Canberra Raiders reportedly interested in signing Matt Frawley

Matt Frawley is closing in on an NRL return after leaving Huddersfield Giants. League Express understands the halfback is in talks with NRL Grand Finalists Canberra Raiders after returning down under... with talks continuing over the weekend.

O... Ok.
Feels a little redundant with Sam Williams on the books. I assume this would be a mounties contract?

Given there are 29 on the books, you’d think so.

Who is better? Williams or Frawley?
Frawley was actually ok for Dogs a couple of yrs ago. No clue how he went in ESL.
We already know Williams is ok.

So, bet on Frawley's youth?

It'd be good to have 2 established halves at Mounties

They struggled hard when Williams was out

That would be a confusing signing. With Sam and Hingano already on the books, and Donny saying our recruitment is done. Do we really need more halves depth?
I guess it'd only be min wage. We're not really lacking for depth anywhere really.

I suppose the Q is, is he better than what we have?
Right now, I think he is better than Hingano.
Sammy, probably not, BUT, is 4-5yrs his junior.

He's not better than Williams. Well, I wouldn't pick him over Williams. If your criteria is simply who is the better defender for 1 game he might get picked. But if we're looking at someone to come in to play a proper role it'd be Williams every day.

Back in those days the article would include a quote from Matt Elliott bemoaning how hard it is to recruit quality players to Canberra and then some Bull about cattle.

Yep. I guess the club learned a valuable lesson about hiring a coach who actually believed in the place from that era. That's not the only ingredient needed, clearly, but I do remember that idiot paying overs for the likes of Tyran Smith as the only "big name" players he could attract.

At least he was excellent for us in the 2 years he was here

Yeah, it's not like Stuart is signing superstars to Canberra either. He is taking punts on Pommies, young kids like Tapine, Horsburgh, Simonsson etc and diamonds in the rough like Leilua, Rapana, CNK, Austin, Taylor and Oldfield - but at no stage has he talked about how hard it is to get quality players here.

I'm sure everyone remembers the early days when the likes of Tedesco backflipped, Mansour considered us and stayed with Penrith and Proctor changed his mind - but even then, Stuart didn't blame the City itself. The club just changed tac with its recruiting strategy.

It has been a really exciting thing to watch.

Ive got a couple of dogs fans in my team. I was trying to gauge whether he could tackle. Incredibly they couldnt remember him which probably says plenty. If he can tackle i reckon there is a good chance we could see him in first grade ahead of s willi. l.. id have preferred a good junior, but there isnt a whole lot to dislike about this

Frawley is a good step below NRL level. I’m surprised people thought he was good at the Dogs.
