Post by greeneyed »

Canberra Raiders 2010s Team of the Decade: Bench utility

Image

It has been 10 years since The Greenhouse voted on the Canberra Raiders Team of the Decade - for the 2000s. Back in 2009, Terry Campese was selected as the bench utility in the Canberra Raiders Team of the 2000s. Now it is time to vote on the bench utility the Team of the 2010s! We are reserving one place for a utility and three places for bench forwards.

We will include the unsuccessful nominees for the starting team at hooker and in the backs in this poll... plus some extra bench specialists. Here are the nominees:

Alan Tongue

Alan Tongue played 220 games for the Canberra Raiders, after making his debut in 2000 and winning the Raiders' Rookie of the Year Award. He first played at hooker in 2002 (three matches) and went on to play 50 first game matches in that role. He was primarily a second rower or lock - often playing off the bench in his early years. However, he mainly played in the No. 9 jersey from mid 2009, playing 24 games at dummy half in the 2010s. Tongue retired at the end of 2011, having scored 31 tries and one field goal, for 125 points. He won the Raiders' Player of the Year in 2006, and the Dally M Lock of the Year and Captain of the Year in 2008. He played one game for NSW Country, at lock, in 2009. He played six finals games for the Raiders over five seasons - and one in 2010, off the bench, in the clash with the Wests Tigers at Canberra Stadium.

Glen Buttriss

Glen Buttriss played 119 games for the Canberra Raiders, including 82 as starting hooker. He also often played off the bench at dummy half. He made his debut for Canberra in Round 6 of 2008, against the Melbourne Storm at Canberra Stadium. He scored seven tries, for a total 28 points. He made finals appearances for the Green Machine, including four as starting hooker in the 2010s - the 2010 finals clashes against the Panthers and the Tigers, and the 2012 finals against the Sharks and Rabbitohs.

Travis Waddell

Travis Waddell made 53 appearances at NRL level for the Canberra Raiders, including 25 as starting hooker and the remainder on the bench. He played for Canberra's National Youth Competition team in 2008 and 2009 - and was part of the inaugural NYC premiership side. He was also named at hooker in the NYC Team of the Year in 2009. He made his first grade debut in Round 3 of 2009, against the Eels. He broke his jaw in 2010, but still played 17 NRL games. He only made five first grade appearances in 2011, spending much of the year with Souths Logan. He played 21 games in his final season with the club, before departing for the Newcastle Knights at the end of 2012. He scored three tries for a total of 12 points for the Green Machine. Waddell played in one finals match for Canberra - off the bench in the 2010 clash with the Panthers at Penrith.

Shaun Berrigan

Shaun Berrigan joined the Canberra Raiders in 2012, playing 36 matches in green over two seasons. He made his debut with the Brisbane Broncos in 1999, winning two premierships before heading to Hull FC in 2008. He returned to the NRL in 2011 with the New Zealand Warriors, before recruited to the team he supported as a child. He was at the end of his career, but was brought to Canberra to add some much needed experience to the squad. He initially played at centre for Canberra (eight games), but the remainder were spent at hooker, half or on the bench. He made two finals appearances as bench utility for Canberra in 2012. He scored three tries, a total of 12 points, for the Raiders.

Kurt Baptiste

Kurt Baptiste joined the Canberra Raiders in 2014, after playing five games for the Brisbane Broncos in 2011-12. The Aspley Devils junior represented in the Australian Schoolboys. He played for the Broncos National Youth Competition team from 2009, and was named in the 2011 NYC Hooker of the Year. He played 56 games over four seasons with the Green Machine, all but four from the bench. He started at hooker in three matches and one at lock. He played three finals games for Canberra in 2016, in the bench utility role. He scored five tries for Canberra, before salary cap pressure forced him out of the club. He joined the Leigh Centurions in 2018, but he played only one game in the English Super League, returning to Australia and playing nine games for the Sydney Roosters in that year. He moved to the North Queensland Cowboys in 2019, playing nine games before suffering an ACL injury while playing for Papua New Guinea. He played five Tests for the Kumuls while at the Raiders.

Siliva Havili

Siliva Havili was recruited to the Canberra Raiders in 2018, as cover for injured hooker Josh Hodgson. He has started in 17 games in the No. 9 jersey for Canberra, and one at lock. The remainder of his 46 games for the Raiders have been off the bench. He has the ability to play both at hooker and as a utility forward. Havili made his debut for the New Zealand Warriors in Round 6 of 2014, playing 14 games over two seasons. He joined the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2016, playing 10 games - but he did not play an NRL game in 2017. His strong performances for Tonga in the 2017 World Cup saw him given an NRL lifeline by the Raiders. He has played five Tests for Tonga while with Canberra and has scored five tries in green.

