How Canberra Raiders forward John Bateman became the water boy for junior club at charity match
WEST BOWLING played a New Year's friendly derby with Bradford Dudley Hill, and raised over £700 on the day for Kirkwood Hospice, which provides specialist palliative care for the terminally ill in Kirklees.
Canberra Raiders star John Bateman, a Dudley Hill junior made a welcome appearance at the game on Saturday. He did his bit too, showing he had not forgotten his roots by acting as makeshift water carrier for his old side.

How Canberra Raiders forward John Bateman gave his losing Grand Final medal to his grandma
John Bateman has admitted he lets his grandma keep all of his losers medals - but says he is determined to earn winners silverware with Canberra Raiders next year.
“No-one remembers you coming second. Finishing first is what I’m all about. Whenever I’ve lost in Grand Finals, I’ve always watched my opponents celebrating, so it sticks with me. My grandma takes all my losers medals off my hands, including the Canberra one. When I came home two months ago, that was the first time I’d looked at it. It’s good out there in Canberra, and it’s where I want to be rugby wise.
