mates and other Raiders fans jump on board.

On a personal note I'm reserving my own contributions to these causes, being in a susceptible area myself.

Wonderful work.

And a good way to ingratiate yourself to a small market community who knows all to well impact these events can have on the community.
(not that i think that was in his mind at all when doing this)

NSW bushfires hit close to home for Canberra Raiders recruit Curtis Scott

His mum was in tears. Describing to him the horror she was seeing. Houses burnt down with just the chimney left standing. In response the Canberra Raiders recruit started a GoFundMe page to raise money for the bushfire victims and kicked in $5000 himself.

"It just hit home a little bit. My mum lives down close to the fires and her place is near the danger zone on the south coast.

#WeAreOne Canberra sporting codes unite to support bushfire relief

The #WeAreOne Call to Action follows Canberra’s Nick Kyrgios’ call for support from his own sport of Tennis, with Canberra’s major sporting codes and teams now joining together to raise money and support for the volunteers, families and communities affected by this tragedy.

The Canberra Raiders have announced their support for "We Are One" through a number of joint initiatives with the NRL, including free entry to their round one match against the Gold Coast Titans on March 13 at GIO Stadium for RFS and SES volunteers. There will also be a collection organised at this match to support the appeal, while a portion of ticket sales will also be donated.

Canberra Raiders to embark on bushfire relief tour

The Canberra Raiders will travel to several bushfire affected regions this week, as part of the club’s bushfire relief program.

The primary objectives of the ‘tour’ are to get a greater understanding of the devastation from the recent fire activity, lift community spirits and directly contribute to local regions that have suffered loss in so many ways.

It all starts on Tuesday, with Sia Soliola and Elliott Whitehead heading to Batlow and Tumbarumba as part of the NRL’s Roads to Regions initiative. The pair will start the day by making a special visit and donation to the Country Women’s Association – Batlow Branch on behalf of the Raiders Sports Clubs in Canberra – Belconnen, Gungahlin and Weston, before visiting schools in both towns. They will then take part in a junior rugby league clinic in Tumbarumba in the afternoon.

On Wednesday the Roads to Regions tour continues, with Luke Bateman and Andre Niko embarking on a three-day tour of other the Riverina towns, with appearances in Harden-Murrumburrah, Cootamundra, Tumut and Adelong.

On Thursday, the NRL squad (minus the nines team who are travelling to Perth) will begin their journey to the South East Coast of NSW, stopping in Braidwood along the way before basing themselves in Batemans Bay. The team will visit schools in Mogo, Broulee and the Bay itself before providing dinner for local RFS Brigades from the Shoalhaven in Bawley Point.

On Friday, the team will conduct a training session at Hanging Rock followed by a community signing session at the ground from 11am. The team will then travel to Moruya in the afternoon to visit schools. From here the trip will continue south to Cobargo and involve a return to Canberra via the Brown Mountain.

During the ‘tour’ the Raiders will be making several donations to local areas, thanks to the generous support of the Raiders Club Group. Details of these donations will be made available during and at the conclusion of the tour.

Raiders CEO Don Furner said the whole week was about showing the Raiders support for their local regions and to bushfire affected areas.

“The recent bushfire events have been catastrophic for so many across so many regions, particularly in a number of regions where the Raiders are heavily active,” Furner said. “This week is our chance to visit these areas and do what we can to help them with their ongoing recovery efforts.”

“This will be part of an ongoing commitment to these regions and the club will be looking to continue their support into the future.”

Canberra Raiders forward Elliott Whitehead has his eyes opened on bushfire trip

Not many people can turn down a plate of cakes and scones baked by members of the Country Women's Association (CWA) – but Elliott Whitehead and Sia Soliola managed to do it.

"To be fair I didn't have a full appreciation of the extent of the damage until I arrived here today," Whitehead said. "It's very upsetting to see what's happened here. But the local community continues to be in such high spirits which I found amazing.

Canberra Raiders visit Cobargo on South Coast tour to offer support for fire-damaged town

The Cobargo Hotel was turned into a sea of green on Friday evening when the Canberra Raiders arrived, where they chatted to locals, posed for photos and donated $10,000 to the Cobargo District Emergency Hay Fund.

"It's good to see all the locals getting around us," second rower Hudson Young said. "They've got our support as Canberra Raiders and we'll do everything we can to support the town," he said.