Blake Austin

Blake Austin joined the Canberra Raiders in 2015 from the Wests Tigers, having made his NRL debut with the Penrith Panthers in Round 25 of 2011 - against the Green Machine. Austin had a break out season with the Raiders in his first year at the club, winning the Dally M Five Eighth of the Year Award. He was instrumental in the Raiders' best season for two decades, which saw the club finish in second, score a record number of points, win 10 games in a row and compete in the Preliminary Final. Austin went on to play 88 games over four for the Raiders, all but five at five eighth. He scored 34 tries and a field goal for the Green Machine. He represented NSW City in 2015. He departed the club at the end of 2018, joining the Warrington Wolves in England for the 2019 season.

Josh McCrone

Josh McCrone played 133 NRL games for the Canberra Raiders, after making his debut in Round 7 of 2009. He played 67 games at halfback and 49 at five eighth. All but nine of his matches were played in the 2010s. He was Terry Campese's halfback partner in the 2010 campaign, but with Campese on the sidelines in 2011, he took over the captain's No. 6 jersey in that season. He spent 60 per cent of the 2012 season at five eighth, with Campese again affected by injury - as well as the first seven rounds of 2013. He played four finals games for Canberra - two in 2010 at halfback, and two in 2012 at five eighth. He joined the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2016. He scored 34 tries for Canberra and one field goal, for a total of 137 points. He made three appearances for NSW Country between 2012-14, one at halfback and two off the bench.

Sam Williams

Sam Williams, a Cooma Colts and Canberra Raiders junior, made his first grade debut for the Green Machine in Round 1 of the 2011 season. He produced a man of the match performance, in the 40-12 victory over the Cronulla Sharks at Canberra Stadium. With Matt Orford spending most of the season injured on the sidelines, he made 18 NRL appearances in his rookie season. Williams has had three separate stints with the Raiders. He played the 2014 season at the St George Illawarra Dragons and Catalan Dragons, before returning to Canberra in 2015. He had another season in the Super League in 2017 with Wakefield Trinity, but re-joined the Raiders in 2018.

Williams has played 90 NRL matches for Canberra, 81 of them at halfback. He has played three finals games for Canberra, two in 2012 and one in 2016. He has scored 15 tries, 25 goals and six field goals, for a total of 116 points. He made one appearance for NSW Country in 2013, on the bench.

Josh Dugan

Josh Dugan made his NRL debut with the Raiders in Round 4 of 2009, against the Cowboys. The Raiders junior was part of the premiership winning 2018 Toyota Cup team, but the mercurial runner unfortunately had a falling out with the club in early 2013, essentially walking out on his contract. He played 70 games for the Raiders, all but three in the No. 1 jersey. He scored 27 tries for Canberra, seven goals and one field goal. He represented NSW Country, NRL All Stars and the New South Wales Blues from the club. He played 12 Tests for Australia after leaving the club.

Anthony Milford

Anthony Milford played 42 first grade games for the Raiders in 2013-14, before the Brisbane-born Raiders junior was poached by the Broncos. He played his first game in the No. 1 jersey in Round 17 of 2013 against the Cowboys, and played 25 games in that position - shifting to five eighth for his final final games with the club. He scored 21 tries for the Green Machine, plus three goals and two field goals.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad joined the Raiders in 2019, and the little known Warriors back was a revelation in his first full season at fullback. He played 26 games in 2019 in the No. 1 jersey, including the Grand Final. He was selected for the New Zealand Kiwis for their end of season Test matches.

Joel Thompson

Joel Thompson made 89 appearances for the Raiders at NRL level, 41 of them at centre. He made his NRL debut in Round 26 of 2008, against the Bulldogs. He played 79 games in the 2010s, 40 at centre, mostly during the 2010-11. He predominantly played in the back row in his final two seasons with the Green Machine, departing for the St George Illawarra Dragons at the end of 2013. He scored 28 tries, for a total . He made two finals appearances for Canberra, in 2012, in the second row. He represented NSW Country and the Indigenous All Stars while with the Raiders.

Blake Ferguson

Blake Ferguson played 60 games for the Canberra Raiders after joining the club from the Cronulla Sharks in 2011. While he is mostly recognised as a winger, he played 27 of his matches in green at centre. He scored a total of 36 tries and 14 goals for Canberra - with 22 of those tries and all 14 goals scored at centre. He was the club's top try scorer in both 2011 and 2013. He represented the Indigenous All Stars, NSW Country and the NSW Blues while at the Raiders. He left the club in controversial circumstances, charged with indecent assault after his Origin debut, and then walking out on his contract at the end of 2013. He played two finals matches for Canberra at centre in 2012.

