2019 in review - Emre Guler

Image

This is the fifteenth instalment of 2019 in review. As usual, now the Raiders' season is over - the best for 25 years - we are reviewing all 26 players who pulled on a green jersey in first grade this year. So far, we've looked at Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Nick Cotric, Jarrod Croker, Joey Leilua, Jordan Rapana, Jack Wighton, Aidan Sezer, Josh Papalii, Josh Hodgson, Sia Soliola, John Bateman, Elliott Whitehead, Joe Tapine and Bailey Simonsson.

Emre Guler made his NRL debut, aged 20, towards the end of 2018, playing the final three matches of the season - all off the bench. The Junior Kangaroos and Blues representative looked right at home in first grade. And many expected he'd be a regular member of the 2019 team. It didn't quite turn out that way - but it still ended in a Grand Final appearance.

Guler played just 11 NRL games in the season just passed, all off the bench. He played just one game in firsts, in the first half of the season - the Round 7 loss to the Sea Eagles. He returned to first grade in the Round 13 win over the Wests Tigers, and missed just five games in the second half of the year. He played the final four matches of the season, including the Grand Final, forcing his way back into the team because of his impact off the bench. He played 14 matches for Mounties this year in NSW Cup.

Guler's statistics in first grade this season reflect the fact that was used solely as an interchange player and played low minutes. His numbers when starting in NSW Cup were a bit variable, but at times were very impressive indeed. In his NRL matches, he averaged 53 running metres from around six runs and 13 tackles per match. His running metres per carry (9.2) were pretty handy - as good as Josh Papalii. His tackle efficiency rate (89 per cent) was not too bad, similar to the rates posted by Hudson Young and Elliott Whitehead - but not up with the benchmark forward at the club, Josh Papalii (94 per cent). He posted just one try cause, and very few errors and penalties.

I rated him an average of 5.3/10 for his 11 games, with his best rating (7) coming in the Round 25 loss to the Warriors. In that match he made 142 running metres, 70 post contact metres, one tackle break and 19 tackles. Guler put in a very good 26 minutes in the Grand Final as well. He didn't receive any points in Canberra Raiders Fans' Choice Player of the Year voting.

Guler finished the season with selection in the Under 23s Kangaroos team, that played France in Wollongong - which says a lot about the potential of a very young prop forward. Hopefully he can start 2020 in the same sort of form in which he finished 2019.

Loved the aggression he brought in the GF. Only going to get better. More of that early next year please.

He was great in the GF.

He had to fight Horsbugh/Young for a spot, and lost out. When recalled he was really good. Got better with each game.

A very good player competing for a regular fg spot.

Glad he's ours.
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

4/10 but an 8/10 in the context of the opportunities he got. He looks primed for a breakout next year.

Agreed.

I reckon we need this kind of double rating for all benchies. Matt’s match-ups could use it.

Yeah I was impressed and a tiny bit surprised how he just came in at the business end of the season and just did the business vs the best packs in the game repeatedly. That kind of back up, consistent performance isn't common in young talented players. fair enough he was pretty fresh after not a lot of first grade but it says good things about his temperament.

If Sia starts next year then Hors, Guler, Young + #14 is the bench for mine. And Hors will be sniffing around Tapine's starting spot if he can't put consistent footy together.

Yeah, I agree with the sentiments of those impressed with how he performed towards the end of the season.

He's pretty mobile for a big unit and had some impact with his carries, but was also solid in defence. In the past I was a bit worried about us losing momentum when he came on, but not so much now. Both he and the Red Rage took it up to the opposition in the middle.

I'm looking forward to seeing how he builds on that next season, particularly with Soliola near the end of his career.

4.5/10, reflecting a great contribution in relatively low minutes across the season.

Guler played with more aggression (and within the rules) as the season wore on. He looked very good in the finals matches. Really looking forward to see what another off season can do for him. He'll be 22 in January, I'm hoping for bigger minutes if chosen as either a bench prop or starter.

As for Rickman/Nickman, 'ol Blue eyes has had more hits than Sinatra and I'm sure he sings 'My Way' before each post. It was great to finally meet him at the Souths semi-final in Canberra. Smile as wide as the Nullabor after the Raiders result. If you could bottle that enthusiasm you'd make a Trillion.

Let’s be honest, Nickman is Sam Williams. He’s a great clubman, bleeds for the club and can step in to fill in for injury - but he’s no first 17 player.

Well, I guess he does have perfect 30m spiral passes in both direction whereas my left to right pass is dodgy at best, but still... you still need a guy like me taking hit-up after hit-up when the forum gets slow.