Reece Robinson

Reece Robinson made 83 first grade appearances for the Canberra Raiders, with 56 of them starting on the wing, and the remainder at fullback. He was a South Sydney Rabbitohs junior, but he made his NRL debut with the Brisbane Broncos in 2008. He was released at the end of that season by Brisbane, and played with the North Sydney Bears in the NSW Cup in 2009. He was picked up by the Raiders in 2010, and he played five seasons with the Green Machine. He subsequently played with the Parramatta Eels and Sydney Roosters, as well as the NSW Waratahs in rugby union. He the Indigenous All Stars in 2013 and played four finals matches on the wing for the Raiders (2010, 2012). He scored 43 tries and three goals, for a total 178 points in green.

Daniel Vidot

Daniel Vidot played 45 NRL games over three seasons with the Canberra Raiders, all on the wing. Brisbane born, Vidot played in the National Youth Competition with Canberra in 2008-2009, playing centre in the 2008 NYC Grand Final victory. He made his NRL debut in the Round 18 clash with the Newcastle Knights in 2009, playing eight games in his rookie season. Vidot was Canberra's highest try scorer in 2010 (16), and he played two finals matches in that season. However, he played a good deal of Queensland Cup with the Souths Logan Magpies in 2011 and he headed to the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2012. While with the Raiders, he scored 27 tries for a total 108 points.

Sandor Earl

Sandor Earl joined the Canberra Raiders from the Penrith Panthers mid season in 2012. He was born in Wellington, New Zealand, but grew up in Sydney's eastern suburbs and debuted with the Sydney Roosters in 2009. He only played three games for the Roosters and was released at the end of 2009. He was signed by the Panthers in 2010 and was their Rookie of the Year in that season. He only played 16 games with the Panthers, however, ruled out for much of 2011 with a shoulder injury. He made 29 appearances in total in green, all on the wing, after debuting for Canberra in Round 17 of 2012 against the Dragons. He announced he would depart the club at the end of 2013, to play rugby union in France - but he became embroiled in the investigations into the use of performance enhancing drugs in Australian sport. He was stood down from the NRL at the end of August 2013, and suspended for four years, after admitting to offences while at the Panthers. He was the only player suspended for a lengthy period, despite widespread doping programs run at other NRL and AFL clubs. Earl scored 17 tries, and a total of 68 points for Canberra - and appeared in two finals matches in 2012.

Edrick Lee

Edrick Lee made 67 first grade appearances for the Canberra Raiders, all but three on the wing - with three at centre. Lee was Brisbane born, and came to the Raiders via the Souths Logan Magpies. He joined Canberra's National Youth Competition team in 2011 - and went on to make his NRL debut in Round 12 of 2012 against the South Sydney Rabbitohs. His 2013 and 2014 seasons were disrupted by injury. He broke his arm in the Round 13 clash with the Broncos in 2013, ruling him out for the rest of the year - while he spent most of 2014 on the sidelines, after he tore ligaments in his foot in the Round 3 match against the Titans. He was a regular member of the 2015 and 2016 teams, but was released at the start of the 2017 season to the Cronulla Sharks. He represented the Queensland Under 20s and Indigenous All Stars (2016) while with the Raiders. He scored 33 tries for 133 points in green - and appeared in three finals matches for Canberra (2016). Unfortunately, he produced two critical knock ons in the 2016 Preliminary Final loss to the Storm - his last game for Canberra.

That's a huge list. Limited my options to those that played the role fairly often. As such I went for Milf. He was a weapon off the bench.

Personally, I don't think any of the outside backs or fullbacks... apart from Anthony Milford, are well suited to a bench role. Has to be a hooker or half IMO... though I can see a role for a strike attacking runner. Still working out how to vote, to be honest. It's not an easy choice.

I ended up including all the backs... as I know people will complain if someone is left out!

I went for Havilli as I think he was the best genuine bench player.

I think Kurt Baptiste is the better bench hooker, in fact he's probably the best of the dummy half options. I can see why some might want Havili... if you actually want a four forwards on the bench.

I'm probably down to Baptiste and Austin actually...

I can only vote for a player who genuinely and regularly came off the bench. So has to be Baptiste for me.

Whilst someone like Milf is a better option. He didn’t consistently play that role for the Raiders.

This is the toughest position to define.

During this era, it was mostly selecting a 2nd hooker, even better if they could play a 2nd position. If that was the case Havili or Tongue would be high on the list, even if Baptists is the best hooker on that list.

That said, I've gone for ultimate utility value, which is Austin. I believe he has played all but prop during his NRL, ESL and now English career. Given he was a very strong case for the five-eighth role too, I think he is the best pick.

Given this team isn't actually going to be playing a game I think you just vote for the best player. Positions don't matter in this type of team.

Cnk for mine. It's between him and Austin really.

What's that got to do with this exercise?
Now would seem an odd time to start worrying about validity of positions

I voted Milford, in line with the dream team mentality of this, he's clearly the best and most talented player on the list.

Austin for me.

I'm not sure how to define the criteria for this one, however I believe his impact in that 2015/2016 and as emphasised by a Dally M 5/8 of the year, should warrant a position somewhere in our strongest 17.

Close call between him and Milford but I think Blake nudges it just.

Baptiste easily IMO. Provided a real danger to the opposition every time he came on and gave us something different. Loads of speed and could put on a real hit for a tiny guy.

Austin probably deserves this spot to be honest but I voted CNK just on his character as the deciding factor.

Personally, I don't think CNK is suited to the bench utility role. He's a good runner with space at the back, but he's not a strong ball player. I'd want someone with more creativity with the ball to inject from the bench. Even if you're picking someone simply as a ball runner, to add spark when the opposition forwards are getting tired, I'd be more inclined to go for Austin or Milford. We have no evidence that he'd perform the role off the bench, with Canberra at least. I'd be genuinely interested to hear why people voting for CNK think he would be suited to the position.

I just want him in my 17 and am going on the pick your best then find spots for them theory. And the way the game is headed, an outside back on the bench will become the norm, imo. Simonsson o the bench probably didn't make sense at first. Until it did.

Combo of one of the best players available and the fact he was consistently one of our best in our strongest season of the decade. It's a commemorative team rather than an NRL roster so balance of the team doesn't matter.

my views have been made in each thread.

This isnt a team of the decade, there is two... frankly ridiculous selections, along with the administrator calling polls when it suits his team!

I'm sorry, but that is ridiculous. All polls were open for two weeks and called after two weeks. There was plenty of time for voting.

I agree with your sentiments RE the selected team. Not sure how that's GEs fault though. The system and was generally fair (I did like nickmans 30 game suggestion to avoid 1 season wonders), but you can't lead horse to water as they say

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me why any of the starting team isn't deserved in their positions... noting that Jack Wighton and Josh Papalii both can't play in three different positions all at once. That seems to be the only contentious issue.

I mean, some of you want Josh Papalii at second row... sure... but he was also one of the top two props of the decade no doubt.

Some of you want Jack Wighton at five eighth, or centre, or wing... but it is pretty difficult to say he didn't deserve selection at fullback.

My comments are completely fair and reasonable and they don't deserve "memes" of a sort as a response.

And for those who are complaining... it is fair and reasonable for you to put up your own starting 13, so we can hold that up to scrutiny.

Wighton was a pretty poor fullback. One of the worst in the NRL for the vast majority of his time there.

I think I am in a bizarro world where Kurt Baptiste is being talked into the top 17 players of the decade. It's so crazy I'm jumping on board.

1. Cnk
2. Cotric
3. Croker
4. Leilua
5. Rapana
6. Wighton
7. Sezer
8. Papa
9. Hodgson
10. Shillington
11. Whitehead
12. Bateman (Papa is in my top 2. Bateman is the better option to slide in to the team)
13. Soliola

14. Campo
15. Vaughan
16. Fensom
17. Tapine

14 is a tough one. I'm going with 2010 Campo very narrowly over Austin. Austin's defence and strange exit from the club being the deciding factor. It is also hard as Campo, through no fault of his own, was woeful other than 2010. Even his 2010 was wildly inconsistent, but he stood up in the finals vs 2nd ranked Penrith and is the best of an average bunch.

Bench utillity and especially hooker is a genuine specialised position and one we used on and off for the whole decade. Picking a player who basically never played there doesn't make sense to me.

It's the same reason the bench for mine has to have at least 2 middles on it.

A good starting team, I can see they’re very valid choices, not that far away from the one voted.

Interesting Alan Tongue is leading at present... I can understand that if you’re picking a forward, but not as a dummy half.

I loved Tonguey however his form in 2011 when he was used as a Number 9 was pretty mediocre.

The only way he comes into the team of the decade should be based off his form as a back row forward in 2010/11 and IIRC he played very little as one?

I think we are better off just picking the best 4 players who missed starting spots on our bench for the Team of the Decade. Just because bench hooker is a position in the NRL doesn't mean it has to be so in a commemorative team. As an example, Baptiste was probably the best bench hooker we had in this period but he doesn't come close to being one of the best 17 Canberra Raiders from 2010-2019.
